Howdy, friends! "How do I get started on TH-cam" is one of the most common questions I've gotten over the years, so I figured it was time to put all my advice in one place! I hope you find the video useful! If you'd like to join our Discord server and hang out with other like-minded aspiring creators, you can join by supporting the channel on Patreon patreon.com/jtchapman
Being a TH-camr is very similar to running your own business. You should upload things people want to see, just like businessman should offer product/service that people need. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of help from Fame ster of course) will always pay off at the end.
@@JTChapman almost like you're seizing the means of production and releasing it to the working class or something, but I'm not gonna comment on that ;)
Don't be so impressed, dude is profiting from his "sharing" and just leveraging his white privilege to hoard wealth and practice ZERO cooperative economics with the people whose struggles he profits from making content about. Hypocrite owner class fraud. Just another day of being a white leftist 😆
The audio vs. video thing is so important, especially considering lots of people watch videos passively throughout the day. The stock audio quality on most consumer level cameras is almost an afterthought, it seems.
It’s strange-I just happened to click off a video because of its bad audio, then this video showed up next in my recommendations. You’re totally right.
Agreed, when teaching online classes and training at the beginning of the pandemic, I was using a $50 Deity D4 Mini shotgun, and the audio was really solid, and it was very good at not picking up background noise, or my wife moving around on the other side of the same room. I added a $20 LED panel light on my desk, used a LED desk lamp ( that I already had ) for my fill, and recorded on the built-in 720p camera on my laptop, and put the laptop on a stand. It was under $100 to go from awful to pretty good.
So glad you mentioned the fact that most “how to TH-cam videos” miss out the part on how to grow the channel realistically. Thanks for the tips and tricks
Glad you decided to share your personal knowledge. If you feel like stepping outside of your comfort zone, you could look into talking to virtual TH-camrs, or vTubers for short. It's definitely a weird field because they play by different rules.
Great information! It's one of the most complete and honest guides I've seen. Once a week upload it is... I'm starting budget and simple and level up as I reach new milestones. Thanks for the excellent content, and good luck on all your projects! Good work!
Another great video. Been following your other channels for years and will follow this one too. Congrats and hope 2024 is another successful year for you and all your followers.
While i am intrigued about becoming a video essayist/reporter/documentarian, i know i won't put in the work to do so. It just ain't me. I'm just here to consume. Also, don't worry. I don't just consume and let that placate my activist spirit. I'm hitting the streets and organizing with others. Thanks for being a part of that journey in a way. A gentle wind pushing me along my path. A small beam of sunlight to warm the grey day. A squeaky fart to make me laugh and keep me grounded from all these forest metaphors, reminding me I'm on a toilet and should probably get going...
Nice video with some helpful tips and all that while not trying to give anyone a false hope, with what starting a channel means. I'm looking forward to learn more in your future videos.
This channel came about at a perfect time honestly - I just started posting consistently on my channel about 2 months ago, and content like this is really helpful, especially coming from someone who has actually made it on the platform. Thank JT!
great timing, I took the leap and uploaded my first youtube video literally monday of this week. I overlooked a few of the steps you outlined here, so I'm definitely going to reference this and fix things up so I can be off to a good start. I think starting with the content was helpful for me because if I get bogged down in the prep I have a tendency to fail to launch. But now I'm fired up and ready to polish.
Talking more deeply about age restrictions would be good. Along with language, use of bleeps over harsh words, and the best way to accommodate diversity of tactics without us chopping our legs off. What will demonetize us on this? Can we be age restricted and still be monetized? There is so much that I've learned I haven't learned! Thanks for starting this channel. I enjoy and subscribe to Second Thought!
I mentioned "diversity of tactics" because I want to discuss current events from a left-wing drive but also market somewhat as a comedian. I will use in any stand-up swear words. I know I might be better off on TH-cam without that language but was wondering...how does TH-cam treat bleeps? Can I not have the censoring and still be monetized? I'm not marketing this channel to minors. I don't understand how TH-cam works...the algorithms.
Great video, JT! I've been procrastinating in the 'learning how to youtube' stage for years because I can't settle on a channel idea, but it means I'm confident in saying this is one of the better ones I've seen! 😅Audio is so important! One of my biggest specific peeves is when someone's voice is super quiet, but their intro or transition music is BLARING. It can be literally painful, people, please.
Great video JT! As a fan of Second Thought and the Deprogram, I love that you started this channel. I always wished I could pick your brain on how you make your style of content and this is a great start. Your style has inspired me to make a video essay type channel. It will start as a voiceover only channel but eventually want to transition to on camera. However, as you can tell I'm stuck. lol. Fear of looking stupid and making a bad video. I have over 50 ideas to start with but its the script writing that's intimidating. I tend to cop out and have chatgpt write it and then I change it around. Another thing is b-roll selection/sound and pacing of the video. Perhaps you could make a video about that as well, when you find the time of course. Thank you for letting me vent and express my youtube fears lol. Keep up the great work JT.
