Why Several Cheap Tripods Are Better Than One Expensive Video Tripod

  • What is the best tripod to buy for video? Least expensive? Most expensive?
Buying a tripod can be daunting task when there are so many options. But social media influencers will tell you to buy the best, but is the most expensive tripod really what you need?
Having a few cheap tripods will be more beneficial in the long run than one very expensive tripod. With more tripods you have more options, greater flexibility and better control of your workflow on any given day.
If you specialize in corporate interviews, you can get away with one tripod. But if you are a film maker, you need a tripod that suits the need of any given shot. So having more options is really important.
While it is nice having an expensive tripod for your shoots, they really are less important than most people think. In fact, when making films cameras are mounted all over on car rigs, jibs, HiHats, dollys, overhead rigs, cable rigs.....
Most cameras will spend more time moving than sitting on a tripod, so why invest $3000 or more into a tripod?
For that money, you could buy half a dozen tripods, a dana dolly and a doorway dolly and have a much more comprehensive set of tools for filming.
Of course for the boring talking head video guys, you wont need those tools and it makes sense to blow your wad on one tripod.
But who really wants to spend their life filming talking head videos?

Tripods seem dangerous. Best to stay away from them!
Seriously though; I have a $60 used Sachtler/Cartoni tripod/head combo to pick up. I hope they are not just toys.
Would love to learn about what Mr Dog Poop likes when it comes to (counterbalancing) ball heads and smaller jibs.

Honestly, I have always used cheap $40 fluid heads because I am not usually behind the camera and most shots are static.
I bought a Sachtler ACE XL Fluid Head and it did not fit on an of my equipment because the ball tightening handle was too long. Ordered a $40 shorter handle on amazon and it did not tighten enough. So eventually I just cut the handle with a hacksaw and now we use it quite a bit.
That is my first experience with a counterbalance head. It's nice, but I am all for whatever gets the job done. Does the counterbalance make the shot better? Not really, but it might save your gear.

@@mrdogpoopstudios Thanks! While I have you on the line: have you used the ProAim Quado? I like the idea of a 4-legged stand for the reduced footprint.

@@Ronnie.Ericsson I have not used it or seen it. But for the price it looks solid. I guess I will order one and check it out. I generally like Proaim products but a few have been disappointments, however, they did offer to refund the ones I did not like, so you really cannot argue with that.
