📼Video Summary:
Krispy Kreme is famous for its donut machine. You can watch the machine from behind a glass wall inside the store. The first Krispy Kreme store was in 1937. In the 1950s they used the Krispy Automatic Ring-King Junior to make the donuts. The machine today is a lot bigger and can churn out over 3000 donuts per hour! The machine has several main parts: mixer, extruder, proofer, fryer, glaze waterfall, retail curve, and cooling tunnel. The machine can be modified to make different types of donuts; some of them are dipped by hand into colored icing. Experienced workers need to monitor the machine at each step of the way. Just in case, they also have the emergency stop button.

For those that use Blender (3d software) - there are a couple of hidden surprises in this video. Did you find them?😁
Hello!! 👋
there’s a blender logo shaped donut at 1:21
Can you show how to look at someone's blender @JaredOwen ?
Blender logo donut 🍩😂❤️❤️
Maybe also the employee of the month 😂
The animator: finally that donut blender tutorial we all watch at the beginning comes to good use.
Oh yea...however, these donuts were made a little different from the way Andrew price made them
Yes i serach for days now
@@JaredOwenhow did you make these donuts?
I making donut with my hand without machine but it not like donuts
Haha
1:21 haha nice easter Egg there. Blender Logo as a Donut. Classic
I couldn't resist putting that in there😂
I was about to ask how the Blender Logo donuts are made 😄
@@georgewilliams6498 lolwutdbeicksalanswwkskoughggdjwmsaugghaaaaghfdkeksjsgoohdjfjs oof
If Krispy Kreme have those donuts, Ill instantly buy it
4:12 I had no idea that they contributed to Blender itself:
“Contribution Process
If you have found an area in Blender you want to improve on and it's a non-trivial change, check in advance if Blender developers agree with the project and design.
This helps avoid doing work for nothing, in case the feature should have a different design, is already under development, or is not desired functionality.
The chat and forums are good places to get feedback about this. To talk to the individual owners of the relevant code, see the list of modules and their owners.
Once you have written the code, see the contributing code section on how to make a pull request get it submitted, reviewed and included.”
2:42 "this tiny machine could churn out 720 donuts per hour." That's 12 donuts a minute, which is a donut every 5 seconds, and when you watch the animation, one donut comes out every five seconds. The attention to detail is crazy!
It took me a few moments to realise but you are right
You know what's interesting - we looked at the reference video and mostly just "eyeballed it" - so I'm glad this came out correct! Thanks for your kind words
@@JaredOwen Don't say that. You should have just said: "Well noticed, it was exactly my intention." You are a TH-camr, so you are not supposed to have integrity.

This is just so they don't have to pay employees 20$ an hour in California :( stores with a bakery are exempt from this rule
@@AbelPinalesdamn
@@AbelPinales That's crazy! Is that actually a rule?
@@AbelPinales Because that's what happens when states mandate big wage increases. The corporations get around it while the small businesses can't afford to pay their employees so they either cut their staff or go out of business.
i appreciate the glazing waterfall fluid simulation.
Probably my favorite part!

the glazing is crazy

Most Krispy stores have their machines set up so you can watch the whole process, start to finish. It's neat. Especially when you manage to buy the doughnut you watched being made, fresh off the belt.
It's really satisfying kind of like going to a Japanese Steakhouse and watching your food be made in front of you - it also helps immensely with wait times because you can see your food being made right in front of you!
The fire suppression system you showed looks like it's dumping water into hot oil??
4 It won't actually dump water. It'll dump fire extinguisher fluid most likely
@@emilyelizabethbuchanan998 I'm certain that in reality it's not water, I was commenting with the hope that Jared or someone else knew detailed about exact what it uses cause I was curious
Yeah water would make the fire worse. CO2 or some gas like Halon. I just read a report about an actual fire where this system was used, and it said it kept the fire "contained" until people got there (it was at night, somebody left the heating elements on).
Good question! This is NOT water and I should have made that more clear. Some sort of chemical mixture to put out the fire
I don't know exactly what chemical is used, and it varies per location, but it is usually a dry chemical which produces a ton of C02 when heated. The mechanism that triggers it is literally (usually) just 2 pieces of metal glued together with a heat-sensitive adhesive, then put under spring tension. Enough heat melts the glue, the spring pulls the wire and it dumps the dry chem on the fire.
Again I don't know for sure 100% this stuff, but I work in kitchen exhaust cleaning so I interact with this stuff every day.
I remember as a kid how excited my brothers and I would get when we pulled into Krispy Kreme and the Hot Donuts Now sign was on. To this day I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t agree when it comes to hot Krispy Kreme donuts off the line, they just melt in your mouth like nothing you’ve ever had before, it’s definitely a treat like no other.
I agree! I've definitely had a few donuts over the past few weeks