I'm so glad you found the video useful! Don't worry too much about making a bad video, literally every single TH-camr has put out at least one bad video in their time on the platform. Myself included! I have probably 7 or 8 videos that I've made private. You learn and grow, and people love to see that progress.
I've been following Second Thought for a long time. You're one of the few TH-camrs who didn't put this behind a pay wall. I've been kicking around the idea of making videos for a while. Either way thank you for doing this.
Decided to check this new channel out after following you on Second Thought for quite awhile. I have been on the fence about starting a channel for quite awhile. This was helpful.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm one of those people that is always being told "You should have a youtube!" and now I know how to shape what I'd possibly do!
So I have [with varying amounts of success] been doing TH-cam for a bit over 10 years now and I cannot agree more with the idea of a videos idea list (passive idea generation specifically). You have to have passion for it, or you just won't, because it doesn't pay well enough to slog through like you might a 9-5; it's that simple. I will say though, I have found my video ideas list (folder in my case) to be sometimes daunting, almost like unfinished projects that I plan to do "someday" - but honestly just don't think about it like that. They are ideas for when you need/want them. I have never wanted to make a video and not found something there that I could either start, finish, or pick up on and take in a new direction that I was feeling passionate about it. While I have by no means become successful through content creation, I have successfully created content when it was what I wanted to be doing, so don't listen to me because I have 1M+ subs (watch the video for that), but as someone else doing this for literally a decade, I can definitely say that is a tenant of continued passionate idea flow. Also really.. find something you are passionate about because the algorithm does *not* like it if you take a break 😅
I’m a 2D animator without plans on becoming a “TH-camr”, but I still benefited a lot from looking at your creative process! Thank you and wish you the best JT!
This was really interesting! I don't actually want to be a TH-camr, but I've always wondered how it was done! Thanks! And I wish you great success with this new channel! 😊
Honestly, neither did I at first but then I realized speaking in front of a camera or rather learning to would help in other avenues of life including my day job. You'd be surprised at how much public speaking is an actual skill that requires a lot of time and energy to refine over time. Lord knows I thought it was easy.
Most (all?) of this advice also applies to artists making reels on Instagram and TikTok (which is why I'm watching this). Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
I have literally everything physically except for a good mic because during my active videomaking time most of the ones I wanted were too expensive and phones didn't have top audio quality yet to record with. Now that I'm thinking about making content again, having both choices feels ironic. I'll probably go with the newer Rode Videomic or a Zoom and upgrade my current USB mic on my computer to a better one for voiceovers. Location/Background is another issue, or rather making what I have look less flat since I have a mostly white/grey background. Would love if you made some content on set design on a budget and ambient lighting in the background. And while I know you don't often shoot videos on the go it would be nice to see how you'd handle shooting videos outside alone, from the fear of filming yourself in public to tripods that won't plot revenge on you for being on slightly uneven ground. Agree on the camera bit. A phone's backcamera does just fine nowadays (especially for vlogging), but if someone wants to have the plus points that a camera lense comes with I'd always recommend looking for a camera that's compatible with STM lenses and therefore autofocusing quietly during filming. Not having to worry about your focus is definitely a positive. I'm currently slowly switching to DaVinci Resolve myself, because once I don't get the student discount on Adobe CC anymore it's gonna be useless for me since I already own Affinity to replace Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. "How the frig does a TH-cam banner work?" absolutely got me good hahaha, those can't be explained by science or a marketing team. These Tips and Tricks!!!!!! I need that teleprompter aaaah! No more ten takes per sentence! That's so neat, I always wondered what you used for that. And good tip on using the Zoom mic plugged in. Bruh, the backups! I have all my old videos on a 1TB hard drive. Glad you made such a comprehensive video JT! Also what kind of smart lights are you using in the background?
Not really interested in creating content but was interested on the videos content and damn gotta say excelent content. Cant wait to see what else you have in store for this and your other channels. Keep up the great work
You've always had such consistently great production quality; I'm not exactly planning on ever making a youtube channel, but I'm still probably going to watch all of your videos on this channel because of how well you present the information. Than and your voice is very soothing.
I have a gut feeling that the next big wave of TH-cam growth is coming soon. The recent retirement of well known TH-camrs and surprising amount of small channels I’ve seen blow up recently gives me hope.
I finally got around to watching this. Thank you for making this JT. I'm not planning to do the TH-camr path directly per se but mostly as an extension of my online presence as a digital artist. Many of the fundamentals, schemes, and tips you mentioned are highly transferable to just about any creative content out there and so I think I got a lot out of this video. I got to know you from Second Thought's political analysis (some excellent work there), and I'll continue to watch your videos here. Looking forward to your next uploads. Great work!
