Even though the trip was cut short I think you successfully demonstrated the capability of the jeep even with the limitation of God awful tires. You successfully tackled obstacles the majority of jeeps built out or otherwise would never attempt. Didn’t have an easy time doing it, but to that point it did it.

'need' is relative, I think. Probably good to have all that stuff on kelly flats. That said, you could do nearly as well with BLD, cooper discoverers at 20psi, and a couple of 18MM wrenches to 'manually' disconnect the sway bar.
True, but you also made my point. The Coopers and manually disconnected sway bars are off road traction tire and disconnecting sway bar. 😃 Yes the Wrangler BLD is pretty good but lockers would make the vehicle’s movement smooth and much safer. They will do really well just with a good AT tire. I think Tommy’s mistake was the tire. His idea of stock “cheap” Jeep being very capable is still valid.
They definitely needed lockers lol. The brake management kept making the jeep slide and jerk and they only made it because of the Toyotas and spotters getting them unstuck over and over.

If you gave that thing some good all terrain, larger diameter tires, a 2" lift, and manually disconnected the sway bars - it would go a lot of places.
it's so interesting watching what matt's off road recovery does, with their custom, purpose built vehicles and then what this channel does, with their much more stock vehicles, and less experienced off roaders. Makes me realize as a noob myself, with very stock vehicles, what's realistic to cope with compared to those with a lifetime of experience, trail repair skills, and custom built rigs.
Don't use MORR as a benchmark of driving and recovery skill. They are ok, but make mistakes as often as they get it right. Of the youtube recovery channels the only one I truly respect is Rory at Trailmater. That man has legitimate skills and shows it regularly. As an example, when was the last time you saw him use a kinetic strap in a static recovery? Can't remember him doing that. MORR? Yeah, every time.
Please don’t have that “spotter” in the red shirt on the channel ever again. He stopped Tommy who was on a good line around 6:50 and made him move left. He then repeatedly stopped Tommy as he was making progress and eventually Tommy drops in on the right side because the “spotter” took him left and caused him to stop and start. The guy talks like he’s sort of expert but is absolutely not.
Proper training gains confidence and skill. I've been watching for a while. Most if not all the offroad content on this channel is mild. The first time I see some fun trails and Roman shuts it down. Safety is always first, but just because you're scared doesn't make it unsafe. If that's the case, you might as well stop offroading because anything can happen.
I think you accomplished what you set out to do....show the limitations of a stock Jeep on street tires. You took it farther than most people would. Good call on bagging this trip and come back with better tires and a 2" lift next time.
You absolutely made the right call there Roman! As someone who's rolled a Jeep and a Toyota I can tell you it happens so fast you're not even gonna know what happened. The tires were bad for sure but I think that jerky brake lock diff bs is what would've ruined your day. Gotta be smooth!
There’s no reason for anyone to roast you in the comments. Huge credit where credits due for showing the limitations of stock OEM street tires and how important the proper tire can be. After you get tires and some sway bar disconnects, I’d love to see you go back and show the difference. Can’t wait to see more on this series!! Also, being a father myself, I totally understand Roman’s freak out…lol Keep it up guys! Great video.
I want to add this comment ; From watching this video and having watched T F L for a few years Roman Mica is Man who cares about people, enjoys life, is level headed and enjoys what he does and is disciplined and in this day of dysfunctional families it is nice to see a man who has passion for what he does and shows that he cares about his son. Tommy is a rarity and and calm and smart and like his Dad Roman , passionate and enthusiastic about what he does. It’s great Tommy and Roman can work together. The whole T F L group is AWESOME!
@@lanceislateagain yes, it doesn’t make sense. Even though those are soft off-roaders. Bronco sport as well as Subarus use all terrain. Yet 4 runner and wrangler use all season
When he told Tommy to back up and go driver on that first obstacle, how many people were yelling at the screen that he was going to slide off that passenger side rock?
