My first welding teacher was a welder building battle ships in WW2. Boy were those great stories. He told us how after the ships were built, they had to remove the "stainless steel" turrets and put regular steel in because the bullets ricocheted and killed the sailors.

The best one is to lay a firecracker in front of the weld. You can be at the other side of the shop when it goes off....

I use those normal composite with the auto darkening lenses that you see fabricators use and just add a small piece of leather to block out back light and what is nice about the normal auto darkening composites is they allow you to have an option for grinding as well, so you use the helmet as a face shield as well.

I worked as a helper offshore on the pipeline in the late 90s and early 2000s. Very few guys wore the pancake shields and a lot of times the welding foreman wouldnt allow them.
Top 5 Pipeliners I knew
1 Chic Liepert. Didnt retire till he was 70. Could run a root like nobody's business. Very pretty caps
2 Johnny Lyles. Cool dude super good welds and easy to work for.
3 Mr Brad. Liked his rods bent so I would always have a stack bent for him. Always had plenty of good pot
4 Carol Trahan. This guy could weld the crack of dawn to the break of day. Cool mfer
5 George Pendergraft. I will never forget you George and thank you for showing me what it took to be the best helper I coud be. Sorry I never did break out
Man, thanks for this info. I work for a water district, and we have welders that we hire to help us out. One of them showed up with this type of helmet. We had never seen this type before and almost thought the poor guy was broke and made it himself. He said he was a pipe liner and lots of guys use them. We shrugged and thought he looked like a minion. He was a damn good welder. Cool to see this video explaining it.

excellent speaker, very clear speech and perfect delivery! I'd never seen a hood like this, but I understood it immediately.
I was a track welder on a small railroad, and almost all my welding was done outdoors...that's where the tracks are. Every track welder I ever worked with used a conventional "sugar scoop" hood, and would stuff rags into the top, to try to keep the sun out. Others would just struggle with the sunlight and hope for the best. I saw a catalog one time, and saw this leather hood....kind of a leather bag, with the usual harness setup for supporting a welder's hood. It covered the whole head and down the back of the head as well. Perfectly dark inside. I used it indoors as well, and it was good for crawling under a piece of track machinery to paste something back together...tight quarters and a rigid hood would not fit in there. No sizzling BBs in the ear canal, either. Also very nice for air-arc work at 400 amps with a blast of air blowing stuff out of the puddle.
Haven't seen a single pancake here In Sweden.
When I worked as a welder I had a speedglass hood, with a fan unit around my waist. Ridiculously expensive, but since I didn't need to buy them myself, totally worth it. No back light, fresh air, and really comfortable! And with a Kevlar under hood you didn't get eny sparks on your head/neck at all.

If you welding downhill outside in the sun the pancake keeps all the glare out and you see so much better and it’s pretty light as well!!!!

My advice to those serious about achieving the goal of becoming a certified welder and fitter is start as a laborer or welders helper on the job. You'll learn many things crucial to prime workmanship that a welding school doesn't teach. Welding School can provide you the equipment and technical training applicable but you can't limit yourself by practicing "in position" all the time. Practice 3g & 4g (vertical & overhead) and 6g on pipe (45° axis). As a helper I used my breaks and lunch times practicing on scrap. I passed my 1st field test ( 3g uphill , e7018) '72 because the welder was too fat to get in the fuel tank through its porthole. Practice, practice, practice.....Be the best you can be but without self-pride. Stay humble and you'll learn much more than otherwise. Compete with your own potential, not with someone else. Be dynamic, not stop&go.

@@alemgas im 17 have a mig welding t joint certification from aws also have osha 10, forklift certified, leansix sigma, crane and rigging safety and knowledge course, and cpr/aed gotten within a year now im just waiting to turn 18 and get a job welding currently working at kubota nothing is impossible my friend

First time I saw one of these hoods it was being used by someone to weld a precast parking structure together. The advantages you mention in this video also apply to building construction.

I never used a Pancake hood, but used the Sugar Scoop as you call it for 24 years, welding in various Maintenance jobs, from Crown Cork Can Plant, to repairing tractor trailers. Mostly 7018 stick welding, but some Aluminium Mig and TIG Welding. Enjoy your channel , very much, as I am retired 10 years on June 1st.

