      WSario own a f150 I’d go F250 or 350 if doing it again. Even with 1750 payload it fills fast with a travel trailer, dog, kids, pedal bikes, kayaks. 350 maybe because you can’t find many gas trucks in co and I want more payload if I’d have to go diesel.

      If finances allow I'd go f250. Personally I found that it doesn't take much travel trailer and gear to get close to a 150/1500 payload restrictions.

      I have towed with all makes, models and different size engines, when it comes to towing with a gas engine you can't beat a large cubic inch engine, I once had a EcoBoost and loved it but when towing it was always making boost to pull the load and seemed stressed, went with a 6.2 Ford Superduty pulling the same loads and the engine is much more happier, that's my 2 cents

      @darrentemple428 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gregc9220 I disagree with this statement. It almost sounds like you are comparing a Superduty (F250 or greater to a F150). The weight difference alone will make the larger model feel more stable. Also you didn't state which Ecoboost model you are directly comparing, there's multiple. The 3.L is the largest Ecoboost engine. I owned a few 3.5 L Ecoboost's and a 6.2L, all F150's. 12, 14, 16, and 17. The smaller Ecoboost's suck compared to 3.5 IME. I towed alot of miles on all. Moved most of our stuff multiple trip's by a 8x10 single axle enclosed trailer 800 miles one way. The 6.2 downshifted way more, it's powerband is closer to 5000 RPM, the 3.5 L is at 2250 RPM. While the 3.5L Eco mileage just sucked towing, especially compared in drop to 6.2, but not towing 3.5 mileage much better. Hands down the 3.5L was much better to tow with, more power readily available and less downshifting and less engine noise due to it running at a lower RPM. The 3.5 L behaves more like a diesel, lots of low end torque. Granted tbe boost is increasing engine pressures, but the lower RPM scream was much better to me as was hearing the engine noise. Then later pair that 3.5 to the 10 speed and it was really nice. Granted the 6.2 was a 6 speed and all other 3.5's were 6 speeds. There's also gear ratio's that'll make a difference. Mine were all 3.73's and 4.10's.
      If I had a choice I'd take a 3.5L over a 6.2L any day in a F150. I tow fairly often probably every few weeks and not overly heavy loads. Even when I towed heavier loads, 3.5 was better. Same trailer, same speed same loading on 6 spds, same hill, 3.5 Eco might downshift to 5th, typically wouldn't unless wind. 6.2 downshifted commonly to 4th and sometimes 3rd.

    This truck will pull that trailer everyday with no issues in comfort at a cost of 2mpg. While the Jeep can pull that every weekend but if tasked to pull all the time the life expectancy of the engine or transmission will be reduced

  • @BIG570S
    @BIG570S 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The 7.3 truck gets worse mpg (than the Jeep towing) on that loop without any load...That’s not the point of the heavy duty truck to get great mpg. The point is that super duty doesn’t know that trailer is there and that Jeep looked like it was about to break the rear axle and throw a rod out of the block towing the same trailer.

    I’ve been pulling a forest river hyper lite 29hfs for about 4 years now with a 2010 F150 with a 5.4l engine and 3.55 gears it was also a heavy half ton with the better suspension. One of the last stout F150s made. The trailer is a 2017 and weighs roughly 6800 lbs dry. Payload capacity is just about 2600 lbs and an gvwr of 9900lbs. Oh, did I mention it’s a toy hauler. So you can load about 2000 lbs behind the axles. They are different than other trailers when hauling. The weight distribution is set up to haul a toy. When it’s empty in back, they can get squirrely to say the least.
    The F150 pulled it well, but wind would may it feel like you’re going backwards. Side winds absolutely made for a white knuckle ride. I would avoid 20 mph side winds like the plague, when I could.
    2020- enter Godzilla!! What a major improvement a real truck will make. Zilla not only pulls this trailer, it’s like it’s not back there. If I didn’t look at my mileage I may not know it’s there. Pulls great, all the sway from passing vehicles is gone,mostly, and takes a good side wind like a champ. Nose into a stiff wind and Drop a gear or two and keep going. Absolutely love the 10 speed. It’s flawless. Ford has a winner in this rig, and not all the maintenance, noise, smell, and other expense of a diesel. Oh by the way, huge fan of Diesel engines when needed. The 7.3l proves they are not. I love it!
    My two cents worth.

    thanks -- I knew the Godzilla was coming but I got the 2019 F250 with the 6.2. Yes it came with the 6 speed transmission and I knew the 2020 would have the 10 speed transmission. Two points. 1. The 6 speed transmission is tried and true whereas I had done some research and the 10 speed transmission which as is the F150s and Chevys were having issues and were not being recalled. So I went with the tried and true. My 6.2 gives me about 15 MPG with a load on the highway and about 13 in the city. I actually get better gas mileage, along with the capabilities, than a full size toyota tundra and nissan titan of which both have lesser payload and towing capabilities. I figured that there would be an additional cost for the Godzilla engine back in 2019 when I was getting my 2019 F250. Thanks again for showing the details.