@@RobRoyRoadie Hi, James here from the video (guy in the red shirt). The camera angle isn't doing any favors here to show you how to line up the truck. The issue on this obstacle was that there was a deep notch directly under the center line of the truck between that high rock on the passenger side and that later rock on the driver side. Too far toward that passenger side and you won't come up the middle of the rock on the driver side. Back up to 5:27 and you can see the FJ come right up the same line I'm trying to put Tommy on. The Jeep's main issue here was tire traction, the passenger side line would be perfect and it would slip off toward the driver side. The FJ has a front locker -- not sure if it was on -- which probably helped to keep it from slipping, but the Jeep's tires just weren't holding it on a steady line coming up the obstacle. Perhaps a front locker with these same tires would have kept it more stable than the BLD (brake lock differential) applying ABS, but I suspect that it wouldn't have made enough of a difference. I fully expect we'll head back up there once they put a better set of tires on this thing. My 4Runner did everything that day unlocked / ATRAC on, which is the same as Jeep's BLD. I've seen a lot of Jeeps in Colorado do amazing things without a lift / giant tires -- Charles Wells who makes the FunTreks guidebooks wheels a TJ on BFG AT 32's -- but you gotta have more tire than this one does.
As a dad, this is one of my favorite videos you guys have done. Seeing Roman standing on that passenger side while Tommy was sliding right… no way he would’ve stopped that thing from going. But that was his boy in that Jeep. I get it.
Being the fud that I am, I was glad to see Roman recognize the cheap jeep had reached its limits. I’d much rather see disappointment than catastrophe! On to some simple mods and better capability!
I know camera angles don't do obstacles on a trail any real justice, so this is just a question, not a judgement.... Am I the only one who feels like the spotters and drivers might have been over their heads, more than the rig was? I kept asking myself... why did they take that line? Why is the Jeep in the hole again? Why are they letting it get sideways when backing down the hill? Yes, real tires and some manual swaybar disconnects would really help this situation, but so would experienced spotters?
I truly don't understand why Jeep doesn't offer all terrains as standard on all Wrangler trims. That is the one vehicle that should never have street tires.
Jeep is flinging crap at the wall when it comes to tires right now cheap jeep crap tires expensive jeep so so all terrains buy a Willy get good mud terrains
Actually it was a good idea to do this video, because there are people that will get a jeep like that and go trail riding by themselves just because it is a "jeep" I am glad yall did the video
What this shows is exactly where not to take a stock Jeep. So as an example of this, this is great. Because some individuals will buy a Jeep like this with unrealistic expectations of where they can go and thus get in trouble on the trails as a consequence. This helps show some of these limitations, so I am glad you demonstrated these limitations so well.
LOVE the Roman/Tommy dynamic! As a parent I understand where Roman’s coming from; as a crazy parent, I get where Tommy’s coming from. I applaud them for even trying in that Heep. Great video!
This video is a perfect opportunity for a tire company to show off the difference in their product can make. I would run the exact same trail again but with good tires and no other changes.
I totally understand how Roman feels. I could enjoy watching anyone tackle a wildly difficult trail in a vehicle outfitted nowhere near the capability required and it'd be exciting. Way, way different when it's your only son. Great video guys!
This is perfect. Just like the Willy's. You don't always have to crawl and flex to get there. You sometimes have to get into it. That was four wheeling back in the day. Just give it hell to get as far as you can.
Up until 2 years ago, I was Tommy. Fast forward to today, I understand Roman and look at my son. Completely understand both view points but I am 100% with Roman on this.
This is great! I have notifications on and will be waiting for the next one. Also totally agree with Roman, yes you want to have fun, you want to see what the vehicle can do, but you absolutely want to be safe. Good job all around with driving technique & filming. Looking forward to seeing what better tires will do for this Jeep.
I 100% get both sides here. I’m probably about 100x more willing to put myself at risk than my wife or daughter. I get Tommy. I love testing my own limits. I get Roman. I wouldn’t let my family anywhere near that jeep on that trail. Really, really great video here guys. Respect.
I love the idea of bouncing around on a bone stock Wrangler, which is exactly how I would buy it! But I would never take it on a trail that difficult, lol.
I had a JL sport with 35x10.50x17 and rubi shocks along with sway bar disconnects, also picked up some rock sliders off a rubi… I put over 50,000 miles on it with in a year and made memories I’ll never forget!!
