How the Michelin Star Guide got it so wrong in Vancouver!

  • Vancouver is an amazing place with great places to visit and even better places to eat! Really love this city; born and raised here and hope you get a chance to visit. It was a nice surprise when the Michelin Star Guide decided to cover Vancouver, but I think the folks there got a few places wrong... Luckily and in my opinion, they were errors of exclusion rather than errors of inclusion.
I hope to correct these wrongs and the best way I know how, is to do it in person and with some friends! Really grateful that you can join as we explore some of Vancouver's finest places from the delicious seafoods to the warm and comforting Vietnamese Bone Marrow Pho, which I think is the best I've ever had.
Join me as we explore Vancouver Best Happy Hour spot at the @fannybayoystersoysterbar2472 with oysters and wine and caviar... then we can enjoy a a warm and comforting bowl of Pho along with a massive fragrant Chicken Rice; a Vietnamese speciality from the great folks at Linh Cafe
Thank you so much for joining and here are a few helpful links.

It’s really nice to see that you’re pointing out exclusions versus criticizing the inclusions. Nice to have a positive spin on our Michelin guide. I hope that they will recognize a lot more really awesome restaurants we have!

Went to Fanny Bay Oyster Bar for happy hour, last Wednesday. I had the mussels & clams, with West Coast IPA. The flavors were excellent and I really enjoyed that afternoon. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you for recommending this place. The Pho is very good but the beef brisket is very fatty. Enjoyed the escargot and the patey banh mi. Beautiful restaurant and the service was excellent.

With the exception of Michelin Bib Gourmand, in order to have an actual star with Michelin, it seems like it's not the food that matters but whether your portions are small and appealing to the eye and whether you use foam and at the same time have a good wine list.

The point of Michelin isn’t necessarily restaurants that have great tasting food. The point of it is to see which restaurants are pushing the boundaries and evolving cuisine rather than sticking to tradition.

I also thought Michelin got it wrong and would have been happy if your choices made it in. I also thought Straight and Marrow should have had a nod. And more Cantonese food, but it has to be right in the city, so maybe Chef's Choice or Sun Sui Wah as a place that has been doing good dim sum for ages.

I hope I can trouble you with a few questions as I am a big food nerd: 1) What is the condiment in the gravy boat seen at 17:43? Did it come with the chicken rice as a condiment specifically for it? Also, I noticed they brought out other gravy boats with condiments with the chicken rice - what were they if you recall? 2) Are their pho noodles fresh or dried if you recall? If fresh, do they make them in-house?

Linh Cafe was OK. I live in Mac Donalds & W. 4th Ave. They started in that small area near the corner. That used to be a French cafe/restaurant. I forgot the name of the original French cafe. That one was fantastic. The father had the original cafe in West Vancouver and helped the son to establish the one in Kits. Unfortunately, that French cafe closed because the son can't find a steady staff to work. Then Linh cafe took over and bought the business. The chef initially copied the original menu but unsuccessful. He was good but I wouldn't say extra-ordinary. They started to have many following hence they moved to a bigger place. Again, the Michelin Star category is also innovation and among others. I actually started to go to some of the list from MS and I can say it's pretty accurate. Lunch Lady in Commercial Dr. was impressive. Also, to each his own and it's just my opinion and just sharing some back story how Linh Cafe started. I like to ask the chef/owner and connect the story behind the restaurant. I would like to come back to Linh Cafe in the future.

i believe a restaurants needs to be part of destination vancouver in order to be considered for review by michelin guide. I can't say 100%, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. Michelin gets paid by each city to review the city. Can't buy stars, but can pay Michelin to come to the city.
