    Olivia and Inigo Dancing Art by Takana:
    (Srplus):www.zerochan.n...
    ----
    Olivia is a dancer who once travelled with a group of entertainers. One day, a corrupt noble tried to kidnap her, but she was rescued by Basilio, Regna Ferox’s West Kahn. Grateful for his heroics, she settled in Regna Ferox where she accompanied Basilio and his right hand man, Lon’qu. During Chrom’s escape from Plegia after failing to rescue Emmeryn, Olivia was responsible for securing carriages so that they could escape, but she was caught by Mustafa. thanks to his mercy though, she was allowed to go. Olivia joins Chrom’s party after they defeat Mustafa and escape Plegia.
    Did you ever wonder why Olivia wears what she wears? Why she where’s borderline lingerie despite being the most shy girl in the army? Why she would wear a top that exposes her chest, but also covering her chest in her in-game portrait? What purpose does this discrepancy serve? What’s the point? This video goes at length to really get to the bottom of this question. And as I’m about to argue, its meant to outline the two personalities that Olivia exhibits.
    Maribelle puts it best: on the battlefield, Olivia is daring, brave and will help her allies without a second thought. Her outfit is unique, creative and accentuates her womanly features. So, as a passionate performing artist and entertainer, this outfit makes sense. And we see the practicality of her outfit when she’s dancing for her friends on and off the battlefield. But out of battle? She reduces herself to a wet noodle. Shy and nervous around others and prone to embarrassing herself. She becomes “The Mouse”. But there’s another personality trait about her that may surprise you…

      I like this video a lot and I can understand why you had a writer's block on this one. Olivia is more complicated than what is on the surface, and many enjoy her character for various reasons and interpretations. She is one of my favorites in Awakening.
      I can relate to her in some ways, mainly in how I knock myself down all the time. Instead of getting praise though, I was bullied constantly. I felt like I wasn't good at anything, and not good enough for anyone. And when I would get compliments or encouragement, I didn't believe them. I still struggle often with the lack of confidence, self-worth, and so on, but I'm working on it.
      There's a ton that goes on with all of that, so you tackled the support science well.

    Awakening has such a fucking good cast I hate how people hate on it. A lot of characters start out with anime tropes, its true. But those tropes are a good marker for people just playing fast, and supports always turn them on their head or build on them and make great characters

    • @ApexGale
      @ApexGale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      the problem is specifically the trope. the trope ends up becoming a main gimmick that you see so frequently that you dismiss the character. the writers were probably so worried people wouldn't enjoy the characters so they had to give them all some sort of gimmick. cordelia is in unrequited love, vaike is an idiot, sumia is a klutz, virion is a skirt chaser, blah blah blah.
      I'm an old school FE fan and i hate that characters with actual nuance are buried under shallow tropes because the writers were not confident enough in themselves to leave out the gimmicks or at least draw less attention to them. this is one of the main reasons why older players prefer the older characters - because most* of them don't have that shallow trope. some do (like Sain and Saul for example), but most don't. it gets worse when so many of the characters like to inflate the MU's ego because they somehow are the most acceptable person around

    • @driftnick7022
      @driftnick7022 6 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      Personally, I'm fine with the tropes themselves as long as that's not their entire character. The trope is your base, and then you expand upon it. Like in this video, how Olivia is "the shy girl", but has all these other nuances that the video mentions, and even how she grows out of them. Which is something I feel most of the Awakening cast is able to do. Another favorite of mine is Virion, who is the skirt chaser, but turns out to be the duke of Rosanne and is a skillful enough tactician to pull off the zero-percent-approval gambit he did in order to avoid sending his people to die in a battle they couldn't win, completely willing to bear the scorn of his people.
      There's also the issue that Fates has A SHITLOAD of characters, so investing the same time and care into each and everyone of them would take a really long time, and as a result, the trope ends up being the whole character. On top of the fact that the translation of said supports aren't all that good to begin with. But there's a few diamonds in the rough, in my opinion. One of my personal favorites being Camilla, though the reasons why aren't realized to their full potential in the game itself, so the fact that one has to make their own interpretations of a character to realize said potential should speak of the weak writing of the game.

    • @OrdonWolf
      @OrdonWolf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I always thought Awakening characters had a lot of depth, and many of the supports are great.
      The problem is that it's hard to get attached to them because they're completely irrelevant to the story. Because we only get to know them in supports, we never actually see them develop (we only briefly read about their possible development from their children). Because supports are non-linear, most are just there to re-establish the main character trait, or to reveal some quirk they have.
      I personally found myself caring more about the 'flatter' characters from Jugdral than the Awakening cast simply because those actually feel like a big part of the world and I got to see them go through all that shit.

