    The Nimble is amazing. I run flexible materials on my PLA profile. Retraction and all. Brian and Lykle are also super nice guys and they take the time to really talk and listen to their customers.

    This is definitely eye catching. On a tablet right now and the Nimble site is not wanting to cooperate. Will try again once I'm using my laptop.
    I think, other than 3D printing jumping to the rescue, I really enjoyed the 3D printing family and dogs in the background. Gave it a lived in feel. I mean, the man's glass wasn't even on a coaster!

      I wouldn't call in an innovation when there was already a product on the market doing the exact same thing years before the Nimble was launched. Google Flex3drive.

    Ive had the double nimble for a Chimera on my CR10 5S for about a year now. Ive ran probably around 30 spools of filament through it. ABS, PLA, flex, elastic, nylon, ASA, PC etc. I have never had any issue with it. works perfect. I have a 1600 watt keenovo heated bed with an enclosure and it get hot in there and the nimbles hold up fine in the heat.

    I just ordered TH3d Tough Extruder, but this might be on the buy list before it arrives.
    I love the idea of printing flexibles at normal speed, I fell in love with the Pneumatique by Treed in the Maker Box a couple months ago and want to use it more but the print time is a major detractor.
    I like the 'remote-direct drive' title, it fits and works.

      @Nic Franco My first attempt was with a .4 Chinese brass nozzle and all Vanilla Ender 3 (save for PTFE tube), at 20mm/ sec I got _very_ good results (used the FatBottum TPU preset in Cura 4), absolutely satisfactory. I tried some pieces with a .8 nozzle that actually turned out worse by my opinion.
      The stuff is STRONG! I haven't tried every material or brand, but for all around toughness, this seems to be the toughest material I've personally handled (in normal conditions).

    That is awesome although I would have loved to see that on a printer such as a delta or similar. That being said this concept is a game changer for 3D printing especially if you want a light head.

    Fascinating! I wonder what the down-sides are to this extruder.. Like is there any extrusion-rate accuracy loss with that flexible drive-shaft? Like if it's doing lots of retraction moves? Is there any give when 1 side of that drive-shaft turns, vs the other side? Or is it real solid/instant? Mybe the term is latency? Is there any latency or tolerance between the movement from 1 end to the other?

    Great job both of you, best demo of on-the-fly 3D printing creating useable parts. I've just bought a CTC i3 clone for $99 Inc Honey App $5 off, this supercheap printer *flies along* & is producing quality parts at 0.1 LH/ 0.4 nozzle. 1 key to this surprising result seems to be the Bowden tube-free extruder (I get strong HB adhesion painter tape on glass) so I'm looking forward to seeing if my

    this is a very amazing idea that Delta and corexy printers could benefit a TON from!
    but to benefit from it you need a 32 bit printer or a 8 bit one running klipper, because the regular 8bit one can't manage the speeds you need to print fast
    you should try it with that and crank the speed to 200mm/s at 2k acceleration (with a good hotend)

    During the explanation of how the Zesty worked I nearly expected to hear, "It goes roundy roundy timey whimey" for a moment.
    Reminds me of the flexible shaft extension accessory for a Dremel, which makes me wonder, as that needs to be hung down in a relatively straight line when first turned on to prevent slippage and damage. Is a similar precaution needed on the Zesty?

    Oh boy! That raises a lot of questions related to physics: When you transfer the rotational movement from the external motor via that metal cable inside that tube, won't the metal inside that cable be slightly twisted in each direction? Kind of like lagging. (Imagine a steel wire, and put two handles at each end, now you can "twist" the wire quite a bit), I can imagine the same happening here.

    As a recent buyer of a massive delta printer, I am, to say the least, intrigued. I'd been wondering how much modding I would have to incorporate to use some kind of feed system like a mig wire feeder where I have a body of experience to get a remote feeder in place so only the heat block would be swinging away on the head.

    At 30:1, how long does the drive 'cable' cover/tube last? I see lots of wear in the future. That's a LOT of twisty twisty. (But I'm still sold and plan on buying)

      You should check out this instead. Eliminates the flex cable and uses a solid drive shaft. I think a better idea, especially on retractions.

    So it's like a flexshaft tool that powers the extruder so they can take the motor off of the moving head. That's a good idea. I wonder how much slop the flex shaft introduces, which I would think would mess with retraction a bit.

    Just asking on this video as it's the lastest at the time but I had a question, what colour filament do you think would be the best for prototyping parts? Currently I have some black and green (my dad got the green I think out of novelty I'm not sure) but with the black it's harder to see the finer detail compared to the green, is there a different colour you would suggest (I've only tried pla as well)

    I love the idea and implementation. My only query would be, how much backlash/slop is there in the flexible drive? In my experience there is always some give when changing rotational direction (for retraction), is your flex drive made to reduce this?

      The nimble has a 30:1 gear reduction, so any backlash is reduced by that factor. Brian uses less than 1 mm retraction when printing.

    I watched thus type of extruder few days ago. I think this idea is very cool.
    But, I have question about this method. In this method, torque maintained constantly when the extruder motor will be revolution with constant speed?
    I think small difference will be exist, when the flexible rod turning each cycle. I think strain will be different by the function of theta.
    And In this method, force is transfer via to flexible rod.
    It will have a time constant( like a thermometer time constant).
    For instance, driver motor act when t=0 and actually transfer to the extruder at t>0. it will be neglisibly small??

