    At work I prefer a TKL with a separate numpad on the left. I do a lot of CAD at work and i like being able to input numbers quickly w/out having to take my hand off the mouse. I am really surprised with how many people are saying they dont use the numpad. It's sooo much faster than trying pick numbers out of a line

      i think its preference. i myself is a full keyboard fan. i dont usually use them as numpad i bind them for something else and the enter key next to my right thumb is perfect.

      I think I might have to try this. My desk is very limited in how much space I have on the right, but has tons of room on the left.

      I love my numpad but at home i don't use it much. I would rather have the space I think. Tough choices.

    • @Perfidion
      @Perfidion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, the numpad is the business when it comes to numerical data entry (punching in account numbers without it sucks)... but otherwise, it's kind of redundant. I mean, when I'm not at work, the numpad on my Logitech is basically a dust trap.

    • @smievil

      doesn't numpads feature most of the arrow keys and insert to pg-down button if you toggle numlock, could probably achieve something if you cut out arrow keys instead of the numpad it would be one more row of buttons though.
      paying stuff would be annoying without a numpad.

    I bought a tkl, and quickly learned how often I used that side enter.. It was tough getting used it, but I don't think I will go back. I love how much space I have now. Now that I think of it, my mouse has a button I never use. Maybe I could program it to function as an enter key!

      some have removeable numpads.
      but i dont see any real advantage in placing it to the left. for normal writing it would be a hindrance and for gamer it would be same as macro keys.
      plus perhaps there are other people like me. even a small row of macro keys makes a keyboard damn uncomfortable for me.

    • @Catcrumbs
      @Catcrumbs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TheHomerGE it's pretty obvious what the advantage is: you get the ergonomics of TKL + mouse but the functionality of a 100%kb. The only downside compared to a traditional setup is getting used to using the numpad with your left hand.

    Bought a TKL keyboard and have been super happy with it (MX Brown + CoolerMaster MasterKeys Pro S). About 2 months later I started regretting it when college classes started up and I had a MS Access and MS Excel classes back to back so I grabbed a wireless numpad on Amazon for $8. Now that those classes are over, I re-mapped it to be a macro-pad. Thing is super useful and runs off 1 AAA battery.

    • @CanuckGod
      @CanuckGod 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me it's the latter reason that you listed that keeps me with full size keyboards - I have macros set to all the numkeys - and also the positive of having the numpad there for quick entry when I use it for that purpose (which isn't all that often, but it helps). I do also find myself using the side enter a fair bit too, so there's that.

      Harambabe I got used to not use it in only 2 days. And I'm never looking back at a full keyboard. TKL just makes everything so easier. And you don't have to pay for a numpad you barely use, assuming you're mostly gaming on your PC and don't enter too many numbers everyday.

    these arguments make sens... for an english keyboard.
    Because on my french one for example I really need an numpad to write numbers without switching to caps to use the one over the letters because these are already used for our special letters such as éèçà and so on.

    I used a TKL until I've started to work with programming seriously. Then I went back to my old Mionix ZIBAL 60, which I've found to be an absolute wonder. Solid build, perfect wristrest, and the full size is alot easier for me to code on than my TKL K65 ever was. Granted I do not use the numpad that often, but i find it alot easier than having a separate one connected to my computer whenever I'm paying bills and such. ALSO: Cherry MX black switches are totally underrated, as is this Mionix Zibal 60 keyboard.

    Nice video concept.
    I don't know where I stand on the subject TBH. I have a full size and have had full size KBs for a long time.
    I don't use the numpad very often but feel I'd miss it if it wasn't there. Truth is I would no doubt get used to working with out it.
    Think I'd have to try one for a while along side my full size one to see.