    • @izzy1356
      @izzy1356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed, and Fates especially was the same way.
      Kinda sad most people don't go through the supports in either game that much, ESPECIALLY with the children units of Awakening or the Fates retainers (aside from Laslow, Selena, and Odin)

    • @taliacarter5802
      @taliacarter5802 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree. I fell in love with Awakening's cast, and do believe there's a lot of depth to be had in the supports. I think the problem is that you have to dig through a lot of sub-par supports to get the good ones.
      The devs took the approach of allowing each of the shepherds to support/marry each other in just about any combination, which inevitably means they had to write a *lot* of support conversations. So, in some cases, they had to sacrifice quality for quantity. There's only so many ways you can show a character's personality traits while keeping the character consistent. So I find that about half of any given characters' support chains don't provide much of anything meaningful.
      However, if you accept those supports as simply needing to be there for the sake of inheritance mechanics, and focus instead on the more interesting supports each character has, there is a plethora of depth to each character. And I think this video highlights that perfectly

      The supports really flesh out her positive and negative traits in a really balanced way. She's loyal and dedicated to her friends, has a strong sense of justice but at the same time is judgemental, inconsiderate and pushy. And well, even when she tries to better herself, she often snaps at people due to poor social skills. It's always entertaining to read her supports, especially when she starts dishing out verbal slapdowns

    An excellent analysis, but I fear the Virion support was a bit downplayed.
    What Virion does isn't just words of encouragement, or nice bluntness. He manages to get her, as the mouse, to admit that she's talented in front of someone else than herself, which is a pretty big step in her own development.

      @@aninymouse1651 Same, I paired them on my first play though because I thought “Oh Virion’s hair is close to Indigo’s canon hair color, he likes dancing, and flirts with women”. Virion is pretty underrated as a character. He’s foppish and a womanizer, sure, but he’s essentially the shepherd’s older brother figure and helps others through slumps and lack of confidence. His support with Male Robin is a great example of this. Pretty wise fella.

    I love Olivia, and I'm shocked by how much your in-depth analysis showed me how much I have in common with her. See, I'm an artist and have self-confidence issues. Whenever my teacher or someone tells me how much they like one of my drawings, I'm quick to say "Oh, no, it's really not that great, there's people younger than me who have more talent." After watching this, it kind of helped me realize my own secret vanity and that I was doing it to avoid blame and responsibility, or to just fish for compliments or validation. But you helped me realize that I need to be less of the Mouse and more of the Bold. From now on, whenever someone compliments or criticizes my work, I'm going to accept it completely.
    Oh, and I like Ricken and Olivia's support too, but I love her too much to marry her to him now :p

    • @JadestonePony
      @JadestonePony 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      As an artist, I've often slipped into this habit as well. --Well, anyone can engage in this kind of self-effacement for anything, but I feel it's especially easy for artists to fall into this trap, because showing off a piece of your self-expression to others often feels akin to laying bare your soul to the whole world for scrutiny. And additionally, since you do it as your occupation, you often feel that the value of your work is equal to the value of your purpose or function in society.
      So when someone says your work is worthless, it's easy to fall into the downward spiral of "well if my work is worthless, then I am worthless, and if I am worthless then I am unnecessary and unneeded and will be abandoned by society to die a slow death in isolation!" Sounds like a pretty extreme train of thought, but it comes a deep-seated fear that basically every human being ever carries inside of them from back in the good old days where social ostracization actually resulted in death alone in the wilderness. However irrational the threat of abandonment actually is in the context of someone critiquing your work, you still don't even want to FEEL the slightest notion of it, and so you come out with all the excuses and the self-effacement to protect your feelings and fish for reassurance that you're valuable and worthwhile.
      I've started to avoid falling into this pit trap by learning to not conflate the value of my art with my value as a person. And it's a lot easier to do this when I remember where my carnal fear of being useless is coming from, so that I can back up and gauge exactly how irrational that fear is. And most of the time it's ridiculously irrational. I don't put myself down nearly as much as I used to anymore! :)
      Plus, there's the added bonus that you're far more effective at inspiring others when you're not preoccupied with putting yourself down. ;)

    Huh..... Interesting. I never thought of this actually. I admittedly kind of understand this line of thinking, the idea of being so focused on your perceived flaws and imperfections that you feel the need to be validated by setting up scenarios for compliments and ensure that no one's opinion of you is lowered by your failures.
    I really understand this, and you often don't know you're doing it.