Roman was right. You have to know when to call it quits before somebody gets hurt or killed. The video, like pictures, does not show how steep the hill was or how much of the tilt of the Jeep had. I have read from these comments that the person who was spotting was telling Tommy bad spotting advice. Unless you and I were there, we shouldn't pass judgement because we were not there and there were probably things he did see and that we cannot from this video. I think it was great of you guys to show that Jeeps and other off road vehicles are capable of climbing hills but more importantly, is that everyone returns home safely and without damaging your vehicle. Know your limits and live to try again some other day :D
I get both Roman and Tommy’s thoughts and opinions about it. Yeah as a son I’d want to push on a little more. But my Dad would be the level head and say stop before you break something. And I’d get his point. You guys have an awesome father/son relationship from what we can see. Keep up the great work together guys.
Love this video! Thanks for keeping in the convo about stopping the climb. It's a good reminder to stay within the limits of your vehicle. No offense to Tommy, he's a pro. But I would have made the same decision.
Just put some Thunderer Rangers on my Xterra and have to say these tires are amazing, great off-road traction and super quiet on the road (very close looking to the KO2's) And that is a fact jack tires can make or break a fun day !!! Thanks for sharing !!!!!!
Having a Gladiator Sport, I was able to get up just about anything CO through at me without issues... However, while I had open diffs, I made sure to get a 3.5" Lift, Sway bar disconnects, and BFG KO2 - 37's, to make sure I consistently had good contact with the ground and the clearance to not worry about obstacles. The few times I picked up a wheel I had the traction to keep me planted where I wanted to be. Tires, Articulation, Clearance. In that order with a sport.
good build, i did the same but 2.5 and 35s, and really, it just ended up being too big of a truck for my tastes off-road and I'm back to a 2 door sport again. One thing I would recommend to people that has been amazing are Eaton Truetrak LSDs front and rear. Its like having an automatic locker that only works when you want it, and I only get a tiny amount of binding on pavement when turning full left or right.
Yeah, Roman was right. As a father I completely understood him when he was talking about his only son. I actually enjoyed seeing a failure. Sometimes you have to make the right decision. Otherwise you end up on Matt's off-road recovery.
I have this exact build out but in a 4dr. I’ve done some things to make my life easier but fellas… the difference a disconnected sway bar makes is incredible. Yes you have to get down in the dirt to do it on a sport but this would have been a much different video. Just my two cents, don’t hate me please. Also love the content you and your dad do. It makes my heart happy.

Tommy is not exactly a noob though. Maybe compared to Matt but not to the average guy.
Tommy knows his sh!t. No noob there. But vehicle limitations are vehicle limitations.
He’s a buffoon
There’s not one smart off-roader who will bitch at you for choosing safety over cinematic shots. You can always fight another day
Exactly 😂
Proper training gains confidence and skill. I've been watching for a while. Most if not all the offroad content on this channel is mild. The first time I see some fun trails and Roman shuts it down. Safety is always first, but just because you're scared doesn't make it unsafe. If that's the case, you might as well stop offroading because anything can happen.
Did pretty well with those tires, throw some A/Ts on there and try it again...
This is the TFL I like.
I think you accomplished what you set out to do....show the limitations of a stock Jeep on street tires. You took it farther than most people would. Good call on bagging this trip and come back with better tires and a 2" lift next time.
Yeah that was a crazy trail for that jeep.
You absolutely made the right call there Roman! As someone who's rolled a Jeep and a Toyota I can tell you it happens so fast you're not even gonna know what happened. The tires were bad for sure but I think that jerky brake lock diff bs is what would've ruined your day. Gotta be smooth!
I am so glad my 2020 4Runner has a locker, and at a fraction of the price of a Wrangler Rubicon too
There’s no reason for anyone to roast you in the comments.
I have had a “stopped having fun” moment on Kelly Flats as well! That trail is no joke!
Thanks for this demonstration showing the limits of a stock base model jeep wrangler with Street tires.