    Yes they are right for me! I love having more desk space for my mouse and love having less sized keyboards! I never thought I would say that, but i went on the 10 keyless kick about a year ago...and never ever went back o.o
    they are ultra amazing and allow for so much for desk space, flexibility, mouse space and precision. AND the mouse is literally RIGHT THERE next to you and you press enter. i used the numpad maybe 3 percent of the time lol. it's great im never going back to the other ones

  • @Outfrost
    @Outfrost 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dmitry, I like your approach of listing more pros & cons of reduced size keyboards, but as a happy user of a fullsize Quickfire XT, I feel like I must correct you a bit or simply disagree on a few accounts ;)
    1. First off a little PSA: You don't need fancy macro functionality built into your keyboard to remap keys and assign various functions to them. In Linux under X11 use xkb keymaps, and in Windows, use AutoHotkey. This is how I reassigned the volume keys on my Quickfire XT to launching some applications and the right Ctrl to Menu (since this board doesn't have a Menu key and I use it all the time). When it comes to Windows software, there is probably not a single program out there that's as tiny, useful and beautifully robust as AutoHotkey.
    2. A fullsize keyboard does not have to overlap with your mousepad, and even if it does, it doesn't have to be at an awkward angle. If you have a large mousepad, remember that you can rotate it to match or almost-match the orientation of the keyboard. It's not a bad idea even on its own, especially for FPS gamers, because it can give you more room for sideways movement of your mouse.
    3. Your hands (and forearms) are in a more natural position when closer together, but many people, including me, prefer their hands (and forearms) to be slightly further apart. Take a look at pro gamers at LAN tournaments - some have their mouse and keyboard close together, some prefer a more spread out layout. This means that many people wouldn't necessarily decrease the distance between their hands even if they had a reduced size keyboard.
    4. You don't have to rotate a fullsize keyboard to use it comfortably. Back to pro gamers at LANs - many of them have their keyboards rotated and such, but that is because of their overall setup, sitting position, forearm placement and so on, rather than because of their keyboards being large. I think there are pros who use reduced size keyboards and still place them at ridiculous angles. I have my fullsize keyboard perfectly straight on my desk. Every time I tried typing or gaming while having it rotated I felt less comfortable and went back to having it aligned with the desk immediately.
    5. Having the keyboard offset to the side from the centre of the screen is not necessarily a bad thing. It's not 100% perfect for typing a lot, but it is preferable for gaming, and it helps with using the mouse (i.e. not having to extend your mouse hand further away than your other hand).
    6. On a more subjective note: I have become so accustomed to a fullsize keyboard, that I feel restricted when I can't use all the keys. For example, in CS:GO, I stumble with buying items through the menu, because normally I have all the necessary item buys bound to keys on the number pad. In general, I find the presence of a number pad very convenient for various tasks and keybinds.

    • @CanuckGod
      @CanuckGod 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fully agree with you on the AutoHotKey thing, it's been a lifesaver over the years. Thing is, a lot of my AHK macros are set to the numpad, so I'd have to relearn everything in terms of where I wanted to put those if I decided to switch from that, and I'm not sure I want to do that... so I'm more than happy to stay with the full keyboard. As it is, my keyboard/mouse drawer in my desk can fit both very easily without any problems, so the only positive for switching would be travel distance, and for me that's not really an issue either. As you said, there are many positives for those of us who like their full size boards too, so it basically comes down to personal preference.

    • @Montisaquadeis
      @Montisaquadeis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Tesoro Tizona is the ONLY keyboard I have been able to find that allows you to attach the keypad to the left. For me that would be the ideal side for the keypad as it allows me to move my hands closer when gaming and allow for mouse use when enter numbers which I do several times a day and kind of rely on my numpad but I just wish I could move it to the left which would be a much better spot for me.
      Also the Tesoro Tizona is pretty cheap with its starting price of $70 comapred to something like the Claymore which is $150 for just the core and $250-$290 for the full keyboard including the numpad.

  • @nope1918
    @nope1918 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would never be able to do with a TKL keyboard. The numpad is great. Typing in my card number for online shopping, entering equations in excel spreadsheets, using it as extra hotkeys in RPGs, etc. I just can't do without it when I'm using a desktop. I make use of most of the extra keys fairly regularly, and it doesn't really take up that much more space. Of course, I also have a relatively small mousepad (with high mouse sensitivity) so the keyboard overlapping the pad isn't an issue at all for me, if I couldn't accurately use a high sensitivity mouse it would be more important to allocate space to a larger mousepad. And if I'm on the go and using a laptop, well, there's already a keyboard built in and I would argue that even if a TKL is more portable why would you do that? Just use the keyboard that's built into the laptop.

