Nash was one of the rare superstars who didn’t shoot nearly enough, but that was his DNA: point guard.

Yep if he took double the field goal attempts nightly he would have averaged 25pts/gm. When he wanted to score alot he could, from his 50 pt games in Dallas, to many 40 pt games in Phoenix, Nash would be just as nasty playing in todays NBA if not more lethal!

100%; In Dallas, Nash only decided to score when Dirk and Finley were having bad nights which was rare. As a result, I think even Cuban took Nash for granted which is why he left Dallas. Definitely the biggest mistake in Mavs history. 😞
The craziest thing about Steve Nash is that he almost had a 50/40/90 CAREER. His career shooting line is 49/42.8/90.4, which also places him juuuuuust above Steph Curry in terms of 3 point percentage. Also, as it is he's responsible for 4 of the 13 50/40/90 seasons in NBA history, but he was literally one missed free throw away in 06-07 from having that be 5 of 14. The man was an absolute machine

There is no doubt that Steve Nash is one of the greatest shooters ever but hen is also one of the best passers ever. I mean, Nash averaged the most assists per game SIX times in his career and he is fifth on the all-time assist career list. But those great stats don't do his passing justice because to watch Nash work in the Suns system was a sight to behold.

You are 100% correct. On nights that the Suns needed him to he would literally turn into Steph Curry and score 40 points because he was that kind of shooter but only did it when thar was the best course of action on that night. I mean the year the suns signed him the won an extra 25 wins just by adding him. And every single person he played with would go from a scrub to starter, starter to Allstar. The amount of disrespect Steve Nash has gotten over the past 10yrs is insane. There was no one more valuable to their team than Steve Nash was when he won the 2 mvps & the truth is his best season was the season after he won the 2nd mvp.
Nash's passes were so smooth and clean they weren't too crazy like Jason Williams but Nash hit them with crazy angles and then he had that layup under the rim that was un stoppable

Nash played basketball like soccer, run it fast and keep the D guessing where the scoring pass will come from. He made everyone on his team better and get their numbers.

@@christiansantiagophotography he had one of the nastiest handles, he walked into traffic like he didn't even have a basketball with him. I think the reason people think that is bc when he collapsed the defense was when his playmaking was at its best. the one thing where nobody can get close to him is those laydown/dropoff passes for dunks in the paint. he can just teleport the ball anywhere 360 degrees around him. there was a series against dallas where they just refused to send help when he touched the paint to "make him score"...and he averaged 40 in that series (which is the equivalent of almost 50 in today's game). reminds me of all the teams that have tried to do that against Jokic.
@@ericwilliams1023 His very mediocre defensive abilities are why I think he never deserved the MVP award. Shaq's skills may not have been as well rounded, and he might not have been as pretty to watch, but he was a disruptive force on both ends of the court, blocking shots, gobbling up re-bounds, and wreaking havoc on offense.
Nash was a great point guard, but he was never actually the best player in the league, imo. Defense is underrated. Even when we talk about the actual greatest players, we don't talk enough about their defensive abilities. One of the reasons why Jordan was so great was because he was an amazing defender who created a lot of turnovers and made it harder for opposing offenses to get clean shots off, but people don't actually talk about that very much when talking about Jordan.

Nash didn't look to score, he was a playmaker first and foremost, but was a terrific ballhandler and dead-eye shooter. Passing was pretty good too. :P
And a trash defender who rode the bench his first two years
One of the few players I actually enjoyed watching shoot free throws. He had it down.

