Good video. I worked with Airbag and Seat belt and Seating systems years ago. I didn't notice anything wrong with your presentation. Additional things you could have mentioned are: seat belt pretensioners that deploy before the airbag to make sure the seat belt is correctly tensioned, and that the passenger seat sensor determines whether to deploy the passenger airbags (specifically). A good idea is to link to your seat belt video at the end because TH-cam's algorithm might not.

I also work a lot and airbag system and I love all the details and work that was put in this video.. btw the gyroscope / yaw rate sensor I notice is actually built in a lot of airbag ecu.. I had soo many shops and customer that pop all the airbag just by touching the airbag unit with ignition on and pop all the curtain bag because they car think its about to roll over..thanks to the gyroscope sensor in them..some times they use impact gun to take the airbag unit out and pop goes the bag (cause by the vibration from the tool)..some cases they disconnect battery and went and touch airbag unit and the static from their body surge though the airbag unit and pop goes them hahaa... I seen too many cases
Could you tell me, then, how the front passenger airbag deploys?? On my car, there is no "door" or anything for it. The whole top of the dash must blow off?? With the driver airbag, the steering wheel cover just has to break free.
@@drpoundsign What vehicle and trim level do you have? If someone has access to A2MAC1 they would be able to see what the exact construction is. There probably IS a door in the plastic substrate but the outer skin of the Instrument Panel hides it. The IP substrate construction might be what we call "Foam in Place". It is an injection molding 2-shot process where the hard plastic is injected first (it has the door), then the substrate is placed in another mold which tightly seals to it everywhere but the top "A-surface". Finally, the soft "skin" (which is just a more rubbery plastic) is injected to it. So that's why you don't see it anymore. I am just guessing since I do not have the part in front of me.
This invention is literally a life saver. Kudos to the people who made this.
I am in favor of airbags, when you have your seatbelts on. As a retired firefighter I've seen them save lives many times. However I will never forget the Thanksgiving two cars just bumped corners (not even enough to destroy the lights) and the passenger airbag deployed. There was an unrestrained 5 year old girl in the seat who had bent over to pick up a toy in the floor board. She was hit full force, inches away and died instantly. Probably the single most horrific thing I have witnessed. Airbags are great when used properly, please make sure everyone has on their seatbelts!

They should tell that airbags can kill you (in the tv), instead of making the car beep for 10 minutes if you don't put on the seatbelt.
Isn't it illegal for children to be on the front seat unless you disengage the airbag exactly because they are lethal?

right? I saw one of their videos where they suggested becoming a patreon at the end. I got ready for the usual 10 minutes of explanation of why it is a good idea but by the time I finished rolling my eyes they were already done. As in they said "consider becoming a patreon" and that was that. Had mixed feelings about it (very happy but felt somewhat betrayed in my expectations).
@@wisteria3032 It's largely okay to have that at the end. The creator is positive that viewer will watch till end. Compare it with 2 mins of beginning drama asking to subscribe, bell icon, and then Intro sound with unwanted animations and then the presenter will still say Hey/hi I'm going to present this and that ... By that time THIS kind of awesome video is already halfway through the most interesting part. And those self advertiser would eventually present nothing concrete.
@@vvajay Yeah - I agree with you. I'm saying even when someone puts it at the end it's usually a very detailed and long request whereas this one was maybe a phrase and that was it. I was like "wait, where's the rest of it?". It was quite a pleasant surprise but it left me a bit dumbfounded.

My mom had an accident a few years ago with a Hyundai (5 seats) car.
The airbag didn't open even if it was armed but compared to a normal accident she was hit in the back-side of the car by another car at around 75 km/h while she was taking a right corner (so she had relatively very slow speed herself making the impact force IMENSE.
She got a head injury but was better in a few weeks.
The reason for the airbag failure might be due to the car being hit in the back not in the front where most sensors are.

Nah. Mine got hit in the front and after the vehicle "came to rest", I watched both airbags deploy: driver side blue, passenger side white. Sometimes they just don't work.

