I worked for the Utah Jazz for several years, including during the 97 and 98 NBA Finals against the Bulls. Game 6 of the 98 Finals, he pulls up in a minivan, loads up three kids in his arms. I'm walking in the building behind him and with those three kids in his arms, he holds the door open for me so I could walk through. Nicest guy off the court you could ever meet. Brilliant with a basketball in his hands.
Hated Stockton and Malone as a Bulls fan, but man he was a complete player. Doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves. He’s my number 1 PG.

Remember watching bulls games and being so mad that they were letting that white boy do that to them.
Stockton had 3 seasons where he averaged at least 13.5+ assists and at least 3.0 steals a game. That's insane. In 19 seasons he played all 82 games 16 times. 1st in total assists with the next closest being 3k assists away. 1st in steals with the next closest being 500 steals away.
That's fucking insane. Also, when it's LeBron, having a long career is praised but with Stockton it's overlooked and not even considered.

Yeah, he was an absolute monster. He wasn't flashy often though, which could be why more people don't talk about him. The lack of rings hurts him in conversations about great players too. It's crazy seeing his stats printed out like that!

I believe Stockton may be the most underrated player in NBA history. I can't think of many guys that were on his level that no one ever really talks about.
He's sadly a victim of his own unselfishness and love of setting his teammates up.
Clyde Drexler was second to the mvp behind Jordan in 92 and last picked for the dream team and was on no commercials at all despite dominating everybody in the west, and Kevin Johnson was voted to start over him in an all star game despite Clyde's stats being way better, that defines the word underatted.

Dirk is probably the most underrated tbh.
For me Stockton is the best pure PG ever. Not flashy like Magic, and no rings but a player that holds the all time record in assists and steals should be in the conversation of one of the top 20 players in the history of the NBA. There are 5 mayor stats. He leads in 2 of them. He, Malone and the 90s Utah Jazz were a joy to watch. Greetings from Uruguay and thank you Sean for your work.

@@ktapreswreckd921v9 Stock was no slouch. He had a 23 point 24 assist game vs Magic in the playoffs. Stock outperformed Magic that whole series.
Watching Stockton set screens was something else. He would sneak in behind guys, their team mates wouldn't expect the point to set the pick so they wouldn't warn them, and they would run blind into Stockton like he was a brick wall. 7 footers would get embarrassed by that and try to fight Stockton. I've seen it happen multiple times. I once saw Stockton screen 6 foot 11 Elden Campbell so hard that Elden came up swinging and the look on his face was like he was about to cry.
Dubs fan from way back…hated Utah cuz of Stockton n Malone being so unstoppable.
AND you tell no lies re Johnnie curling from under the rim up in the paint and PLANTING his chin in bigs guys chests. He was fearless.

Yep, he even screened Barkley, which was grotesque. Of course, Barkley moved him like a ton of bricks, but Stock held it long enough for Malone to score an open shot.
John Stockton is the definition of hard work and fundamentals. A true legend.
I watched almost every single Jazz game from 86-2002. There was and will never be a player as hard-nosed, disciplined, pass first minded, and humble like John Stockton. We will never see the tenacity and strength and effort for every play like we did with Stock.

Micheal Jordan is the best individual player ever but Bird is the greatest team player ever. 0-6 against Bird in the playoffs despite his unbelievable individual play. As a Bulls fan I absolutely hated playing the Jazz. Especially, Stockton. The man was a near perfect basketball player. His is the only jersey I own that isn't a Bulls jersey. That is how much I respect the man!
This is an interesting perspective. I always assumed that since Utah is a small market, people wouldn't be as interested in their players. It's really cool that you took notice, especially since he didn't draw much attention to himself (other than the ire of players, cuz he was chippy).
Running up against those 90's bulls teams was always nerve-wracking as a Utah fan. They were incredible to watch!

Some great teams came from the Western Conference throughout the ‘90’s, but my favorite team was your Jazz because they fought the hardest and made our Bulls play better than ever. Great team and organization. But that John Stockton is the best. Best PG of all time. I’m 51 and I’ve never seen a player like him. My top three, because of their work performance, Stockton, Barkley and Rodman. All three played with heart and were fearless. Blue collar guys.

Growing up in the area, I can honestly say Stockton and hornacek made us feel a certain way. Karl Malone was Karl Malone. Stockton and hornacek were the difference makers. I hated them almost as much as John starks and Reggie miller.