(Unless it was a couple dirt bikes, or a couple of quads) I think it’s a great off road platform, with a lot of aftermarket support, but don’t think it’s the greatest choice if you are going to tow a lot. Interesting fact: the idea of 3/4 ton being a 7000lb goliath is a result of 'gaming the system' of CAFE standards. "3/4 tons" used to range from like 6500 to 8000lbs GVWR - that means curb weight PLUS payload. It was the the "1 ton" that was at the 8500lb rating. In fact the original 1975 CAFE law only ran up to 6000lbs GVWR, which was once where 3/4 tons started. Then you had the mid '70's "F150" and Chevy "Big 10" and "D 150" placed above the F100 , C10 and D100, where they had 3/4 ton range payloads of 6001+ GVWR. When CAFE first came in for trucks, the only ratings were on the lightest models, and they didn't even rate 4x4s at all. Around 1980 the Govt began rating 4x4 half tons and 3/4 tons below 8500lbs gvwr. So that's when you saw the "C6P" Chevy HD 3/4 ton emphasized (they still had a lighter 3/4 ton for a while that was CAFE rated, but you couldn't get the 454 engine). As we know now, eventually all 3/4 tons simply became "HD" or 8501 GVWR and above. This GMC brochure from '78 shows all 3/4 tons below 8500lbs GVWR. www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/gmc/78gmcn/bilder/13.jpg

    Thanks Andre. While I wait trying to decide what to order, one of the options is the F250 Tremor. The camper I pull is only about 3500 lbs, so the F250, F150, and Ram Rebel are all way more than I need. But there is one other aspect to consider is the payload capacity. When camping for weeks at a time I put quite a bit of stuff in the bed including generators, lawn chairs, etc. Again not a problem for any of the vehicles I mentioned, however it does push the limits on my Chevy Colorado ZR2. This did answer one question on mileage when towing, and it sounds like I'll be a lot better off with the F150 or the Rebel, particularly the F150 with the 3.5L ecoboost. Hell my Chevy Colorado gets about 11-12 mpg towing.
    As much as I like the Tremor, this pretty much convinced me to scratch it off the list. The diesel while better at $8000 more than the 7.3L wouldn't pay for itself in savings over the life of the truck based on the mileage I expect to put on.
    So this video was really helpful, than you for doing it.

    The difference between the 250 and the Jeep is the f250 will tow that weight every day for 100k miles and still be running. Surely a gladiator will tow that weight but doing it every day will lessen the lifetime of the parts significantly. It has smaller axles, smaller u-joints, smaller transmission parts, etc.
    The problem now days seems to be that people want the f250 out of want and not out of need. Most people could get by with a f150 or gladiator, both of which are capable. For me I drive a utility bed f250 that is loaded with 1300 lbs of tools all the time, and towing 10k loads often. My truck easily passed 100k miles with just routine maintenance. A f150 or gladiator would be wore out by then.

    I really like the new Ford "Godzilla" truck except for two big things. 1) I MUCH prefer a manual transmission. And 2) I want a full eight foot box. For comparison, I drive a 1996 crew cab 4x4 big block 460 (bigger than the 7.3) with a ZF-5 manual trans. Both axels are equipped with manually actuated OX lockers. Trans case is manually actuated. Curb weight is 8,000 lbs. I can tow an 18,500 lb capable beaver tail trailer with no problems.

      Your 7.3l is totally different lol. It's a diesel unlike the new one that's a gas. They're literally not even close to being the same other than the displacement number.

      @wildbill23c 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not even close to the same engine...your 18 year old 7.3L V8 is a diesel. The current one is a gas engine, not even of the same design.

    Take this into account. The amount of strain on the engines thus cutting the engine life expectancies. Regardless of fuel economy. That 3.6 liters life gets cut in half.

      { Alexander } I’ve owned a 2013 wrangler with a 3.6l. Without towing, just putting a 4 inch lift and 35 inch tires, the engine went out on it’s own by 75k miles. I can’t imagine the stress 5k lbs is putting on that already undersized v6. They only use the v6 for gas mileage.

      Gus Redwood Precisely. Not saying that a lucky one won’t come around and tow with it and have it be the little engine that could and have it last 150k plus. But odds are against it.

    If You Want To Tow Between 2000 & 5000 LBS, You Should Go With The Mid-Size Truck Like The Ford Ranger EcoBoost, Chevrolet Colorado V6, Jeep Gladiator & Wrangler(SUV) EcoDiesel (That Diesel In Both Of Those Jeeps) & Toyota Tacoma V6 Instead Of The 1/2Tons,3/4 Tons & 1 Tons.

    I would pick the F250 all day every day. Pulling a trailer, with a load or empty it is just the better vehicle. The jeep is pretty nice but it is an enthusiast vehicle it is just a different beast altogether.

    In my opinion; if you are going to purchase a gas 7.3 for towing get the 373 ratio, it's a great towing ratio and fuel economy ratio. If you are towing up and down elevations frequently then option for the 430 ratio. This engine is great but it's still a gas engine and with a ten speed transmission and 355 ratio the truck will be constantly searching for the proper gear to be in while towing and you'll be locking out the top gears because it will drive you crazy. I ran a 355 ratio in my 6.7 diesel and it was fine but not gas and not for towing.
    For example if you are towing anything between 8000 and 12000 lbs your fuel economy will be 8 to 9 mpg regardless of what gear ratio you have. It's not a car so don't expect economy so do yourself a favor and choose between 373 or 430.

      @HalfShell The f350 has 3.73 standard and the 4.30 is optional. The f250 has the 3.55 and 4.30.