If Nash shot more 3s he would of been as good a shooter as steph. He had one of the best shots to ever play, and it wasn't only from deep. He had a crazy mid-range game as well.
Imo He already was as good of a shooter as steph, but we only saw glimpses of it because he just had that pass first, you eat then I’ll eat mentality
@@liljaymoney8191 it's hard to argue he's not the second greatest pure shooter of all time, but based on FT% which is a pretty pure indicator, Steph is very slightly ahead. what puts steph so far ahead of everybody else is not just the pure shooting but how he gets his shots, being the greatest off-ball perimeter player of all time combined with a deadly on-ball game. but I agree that Steve Nash in today's league could be as deadly or more than Lillard from 3 and as Paul from the midrange. I would see him like being the perimeter version of Jokic, where he still loves feeding his guys more than anything but is ready to take over when needed bc of how heliocentric offenses are now.

I’m just saying My boy Steve Nash would’ve really gave Steph a run for his money, he almost had a 50/40/90 career and arguably the highest B-ball IQ of all time and he was a pass first player, So Imagine what would’ve happened if he shot first but still made sure everybody ate.
I live in Canada, but visited Phoenix so my Dad got tickets to watch him live against the big 3 Heat in the 2011 season. I'm telling you TV doesn't do justice of just how crazy his passiong and vision was. Unlike a lot of guys who rack up high assists, he was the one shifting the defense, creating advantages and creating open shots for his team mates. He always seemed to get where he wanted and then would whip a bullet cross court through a tiny window that no one would have thought was open to a wide open teammate. He had like only 4 points that game, but 16 assists that night and Jared Dudley had like 32 points lmao because of Nash. The entire Heat defense completely shifted to guard him and he hardly even took a shot, that's how good he was.
When ESPN was showing the most efficient shooters from each spot on the court in the 2000s, Nash was the best for like 4 or 5 of them. Nash also led his team to the best offense in like 9 straight seasons or something crazy like that. Counting stats could never do justice to what impact he had on winning. He was possibly the best passers of all time, and perhaps the best all-around shooter (mid-range, 3 point and free throw) of all time outside of Curry.
Sounds like Jason Kidd...who has more Finals appearances, a ring ,a way better defender and well ya know...

Yeah I thought he was overrated when he was in Phoenix then Dallas until I saw him play for Canada in the 2000 olympics and you could just see how he controlled the entire game. Could get anywhere he wanted to on the court and no one could stop the guy from doing that.

I would rather say “The system was great because of Steve Nash.”
He turned a trash team into a 55 win Team every year he made Amar'e Stoudemire a name because of Mari wouldn't have been able to get his own shot without Steve. Should Steve have 12 Mbps? No. You probably shouldn't even have 11 but he was the Chris Paul of those teams he was the engine that made those teams go.
I would go even further: Steve Nash WAS the system. D’Antoni just said, “score more points than the other team.” He had no system. He had Steve Nash. Those Suns weren’t nearly as good without Nash.

Steve Nash's passing on the pick & roll offense was legendary. Just like Stockton, Jackson and Kidd.

@@DarthJacobi people just look at assists totals as if that's the measure of how good a playmaker somebody is, particularly with players of yesteryear when they haven't gone back and looked at film. Nash is constantly dissecting the defense whether he gets the assist or not, in transition and in the half court. He is the offense. Stockton was great but a huge number of his assists are just basic passes to Malone. Stockton is unbeatable for longevity and being an iron man but his peak is nowhere near the other great playmakers. Nash led some of the best offenses of all time in the playoffs and they turned into mediocre to bad offenses whenever he was off the court. in terms of impact he's like a perimeter Jokic, a hub that almost automatically gives you an all-time offense.
That Steve Nash/Amare Stoudemire pick n roll is still the most devastating I've personally ever seen.I wasn't around for the Stockton/Malone duo.Amare had an automatic mid range jumper & was a great finisher around the rim.Of course you couldn't leave Nash open.Too bad Amare started having knee problems.They were a dynamic duo.That whole '05 Suns team was one of the most entertaining squads of the 2000's.I'd put them top 3 at least.
The difference is that Malone would still be an all-time great player without Stockton. I’m not necessarily sure that’s the case with Stoudemire. He’s a very skilled forward, and he’s got a good bag of tricks, but without Nash he didn’t do so well in NY. So many of Nash’s teammates had their most efficient seasons ever while playing with Nash because of how well he orchestrated that Sun’s offense.
Nash is, without a doubt, a better playmaker than Stockton was.
@AndrewH1994 Amare was an MVP candidate his first year in NY.Ended their playoff drought.Injuries killed all that, tho.I think he would've been great anywhere.The guy was like a more athletic, more explosive James Worthy.Probably had the best hands i've ever seen on a big man.He'd catch any pass.High, low, in traffic..didn't matter.Injuries did him in.
nash looping under the basket was genius - it forced defenders to flip to other side of the guys they were guarding - which often was too late
Nash’s brother Martin was a professional soccer player and was on the Canadian National team for a time. Family of athletes.
I went to a Warriors / Phoenix game and just remember Nash pregame not miss a single shot he took. My buddy and I kept looking at each other wondering if we were really seeing it. Didn't miss once while we watched. He was unreal.
The duo of Nash and Amar'e is the most attractive and I love it.
His impact on Canadian basketball is immeasurable.
Without Nash and Carter, there wouldn't be so many Canadians in the NBA today.

