Dan was a cool guy in high school. He rode a Harley Sportster, played guitar and sang Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo during the school's talent show. He was huge, but soft-spoken, humble and smart. Class of '75, Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville, Ark. Go Red Devils!

Hampton is one of those guys you had to watch every week to understand just how f***in dominant he truly was. Noone really talks about him in the national sports media, but, as someone who watched him every week during his career, he was the real anchor of that defense. This man was so damn strong and so determined. I think he ought to be the first name mentioned when people talk about the '85 Bears defense. Thanks for all the fun times Danimal!

    • @liamg2271

100% correct. This man was a freaking badass and HAD to be doubled. Hampton opened up everything for the Bears 85 defense. As great as Dent, Singletary, and the entire front 7 was Hampton was the key. Just a tremendous, tremendous, football player.

Agree. He was a beast out there. The Bears defense was still dominant for years after 1985 but they needed excellent QB play through the playoffs. McMahon being body slammed in 1986 was huge & paved the way for the ‘86 Giants. But I still remember the Bears defense as late as 1988 being just as effective as ever. Even after that it was never a walk in the park for offenses. I love the video of Singletary talking about someone needing to knock out the young Packers QB in 1992, Brett Favre!!

Had they not taken their starters out and kept going at it, it would have been three straight shutouts. Greatest defense and team by far.

I watched Walters career as a kid and again mostly through TH-cam as well as the defense from around 76' to 85'. Payton and that defense are the greatest of all time. All those years I could not see anyone more of a complete football player than Payton. I cannot see any defense including the Steelers EVER do what what they did and not just in 85'. One of the few great teams in history that knew how great they were in the moment, and enjoyed it which is a blessing. So many reflect back and "Wish" they enjoyed the moment, that team enjoyed the moment. Shame they didn't win the appropriate number of championships... All because they had what Jimmy and Jerry had in Dallas, leaders with huge Ego that had to get all the credit.... That's what ultimately made the Patriots a long lasting dynasty, Kraft was humble enough to stay out of the way, even though he was/is one of the top 5 owners in sports history. This is coming from a Dolphin fan, so not biased, just honest opinions.

Can't say that the Bears defense was ultimately better than the Steel Curtain because of how long that defense was dominant for, but you can definitely make the case that the best single season defense should go to the '85 Bears! They allowed only 10 points in their 3 playoff games and even Bill Parcells himself said that was the best defense he ever faced and he's the kind of guy that exaggerate things!

    • @TheDCGuitar13

Joseph Harris bill parcells never faced the 2000 ravens. If you wanna talk longevity on defense how bout 2000-2012. Sure there were a couple of off seasons because of offense but from a sustained perspective they were always in the mix and until the year they won the Super Bowl the second time ironically they were always top 10 usually top 5. Honestly they’re still not bad just get injured when it matters sadly.

Matt Beeman the ravens were a DOMINANT D from 2000 to 2012 man. Who had a top ten d for that long? It’s clear that team philosophy is key. Heck the last couple years they became dominant again. No matter who’s playing or coaching they put a dominant defense on the field. That’s a REAL defensive culture. Buddy took that culture to philly and the bears floundered.

Bears were top 5 in total defense through 79,80,83,84, and 85. All but one of those years they ranked in the top 3 statistically. They were so dominant in 1985 people seem to sleep on the fact the Bears had a great defense for close to a decade. Their rush defense was consistent throughout the 80s. It was their pass defense that staggered.

85 Bears were the best team in franchise history but not NFL history. A one hit wonder like the Bears Shuffle song,, they were a supernova not meant to last. Losing Buddy the following season to Philadelphia was the biggest blow to this team’s chances of becoming a dynasty in the league. Ditka was not as loved as Buddy was, and his coaching record after he did not have Buddy as D coordinator is an indication of that.

Had ARGUABLY The Best Running Back, The Best Defensive End of his time,(Dent) an INCREDIBLE DEFENSIVE COACH(The Buddster)......AND DEFENSE.......Linebackers to a MAN that would KNOCK YOU INTO NEXT WEEK. (Singletary&Co.)
A FULL-BLOWN RADICAL QUATERBACK(JimMcmahon) A MASCOT WHO ACTUALLY PLAYED ON DEFENSE AND OFFENSE.....(Fridge)
TRULY THE BEST COLLECTION OF "CHARACTERS" IN HISTORY......

Depends on who's rules they play by. If they play by the '85 season's rules, sure they win, but if they play by current NFL rules they don't because it negates their defense and it's physicality for intimidation. It's a totally different game today, defenses have largely been de-fanged and the running game is much less of a factor.

I agree ..I have watched the NFL since 1981 and the Defense was the BEST but the offense was average at best and the 84/85 49ers would win in Frisco but lose in Chi-Town ...fact ! Neutral site .....49ers protect Joe ....Niners win by 10 ....they were amazing for one year but Giants /Skins/49ERS took over the next yr ...so they couldn't be that GOOD .....Pitt in the 70s ...Dallas in the 70s ...Niners in 89/90 were better but for one yr ...Da Bears owned the world and should've gone 16-0 and then 3-0 in playoffs but came close ...the one weakness was QB ...and Payton was getting old and Fridge helped in on the 3yd line TD .....but I enjoyed watching every minute and I still remember in college watching Miami beat them ...lol...but boy they were great on D but like I said ...the best TEAM .....Niners in 84/85 ....total package !
