I hope everyone is having a good weekend! I finally got my hands on the notorious 7.3L Godzilla engine from Ford. you guys have been wanting me to review this engine for a while so here it is!
First off I love that this large gas engine in the f250 superduty's is made in Windsor Ontario Canada. after reading that I was probably a little bias but overall I really like this engine.
I think that ford going to a simple push rod v8 engine is going to greatly improve reliability for these engines as well as give you guys a good strong engine. Ford really seemed to listen to the consumer.
The main reason why I think ford wanted to design this engine was to have a viable replacement for the 6.7 powerstroke. most fleets now a days are tired of dealing with modern diesel engines and having a simple powerful reliable gas option is a perfect alternative to the very complex and expensive diesel options.
now there main downside to the 7.3L gasser right now is the potential lifter failure issue. It seems like the lifter roller and cam shaft lobes are having the hardening shave off and send metal throughout the engine.
personally I think this has something to do with fords variable displacement oil pump only putting out like 6 psi of pressure at idle. and it also seems that these lifter failures are coming from trucks with high idle time. but only time will tell what exactly is really going on.
I do think the issue is a little overblown but it does seem like this may actually be an issue unlike what ford is saying.
I hope you guys liked the video!

Love the Godzilla. I have 2020 F350 Tremor with 4.30 gears & pull a 14,000 lb. 5th wheel. I have 83,000 miles 25,000 towing. Only issue has been plug wires. The 10 speed grade shifts beautifully. I put a 50 gallon gas tank in the bed so I do not have to pull into gas stations with this huge rig. I have towed all over the western United States, and had no issues with elevation or grade. This is the best pick up I have ever owned. Love the Upfitter switches I use them with my off-road lights. I installed electronic runningboards best idea yet.

I owned a 6.7 Powerstroke Super Duty. The engine itself was excellent--its downfall, the same with ALL current generation HD pickup diesels, is the emission system. Extended idling, short distance trips, and light load use will cause no end of expensive problems with the diesel emission system. 20 years ago, fleet buyers that had pickups with extended idle cycles, etc. would buy diesels because of their more frugal fuel use under such conditions. Today, those fleet buyers are largely avoiding diesel pickups like the plague because of the emission issues.

If you pull it out of park into drive before you let the engine idle down it is very rough going into drive. Every once in a while if your driving very easy around a parking lot or something it will get confused on what gear to go to. Other than that i really like it.

I'm running a '22 F350 SRW standard bed with the 7.3 / 4.30 / AT tires. Payload is 4,000#. Been pulling a 16,500# fifth wheel between Illinois, Missouri, and Florida. Runs like a champ! My RV is higher profile, so I hesitate to head out west where it's super windy with the SRW, but I've been in the Tennessee mountains. No issues whatsoever. I do (very rarely) get a hard shift in low gears. Was crawling through the wal-mart parking lot the other day and the transmission shifted so hard at about 3mph that I thought someone had rear ended me! But again, it's only happened a couple times. Going to be watching my oil like a hawk though! Already have 30k miles on it as we are full-time RVrs. Love this engine!

26k miles on my ‘21 with zero issues so far. Oil analysis is not showing any signs of wear or lifter failure so I’m fairly confident I dodged that bullet. Transmission has recently stopped with the hard shifts when cold, but it will occasionally fumble a shift from 3rd to 4th with a slight lurch. I do run a 5Star performance tune though so it could be their trans tuning causing it.

I have a 22 with the 7.3 L and 3.55 rear end. I have 18000 miles on it and it has been great. Love the engine, love the transmission. I think most complaints about the transmission are because it shifts differently than say a 6 speed does. You just have to get use to it. As for hard shifting I rarely feel it shift. And boy when you get on it hard that 10 speed just keeps you in the best torque range. From the bottom of an on ramp to the top I can be doing 80 mph! I love it.

We you asked for my thoughts lol! I have a 2022 F350 7.3 Tremor that I do love. The engine is the heart and the oil is the lifeblood of any vehicle, so it gets synthetic oil changes every 10K or less. I tow a toy hauler of say about 9500lbs occasionally. I do like the 4.30 gears. In the meantime it is a daily driver and despite its huge size, my wife loves it too! We have taken it to SC for a trip and it performed fantastic!
Next week we will be going to Moab UT, Monument Valley UT, and Sedona AZ hauling the trailer, from Ontario. The proof will be in the pudding over the next few weeks regarding reliability and capability. The trans does shift hard sometimes but I find that is unloaded and during shifts in the city.
Economy wise, I can get 16 mpg in the truck when empty and just taking it easy at 90-95K on back highways or roads...but typically 14-15 mpg is easily achievable doing an hour run or longer at reduced speeds as above. Towing is obviously quite different and I am looking forward to seeing how it works out over this long haul.
If you are interested, I will give you an update in a few weeks and some video/photo content to go with it. Great to see your view on the Godzilla!