I played against Stockton when he was a Gonzaga Prep High school basketball player. One thing I can tell you about those "Catholic" high school basketball players is there TOUGHNESS!! They weren't the most athletic players in the country, but PHYSICAL and TOUGHNESS wise they were BADASS high school players!! I played for the RICHLAND BOMBERS down south of Spokane, but went up every pre-season and played SHADLE PARK , ROGERS , and GONZAGA PREP and those Catholic kids from Spokane were TOUGH, TOUGH players!!
The thing that set John Stockton apart is his MIND and his WILL TO WIN!! Stockton worked harder than nearly anyone else and he got BETTER and BETTER every year in high school, College, and each year in the NBA!!

Thanks for the dunk clip. I'm a diehard NBA fan at 45 yrs old. To see Stockton dunk iced the cake. I never liked him or Utah but always respected them even back to the Jeff Malone and Thurl Bailey and Darryl Griffith days. Stockton is definitely one of the greatest point guards EVER.

Hornacek is another underrated point/shooting guard from the era. Very hard working and hard nosed defender, opportunistic and consistent shooting guard and never close to the biggest guy on the floor. Fun fact he also red shirted (Illinois I think) played all 4 years too!

I was a Trailblazer fan. Every game the Blazer announcers would invariably predict what an advantage Clyde Drexler would have over Jeff Hornacek. But at the end of every game Hornacek would have 35 points while Drexler had 22. Seems like those Blazer announcers never learned.

John Stockton was one of the best to ever do it. He was great to watch for me. I like hard nosed guys that just got it done. He is so underrated and it's a shame that he has become somewhat forgotten by the NBA fans.
He was as complete as a basketball player as it can get. Not flashy but I loved the grit and scrappy nature with which he played.
Even though it's rare nowadays, I like to see guys stick it out with one team and I always liked that about Stockton.

Im one of the few Jazz fans here in the Philippines during the Bulls 90's era. Always loved how Stockton exemplified old school basketball. Bird, Stockton, & Bill Russel my top 3 favorites.
John is the NBA all time leader in steals and assists. Way ahead of the #2. Also, only missed a few games in his entire career.

I've always said this, Kareem/Lebron all time points record is more breakable than Stockton's all time assist record. Bron is only averaging like 28 ppg in his whole career and there's tons of players out there who could and had averaged that many points in a couple of solid season runs. They only have to worry about the longevity and not the ability to score. Meanwhile Stockton had a ten year run of double digits assists per game. Only Magic had a similar run like him and Stockton has more assist than Magic because he also has the longevity. You need a player with actual talent/skills to average that many assists plus doing it for years and years which makes the assist record harder to break.

Winning Championship ≠ Greater Player
I'm from the same hometown as John Stockton and the city has a lot of love for him. He also played at our local Gonzaga University so you know people been knowing who he is for a long time. Our only NBA team in the state though was the Seattle SuperSonics so you could imagine the real rivalry and torn emotions when they played the Jazz. Damn I miss the 90's, everything about it from music to movies to basketball to just being a kid and loving life.
Stockton has a very real argument for the best PG of all time. Not saying definitively that he is, but that he has to be seriously recognized as having a part in that conversation. No one since has come close, and there have been some excellent point guards since then.
People only care about rings. Which is a team accolade so it makes no sense. Meanwhile bring up Bill Russell and they have excuses for rings all of a sudden.
He is the best PG of all time. It isn't close either.
I remember watching Stockton play in the day. With the ball or on D, he always made the correct decision when he was in the right spot. And he was always in the right spot.

Greatest PG of all-time. Also, an Ironman. He only missed 14 games his entire career. His assist to TO ratio is the best too.
Indeed, and he stayed with one team out of loyalty when he could have made more money going elsewhere. Plus in lieu of a bigger pay raise with the Jazz toward the end of his career, he asked his team to write into his contract he could do athletic things on his own time, so he could participate with his kids. That and be able to wear the shorter shorts rather than the baggy long ones the team had gone to. Thus he was not all about the money and ego many of the fools in the NBA are like today.

Johnny Stockton was so god like Johnny in Dirty Dancing. One of the all time greats! Thx for the Stockton Dunk too. Never thought that was possible.
If my memory serves me, he had NO agent either. The man negotiated his own contracts and never held out. Skilled man, with amazing parents, who raised the man.
Stock was/is my favorite NBA player ever. Oh and that dunk was at the Karl Malones basketball camp. I was there in person as a kid. It was like 1992 time frame in Bountiful, Utah. I loved seeing it again.

Brother, thank you. This was an amazing review over a man which in my opinion is the ideal point guard along with Magic, and I hated him. I'm a Knicks fan and I bleed blue, and the things I watched him do and even more so live was mind blowing. It's like he didn't know he was the smallest player on the court, just like A.I. This beautiful game would be on a whole different level if most players had John Stockton's grit, and heart for the game. Eternal respect for one of the Greatest to lace them up.