This is so inspiring, thanks so much JT, I'm now absolutely convinced it's worth giving a go to a utube channel for me and you made me believe I can do it! A huge lot of useful tips for beginners too, great inspiration.
As someone who’s still working with a phone camera, thank you for this 🤌🏼 I like the Yeti X mic for desk footage and the Rode VideoMicro for on-the-go/secondary things
as a small time creator i honestly wish i knew more of this style stuff. but thank you very much for the advice! will use what i can with what sort of content i make.
Starting off with the big questions, eh JT? You really driving us into the hole at just the beginning of the video! The main reason why I decided to start a TH-cam channel was to share my creative thoughts in the form of a video journal with my audience as dumb as that sounds :"D I run another project called Embassy Life in DC, a project dedicated to international embassy and cultural events in the DC area! But my audience just follows me for that niche, and not much else. I wanted to expand into other avenues of life and creative content as well. Oh... If I could get monetized as well, even better! :D
Great video J.T! For anyone interested in music production livestreaming, I’ve found pretty good success with running my daw/computer audio from audio interface into a Roland aerocaster. It’s a pretty solid system for xlr audio with phone video, but downsides if you don’t have strong home WiFi, want to stream from console, and don’t have iPad (iPad required to work😞)
Been wanting to be a youtuber for years but my depression got in the way, then when i finally had the confidence,my ancient laptop had its final breath, been stuck on mobile since and with my mom as the only source of income for 6 people,7 when my sister comes over,i can't even get enough money for a camera, feels like i'm never gonna be a youtuber
good video! thanks for the tips definitely feels like every non bread tube genre of channels are all saturated lol i’m thinking of doing a music production and if i get good enough, i’m considering making videos on it. cheers to a creative 2024!
I never think I’m actually going to learn anything useful in these kind of videos but this is actually an amazingly useful resource. Came here because I know your principles and was not disappointed. You’re a real one. Maybe I’ll give videos another shot this year! Thanks for making this 🙏
Thanks a lot, i'm planing to start anarchistic yt channel in my native language, bcs most people in my country aren't educated in this area and you're making me more prepared and less anxious
Loved this -- as a 40+ year TV/media professional I can affirm all the sound technical advice! Our only channel intention (for the moment) is to have an openly accessible home for videos from our Quaker meeting. Only concern is what kind of inappropriate adverts the GooGopoly will pair with them (eg. propaganda defending the Gaza genocide would be right out). Probably an absurd question, but does the GooGopoly provide any filter controls for their ad content?
This has come at a perfect time for me! I plan to return to content creation after a very long hiatus, and I especially want to focus on TH-cam content that mixes gaming with education that counters western propaganda.
Ngl, I thought I wouldn’t like this channel but I really like the way these videos are done. You’ve really developed your style since I started watching in 2020 and I love what it has turned into. Great work man, you must be proud!
Thank you for this video! I want to improve my video editing skills because I want to upskill into a learning experience designer role from my current role as a systems administrator.
This sort of freely-given skillshare is going to be one of the foundations of successful socialism in the 21st century. Cooperation, not competition. The future belongs to people like us, JT - as long as people like you, me, most of your viewers and the other people who think like we do, do the work to make it happen. ✊️
I am currently working on a lot of stuff to start a channel about community & creating community within our current system and all the levels of how our society really works not just the surface level bs everyone else aspouses. Lol, i DO Need to change the world. If I don't I won't last much longer in this society honestly. Name: Apocalypse: Lifting the Veil Look for it starting in March lol
I appreciate this I need to go through and watch it again and take some notes on the things that I maybe need to get as I have a channel it’s just really small and I haven’t posted anything in over a year but I’m thinking I want to start it again . I’m just super ADHD and feel like I need a partner in crime to help keep me on track I have lots of great ideas but the technical stuff is not my forte.
Thank you! Your tips on lighting were really helpful. I was wondering if you have ever used a blue/green screen and if you have any tips for lighting with that? My band recently started a channel and I have been streaming myself producing music from old phone recordings and am looking to improve my lighting while having the blue screen so I can do the whole floating head thing.
I've been a videographer and editor for 16 years. I just decided to get serious about the 3 channels I have. I absolutely despise all the work I'd have to put in though for the quality aspect, so I shoot with a good camera I have on me enough, and make due with it's audio. I don't have access to my light set up. I'm not expecting to get anywhere or make any real money, but each channel has something to offer. Ironically my gaming one is the one that's most successful and I literally just take playback from my PS4 😂
Make a mission statement for yourself...I only have a mobile device...what if I choose to remain anonymous for personal reasons?...By the way, thank you for your instruction; it is so clear and precise...