One of the most underappreciated superstars of all time. A lot of people just go with what Shaq says and don't remember how good he was. He's my favorite PG of all time. I loved everything about his game. I wanted to pass like him, dribble like him, shoot like him, his free throw routine and form, hell even when I'm gaming I'm still to this day licking my fingers to get a better grip on the mouse just like he did before his free throws. Amazing player. I even miss the Nash era Suns jerseys.
Easily in my top 3 PGs ever but that’s just me. I grew up watching this man and I will forever be inspired by his tenacity and his selflessness. Dude was capable of dropping 50 but would gladly take a 28/10/12 game with a couple steals as well. What a pure PG.
I recently had the opportunity to meet him, and he really could not be a more gracious, down-to-earth guy despite his mountain of professional accomplishments. The guy was truly a wizard on the court.

Amare didn't need Nash.That guy was ultra talented.His knees started giving out.That's the only thing that stopped him.People forget he almost won the MVP award his first year with the Knicks.And that wasn't even a fully capable Amare.That was post microfracture surgery where he started becoming a shell of himself.There was a time in '05 where I thought Amare & LeBron would be the face of the league.People would always hype up Carmelo Anthony to be the Bird to LeBron's Magic back then, but I always thought Amare was the better young prospect during that time.
And neither did Joe Johnson.Playing with Nash actually held him back.Turned his into strictly a spot up shooter when he was capable of more than that.He was another guy who left the Suns and started getting MVP considerations in Atlanta.

To be fair, the year of Nash's first MVP was Shaq's first year in Miami and he only averaged 23 and 10. That was a year Shaq might have won but Phoenix had a better record. The year of his second MVP, Shaq started a major decline and only averaged 17 points a game.
But Shaq said he had 28 and 10 both years 😂

I was able to run with him years ago. His speed was what you first noticed then you realized how fast and thunderous he dribbled the ball. He got up the court faster than any human I’ve ever seen. Guy was all class he ended up buying me white spot after haha. He learned I was sleeping in the grizzlies center so he bought me dinner. He maybe talked to the movie theater guys as well cause they gave me free moves for that summer. What a summer that was I’ll never forget it. He is a great person to his core.

I saw Nash play in High School. He was a man among kids. His team, St. Michael’s Academy, won the provincial title in a blowout. I can’t remember who they played. Maybe Vancouver College.

This is why he won it and his personal numbers were better than the previous mvp year. But even with Nash being my favourite player I was shocked he won it again. So Shaq kinda has a point but hey mvp to his team Nash was the guy hands down imo.