    I like a TKL for couch gaming, but I'm still too reliant on the number pad to make the switch elsewhere. For me, I think the ideal solution would be a left-handed number pad. It would also allow me to enter numbers while still keeping my right hand on the mouse. Maybe I'll eventually move to a TKL with a separate number pad. Of course, I'm still using a G13 & macro keys on my main keyboard as well, so it might just end up being too much on the left.

    It honestly just depends on how useful the num pad is to you. If you use it quite often, then use a full sized keyboard. If they are not too useful to you, then you should consider a TKL.

    You're spot on about the lack of side enter key being the thing that you'll notice the most when you're switching. But once you use your TKL keyboard for a few days and get used to it, there's no going back. Seriously, unless you're someone who works with numbers a lot, there's no reason why TKL keyboards are not the standard.

    yes it has a smaller footprint, but only by like 3-4 inches. i mean i understand situations that 3-4 inches could be important, but if its just gonna stay on your desk its whole life, just get a full size. its cheaper, you get the numpad and right enter key

    As much as I like the idea and feel of TKLs, they could never become my daily driver. I've grown up with the full size boards, and have always used the numpad for number typing and macros in games.
    That being said, I was one of the people who helped Kickstart the Wooting Analogue keyboard, which happens to be TKL. Who knows - Maybe they'll convince me otherwise?
    The price difference is definitely down to supply and demand. If you look at extreme cases like the Ergodox, or even just keycap sets, you will quickly see how seemingly cheaper things end up being more costly overall.

    TKL are more expensive because the demand is less than for full sized keyboards. This means they have to spread the manufacture, distribution and marketing cost to fewer units, hence the price is higher. Also in production they need to create a separate manufacturing line to accommodate the different parts in some cases readjust the whole assembly process. . In goods manufacturing economics, the higher the quantity produced for a product using the same components, assembly line, labour, and so on, the cheaper it will be. Just because it has 1has 17 less switches, caps and 20% less plastic, aluminum, solder, pcb, is not enough to drive the price down.

    This video feels like he's SUPER biased towards TKL keyboards....
    "TKL Looks better on your desk" - Entirely subjective
    "Full Size will overlap with mousepad and be wobbly" - Uhh.. Only if you overlap them, and do so in a silly way...
    "Keyboard will be centered in front of your monitor" - Can still do that with a full size, and if it's off center, so what?
    "TKL keyboards have better build quality" - Uhhh.... wat?
    "Don't even mention the missing num pad" - Uhh.. Yeah.. Let's just gloss right over the biggest disadvantage. Who ever types numbers in their computer anyways?
    Absolutely no mention of the fact that TKL keyboards are more often missing media and macro keys.
    TKLs have their place, but this video should be titled "Why I Like TKL Keyboards" and not passed off as advice for others.

      How on earth can you center a non-tkl keyboard in front of your monitor? Please do tell me.
      Also, the reason why I went with a tkl keyboard personally is so that I could center my keyboard in front of my monitor. I found it was a real pain in the butt whenever I wanted to start typing but my left hand and right hand would be at completely different lengths away from the keyboard thereby making my typing experience absolutely abysmal.

    • @Balot_Rune
      @Balot_Rune 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      while I would agree that TKL looking better on your desk is subjective, the point of having a full size keyboard centered and having no issues is not always the case as it more often than not depends on the size of your monitor and having the keyboard centered can help you to feel less tired after spending hours typing something (not to mention the streches you should do on a regular basis), the point of better build quality is just for the fact that they flex less during transportation - but that is an irrelevant point to you isn't it? the missing num pad is the whole reason you would consider a TKL board and not a medium sized one he mentioned at the start of the video. he also DID mention the lack of dedicated media controls as for macro keys - they don't belong on a keyboard you would get only for the reason of having a minimalist setup (which he is mainly focusing his attention on in the video anyways)

      @markotikvic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Pytte how often do you enter keys?

    I think one of the main reason why build quality is better on a TKL keyboard - is that it's for a narrow market or an enthusiast market :)
    They're more expensive because it's a niche market - TKL is probably chosen by those who just wants one, and it's not like they need one - so they're more expensive, because people who just WANTS one, are often willing to pay more.

The lack of numpad hasn't been a big deal for me, but if I ever need it intensively I'll just get an external one, with the benefit of being able to place it wherever I want. You can even get them mechanical now, I've seen a few in places like massdrop.

