  • Wanted to take some time to run through all the different options you have for gear when welding in weather from 105 degrees and up or -40 and below. The trick is to stay as comfortable as possible while still putting out quality welds.

    Personally I just weld in a surplus pair of coveralls, a wool watchcap, and some laceless work boots. The coveralls let me wear whatever I want underneath so I just dress for the weather, but I technically did weld in a suit so that's neat I'd say

    So I can just get a denim jacket or something?
    Was going to buy a canvas jacket but not sure if it'd be ok for welding.
    Also, why are welding jackets usually that weird green color?

    good video, for a laugh, I already wear wool socks 100% year round & have for decades, thanks to working in a refrigerated dept. on cold floors, but even in summer on my day off, I only have wool socks, so that's all I wear, for prices, its possible to find cheaper, but $14.99 to $17.99 is my average costs today, a few years ago they were $10.99-$12.99, but inflation has drove price up, & I will tell a secret, look in January - February, stay on top of hunting for socks, just browsing a few times a week, & guess what, places mark down extra wool socks, "hunting" stuff, & you may can luck out & get them for $5.99 to $7.99, I bought all in stock at closeout last year, under 10 pair, but cant argue over them closeout prices. I have a green welding coat I put on for mig to help, & I bought it before I started learning about correct clothing, I keep it at shop to wear when doing major panel replacement, but until last year other than that coat, I never owned anything to wear specific for welding I just put on layers of holey T shirts, 1-2 layers of mechanic pants, & have been known to put on biker leather chaps over them, & in winter I would put on a biker leather coat that is worn out, but good for welding. so leather coat, & I do know all so well about dressing in layers, I have rode several times when it was down to -7F & basically rode 2 wheels majority of my life all winter, & only last 5 or so years have I slowed down, & not rode most of the winter on 2 wheels. I blame on old age. last year my first purchases towards this goal was semi-correct clothing, like the pearl snap shirts, denim jeans, I have worn mechanic pants close to 30 years or more. so I didn't even own denim, & now I even have some insulated denim, plus something similar to the carhart coats for pants, got a couple carhart coats, I was able to find "seconds" on line & with shipping cheaper to buy 2 pair than 1 coat locally. picked up welding caps, already have a few military baklavas? to cover face in extreme cold, so I think I am very close now, or at least close enough.

    would be nice for in a shop where i'm in and out of the cold all the time and its not really feasable to put multiple layers on and off all the time.

    (technical question) ran across a welder making up UP flanges today, was kinda watching while waiting to unload, he was taking 7018 dipping the rod in a bottle of water then welding with it, now my whole life I have HAD it BEAT INTO MY HEAD KEEP YOUR RODS DRY! what do you know about this technique?

    • @Welderbeast
      @Welderbeast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m with you, that makes no sense to me. Low hydrogen rod is meant to be welded with as little moisture content in the flux as possible! What video was this?

    The black pig skin welding jacket, is it worth it? Where can I order that from?

    • @Welderbeast
      @Welderbeast  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought is was worth it cause it made welding in the summer better than a full cow hide jacket cause it's thinner. That being said I rarely used it down south, I brought that with me from Alaska so I don't know that it would be the best in the southern sun. I cant remember where I got this one but you should be able to find a pig skin weld jackets if you look it up on google.

    Can I get material info for shirts and pants from best to worst?

    • @Marshmallow_Embers
      @Marshmallow_Embers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I don't weld so keep that in mind but for fire resistance and coming from someone who makes clothes the best to worst is: Heavy wool twill (I hit my leg with a hot rod wearing wool pants and didn't even feel it), cotton canvas, a lightweight woven or knit wool, cotton denim, cotton woven or knit. The ones you want to avoid from least likely to light you on fire to worst is: cotton spandex blends (watch labels on jeans most have spandex), linen, nylon, polyester, viscose, rayon, and last but worst acetate though if you manage to find something made out of that fabric I'll be surprised.
      Tldr: Wool best, other natural fibers are good, avoid synthetics.