I hope those sprinklers dont contain water. As anyone who had chemistry in school knows, the resulting explosion of the oil bath would be great to watch only from considerable distance.
This is so well-made. Even the attention to small details, like donuts looking different before proofing, is there.
Thank you! I really like to dive deep into animations like this so both you and I can see the full scope of the machinery/structure used!
They ought to have this playing on a TV outside their donut machines.
Haha that would be the perfect advertising for them
Weirdly we have several locations in Minnesota 20 years ago. They were incredibly popular, the line at the Maple Grove location was long the months they first opened. Now all the stores are gone.
I remember waiting in that long line as a kid. Was kind of sad to see no dots appear here during the video. I was ready to do a mini road trip to get some hot krispy kremes.
Ooh! the Blender shaped donuts at "10:09"! Nice one!😀
Yup!
I loved the fast forward animation at 6:05 !!

So Krispy Kreme only make a fraction of the amount of donuts that new blender users make each year 😂
One of the things I love most about your videos, as soon as I think to myself “oh but what about that other thing?” you explain that part next. So brilliant.

I appreciate the level of detail in this animation, including the grill and glaze that collects on the rods. This presentation has me think about the many challenges that needed to be solved, as well as the need for trained people who make sure the process works and we get a plethora of varieties of doughnuts. Well done! You earned my subscription to your channel.
I love the idea of showing how global chain stores make their food! Many people don’t actually know how their fast food is actually made, I work at a In n Out and it would actually be a quite interesting video on how our food is prepared and the equipment we use in the store. Great work love your videos!
As a British person who has dined at In 'n' Out in the past, I have to say I'm very surprised that the chain hasn't expanded into the UK market yet. Make the burgers Halal and provide vegan burgers for the vegetarians, I think the business would prove _hugely_ popular here. 🍔💨👍
Of course; In the UK market, that _In 'n' Out_ logo would need a circle of yellow stars around that bend in the arrow... 🇬🇧💨🇪🇺😉
I've found an inaccuracy, the filled donuts never have even distribution on the inside lmao 10:40
Its a goooooooooood day when Mr Jared Owen uploaded a video
Thank you for watching!
The fact that Jared did the time lapse part during the proofer is awesome. Great video!
This is a very good demonstration through which the complete process of making a donut can be understood without visiting a bakery.
8:25 yum
7:58 don't worry, i got a guy
in 1962, my Boy Scout troop made a deal with KK in which they would send a truck to our location early Saturday morning with MANY dozens of fresh donuts which the Scouts would pick up and deliver door-to-door to customers they had taken orders from the night before. (After the first solicitation, customers said, "Standing order; just bring 'em.") A dozen donuts cost 50 cents. KK split the income with us 50/50. This Fall fund raiser sent MANY Scouts to week-long summer camp year after year. Thanks KK. You're the best ... and so are your donuts.
@JaredOwen 11:45 You cannot put out oil fires with water. That will cause the oil level to rise and spill over, causing the rest of the kitchen to be on fire. Instead, they use a chemical foam that cuts off the oxygen supply to the fire, effectively smothering it. For oil fires, a Class K fire extinguisher (United States) or a Class F extinguisher (Europe) is designed specifically for cooking oils and fats. Another thing that they use is a fire blanket. A fire blanket works by smothering the fire, cutting off the oxygen supply that the fire needs to continue burning.

