Local on the 8s Somerville, NJ 8/2/06 Hottest Day in 50yrs

- Atrocious video quality, had to film in black and white to minimize interference from the TV, but here's a Local on the 8's from mid-morning on a very hot August '06 day. It was not quite 10 o'clock and it was already 91 degrees with a dewpoint in the mid 70s!!! Way too hot and sticky; looked more like a forecast for the Amazon rather than northwest NJ. I can't remember it being so hot in my almost 40 years.

Funny how this is starting to become more and more common now. I'll come back in 20 years and see if this is the "new normal"

I remember this. It reached 99 degrees just north of the Lehigh Valley. Heat index was at around 110.

That was a day that was actually painful to be outside. I work at a wildlife refuge and spent most of the day outdoors hosing down the poor animals stuck in the heat. I found myself turning the hose on myself on more than one occasion. During that day was the first and only time I've seen black bears and raccoons panting due to high temperatures!
whats interesting is that New York City uses Central Park as their overall temperature for the city. Becasue its away from the main city action, the high there only got to 98. But just outside the WABC-TV studio, the temperature was 105!!
I faintly remember hearing about that heat wave. We got a very small piece of it here in Michigan... where Lansing set its warmest low on record of 78. But I can't imagine how triple digit temps feel... since it has not hit 100 here in some 22 years.
Are you talking about Longmeadow, Mass? My dad's originally from Northampton (actually Florence, Mass). I remember visiting up there some summers ago and it was oppressively hot. The Connecticut River valley does concentrate the heat! Massachusetts heat waves can put NJ heat waves to shame.
I remember this heat wave. I spent the summer at a summer camp, and remember they cancelled all activities for a three day stretch, and allowed us to spend the days doing water activities, because of the excessive heat. I live in southeast MA, and the temperature hit 101F on all three of those days (Aug. 1-3), and the dew points were probably about 75F. Temperatures at night barely dropped below 80, and it was still extremely humid. By far the hottest days I've ever experienced as well.
I was in Metuchen that same year and is this the year that lot8s changed the map for today and tonight's forecast from a long island map to central nj map?
I remember this. I live near Philadelphia and a lot of areas approached 100 degrees. It got so hot that they had to turn off the power for a short time to conserve energy.

Is it usually humid over there? Because I don't recall deserts to have high humidity. And if there's more humidity, you sweat more.

Here in the Pacific Northwest we've been having a historical heat wave for the past 2 weeks our highs has been over 100 nonstop with half of them exceeding 105 the weather channel at one point forecasted 111° for my area
2006 was one of the best years ever in my life! And 2006 was a very hot year, one day on January 2006, the high reached around 65 degrees here in NYC! And January 2007, the high was 74 degrees, the average high at that time was around 35!!! :0
Newark, NJ was supposed to tie their all-time record high that day, 105F. It failed to reach it. This past summer, during the July Heat Wave of 2011, they shattered the record setting a new all-time record high of 108F.

well he lives in a cooler climate than you do take me for an example ive been taking weather records since 2008 and the coldest was -8 and the hottest was 112 but the humidity was 25-30%
Stepping out of air conditioning, it felt like a blast furnace outside! I work at a wildlife refuge and we were hosing down the outside animals and dropping blocks of ice in their water tubs to keep them from overheating.
the lows in yakima range from 50-70
but highs of 100-110

The lows here in NYC only range from 83-89! The highs were from 100-105!
when it gets hotter than that in my hometown its only a dumb heat advisory

Wow, I would think that if it was already 91 at 10 AM that it would for sure get to 100. Your almanac in the clip says that the record was 105. Did it get cloudy?
i live in the northwest and ive been dealing with a heat advisory for 9 days in a row temps ranging from 100 to 110

newark 105!! wow that was when we used to have temps in the 100's not anymore 1. i haven't seen a temperature in the 100's in like literally 3 years, also i haven't seen a snow fall of atleast 1 foot either in 3 years, weird. winters are have been getting colder though. the cooldest temp i saw in my town was last year.
@socool775 TWC predicted 104 but it "only" got up to 96, not sure if that was a record or not but it was more than hot enough for me! Actually it made it to 97 the next day while TWC predicted 99. We had a wicked thunderstorm on that Thursday which dropped the temp about 25 degrees (97 to 72). Felt fantastic!

@supergreatcornholio We're going through a bad heat wave as I type this; it's almost 11 at night and it's still 90 degrees! Temps have been averaging in the high 90s and low 100s since Monday.
Not good, that means 105+ temps in the summer here in Arkansas. lol
i live in yakima and on july 23,2006 my thermometer said 101 by 8:30am i got up at 5 that morning the temperature was 84

@socool775 It was brutal back in '06. This summer has been really hot as well. It got up to 98 degrees in my back yard during a couple of afternoons in June!

right you are but it is funny how when i read the records of all time hot temperatures on the weather channel it did not mention that newark record the record of 108 degrees on july 22, 2011 which gets me upset because they are not acknowledging history in the making if you check the weather channel it still has the old record of 101 degreees on july 22, 2011
