Hey guys. Had a lot of fun doing this tune. I made some changes to the tab to suit how I would play the song unlike most videos on this page.
In the intro, Wendy is playing an Fadd9.

I choose to play an F chord because I can’t physically stretch my pinky that far in the first position. Fingers aren’t long and skinny enough. Props to those who can pull it off because that’s a tough one..
I chose a standard strumming pattern for the rhythm parts. Because I realize that there are those looking to memorize how to play the song so I wanted to make it playable.
For the distorted prince parts, its hard to make out what he is playing. His tone is distorted and fuzzy, and low in the mix, it played with my head when trying to get it all in there. So I took some liberties. I got all the licks in there. Just with all the sliding and string muting, it’s hard to get all that in there.
I tabbed out a saxophone part.
I decided to tab out the outro vocal melody.
All in an effort to make the song enjoyable to play. Hope you enjoy the video!

@@elefantemortal3704 yes. I didnt come here to learn some bs version. I never go to any guitar tutorial to learn anything but the real version. I think its more than just 2 things too. But even the one ender chord thats like a 5 fret stretch is vital. Other chord doesnt even sound close. Not to mention its a really cool sounding chord and comes at the end of.the riff so very important

This is one of the best rock/pop songs of all time with arguably the most underrated guitar solos of all time. Still gives me chills every time I hear it.
The emotion in the solo is unreal whether a Prince fan or not.

As much of an eccentric person Prince was, he was a highly underrated guitarist. excellent cover, outfit, and guitar!!!!
This is arguably the most underrated guitar solo of all time. It is so damn good.

Well yes, but the eccentricity is what made him great to me.. And interesting.. Most highly creative ppl are different.. I knew a few engineers, and boy you gotta get used to their personality!! I'm a musician/ guitarist myself, and you can't live in the world of boring old normal ppl to come up with awesome ideas!! Einstein was eccentric too as well!!
i dont think hes underrated at all. i think anyone who actually listens to Prince can appreciate how good the guy was.

DAMN I have to say!! I am BLOWN AWAY. There is not a single other cover of this solo that actually plays it like prince did in the recording. This is as close as it gets! FANTASTIC! I can't get over it!! I mean it's not 100%, but 100% is impossible cuz you can't really hear what he is playing in some parts on the record. And he has to my knowledge never played the studio version solo live? But still, this is as close and great as it gets!!!!!!

Fantastic lesson. You've made it so much easier to learn the notes, strumming, timing and muting. And, Wendy Melvoin's freaky finger chord aside, everything sounded pretty damn close to perfect - at least to my ears and I must have listened to this song/air guitared to the solo hundreds of times. The original & the cover !!
I went to the dump last week and there was an Aria Classical guitar from 1978 siting there in a case with the bridge (still attached to the strings) sitting in the sound hole.
The glue let go in a very clean break.
I did some sanding and put the bridge back in place. I got some Labella flamenco strings and tied them on.
This is what it's telling me to play. I've gotten most of it down so far and it sounds spectacular. Soon I'll record and fire up one of my electric guitars and put the pieces together.
One man's trash is another person's treasure.

This is extremely helpful. Thanks! This song is not easy to learn by ear or from tabs because there is so much atmosphere. It's difficult for the ear to pick out the important parts worth playing.

I know you said you altered a few things to make this song easier and possibly more enjoyable to play for those who are learning this one for the first time; You know, whatever works to make it great and a pleasurable learning experience, I'm good with it! I think it sounds great, and like you, I have a little trouble with those long finger stretches (and I do have reasonable long fingers!), so again, whatever works well! Your tone is great, your costume and background is great, and the guitar is amazing, too! You make lessons so much fun and so entertaining, so let me say "thank you so much for all the effort you put into these videos!" I never considered adding this one to my repertoire before, but Prince was a genius songwriter and musician, so truly, this was one of his finest moments! What a fantastic song from his vast library of hits to learn and enjoy! 😊👍👍🎸🎶✨