Another great video for the beginner! Something you might consider for the winter also is a nomex hood,the kind made for firefighters & race car drivers, they are fire resistant but not fire proof,the point is they are made like a full open face ski mask,They are used by firefighters as part of their turnout gear, but I have found after retiring from the vol.f.d.that they work pretty good for welders & in the extreme cold winter weather they will keep your head warm,especially for old men with bald heads!( & younger guys with bald spots .)

@Austin Ross, very well done video! Man, things have changed since I was a pipeliner back in the later 60's. The welders waited for me to put a bend or a sag on a joint, then my side boom operator set the joint down on the right of way next to the ditch for them. Don't remember some details of the pipe but it was naked 36" × .250" steel with beveled ends. When the welders finished welding up the joint, the welds were X-rayed then the dope gang wrapped the pipe. Again, don't recall the details. We worked as late as we needed to on tie ins and "shooting the pig". The welders were men from all over and loved what they did. Our boss Jack Maggard took good care of us all. I had a chance to go to Brazil with the company (McCathern Pipeline) after military service was out of the way. They were drafting back then and I got my Welcome to the Army of the United States letter in August of 68. Now, about those bald spots on your head........lol!
I welded pipeline for 35 yrs and wore the sugar scoop for the first decade before getting introduced to a pancake...love the pancake shield and wish I'd have known about it earlier!
Greatly appreciate this video, I do welding for a hobby in my shop and the overhead lights are some of the brightest I had installed. The back light is such a pain and I’m actually going to try one of these pipeline masks. Appreciated!!
You can take a piece of leather or nonflammable fabric and put it between your welding hat and helmet, letting it drop down the back. It'll block the light and if it doesn't block enough you can roll up another piece and stuff it up front
I've been hobby welding since I was 18 and never knew it was called a "sugar scoop". Love to learn something new.
Pancake, the side came off awhile back. So I just put a glove over my ear if I need to. #2 is the sugar scoop with the fieldres mods. Great channel & great haircut
I'll never wear a hoodie or hooded jacket while welding. In my early 20's I was welding a ladder on a grain silo. I'm 20+ feet in the air welding and wearing a hoodie when I feel a tug on my feed line. My buddy was desperately trying to tell me that my hood caught some slag and burst into flames. 17 years later and I still don't wear a hoodie of any type to weld.

@thegrandfinale2 it's not just a good suggestion. At my company all welding is halted 20 minutes before calling it a day. Not only to clean up, but to ensure there's nothing scorching hot before leaving. We also have an old wives tale about being extra cautious on Thursdays. Because of one reason. Payday being Friday means it is cheaper on the company to die Thursday.

Something that I've come across recently is adaptation to your surroundings and the tooling you have at hand.
Often times in the trade world we look for the "easy" way out. I.E. auto dark hoods, step drills, etc.
I would greatly enjoy seeing a video of minimalist tooling out on a job and how to over come said obstacles.
No job will ever be the same, as with what you bring to said job.
Ambidextrous welding is something that I feel would be very fitting to your channel. As well as welding without a resting point for free hand welding and act cutting.
I do not intend this comment to give you any grief, just something to brew in your mind.

I a,m a homeowner hobbyist amateur bird hit welder, I have a 30-year old 120V buzzbox AC welder, and I use an auto-darkening hood that I put a piece of wool felt over the back to eliminate backlight.

I'm curious how you feel about the automatic darkening hoods. I used a friend's the other day for a few hours and really liked it.
The algorithm has blessed you with my view. I don't weld. I don't work in an industry that does welding other than spot welds over blind pins, but this was far more interesting than I'd have thought.

I love my pancake hood. But I cannot use it because everything nowadays is all about “safety” I work in a structural building plant as a welder, and there are lots of flashes from air arc and just other welders when I use my regular mig welding hood. I honestly wish I could use my pancake for the exact reasons you explained. No sparks in the eye/face, no flashing, very lightweight, and just very convenient.

I've been a Welder for damn near 40 Years , Race Car Fabrication, Structural, Jobbing Shop amongst other jobs (gotta Pay the Bill's right ) but this is the first time I have ever heard of a Pan Cake helmet , I have used many Visor's including what you call a Sugar Scoop , but I have found my Speed Glass to be the very best Visor I have ever bought and used, it has a Proban hood like your Sugar Scoop chin flap, but covers the back of your ears and neck and has served me well when working outside. Workshop welding to Gas Pipelines.

