Great review. Finally someone who adresses PMW-flickering! It dazzles me, that noone mentiones this. I didn't even know that this issue even existed until a few months ago. I always wondered, why my Eyes would kind of feel funny when I used the laptop in bed at night at very low brightness. I recently bought a XPS 15 with the OLED screen and let me tell you, the PWM and the "Anti-Burn-In" mechanisms Samsung used in this panel is horrible for your eyes. You really get uncomfortable when you stare at white backgrounds for a long period of time. Yet noone talks about this! In my opinion, manufacturers shouldn't even be allowed to release any laptops with major PWM-flickering! You will stare at those screens for hours and hours - so even if PWM is only potentially damaging for your eyes it should be banned!
Finally, a reviewer that knows what he's on about and isn't recycling the same old lines, plus it is so refreshing to hear an Aussie accent rather than some monotone suburb US one. liked and subbed from the UK!!
After bought an x1 carbon 7th with 4k, found the pwm flicker screen truly horrible. Watched several reviews, you are the only one said the negative side of the screen rather than really blow it up.
I bought this laptop somewhat based on this review as I was also considering the dell XPS13 (which Josh didn't recommend) and it is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. Super fast and boots in no time. Keyboard is amazing. Super light and portable. Great battery life. I've owned it now for 2 weeks and the fans have not even turned on once, mind you I haven't done any serious work on it yet mainly just web browsing and watching videos.
Great review of the CarbonX1. Agreed. The build quality is way better vs. the XPS 9300. More of a business focused computer but looks to be rock solid. I'm sold on the 4k version. Thx again..

I've been using an x1 carbon 7th gen for about 3 months now and will never leave the think pad lineup. I was considering the 4k screen for the next one I'm glad I saw this review. I hope the next iteration has the 16:10 screen.
@@captainrj3121 wow really sorry for this late reply. I got the fhd matte 400 nit display, and I feel it could be brighter. Great for indoors or working next to a window but direct sunlight might cause a problem.

For me - it's like you are describing my T480. Lenovo rarely does something RIGHT today, but it still does that from time to time. I guess this is one of those times. I won't replace my t480 with this one any time soon but if something happens to it I may consider buying this one. Thank you!
Very useful review. I am using your review solely for my premium purchase. I think you covered the key things that matter to me the most for this purchse. Thanks.
Something to be aware of. X1 carbon laptops have very reflective screens. Even the 1080P matte screen reflects a lot. You can see the reflection of the fingers while typing. (Very annoying) Everything is great but the screen and track pad is a bit too small. If you like to click with the track pad you will be hitting the button edge of the laptop a lot.
Great review Josh, sucks they decided to go for the old 14nm architecture (might wait for the 8th generation version). Also I can't find any configuration on their website using any 10th gen Intel CPU's, maybe they're not selling them in the UK. Plus there is a WQHD screen as an option which may be a good compromise? Thanks for the review man and I hope your channel blows up soon, you deserve it!
I’ve been looking to replace my Dell XPS 13 2015, and have been debating between the newer XPS models or switching to no nonsense Lenovo. I think you’ve sealed my decision to strongly consider the X1. Subbed!
Well I am pretty much torn apart as well between the XPS 13 9300 and this X1 Carbon 8th Gen. They're both really great and have strong sides but I cannot really decide you made a decision yet? And if based on what?
@@achi9133 I'm going Lenovo. The Dell XPS 13 hinge is not as strong as Lenovos, and went bad and wobbly for me after around year 3-4. Lenovos are tanks, look great in all environments whether business or casual, and quite frankly I just don't want to get another Dell XPS 13. Used Lenovo X1 Carbons are also going for cheap, and you can easily swap out ram and SSDs in most cases depending if you get the T or X series. You can get a decent working used X1 on ebay for $350 and buy your own SSD & Windows.
The location of the CTRL key is logical. With the pinky finger on CTRL, you can then press Z, X, and C with your ring, middle, and index fingers respectively.
Nice video man but most of us are more concerned With the CPU speed Overclocking Whether there's a graphics card Ram The type of memory, SSD or HDD And what not , apart from that your content is great 🚀🚀🙌
Josh, thank for your review, but I still have a doubt about the monitor. What option is the best for daily use as a developer 1) 14.0" FHD (1920x1080) IPS, low power, anti-glare, 400nits, 2) 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, touchscreen, anti-glare, 300 nits or 3) 14.0" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS, anti-glare, 300 nits
Not Josh, but I have the WQHD as I wanted a higher resolution than 1080 and wanted a matte display. I run linux and well it was a bit annoying at first as there isn't any great way to scale the interface at non integer values. So I lowered the resolution to 2048x1152 which well is not the full 1440 but is still manageable. Text is great on this display and only in direct sunlight do I find it not bright enough.
I really enjoy your explanation . I'd love to get to know your opinion on the Lenovo X1 extreme Gen 2, or just the "Generation" line of Lenovo. Keep up the good work it's a very nice channel you are running!
Hi Josh. I'm already getting overwhelmed by so many laptop reviews til I saw yours. I agree with the majority that the content is great, punchy, and just really helpful, especially for a novice like me who is contemplating on buying my first ever personal laptop (been using my company-issued Lenovo X270 laptop til I resigned). Just a clarification. When you were explaining something about PWM, may I know why getting a model with 1080 screen is better than with a 4K? Is this something I can choose (or tell the sales agent to configure) before buying? Also, is the RAM/SSD expandable to 32GB and 1TB, respectively?
FWIW I recommend the 6th Gen over the 7th. The chassis is almost identical but the keyboard has even more travel distance, and the screen is available in 2K HDR at 500nits, so pixel density, colour accuracy and brightness is fantastic without being an excessive battery drain and no PWM! Plus it has a micro SD slot! Downsides are no one-hand open, awful speakers, and 2K HDR screen is glossy, but that's a cheap/easy fix with a matte screen protector. Since it's the older model you can find them at even better prices with a 3 year warranty.
Finally a laptop I recommend!!!

Great channel-it deserves alot more subscribers
You are a legend James!
FINALLY, a video producer I can recommend. THIS is how a video of ANY subject should be produced. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Jason
Love your style. I. Hope you get big man. Thanks!
+1 for that 4K opinion. It's like having a high refresh rate .It's good but not at the cost of battery life.
The location of the CTRL key is logical. With the pinky finger on CTRL, you can then press Z, X, and C with your ring, middle, and index fingers respectively.
Ur reviews are actually great man! Instant subscibe
Best laptop review channel on TH-cam.Very detailed review.❤️ from India.
Nice video man but most of us are more concerned
With the CPU speed
Overclocking
Whether there's a graphics card
Ram
The type of memory, SSD or HDD
And what not , apart from that your content is great 🚀🚀🙌
At last, i've found another good review channel to watch alongside Lisa Gade at MobileTechReview!
Lisa is legendary.
Great review.
As far as I know you can switch the function of the FN and the CTRLkeys.
I actually like my FN key on the left side because I use it thousands.
Finally a decent well thought to the point review. Well done. 👍
This guy is dead serious about giving tech info
I'm so glad you mentioned that. I'm considering getting one for a follow up
Just subscribing for the witting way the review was made xD

You've a great smile Josh. Great review as well