I was in a car crash with my mom (nothing severe) and I was about 6 or so at the time but I still vividly remember the smell of the airbags. I am 21 years old now.
What did they smell like?
This brought back memories of my first job in the automation industry back in the 80s. I worked at a company, Advance Automation Systems Corporation, in Simi Valley, where we made three automated production machines for AT&T, so that they could produce the magnetic ball switch for these systems.
The assembly went through a final continuity (Ohms) test for the contacts and the magnetic field (Gauss) was verified as well.
I work at an airbag factory in germany where we manufacture the generators. The quality control that every small element goes through is simply astonishing.

My car's takata airbag was just replaced in a recall this year. I recall a documentary where people said Takata airbags that failed QA would be put into cars. That documentary also said that the chemical was never changed - they just added something to absorb moisture, but that eventually when its absorbed as much as it can, you have unstable detonation again.
The Great lengths people go to help humanity is simply amazing.
speaking of potholes, I used to be scared of airbags deploying just because of potholes. and eventually, just in 2019, I ran into a very deep pothole one night and thankfully the airbag didn't deploy. the dashcam came off from the windshield though and I bit my tongue lol. at least now I have peace of mind that airbags don't usually deploy just because of deep potholes 😄

All along I thought that compressed air was used to inflate the airbags. After all, air bags are not inflated by air! Very instructive video. One must salute the diligence and creativity of the engineers who designed the product.

Once an airbag exploded in my face, i was copilot and i the crash caught me off guard, i was slightly leaning forward and the airbag slapped my face. It was like a hand slaping my face at 320km/h.
I worked for and personally knew Allen K. Breed. He was a remarkable man, a literal genius.

Me and my mom were in a crash on Aug. 13, 2021. We were ni a 2008 Cadillac CTS. We called it the "Black car". We were headed down street not even a quarter mile from home. A drunk driver hit us on the side at 80. The airbags were powerful enough to make me and my mom go deaf for a short time. If it was any closer to any of the doors we would have flipped over.
Thankfully I've only ever been in one crash where airbags deployed. In July 2016, I worked back to back 12h shifts at my job without sleeping a wink in-between, and I fell asleep at the wheel of my 2003 Chevy Cavalier in heavy traffic on the interstate on my way home, and just plowed into the back of the car in front of me at 25-30 mph. I was going slowly enough that I didn't even hit the airbag with my body or head, the only "injury" I sustained was scrape-like rashes on the side of both hands, where the airbag had rubbed over them as it deployed.

I think the bigger question is, why is this woman repeatedly driving into boulders in the middle of the road? And why are there boulders on the road in the first place?

Only 2 small nitpicks: in the beginning of the video the wheels turn left before the crash and the steering wheel hasn't turned left.
And near 5:33 the character model seems to get into a crash animation and returning to default position before the crash. And then during the actual crash the character model is static and shows no animation.
I know, I k know.. It's nitpicking and the those small things doesn't take away from the information.

They are called SRS and this should be spelled out: Supplementary Restraint System! So it is in ADDITION to the seat belt. But some cars have belt pre-tensioners. If you have up to 9 bags popping you want to remain in the seat as tight as you can.

Normally I release the belt just roubd the corner before coming home.on this day I didn't release the belt .luckily the airbag worked just round the corner.

nutshell from me who experienced airbag deploy/car crash: u dont feel anything except huge BOOM, smoke, sulfur smell and weird loud noise. (i got the bad position at the front and my doors were a broken a bit so remember, if u are in a crash then get out of the car at any chance because if you won't then sometimes it can be your last car drive because something can mess up and uh, ya know, car would get on fire or someting bad so it's better to not risk. also if your doors are slammed then kick them because you can buy new car but you can't buy new life)

I was in one severe accident when my front airbag deployed in a Mazda3. I walked away without a scratch or anything. It is important to have the correct distance, arms length to your wrist, distance to stay safe. It works! Surprisingly, my glasses were still intact! Everyone drive carefully and stay safe!