      I have to question how you define vanity, because what you described doesn't really sound vain. The desire to point out her own faults and to be self deprecating while yes is a crutch and a means to ward off criticism I don't think it is a means to fish for praise. Olivia is no doubt self conscious, but It's more like she is only that way when it comes to others seeing her preform. You can practice and practice at something until you feel like you mastered it, but all it takes possibility of failure in front of others to question yourself. She has performance anxiety that causes her to worry about failure, but when she actually gets going she forgets about all her worries and stress. If anything the praise she receives isn't she actively seeks out, but receives it as a by product of her self deprecation.
      As for her support with Fredrick, it's not hard to believe that it starts off professional and the idea that a person, let alone woman with self esteem issues would get flustered at the idea of a bunch of men would think that Olivia was just pining for praise (or something else entirely) isn't that hard to believe. And for her A support, her asking for Fredrick's opinion on her again feels more like wanting to know if he hold any affection for her (because she has a crush on him) rather than just being because she wants to be praised by him.

    "If Olivia is alone, she will recognize her own talent and even praise herself." (7:10) Honestly I feel like that is kind of a reach. What she is saying there just sounds like something a kid would do after some pretend performance, while you make it sound like its proof that she thinks highly of her talents. How many children do you think pretend an audience is cheering them on when they're practicing in sports or dance or even music? it doesn't mean that these kids think their really talented.
    That is not the only issue I found, just a few minutes later you talk about Frederick's and Olivia's B support. In it Olivia got upset that Frederick asked every guy in camp what they think of her because it makes her sound like she's desperate for attention. You described her worry of this as and I quote "irrational, so arbitrary of a worry that it is almost unbelievable. Like who gives a crap, right?" Real talk, what girl would not be bothered by this! Imagine if a girl in high school was wondering what guys thought about her so she asks a friend for his opinion who then, with the intent to help her, goes and asks every guy in school what they think about her. Pretty much every girl would be thinking exactly what Olivia was thinking. The fact you described it as "so arbitrary a worry that is it almost unbelievable" is in my opinion ridiculous. I get it that Olivia said she was doing it for professional reasons but she's still a girl, how could you expect her not t get embarrassed by that?
    Look, I'm happy to see the cast of fire emblem awakening getting some attention but I think your making some big stretches in this video. I feel if anyone were to closely examine what your saying they would find that you leave out certain information and exaggerate others in order to prove your theory.

    • @shimmyjamily
      @shimmyjamily 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Sogou Higishikata agreed. We're also talking about Frederick here. The guy who made a poster of a basically naked Chrom to inspire the rest of the army. *Facepalm* I don't think we can trust him if he were to go and ask every other guy what they thought of her. He would certainly make matters worse. Her fears were not irrational.

    This is an unbelievably insightful look not only into Olivia's character, but into human psychology in general. I've always asserted that insecurity and self-obsession are two sides of the same coin, and you pointed it out so undeniably here that I am in awe! I don't think vanity is the right word. Most senses of the word refer to somebody who shows a lot of pride for their abilities or appearance, and Olivia shows neither, at least as "the mouse" around other people. She has self-centered insecurities and is afraid of being judged harshly by others, but that's not even that uncommon for creative people, the only difference is how often she pushes that point and fishes for compliments and lowers expectations so she can't be judged harshly. It's kind of a big character flaw, but you make it sound even worse than it is.

    • @izzy1356
      @izzy1356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      GeneralBrwni As an artist with artist friends, you hit the nail on the head, it IS really common among artists.
      Maribelle and Panne especially hit it on the head with their Olivia supports.

    • @BrisingrFan55
      @BrisingrFan55 6 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      UnDefinedLegacy not saying that it isn't a flaw (OP directly still calls it one), just discussing if 'vanity' is the right word for it.
      Personal interpretation: she talks about how weak and clumsy she is because she wants to avoid judging herself when she fails, rather than avoiding other's judgement. It's a more direct interpretation of Panne's accusation, that she's setting herself up for failure (literally setting up her mind for when she fails, not setting up other people's opinions of her). This ties better into her fishing for compliments, and makes her flaw less about vanity, and more about a deep fear of failure and regret from her low self-esteem.

    I think you may be reading too much into Olivia's intentions. It's not too weird to fantasize about praise, and as an expert in dancing, Olivia will be the one to most find fault in her own skill. Similar to how few artists feel satisfied with their work. To an untrained eye she might look perfect, but she herself probably notes every slight timing misstep and jerky motion she makes. I do artwork, and lots of regular people will say that it's good or great, but I am aware of the gulf between my abilities and a top level pro or something.

    • @pokekitty1
      @pokekitty1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      yeah i think using the word vanity in regards to this is inappropriate because the reason people have high standards for their work is due to their high work ethic. even a minor slip up can be glaringly obvious if one spends the majority of their time working or training in a skill. it not vain to not want the average person to treat them like god incarnate for doing their job.