Nash, to me was your best ever all-round "Blue Colar" worker Point Guard. He wasn't tall, was super fast, wasn't a great leaper... but boy,did that guy go to work each and every game. Had great court vision and court awareness and awesome passing skills to go without which made his team mates better. He was a great shooter ( vastly under-rated in this category) and although not super fast like a Allen Iverson, or Strong & Physical like a Steph Marbury, he was very elusive with the ball and body, tough as nails, and had great ball handling skills. Lastly, his determination to compete was off that charts... like the "Little Engine That Could". Awesome point guard that was very worthy of the 2 Time League MVP honor bestowed upon him (Sorry Shaq 😊). He has to be considered in the category of the Top 10 Best Point Guards of All Time?
He worked hard on offense. He was non existant on defense. He played zero defense and it hurt his teams bad.
He was abt 6'3. That's a normal height for pg. AI and CP3 aint that tall...all the rest i feel you tho

First NBA game i have ever watched was Lakers vs Phoenix probably around 2006-2007 and fell in love with Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant right then and there.. Really had hope for them when they joined forces but they were too old at that point and had too many injuries.

Being a Suns fan, I appreciate this video. I still say that had Joe Johnson not had his skull fractured thanks to a dirty play by the Mavs Jerry Stackhouse they would have won at least 2 championships.

The guy could flat out score, had a picture perfect jump shot and wasn't afraid to pull the trigger. I watched him in college when he was at Santa Clara in the wcc and I want to say he may have led the nation in scoring that year but talk about a baller. His timing and spacing of the floor as a point guard was second to none and his toughness and relentlessness made him that much harder to beat. He was one of the best scorers I've ever seen, similar to jkidd but with even more shooting range in my opinion. Both bay area rooted ballers like G Payton and B.Shaw. Bay Area has always supplied the NBA with talented guards-dont forget about Damian Lillard up there high on that list of hall of famers and NBA greats. Steve Nash is the most underrated 2time MVP in all of sports and deserves all the clout getting thrown his way. Give the former 2xMVP his proper respect and paid dues. Nash was an animal and a sniper shooter all in one.

I remember watching quite a bit of Nash in his prime. He never stopped running.
The last year he was in Dallas, he was already transitioning. You could see it in his conditioning, his body changed he was leaner and had more of an aesthetic look to him. I believe he just continued that progress on his way to the Suns and they left Steve alone to run the entire offense. Mark Cuban thought he was a player on the decline...When people say it was the system, the system was more complicated in Phoenix with all the picking rolls than the Don Nelson system which is like a free for all, let em play type of offense. Steve put on a shooting clinic against Dallas the following year in the playoffs...That series was the best series I've ever seen from a PG shooting the ball, his shooting is very underrated. Dallas was helpless...When they were beaten in 5 by the Spurs, the Spurs had no answer for him either, the games were tight and down to the wire.
In that series Dallas dared him to score in Game 2, shut down everybody else, so he gave them 48. Next game he gave them 35 but still dished out double digit assists (and rebounds!). A lot of people who had complained that he didn't deserve MVP kept quiet after those two games. He still had weaknesses on D though.

Nash is my favorite NBA player of all time. He is the reason I developed my game around passing. Also, huge ups to Jeff Hornbeck for also getting me on the 3-point game.

I love soccer so it was really refreshing to see a player play the game of basketball like soccer. His attention to the open space was so special.
Watching Steve Nash in his MVP years as a kid felt like what it must've felt like to watch Pistol Pete. Like Linsanity but for the entire season. Numbers really can't show the impact he had on the league at that time. You had no idea what he was gonna do next but you knew it was gonna be a bucket. Spurs literally had to physically beat him up. His only flaw for me is sometimes he waited too long to start scoring himself. Sometimes it would be too late and he couldn't will us back in the 4th

It's strange, CP3 did flashy dribbling moves like Pistol Pete, but CP3 had less turnovers out of the three. Nash didn't make flashy dribbling moves, but was more flashier passer than CP3.