Bro took the doughnut tutorial to a whole new level
I didn't have a Krispy creme in my town very long, but I loved to watch them get made as a kid, I'd always get them to take a donut off the line before it was glazed

“Krispy Kreme is making new donuts.” -Ralsei I think
I'm genuinely impressed by the level of precision and efficiency of Krispy Kreme's donut machine! From mixing the ingredients to frying and cooling, every step seems to be perfectly orchestrated. It's no wonder they can produce thousands of donuts per hour. This video was both informative and mesmerizing
Thanks for watching!
1:02 This is the exact floor plan and layout of the factory store in Daly City, California.
If I'm there when the machine is in operation. I ask for a fresh donut before it gets glazed.
Jared, thank you for these amazing videos. But, most of all, thank you for your simple voc & clear speech..!
I’m not sure why I find these videos so fascinating, since I’m not mechanically minded and never thought I was all that interested in how things work. But somehow the excellent animations and clear explanations keep me watching to the end, and I always learn something. I hope you do videos someday on electric fans, air conditioners, refrigerators… and many other topics!
Ive seen this machine in action many times. I used to do electrical service calls at a krispy kreme in the 90s, really neat
The fact that all the doughnuts are pushed up by the wave from the next set of doughnuts landing in the pool is an attention to detail that I have never seen anywhere outside of real life itself.
HOLY CANOLI
I used to work in a place that made donuts like this on a much larger scale, and I must say this video is spot on, great job!
I work in industrial automation. Ive never seen machine animation of this quality. This makes me want to step up my documentation game.
Seeing the conveyer belt when I was a kid, that was the best part of going to one of their stores. Seeing the whole process animated is awesome to see!
Bro this is literally my childhood. I remember going to my local Kristy Kreme and watching the donuts get made. I could’ve stood there for hours watching each and every one go down the conveyor belt and going through the different stages of being made.
I spent a summer working in a small local donut 40+ years ago. The first time I walked into a Krispy Kreme I was as fascinated as my kids. I showed them all the steps of the process and told them how it was all done by hand in a small shop. Of course I also told them how I met their mother that summer over the counter of that shop.
I watched this video last week and I’ve been craving donuts ever since. Finally gave in and stopped in on my way to work. You definitely just helped Krispy Kreme sell some donuts 😅
This brought back some memories. Used to go down to the local Krispy Kreme and watch the machine through the glass while we waited to get our order. Used to pick one donut and watch it through it's entire process.
I've watching from behind glass for a long time as well - it's like the machine was begging to have an animation done about it! Thanks for your comment
this is one of those videos where I didn't ask for but never knew I needed, this was such an interesting video!
OMG, after visiting a KK, I once commented that blender guru should make a donut factory tutorial. Now you’ve made a video. That’s awesome, great work. I hope someday someone makes this a tutorial & adds dozens of donuts made by blender guru donut tutorial people.
The first donut machine illustrated is for Cake donuts and Cruellers. Neither require yeast or proofing and are dropped directly in the oil. (source: My family owned a Dunkin' Donuts for 10 years, and I was a baker during the summer break for many of those years) Bonus fact. The glaze for Dunkin Donuts is 50lbs 10X Sugar, 5 qts of Hot water, and a couple of cups of HF Corn Syrup (for the shine). Another fun fact is that 40 years ago, Dunkin' Donuts used to HAND CUT their cake donuts rather than use a machine; this created a much more symmetrical and nicer looking donut than you will see today with the machine dropped caked. Rolling and hand-cut a cake donut takes experience, a perfectly mixed dough, and proper use of flour. These days, speed and ease of use mean that they drop them out of a machine
this man animated that many donut meanwhile me struggling that to animate one donut in blender 👏👏
We all start somewhere don't worry i've been doing this for years and this video also took quite a long time to make! keep working on your craft!