    I was really excited to see this when Tom visited the booth. One of the biggest problems I have with my printer is that it's so big my bowden system is about 800mm long, which makes retraction settings a bit of a nightmare and since it's a corexy system I really don't want the weight of a direct drive system.
    I suppose my biggest question is if there will be different shaft lengths and stiffness available? What I would probably do is: mount it so the motor is up above the printer so there would be very minimal flex in the drive shaft unlike when it's mounted on a Cartesian system like that Ender 3. Edit: I see there are different lengths in 75cm, 95cm, and 120cm on the site. Why is the 75cm the same price as the 95cm?
    I hope you guys can get a deal with Matterhackers or other options to be an over seas distributor to help with shipping times and costs.
    Now if only I could afford it when it is in stock...

    It appears that you can change out filament to a different color very quickly. How would this one compare to your normal extruder for purging. Currently having to have a purge block. Can this be eliminated.. that would be awesome or even timed in the g-code. Thanks

    you can honestly do flexibles easily with bowden tbh. the reason I like direct drive is accuracy and just less retraction etc.

    Okay so can I combine this with some odrives and servo motors on say a core xy and do something like 3000mm/min?
    Edit: just saw the watercooler so why not do this in a heated enclosure with a e3d volcano? Maybe on a machine big enough to print body molds for cars?

    Interesting! Wonder what the effective "backlash" of the cable drive is, and how well the slicers deal with that. I imagine cura, used to the Bowden systems, would probably handle this fairly well with tweaking.

      The drive on the head has something like a 40:1 gearing on it, so the backlash from the cable is almost nothing.

      @@Hotcubcar ah, didn't think of that, rather clever way to dodge the problem. Interesting, though - presumably that means the stepper motor is really ripping along then since, e.g. my rep2x has no gearing on its direct drive, this Nimble would have to turn 40x faster. Wonder how that is for sound, etc. It's obviously nice for torque, which is super cool.
      Now part of me wants to upgrade at least one head of the rep2x with one of these, reduce the inertia a bit - two nema17s whipping around is a lot of mass.

      @@rpavlik1 Yeah, it produces a lot of torque. Some customers have had a spool get caught, and lift the printer into the air. He tried to show it here, but it didn't get explained very well.
      The stepper does need some speed, not sure about the noise, but it does eliminate the need for microstepping.

    I have one of these connected to my Duet/Smart Effector Delta, and I have to tell you my experience differs from the claims of this video. I can print flexibles if I go very slow (no more than 20mm/s better at 10mm/s), and use NO retraction, but I don't find it to be much better than the bowden setup. The breech is nice, but it can be a bit fiddley when there are connectors in the way (you could kind of see that in the video). I use magnetic balls to suspend my effector, and a lot of this extruder is metal, so pretty much every time I change filament, the breech arm comes off and stick to one of the magnetic balls, and when printing, the drive cable slaps and sticks to the magnets on the pillar when it is in range, and pulls away kind of vibratively when it pulls away far enough. I'm still on the fence as if this is a worthwhile upgrade.

    Hey Brian, if you are still reading the comments, just curious. What is the backlash like with the drive system? Is it something you would have to account for in the retraction settings? This is a very cool idea! I have a flexible drill extender I've used, but I noticed that it has a lot of backlash as the whole tube tries to move when it starts/stops. I am designing a mostly 3D printed printer, and have been looking for a lightweight head to put on it, yours definitely fits the bill.

      Agree, exactly my thought. Especially since the cable is flexible enough to bend laterally, it must be flexible in rotation as well.

    3DPN,,, Would you say that this is a must for replacing the Boden system on say a CR10S Pro to give it a better more consistent print? Also, are you running this on any of your printers now?

      I don't think it's a must, but it's a neat addition. For the CR10s Pro, if you're looking to change and upgrade, look at the Bondtech add on for it. I don't have the Nimble on anything yet.

      @@3DPrintingNerd Wow ok I looked at it it would be a great thing to try on one of my printers. I have ordered several to get back started up again. I think it is better because of the 2 feed wheels in place of one it will make stripping out the filament less possible ans induce more force onto the hot-ends keeping a constant flow rate. Great stuff here. Thank you

    This uses the same flexible drive shaft technology as the Flex3Drive extruder (that's been around for years now).

    Hey Joel, me and some fellow students made a fdm 3d printer capable of printing solder tin! It can also 3d print all kinds of filament we already know. It was a assignment for college, and we smashed it! We only had to build the head, but we built a entire printer!     There's going to be some serious flex and slop in that drive cable. Getting the tuning right is gotta be interesting.

      3D Printing Nerd I watched it again and saw that he has a 30-1 gear reduction which should help that. I just know from the mechanic world how those types of cables can tend to twist when put under load.

    So the motor is on the frame connected to a flexible shaft and it in the hotend head is the extruder. This is better than the bowden system but remains behind direct driven. Probably you will have backlash problems too unless the flexible shaft has a good couple to the motor and the extruder and has a very good quality, which it's expensive. The big advantage of this system is you can print flexible materials without a direct driven extruder.

    Curious... In terms of print speed, is it really that big a deal to put a drive motor on the hotend? I mean, the Makerbot 2X I use at work has two motors and two hotends. And it still prints pretty good quality at 90 mm/s. That's ABS too!

      Depends on the design of the printer. Printers designed with the motor at the extruder are sturdier then one without it.

    This is really igenious. This could really help printers like the cr-10 and if working well could really help artifacting in prints as the head is so much lighter. Im impressed. Sounds like my new upgrade

    Does this offer improved retraction performance versus bowden or is it really just for flexibles?

      I can't speak directly in relation to the product because I don't have one but yes it would. You wouldn't have the binding that can be caused with bowden setups. Of course that is all relative to the tube used. If you use the standard PTFE tubing then binding can be a serious issue but with something like the Capricorn it may be less of an issue.

      I had 8mm retracts on bowden before the Nimble, down to 1mm retracts now, much the same as any direct drive setup where the stepper is right above the hotend.