People who don't think Steve Nash is a good player, think that all game should be play
by speed or strength. During Nash days , I would prefer watching Steve play
than see Shaq play, coz there is always excitement what Nash will do in a game.
He is my favorite player. He is short, small, not fast can't jump, short arms, not particularly durable and not strong. However he is smart, works hard, never gives up, practice hard and studies the game like a mad man, tough as Kobe, Jordan, AI and reggie. LOYAL to his teammates and franchises. Super unselfish.
basically he is almost perfectly the anit Lebron.
I'd argue he was pretty quick since he went up against NBA-speed players, yet managed to make plays, but I agree about his tenacity and work-ethic.

So I got bored and looked up Steve's stats over his career because I always thought of him as a passer but MAN his shooting was impressive
13 seasons @ 40%+ from 3
9 seasons @ 90%+ for FT
And averaged over 40% and 90% for his whole 17 yr career. Impressive numbers. But for argument sake he only attempted around 10 shots per game. But was very consistent nonetheless.
nash was a great player. he had great handle and court vision. and he could shoot bombs.
Dude almost averaged a 50/40/90 for his career. (.490/.428/.904)
He was so fun, every game had some ridiculous play. I would still pay $ to watch him 🏀 today. Let's get an NBA alumni tourney together or something, c'mon party people!

The kid didn't understand that Steve Nash was doint that his entire career.
Nash and AI made me fall in love with basketball. Been watching NBA since late 90s but 00s is when I truly fell deep because of those two. I learned to know more about other players and organizations. Steve was my first true NBA hero. I'm so happy to hear AI talk about Steve that way. My favorite guy giving mad respect to my other favorite guy.

It was literally a match made in heaven with Nash in Phoenix. He would’ve been good anywhere he played, but that fast pace style with great IQ was something else. Nash would be insane in todays NBA
30 year old Steve Nash today taking 8-10 threes a game and having a crazy usage rate with his motor would be fun to watch. There would be 40pt 10ast games and 16pt 20ast games pretty damn often.
And his lack of defense would be generally more accepted.

I had an older cousin in Vancouver who played against him in high school. My cuz's team won, but Nash's assists were amazing, And those kids watching this video should know how he learned to dribble. Since grade school he was dribbling 2 TENNIS BALLS on each hand going to, and from school. Did this at home, at school etc. Even when he was at Santa Clara, still did it religiously as almost no one can steal the ball from him.

Basketball is a teamsport. It's great to see one player can score a lot, but Nash makes the whole team stronger and score better. I just enjoy watching Spurs-ginobli/Parker/Duncan under Pop and Phoenix/Nash games much more than any other teams (back in the old days)
Yep, and 1 of spurs big 3 greatest loses in the playoffs was getting completely SWEPT 4-0 against the Suns in the playoffs when they were in their prime!

A lot of people forgot he almost got three MVPs the following seasons. He had better numbers then he did the previous year. Nash era with the Suns was one of the best basketball here in Phoenix. Too bad we kept running into the Spurs.

@@averyce2 I like both their styles, including the differences. As for the others, I think Zeke is a bit underrated and kind of overlooked because he played on those deep, deep Piston teams and people get distracted by his beef with Jordan and controversial moments. Magic is Magic. A guy who could play all five positions and yet excelled as a giant PG - that's special. Price has to be one of the most forgotten players of all time, but look at all the stellar guards of his era. His shooting skills were insane. AI is almost Isiah 2.0. Peole know he was a superstar, but all the drama is what seems to get talked about. There's no way he was 6 feet tall and it's arguable that he's a PG or SG so consider what he did at his size and, wow. Man, I miss all these guys!
Loved watching Nash and Dirk with Dallas. Cuban should have never let him go.
Just one of Cuban's many basketball mistakes. Dallas would have won more than one title if they had kept Nash. Notably, Cuban just let another very, very good point guard in Bruson walk for nothing without even trying to match the offer.

He made every player on that suns team look like 10x more of a superstar than they would of been without him. Marion and stoudamires numbers were weak as fuck after not having him around
