  • (8-11-19) You might remember I made a video about this awesome Miller freight elevator about a year ago. Recently, I was able to come back to have another look at it! This is a unique machine, so I took this opportunity to explain in more detail how one of these "pull the rope" elevators actually work. I hope you enjoy this explanation and learn something from it!

Interesting that the belt is physically shifted between different drums. I had a Lego excavator that had a similar setup, but with a switchable gear instead of a drive belt (essentially doing the same as shown). Almost like the elevator has its own transmission, controlled by the rope that’s pulled.
Very informative and well done! As an Engineering Student, I personally enjoy this style of video. 😎

Nice, Jason! I have seen one of these pull-the-rope elevators in person before, and it's in my hometown!

Awesome video and great explanation! Marshall Elevator in Pittsburgh used to have a machine shop in their basement with lathes, drills, etc. powered in the same manner. Sadly, the company is no longer in business and all of that equipment is gone :(

Is there a phase reserving relay between the station up/down call buttons and the hoist motor? I heard the mention of the twisted belt when direction changed as to the cams the belts ride/slide on.

All the buttons do is turn on/off the motor. I’m not so sure about a relay.

Have you ever seen a steam powered elevator?