I began welding 1972 with Magnolia Marine in Greenville, Ms but as a "laborer/welders helper". I was only 16 then, still in high school and worked there my summer break. I've certified 2006 AWS D1.1/5.20 all positions unlimited thickness as the test 3g(uphand) & 4g was on 1". Despite its occupational hazards and the burn scars I have to show for it all I would strongly suggest "fitting/welding" as a prime occupation.

I always appreciate your advice and tips. I only weld at home usually small farm repairs or small welding projects. I just have traditional welding helmets that flip up. They have different shades of lenses. Two are cheaper auto darkening and a couple with flip up welding lens so you can see to chip with a clear lens. And just yesterday I had back light problems trying to repair the tailgate on my dad's 1963 GMC pickup. Also I once got a hot metal spark in my eye while wearing safety glasses and a welding helmet that was down. The welding lens was up and was looking through the clear lens while using the metal chop saw. Sometimes shit just happens.

Totaly get that .I'm not actualy a welder as such but I do it as a hobby and it's required occasionaly from me on a non structural basis at work .I've been in confined spaces with welding taking place and that light glare +UV can come at you from all over the place when space gets tight and the metal is shiny .

scoops are used for most field and structural welding because they fit over hardhats.
I absolutely love my yeswelder true color auto darkening Hood. I am a truck equipment mechanic. I don't weld all day everyday but it's not a very heavy Hood it is fairly comfortable

Pancake is my favorite for outside work. In a tank not so much. Outlaw leather makes some cool looking hoods that I have looked into and definitely considering one of them for tank work!

I’ve always worked at welding/fabrication shops, I started out with a Lincoln Viking 3350 auto darkening flip down hood, then went to the 3350 with 4c lens but now my favorite hood is my miller digital infinity with clear light lens
As a kid I was always skiing at Soldier Mountain, just beyond the ski area. Watching Tin Cup and your video about pancake hoods (made in Fairfield, ID) brings back a lot of memories
You could Put a piece of leather on top of your sugar scoop. To cover the back of your head and keep out backlighting.

when i started learning to weld, early 70s, i was told the most important thing was that the welder be comfortable. at first that was a joke. but NO its very important. i was hard faceing trencher teeth with torch. with a #4 lens. and my eyes was burning. so i stacked a #3 and 4 together. my eyes stopped burning.

I started my apprenticeship as a welder in late 70s that advice from my father who was also a blacksmith/welder always sticks in my mind and so true.
You know why this is interesting?. He doesn't um and ah at all, just talks from experience and learned knowledge.
3m adflo solves all of those issues and keeps you cool and doesnt let you breathe in fumes.

I always have a pancake and a huntsman flip hood. Huntsman is lighter than the" sugar scoop" as you call it. But have worked with a lot of guys who use them.

When I did structural, before doing only in shop fab now, I would just put a towl over my head if the glare got real bad. Needless to say, that sucked in the summer time here in SE Texas 🤣

My papa was a pipeliner and my uncle was a pipeliner.... My papa wore a regular pipeliner for 50 years as a welder and my uncle where's a pancake for 25 years.... I work indoors and like a speedglas ..... But I can see where a pancake would come in handy ....thanks for the video
You forgot one of the biggest reasons for it, the simplicity and price. It's easy and cheap to fix or replace even in the field
Once I needed bi-focals I also had to go to a big lens helmet as one looks “down the nose” to see through bi-focals and the normal helmets block the vision. Also real picky about cutting goggles for the same reasons.

Really interesting, I've never seen anything like this in the UK. I restore vintage cars and motorcycles so I do a reasonable amount of fabrication although I'm not continuously welding all day every day.
I must admit, that problem you mentioned with the light coming in down the side of the inside of the mask does get on my tits a bit but I usually put a cover over the vehicle I'm working on or if I'm outside try and Jerry rig my way around it.
Most of the full-time welders are using those ventilated masks like the Speed-Glas ones now from what I've seen. They're all sealed up to the face.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this, always fascinating to see how different people do jobs different ways (and I can guarantee you're a better welder than me, lol) I only have two basic college qualifications on MIG, ARC and gas. I've had a fiddle with TIG under supervision from a proper fabricator and can get steel to glue together quite nicely but I made a small hole in some ally tube ... into a very big hole lol 😆