    One can stem from the other. Someone with very low self esteem could look for attention and praise as a way for self-validation. "If people will love me, maybe I could love myself" kind of mindset. Olivia has such low self esteem that she down right NEEDS praise to make her feel valuable and not a worthless liability. Olivia is not as much Vain as she is Self-centered. Or, at least, that's my take on it all.

    So far, the only characters you've covered are those which are well known throughout the fanbase or those that people that deam not interesting but that you find amazing. While i don't mind this, personally, I'd rather see characters from the older unknown characters. Or rather characters and how their direct interaction with others (like Eliwood and Hector, Ninian, etc)
    The reason i say this is due to me feeling as i don't know many of the older fe characters. I may know the gist like Arvis and his BBQ or Marth and his generic "hero" lord personality. I know your basing these on payment, or least from what i remember. But most people who request characters are those who have most likely played awakening, fates, or echoes since older games seem harder to come by.
    Also one more thing. But i do feel like in order to get a true perception of a character, you need to read both English and Japanese lines as localization tends to change certain things that completely change a characters personality from there original portrayal.

      SabdierZ the advantage of fates and awakening characters is that they have many supports so there is many material for ghast to make a video and its easier.

      Rose Dougherty As pointed out in another comment I don't think vanity is the right word. Yes she tries to complement herself but mostly when she isn't around others. Vanity would do this around others. She just wants to improve her confidence to be more "useful" Yes she has insecurities but don't we all? But during her dances and battles she can just.. Forget about insecurities. Maybe she sees it as her only talent. But she strives to benefit others and not be useless. This is almost pallerel to vanity and narcissism.
      But hey, that's just what I think

    Hello ^^ this is the very first video of yours that I watched, I just came across it because Olivia is one of my favorite characters in Awakening ^^ I like her so much that I'm willing to make her cosplay, and that's also because I see a lot of myself in her. Why? Well, she's a dancer, I dream of being a writer - let's say we're both artists (although I'm not really XD). And many people have said this before me in the comments: being an artist, her personality is actually pretty understandable.
    When I plot my stories, I dream of them being bestsellers, called "Classics" all over the world, people loving them, writing fanfictions on them; I love my stories and I just wish they could make people happy, give the world something. JUST LIKE Olivia, in her C support with Maribelle, is alone and dreams of a big audience loving her dance. It doesn't really mean that I think I'm gonna be the new Shakespeare or Jane Austen or whatever, it's just a nice fantasy, a dream :) and I believe that's the case for her.
    When people need my writing, I use it. Even if it's just "Hey, we want to write a letter to our principal to let him know about the problems in our school, can you help us?", I say "Yes" and try my best to help people out, because I know I have some skill using words. JUST LIKE Olivia uses her dance in battle without hesitating. It's obvious that artists recognize they have some amount of talent in the things they do, otherwise they wouldn't do them at all.
    I see soooooo many flaws in my writing, though. I often find a chapter boring or uninteresting; then someone reads it and says it's good, and all my complaining about it before may sound like I was in need of attention. I wasn't: sometimes I really loathe the things I write. As I'm sure sometimes Olivia loathes her dancing, and she thinks people are not gonna like it. And, as far as I'm concerned, people can tell me a thousand times "This chapter is good!", but until it doesn't feel right TO ME, that chapter is just not gonna be good enough.
    So, what I'm saying is: people with very very very very low self-esteem exist, and I'm one of them, and Olivia is a pretty accurate depiction of them XD I totally can't see her vanity, sorry. Maybe I don't want to, I just want to see her like a /sincerely/ insicure character. I very much like the fact that some supports (for example Panne's) show how such behaviour can be misunderstood; and I also like your message, "Just be bolder and accept your talent!". It just takes a while for an artist to do so, if they're not bold in the first place XD it's actually painful to be seen as "vain" when you just really can't appreciate yourself.
    This is just my personal opinion though, and sorry for the wall-text. Your video is well done, it just seemed so negative against this character I felt the urge to defend her XD but please don't take this as a declaration of war! Such in depth reasoning is rare to find nowadays. And you showed how complex and interesting a secondary character like this can be when it's well written, like she is in Awakening :3
    Kudos, and good job!

      Danmccloud1889 There isn’t much to work with I find her interesting but she doesn’t have that many support. The ones she does well only two are good. I like Matilda and deltheas but alm and grey were pretty garbage.

    In Awakening, my first Fire Emblem, I chose her as my first waifu! Her character was so flawed yet meaningfully graceful. I have no regerts! By the way, pink haired Morgan looked perfect!

    Is roasting herself the same as looking for attention? Or trying to lower her standards? What if she hates herself?

      Basically, she's fishing for compliments in around about way. If she hated herself or the way she looked she wouldnt wear revealing clothing when wasnt perfoming.

    I can easily see Inigo's timeline Olivia thanking Maribelle for the advice by making her his godmother if that support is canon.