There was an incident in which a family didn't know about the seat belt's need for the activation of airbags, and sadly they died from the crash, there family registered a complaint against the car company thinking it was a manufacturing error, and they never reached anywhere as the necessity of seat belt was common for every model and is explained in the manuals.
They bought the car for the exact reason of airbags yet it never helped them in time of need, because of lack of intel and taking safety measures too lightly.
The point is, if you dont follow the guidelines for safety, non other will be responsible for your damage and you will have to suffer it painfully...
Its like owning a fire extinguisher without knowing how to use it.

Great video but you've actually got a few things wrong in this one!
The Takata recall was due to them using Ammonium Nitrate NOT Sodium Azide as they swapped to a cheaper material while most Inflator Manufacturers were trying to distance themselves from Sodium Azide due to its toxicity. It is Ammonium Nitrate's sensitivity to temperature changes and moisture that caused Takata inflators to rupture which is also why ruptures are more common in more humid areas.
100% agree. Sodium Azide was the original chemical used in airbags. Takata then changed to Ammonium Nitrate (aka PSAN). It is the Ammonium Nitrate versions that can rupture and have had a global recall now reaching 100 million airbags.
Most airbag manufacturers now use Guanidine Nitrate in the inflator.
Other than that, great video. Just need to redo the audio with correct terms and it would be perfect.

Amazing how technology has evolved
i gotta tell you this story...
Today i was driving back to school with my friend,
i was a lil bit heavy with the pedal and after a powerfoul start my car (Lancia Y 2013) drifted, reaching around 30 km/h, until i faced a wall,
Obvsiusly i pushed as hard as possible on the brake, and i think i crashed into the wall around 20/15 km/h,
unluckly the airbags opened and we were shocked because it happened so fast and we were going so slow.
After realising what i did (and nearly soffocated by the bad smell of the airbags) i got off the car and checked the damage done... BELIEVE ME... Just a moved front bumper and a cracked light.
THE GOOD(or Worst) Part of the story is that under my leg i found a Plastic Heart (i assume was a part of a Bracelet) around 1 cm in height and width, which almost surely has to be hidden under the plastic of my steering wheel and THIS HEART LEFT ME 2 DOTS IN MY FORHEAD after the Airbag hitted my face....
Neither me and my sister (who was the previus owner of the car) know where this heart comes from.
Obviusly the most painful hit i received today... is on the WALLET

It's still mortal though depending on the speed of the vehicle, a man recently died in an accident in my place last December cuz the airbag pressure on his face was high even though he had his sit belt put on ,he face was partially damaged and he died instantly, so folks who overspeed , air bags are good but doesn't guarantee 💯 security, Don't drive too fast

I've been in one accident I cab remember where the airbags went off. The exhaust gas irritated my throat for days after. I didn't actually witness the airbag deploy because I blacked out before I hit the car in front of me

2 days ago was a super sad and scary day, I was involved in a car crash in my 1990 Lexus, a Nissan Pathfinder hit me while I was turning left, all I can say, you never want to get into a crash, the airbag is so loud and powerful, you dont know what happened after your hearing and vision comes back after 5 seconds, your vision becomes white, your hearing starts ringing, and you become super bruised and sore all over your body, your face swells up and releases juices and you feel burned, impact is so bad, it knocked my dses off all the way to the rear window of my car, powder from the airbag is everywhere all over in your car.
Question about which Chemical is used in Air bags was used in Neet PG post graduation Medical entrance exam in India. 5 years ago.
Even Internet had no proper answer for that at that time.

That's definitely a technology we already have and can make, but it's still in a developmental stage. The real problem is replacing every car on the road with cars that have this technology.

I had a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina before Nov 2021, I had put 1000 bucks on this rusty old green can and it worked good, I had slipstreamed into a tree, hitting all on my side, luckily the car and it's safety options saved my life that night, seatbelt on caught me, the airbag went off and I was left with a minor concussion, hip fracture on my left and right arm fracture. I'm walking tall after 7 months with little to no trouble, my arm is still stiff ATM but it has opened up in motion and flexibility. That car, more specific it's airbags, helped limit the odds against disability.