Most of the time it occurs on the front bank cam only, so much so that of front bank cams are backordered on many OEM stores. No one has a definitive answer on why, perhaps in the quest for MPG lower pressure oil delivery is to blame.

Exhaust lifter loads will rise as cylinder pressure rises, since the valves must open against cylinder pressure at the blowdown event. RV & box truck applications have a more severe duty cycle than passenger applications, spending more of their time at higher loads (= higher cylinder pressures) as well as higher RPM. This may be a contributing factor to the failures.

Currently at 49k miles and it's the best truck I've owned. I've towed close to 20k lbs and normally pull around 10k every day. It's an awesome truck and compares to my stock F550 with a 7.3l diesel. The gearing is 4.30 and with the 10 speed it's amazing! Also live in Colorado and have towed up at 10k ft and average around 6500 ft elevation. Just reset fuel economy headed out for bids and got 13.8 mpg not towing. When towing normal load of around 10k i get around 10 to 11 mpg. When I can afford it, I'll buy another one!

YES, ALEX FINALLY REVIEWS THE GAS TRUCK BEAST!

    • @sly9263
      @sly9263 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Yup! Specsheet numbers don't tell you anything but peak- the dyno is where you actually see what a vehicle is capable of, and that's where the 7.3 is very impressive. By contrast the GM 6.6 gasser doesn't even reach 350 ft lb until 4k rpms while the Ram 6.4 gasser peaks at 380 ft lb at 4k rpms... huge difference. To put that into perspective, both GM and Ram at 3,000 RPMs are at or just over HALF the torque of the Ford at 1500- just let that sink in. That's why people compare the 7.3 to a 10-15 year old diesel- because that's exactly how it performs.

I really wanted to get an F 250 with the Godzilla, because I do a lot of heavy off-road towing on my ranch. I really like the power it produces. In the end though, because these trucks are so expensive, I went with the Ram 2500 6.4, because of the dependability factor. I’ve always been a Ford guy, but the ruggedness and dependability of the 6.4 mated with the ZF8 transmission is all but bullet proof. I’ve gone 5 years now with two 6.4’s, running them hard, without one single issue.

Frequently tow my 10k lb bumper pull camper and does a great job. Keep it under 3000 rpm to save fuel up hills and such. Transmission has been great so far. Not nearly as smooth as my 2012 Tundra by any means though but gets the job done. Only complaint is it hits hard when you shift into drive on a cold startup.

As the owner of a hotshot company, we run ford's and rams. Our rams spend about 1/2 the time in the shop as our ford's do. The Cummings 6.7 is not designed to be a grocery getters like the ford is. We put about 100,000 miles a year on our trucks. We also get about 14 mpg average with our Cummings under a load , verses our ford's which get about 8 mpg under a load.

Indeed, if the variable displacement gerotor oil pump drops oil pressure to ~7 PSI at idle, that sounds like it could become an issue. Ford could revise the gearing and/or gerotor profile to increase pressure at idle while maintaining the same pressure as before at higher RPM. Supposedly, they save ~1 MPG at highway speeds and RPM

Excellent video. Lots of great information. I want to take issue with 1 second of it....at 2:40 you say the 7.3L Godzilla weighs a thousand pounds which it does not. The 6.7L Ford diesel weighs about 990lbs, the Cummins is about 1050lbs and Godzilla weighs about 540lbs. It is immediately obvious that these trucks have a dramatic amount of nose weight removed just by how they ride especially when the terrain/pavement gets rough. Its also evident in how sure footed the trucks are off road in 2wd with 500lbs removed from the front. Their diesel sisters will climb a damn tree in 4wd with all that weight over the front wheels so I'm not taking anything away from them, but the F350/250 with the 7.3L V-8 is VERY well balanced right out of the box.

Part was on backorder so mine was at the dealer for 8 weeks. Loaner was provided. But they fixed it and no issues since. Hard shifting in two different gears was the issue with it finally getting stuck in 10th gear. No charge all warranties. Same hars shifting with my 2018 10speed f150. Real bad in reverse. Another thing to consider with the cab/chassis lifter failures is how's the engines are treated during their first few hours of runtime. Since RV/box truck chassis are started up and moved a few feet and shut down again several times a day throughout the build process, I would argue the numerous short segments of run time without reaching operating temp can be hard on top end components.