you’re such a talented animator. i love watching your videos and learning how things work.
I love how in this chanel you can never guess what the next video is gonna be about!
Do you plan eventually to make a video about boring machines (like the ones that dug the Channel tunnel)?
Potentially! I mostly focus on the machines and structures I'm curious about at the moment and if I can't find enough information about them on the internet, I just make them myself!
At the Krispy Kreme near me (my las visit was before the pandemic) the people working only handled donuts using sticks, not their hands. To sell donuts from the display case they would use hands and wax paper, but on the donut machine - sticks.
This was and still is my favorite donut shop ever
Of all the "How It Works?" animations you did, I never expected you to make one about food like Krispy Kreme and now I'm craving for some 🤣
I've never seen anyone else take it apart so I wanted to see for myself honestly haha
hey jared been watching your videos for awhile i love seeing how things work keep up the good work 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! I appreciate all the support
The original Krispy Kreme factory was located in Old Salem, which was originally Salem, NC before Winston and Salem merged. Since Old Salem is now a historical district and what was there in even older times was gardens, the factory building is no longer there. There is a plaque though for the factory, and my mother remembers when the factory was there. My memories are of the Stratford Road location, where we would watch the donuts on parade.
The Stratford Road location opened when I was in high school. They were open quite late for the era; we could go after football games for coffee and doughnuts.
Edit: I believe the third location was Battleground Avenue in Greensboro. It was there when I was in college in the ‘60’s.
I remember my favorite part of the original Krispy Kreme was the glaze, how warm the dough was and that blacks had to enjoy it in the parking lot.
@@alejandronopasanada5302 How could I forget segregation ! The Greensboro location was integrated when I was in college in the late ‘60’s. The “sit-ins” had already happened and lots of businesses responded sympathetically.
@@phil2u48 WAS IT REALLY? I was joking and thought it may not translate. I own a house there now and I’m younger. Was it really like what I said?
@@alejandronopasanada5302 I don’t remember KK per se, as the first location (in Salem) was only take-away service anyway. BUT..! I do remember separate bathrooms in department stores, Black people were not allowed to eat at lunch counters (Woolworth, Kress), and they could not enter most restaurants. Drive-in diners usually had “colored only” parking sections. Movie theaters had “colored” entrance to the balcony section.
Homemade glaze is usually just milk, icing sugar and vanilla. There’s probably some variation in the KK version to make it set faster and maybe last longer, though.
You must've watched many Blender Guru tutorials to make that many donuts
This might be my favorite video you’ve made so far, it was so cool just seeing how the whole process works, keep grinding!
Thank you and absolutely! I also really enjoyed learning about the machines myself while creating this video
This is one of the best videos I have seen in a long time. You did an amazing job! I love Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and have wondered how they are made. Even though I've seen their machine in operation, I was not able to see behind the proofer and always wondered how the batter was poured.

Of course! I'm glad you enjoy my content!
Your animations have really improved over the years I have watching your videos.
It's a donut enrober! The krispy kreme store in my area used to have lines out of the door and drive thru, but it closed many years ago now. I'm always surprised that people are still obsessed with them because they didn't last here.
Never thought Jared would be teaching us glazing
haven't watched you for a while... now I came back with this new animation and it is great!
I'm just impressed by the cg glaze waterfall lol, love your content!
My mom used to work at Krispry Kreme, she worked at one that made doughnuts and two that didn’t at the same time, and she would migrate between the three
Considering it is a grease fire, I doubt they use water sprinklers. Sure, there are mist sprinkler that do a decent job of putting out small grease and oil fires from e.g. a spill,. but a tub of burning grease, not likely.
Krispy Kreme should pay you for this, because now I really want to go eat a doughnut
Haha that'd be really cool if they sponsored me... Krispy Kreme you listening?
Thanks for the video Jared! Gave me something to watch while snacking. Now I want donuts!
This one was so fun. Memories of being a kid and having my face pressed against the glass as I watched the donut machine do its thing.
You can eat the stalk if you peel it and slice it, plus the keaves are edible too and taste like dark green cabbage.
Please keep up the excellent quality render, videos and explanations ❤ Love to learn lots of new stuff!
Absolutely will! Thank you Jocho!
When you see the different language voiceovers you know the video is made with heart.
i can do all of this with a rolling pin, pastry cutter set, chiefs knife and a stainless steel bowl also a lot of wax paper. the only hard part of homemade donuts is proofing them so set the oven at the lowest temp then crack the door for about 10 minutes and check the wall temp and make sure its no higher then 105 deg then put a liter of boiling water in a bowl on the bottom rack of the oven. when you proof the donuts do it on individual squares of wax paper so they rise and you just throw the proofed donuts into the oil and immediately the extract the paper, it wont melt because the temp is 350-360 degrees. you dont need a machine but automation is a wonderful thing.
Machines like this will be the answer to $20 an hour minimum wage in California. You don't make a humanoid robot to work on equipment designed for humans, you remove the human element all together. This is what will be coming to fast food chains like Mcdonald's to make fries and burgers. They already have automated drink machines that put in ice, and fill the drinks per the computer kiosk that took the order, then they go out on a conveyor belt. All the human does it hand it to the customer, and soon that won't be necessary. It will replace 10 workers at $20 and hour, All that is needed is a manager and a tech. The store saves $2400 a day in labor, and the machine never asks for days off or calls in sick, no workmans comp.