Thanks for the kind words
There are 100 subaru owners saying I would have drove right up that with no problems.... RIGHT no way
All subaru owner secretly want to be jeep owners
Subaru does at least put all terrain tires on their vehicles
@billricheter5678 even on entry level trims?
@@lanceislateagain yes, it doesn’t make sense. Even though those are soft off-roaders. Bronco sport as well as Subarus use all terrain. Yet 4 runner and wrangler use all season
"I could drive my Civic up that" -The internet.
Great job dad!!!!!! Gotta keep the fun times safe!!!!
The guy in red shirt needs to stop giving directions next time. wrong angle to start with!
That's a good dad! That's a great son! Be proud of each other!
"Who's gonna call mom if the Jeep rolls with you in it?" 😂
Honestly. Roman being a worried father for his sons safety was the best part of this video. You can just hear it in his voice how scared he was lol.
I didn't see a single activation of crawl control.
BLD works 10x better using crawl control and setting your speed.
As a dad, this is one of my favorite videos you guys have done. Seeing Roman standing on that passenger side while Tommy was sliding right… no way he would’ve stopped that thing from going. But that was his boy in that Jeep. I get it.
Great father-son video. When your old man tells you to turn around it's better to listen to him rather than break his heart. Well done Tommy
REAL off-roading. This one gets a thumbs up.
The videos featuring Roman and Tommy are my favourites.
Same here, It's the classic TFL recipe for a good video
Tommy Dad is right on this one.
Should buy a set of the new BFG KO3’s for the jeep, perfect way to test out new tires.
Thank you guys so much for this content. Challenging a stock jl sport is very interesting but not rlly recorded and put on TH-cam. Loved the video.
Love TFL for exactly these kind of videos. Things don't always go as planned on the trail and decisions have to be made in the field.
Thanks for trying! Glad you guys decided to play it safe. Looking forward to "Round 2" with better tires!
I had a JL sport with 35x10.50x17 and rubi shocks along with sway bar disconnects, also picked up some rock sliders off a rubi… I put over 50,000 miles on it with in a year and made memories I’ll never forget!!
19:54 😂😂😂 winching down a hill.
Protective dad mode: Engage!
All respect to Roman that put his foot down when he felt it wasn't safe anymore!
You guys should have aired down to about 16psi that would have help alot. I didn't see any bulging on the side walls
Dad pulled the plug and that's it! No more fun today. He did it till he couldn't. Buy tires and come back. That was my first mod!!
This is one of the most exciting episodes in a long time!
You done good and responsible. Love you guys!!
DAD MODE ACTIVATED.
Best video. Love this. Thank you fellas!
10:44 Tommy looking out for his dad.❤😂
Yeah, Roman was right. As a father I completely understood him when he was talking about his only son. I actually enjoyed seeing a failure. Sometimes you have to make the right decision. Otherwise you end up on Matt's off-road recovery.
I have this exact build out but in a 4dr. I’ve done some things to make my life easier but fellas… the difference a disconnected sway bar makes is incredible. Yes you have to get down in the dirt to do it on a sport but this would have been a much different video. Just my two cents, don’t hate me please. Also love the content you and your dad do. It makes my heart happy.
Great video. Proof that every off-road adventure is an opportunity to learn something new
Thank you Roman. We learn something new everyday.
I like a lot of your videos, especially Jeep videos, but this one was particularly good to watch. The father son duo reminds me of me and my son. 😀
As a son, i get it. As a father, i get it. You made the right decision.
So the Jeep is more willing then the owner. Not many vehicles will do that.
That was great. The Jeep and driver did a great job. As a Dad I completely agree with Roman. It illustrates the importance of tires.
Good call Roman. Come back another day with some bigger/better tires and a winch!
He’s only son. I respect Roman some people are not lucky enough to have one.
I prefer to buy this jeep, just as it is (30K base price, no thrills) and let ME build it up so it can tackle this and other trails......I don't need the 60K 70K 80K add on......Awesome Roman, keep it safe!
Very entertaining video, you guys hit all the items on the “don’t do” list. When off roading, yet having fun does not require a fully built jeep.