My 10 year old son who is just getting into hoops asked me recently who my favourite player of all time was... he asked if it was Jordan, KG, or even Iverson and i say, Nope.
I asked him to look at my shelf of figurines and what does he see. He was totally stumped when he saw the NBA Mcfarlane Basketball Series 2 - John Stockton figure which i had....
He asked me about it and i explained to him that i watched one NBA highlight clip when i was a teenager and such things were hard to come by, here in Singapore, back in the late 80s. I saw Mr. Stockton double teamed, trapped, falling out of bounds on the baseline and yet, he threaded a bounce pass along the base line to a Jazz team-mate who scored. It was at that point which i absolutely fell in love with basketball.
Mr. Stockton is my favourite player because of all the traits which you highlighted in this video - his intelligence, mental & physical toughness, team only mentality and endurance - the exact same things which i had told my son that day.

John Stockton all day! I grew up in Utah before the family moved my senior year (2001) to NY and watched all those good years of the best Jazz team to ever be assembled. Thank you coach Sloan (rip) and to the great Jazz nation.
My favorite pg of all time. All time leader in steals and assists and still people don't talk to him as one of the best pgs. If I ever have to make the team that imo would destroy everyone it would be Stockton, MJ, Hakeem and 2 good defensive team players that don't need the ball to much and can shoot when needed or when they are open.

I was best friends with John in grade school at St Aloysius school off Mission St in Spokane. We hung out a ton- had sleepovers- everything. We would be up at night until at least 11pm on the weekends and we would be playing hoops. He lived for it. Moved away after a few years out of the city... Met up with John at SCC when we played in Summer Leauge Basketball just before he left to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. He was so quick, strong and and blew past most defenders with ease. Strong as an Ox for his size.

In the 90’s, as a kid from Chicago-Michael Jordan was like a real life Superhero to me, and the Bulls seemed like the “team of avengers”…
But, Stockton+Malone were the ‘EndGame-Supervillains’ that made you really, _really_ nervous.
Yeah. Because Stockton and Malone never got a ring they are fading into history. But if people could see them play today, it would be intimidating. They'd say, these guys should not be underestimated.

45 yrs old grew up in slc big time Jazz fan I've seen a lot of Jazz games even more highlights from the good Ole days with Stockton and Malone but never seen Jhon dunking it so for that I say thank you
I remember a game in which Rasheed Wallace committed a really hard foul on Stockton. Jerry Sloan was so mad that he ran onto the court swearing(a lot of F words) and was ready to throw punches at Wallace. Rasheed had the most surprised look on his face. I think that Sloan was the perfect coach for Stockton. He was very protective of his star point guard.
All the footage I've seen of Stockton possibly getting into it with someone, Malone suddenly appears with the "you land one finger on my little buddy here and I'll rip your head off" look.
A couple of things. I think Stockton was a lot of fun to watch. Very creative. I also thought all the players (interviews) in this post were fabulous ball players. Stockton was very steady and very strong. Players like Stockton, Nash, Steph are a little like drugs or something. Once you see them, you cannot get enough. I have never taken drugs. But if anyone offers me an Allen Iverson, I'll probably accept.

This is my favorite old school NBA everything!!! I like that give you props for everyone that deserved it. When I was playing Magic / Isiah were so athletic & flashy. Mr. Stockton had solid #'s & wish I watched more when I played.
Ya gotta highlight Bobby Jones of the Philadelphia 76'ers. Talk about a defensive specialist! I patterned my game after him and did well in my playin' days because of it.
He's the only member of The Dream Team that could go out to any restaurant and not be accosted by autograph and selfies with fans. What has to be recognized is he was the captain. The floor geneal. On a team with a top 5 all time scorer in The Mailman. Even Karl knows who got him more than half of those points. The greatest setup man in the history of the backcourt. Mr John Stockton.
Always hated Stockton. He wasn't on any of my teams, and he was ALWAYS a problem. Thanks for this tribute to him. One of the absolute best to ever play the game and I love when he gets props this video.

@@ktapreswreckd921v9 Agreed. I really think that Curry is in a class by himself. I don't necessarily mean that in terms of a GOAT debate, but more that he's not really a PG or SG. If pressed I would probably say that Isaiah is the third because of exactly that.
I'd put a lot of guys ahead of Steph. He's playing in the easiest era. Even Mark Price would be a better player in the Modern era.
I would put Stockton #2 or 3 among Point Guards in terms of overall success. However, in a vacuum, I'd say he was the #1 PG ever (even over Magic and Isiah) because despite Johnson being the better rebounder and Thomas being the better one-on-one scorer, Stockton was the best defender, most efficient/distance shooter, and dominant screen-setter while at least on par if not better than the others as a playmaker.
If Stockton were put on those Bad Boy Pistons or Showtime Lakers, he probably would have won 2-5 titles having so many more perennial All-Star players to pass to because all NBA Dynasties have had at least 3, if not 4, such star players (Dumars/Rodman/Laimbeer/Aguirre or Kareem/Worthy/Wilkes/Nixon/Cooper/McAdoo).
Furthermore, if Stockton were given the green light to shoot like Steve Nash, he would have been just as dominant as a score-and-pass PG as the 2-time MVP BUT WITH STRONG DEFENSE.
Isiah has said he felt Stockton should have been more scoring minded. Said "he could score the ball." Which he certainly could. But he just didn't seem to have that kind of mindset. He was truly a pass-first PG. But I think Isiah may have been right. It just wasn't his mindset.