You've always had such consistently great production quality; I'm not exactly planning on ever making a youtube channel, but I'm still probably going to watch all of your videos on this channel because of how well you present the information. Than and your voice is very soothing.
I started my channel in 2024 and this video was really inspiring and helpful.. Tnx 👍👍👍
Glad to be of service! Best of luck with your channel
I have a gut feeling that the next big wave of TH-cam growth is coming soon. The recent retirement of well known TH-camrs and surprising amount of small channels I’ve seen blow up recently gives me hope.
Really like your approach - good advice, organization, and personality!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching!
Bit by bit, we all work together to make the world a better place! @@JTChapman 💙
This is actually great. I actually just published my first video last week (more coming. I was overseas) and then I saw this. All good advice
JT thank you
As someone who’s still working with a phone camera, thank you for this 🤌🏼 I like the Yeti X mic for desk footage and the Rode VideoMicro for on-the-go/secondary things
Thank you JT
Thank you for watching!
Well! thanks for this video! even though I started my channel like a year, this will help me a lot for now on! thank you again and have a good day!
Glad to be of service!
Thank you so much for the lighting advice, I struggle so much getting it right
Lighting is the bane of my existence. Glad to help however I can!
as a small time creator i honestly wish i knew more of this style stuff. but thank you very much for the advice! will use what i can with what sort of content i make.
Thanks JT, following Steve McPerson's channel now, pretty good content!
Starting off with the big questions, eh JT? You really driving us into the hole at just the beginning of the video! The main reason why I decided to start a TH-cam channel was to share my creative thoughts in the form of a video journal with my audience as dumb as that sounds :"D
I run another project called Embassy Life in DC, a project dedicated to international embassy and cultural events in the DC area!
Plenty of people just use their phone! As long as you have a window with nice natural light, and ideally some kind of mic, you're golden
As a new TH-camr, this is literally the best video I have seen on how to deal with TH-cam. Thanks a lot! 🌟
So glad you found it helpful!
you are my hero
🥰
In a sea of ‘2024 start TH-cam’ guides, this is by far the best.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it
good video! thanks for the tips
definitely feels like every non bread tube genre of channels are all saturated lol
i’m thinking of doing a music production and if i get good enough, i’m considering making videos on it. cheers to a creative 2024!
Very cool education presentation
Production is grulling so rewarding
Thanks JT
Thanks for watching!
The adobe bit it was absolutely spot on and unexpected. But at the same time, completely expected once it happened 🤣
This has come at a perfect time for me! I plan to return to content creation after a very long hiatus, and I especially want to focus on TH-cam content that mixes gaming with education that counters western propaganda.
I really appreciate this video JT! I've wanted to start a YT channel myself for a while so thank you for provide the basic blueprints to starting.
Thank you so much for this!!
Glad to help! Thank you for watching
Ngl, I thought I wouldn’t like this channel but I really like the way these videos are done. You’ve really developed your style since I started watching in 2020 and I love what it has turned into. Great work man, you must be proud!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it
I subbed to both of your channels because of your "are we the baddies" video
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
Thank you for this video! I want to improve my video editing skills because I want to upskill into a learning experience designer role from my current role as a systems administrator.
It's funny bc I absolutely despise these videos but I was looking forward to your video lol. Stay real comrade. 🏴
This video has taught me so about [blank].
After about 18 years of contemplation, I've finally made a TH-cam channel and I'm currently working on the scripts!
JT you’re an incredible human ❤
That's very kind of you to say 🥰
This sort of freely-given skillshare is going to be one of the foundations of successful socialism in the 21st century. Cooperation, not competition.
The future belongs to people like us, JT - as long as people like you, me, most of your viewers and the other people who think like we do, do the work to make it happen.
✊️
I am currently working on a lot of stuff to start a channel about community & creating community within our current system and all the levels of how our society really works not just the surface level bs everyone else aspouses.
Lol, i DO Need to change the world. If I don't I won't last much longer in this society honestly.
Name: Apocalypse: Lifting the Veil
Look for it starting in March lol
This is great stuff. Thank you!
we need a video that tells us how to watch youtube properly aswell.
gooo jt
🥰
This was great, thanks JT! Super useful info for someone who doesn't know a lick about nothin when it comes to creating a channel
Hold your breath and go touch grass 😂 now that part got meeeee!
I appreciate this I need to go through and watch it again and take some notes on the things that I maybe need to get as I have a channel it’s just really small and I haven’t posted anything in over a year but I’m thinking I want to start it again . I’m just super ADHD and feel like I need a partner in crime to help keep me on track I have lots of great ideas but the technical stuff is not my forte.
this was unbelievably well done
Thanks very much! So glad you liked it
thank you JT :) you’re my favorite
Am not gonna start a TH-cam channel but am still watching ❤
Thanks for your support!
Thank you so much for this!