I grew up with my dad driving our 1969 F350 4x4 with a swapped in 302. The original 360 died, the replacement 360 was killed by parts jockeys backfiring it to death and the 390 died somewhere halfway to getting it's heads rebuilt. Dad hauled or towed dozers, gravel, cows, grain, firewood, etc with probably about 200hp and maybe 300 lb-ft of torque with no problems. In about 8000 miles it felt like it had a minor engine miss so back in it went. They told me what it was doing wasthe new programing they installed was creating a minor slip in the transmission and it needed the original version. The service manager told me that Ford had redesigned the phasers and they were going to install those. I haven't had any problems with it since. I will say I love this engine. My father and I deliver campers part-time in the United States and bought 2 of the 2021 f350 single rear wheel 7.3L running the 3.73 gear ratio one had a lifter failure at 82000 miles so we had the cam lifters and oil pump replaced and are currently at 107000 miles on that one. The other one has 156000 miles both are running strong with that being said the main problem we have had is actually melting the sparkplug wires. In my opinion the main thing killing these engines is the programming while using cruse control or running them like a Chevy 350 from 1975. If you start down or up a hill it can bring the RPM up around 5K to try and maintain the desired speed. Don't get me wrong, I love this engine and the 10 speed transmission and would gladly buy it again, but that is where I believe the failure is coming from

My 2020 f250 king ranch has the Godzilla engine in it mated with the ten speed trans. At first the trans on occasion shifted hard and seemed to get confused especially at lower speeds. I did have it check out too start a paper trail on it but they found nothing wrong at the time. As the milage added up the trans seemed to learn and shifted much smoother but then there was a software update and I have not had issues since. My truck does idle a lot and everything looks good so far with thirty thousand miles on it.

Hey I heard trans learns your driving habits and will eventually smooth out.

Good to hear the transmission shifting settled down.

6 shortblocks . I like to know what Ford is going to do. There’s plenty of large construction companies working on roads that idle their trucks. They purchase large quantities of trucks.

Please consider not using “trans” to refer to the transmission in the future. It may be misconstrued as a hurtful statement.

@@Blatstein You better notify Merriam Webster dictionary on that as an abbreviation of the word transmission along with other words.

I have a 2020 F350 with the godzilla engine. I haul a slide in truck camper and have approximately 22,000 miles with no problems. As you stated there have been problems with the spark plug wires. Would you recommend being proactive and replacing the wiring harness even though I haven’t had any issues?

id love to see you do a transmission video. My 10r80 in my 2018 f150 with the 2.7 ecoboost had hard shifting which according to my dealer was normal. Well here we are at 62,000KM and my tranny broke. I had a broken gear inside.... they replaced the whole unit . From what i understand the superduty has a beefier version of the 10r80

Ram has fold down / kick dowb steos on thd back that rotate to the side. They are more useful than the cutout steps are, since you can customize their height and location to your liking.

16:10 about the oil pump, the old 400ci V8 was considered a dog mostly because it had terrible bottom end wear potential, but most of that bottom end wear occurred at low RPM due to low oil pressure because the pump volume was too low at low RPM. Otherwise the 400 is a fine engine (not withstanding it’s low power and being choked down with 70s era smog junk). If you happen to be building one you just put in a high volume oil pump and low RPM oil starvation is solved. 400s that spent most of their time on the highway at cruise usually didn’t have bottom end wear issues. I suspect Ford is going to have to revisit the oil pump issue on the Godzilla.

7.3 is a game changer period! If people get past a 2% lifter failure rate and 13mpgs which by the way is cheaper than diesel at current costs these trucks would fly off the lot. To be honest i havent seen a 7.3 sitting at my local dealer its all 6.7 because they want 100k for them now at 7 or 9%.

If 2% is a normal rate then it really is a nothing-burger.

I see some really expensive aftermarket conversions to a standard oil pump. Surprised no one has came out with a kit for the factory pump… I couldn’t find a picture of the variable displacement pump to see if it was mechanical or electronically controlled but either way it would just be a matter of either changing a spring or some programming/in between harness to increase the output at idle. Enjoyed your video, I’ll be replacing my service truck soon and deletes are getting harder to come by

@@joeb4275 92-96 are simply OBS trucks. 87-91 are definitely brick nose due to the headlights they are almost shaped like bricks. Trust me Google brick nose ford and see what pops up in images.