I'd say that John Stockton is the 3rd best pg I've ever seen behind Magic and Isiah. And even though Jason Kidd, and Steve Nash were great in their own right, I gotta put Stockton a bit higher than them. But if it wasn't for injuries Penny Hardaway, woulda been one of the GOATS, period, and not just in the pg position!
Stockton is the best pg ever and no one else is even close. Magic was a better player, but as a PG, there's Stockton and then there's everyone else on a different page.

Stockton was so much of a G that he accomplished all he did without having ANY off hand dribbling ability. You knew he couldn't drive left, and he still got what he wanted on the floor.
Yet I don't get it when they say "he wasn't so fast". He was, very. Both fast and quick.
What I loved most about Stockton was his defense and toughness.
Hated Stockton as a Laker fan but gotta give him credit. Not a weakness in his game. Most underrated PG of all time. Deserves to be considered amongst the best at his position. Has the records to prove it

I hated John Stockton. I hated Karl Malone. I hated Jerry Sloan. Horny was fine. I just hated the Jazz as a Rockets fan from the 90s battles. I find it perfectly acceptable to talk about Malone because it's an off court thing, but with Stockton? As much as i hated him, i hate it even more how much he gets disrespected basically because he's a great white player. It's happening to all 80s and 90s players, but It happens to every white player x10. You're not allowed to be great and you get compared to someone far more athletic and showy and it makes no sense because you can do that at any position to any player-but jumping higher and dribbling cooler does not make you better. It's not street ball.
John Stockton earned the respect of everyone who faced him no matter what skin color just like Larry. Yes he was dirty, but Gil brings that up to discredit him in general with nothing good to say about his game and 80s and 90s players overall. You see it happen every generation, the hate was happening in Gils decade while Nash and Dirk were winning MVPs and you see it happening in this generation while Luka is dominating stat sheets and Jokic is dominating entire teams and winning MVPS and a ring. In 20-30 years they will trash this decade of bball because those slow white boys couldn't play in the 2050's!

Yeah, I grow tired of hearing guys say, white boy….little white boy, etc. it’s meant to be disrespectful it seems to me. They can’t seem to say great basketball player. As I grew up a Jazz fan, I hated the Rockets and especially Hakeem. There was no live for the Spurs either. Those were some real battles between all 3 teams. I would take any of those 3 teams in the mid 90’s against any of the teams today. Now I look back with respect towards the Rockets and Spurs of the 90’s and wish that quality of basketball was being played again. Hakeem and Robinson both get overlooked now as great centers. Stockton was the man too and I would take him over any point guard today.
My favorite player of all time. Growing up in SLC as a Jazz fan and watching him hit the WCF game winner over the Rockets with my Dad in our small basement was one of my favorite memories ever. His COVID stance is dumb AF but he’ll still be one of the top 3 PGs of all time. The Pasty Gangster!

What a lot of these younger kids don't know is that Stock could shoot the lights out, but he was a team player first & foremost, so we never really got to see him put on a shooting clinic except on rare occasions.
This guy knows how to make the right play EVERY time. No professional coaches or players underrate him, only amateurs do so.
I loved watching Stockton play, he is arguably the best pure point of all-time. Even though I wasn't a Jazz fan, him and Malone were my go to on NBA Jam.
There is one man i always believed would be an Excellent NBA Coach. I was a Bulls fan so the Jazz was the Team that scared me in the 90's. Stockton and Malone man...Two seriously in the Best Duo in NBA history. Stockton was a Master tactician. He really was a Floor General.

Great stuff as usual. A buddy of mine who's a basketball junkie that is younger than me and didn't see Stockton's full career has John in his starting five. I said not Magic? He said outside of height there wasn't much difference. I said what about exploiting his height? He said how many guys did you ever see just abuse Stockton? I could see his points. Anyhow his team was Jordan, Bird, Stockton, Kareem, and he wanted Olajuwon at the 4. He said I've got all the scoring I need. Stockton could care less if he scored 6 points. Plus, and you touched on this, he's best at protecting and stealing the ball. No flashy turnovers. I can't argue with that.