    That middle sized keyboard are usually called TK, or "TenKey" keyboards, because they combine the numpad with the page and arrow keys. I find that these keyboards are a lot better and more functional than TKL keyboards, because you still have the functionality of the full keyboards, while getting more desk space and the smaller, sleeker design.
    I currently have the Cooler Master Quickfire TK. I'm really hoping they release an RGB Masterkeys M keyboard sometime in the future. It's essentially the same as the Quickfire TK, except with that sweet RGB lighting scheme.

    TKL are stupid (i own one). What we really need is 'lefty keyboard', where they arrow part and the numpad part are on the left side.
    Having these extra key on the right side made sense before the mouse. But fully removing them is stupid because we could just move them to the right side instead.
    HardwareCuck, find us decent lefty mechanical keyboards and do a review. I would disable my ads block for this.

      "But by moving the arrows and the numpad to the left, the keyboard length remains the same"
      Irrelevant because you center the keyboard on the space bar. Whatever hang over the other side don't matter. As long as there are 'close to' center room for the mouse on the other side.

    I started out doing everything on a typewriter so I type alphanumerically. A TKL just fits better as I don't use the ten key anyway. I don't go from the letter to number keys by changing my hand position like I see a lot of younger people do. I type and register numbers without having to change my hand position which saves a lot of time over a day especially when in putting license info.

    I'm a software dev and avid gamer. I've never missed the numpad. Except for hotseat Samurai Showdown tournaments in MAME on one keyboard. MAME is probably the only time i've used the num pad significantly. One could use it for inputing say ip addresses or doing calculations, but I've adjusted to the num row so I'm more comfortable with it now, so it's probably a matter of habbit. TKL all the way, especially mechanical ones.

    Although the keyboards might be more expensive in my opinion they are much more efficient. For example if you are in a work space it will take up less room unlike a full size keyboard. They are also more comfortable and much more minimal so for a clean setup I recommend going with TKL keyboards.

  • @SirCaco

    My desk space is restricted. With my old keyboard, I had to use a small mousepad, and my mouse bumped into the keyboard when I tried to quickly aim to the left. This happened often enough to be a problem, so I got myself a tenkeyless keyboard (made the upgrade to a mechanical keyboard while I was at it as well, definitely don't regret that either), and now I have a medium mousepad, which, given the fact that I play on relatively low/medium sensitivity, is more than enough space for everything except EXTREME air strafing. So yeah, if you don't have a lot of space, a TKL keyboard can make a world's difference.

    Numpad is alright for number typing, but i don't use it enough to warrant the space wastage and the slight annoyance of having my mouse further away.
    60% for me is overall a gimmick even though i'm a VIM user. Windows still requires arrow keys and using FN for additional actions/arrows/other layers just feels clumsy to me.

    I tried a TKL keyboard for a while but just couldn't get used to it, I much prefer having an actual keypad on a full size keyboard. Old habits die hard I guess
    I also have to enter French accented characters frequently so the numpad is essential for me.
    To each their own obviously ... buy what suits you best.

    TKL's are more difficult to sell to a wide audience -> volumes are smaller -> price needs to be higher.

    I bought the Red Dragon Kumara Mechanical TKL keyboard about 5 months ago and have loved it so far. My desk isn't necessarily cluttered with stuff, so a full length keyboard wouldn't be in the way, but I find the compact design of TKL keyboards more appealing to me personally. I only use computer for gaming, social media, and school work, so the absence of the number pad isn't that much of an issue for me.

    I'm currently owning a keyboard with detachable num pad, which still is the perfect solution for me. For normal gaming & work needs my setup is TKL with macro buttons (normal combinations like Copy, Paste, ...). And if handling a larger amount of numbers is necessary I simply attach the num pad at any side of the base.
    And the missing macro buttons on TKL keyboards actually stop me from going mechanical, I miss the concept of detachable num pads.
    Products like the Asus Claymore are only missing the macro keys and wrist rest, otherwise it would be a possible succesor to my current Sidewinder X6.

    For all those wanting to buy TKL a keyboard Varmilo VB87m is a great option as its also wireless so, it compliments more to the portability factor. The only downside is the price (120$) and its only available on massdrop.
