I haven't used my 707 much for sampling tho, just been focusing on the synths lately. Hope you can make more of these series, it gave me a few ideas. I think most people focus on the synth engine when reviewing this unit, instead of showing the sampling capabilities of this device.
Thanks for covering the MC-707. Please do more of them. I don't have a ton of time I can devote to playing on it but I do have lots of time for stuff like this.
THE MOST comprehensive and practical explanation of sample chopping I’ve ever heard!🤜🏽 but that guitar sample was begging for a minimalistic lofi kick and rim at a slower tempo-just my 12 pence🤷🏽♂️
This is great. I thought I knew the 707 pretty damn well, and now I have a whole new way to approach my next live set. Well done, nice chops, I really enjoyed these.
Would love to see the steps leading up to this.. where do you get the sounds from, what is your thought process when you are collecting them.. how do you organize them, decide which sounds to pull on to each device (are some better suited for different genres?)
Couldn't you use the normalize function on the samples to adjust the volume thus freeing up your MFX send for other stuff? Not in front of my 707 right now to check, but seem to remember this being the case. Glad to see more 707 on the channel! ^^
This was definitely the big piece missing for me messing with the MC for the last few days! Thanks for the video Jeremy! Wild to see those same folders on here haha
CHOP! CHOP! Let's get going! Somebody had to do it. And just a quick theory about why the preview is so much louder than what you get on the pads. Since the pads a touch sensitive, they might be quantizing the volume over the touch range of the pad?
Have you understood how the "scene chains" function works? I did not understand whether it is possible to save a scene as a set of clips and then call them in a chain without specifying the next clip number inside the clip.
Quick question: how/where do I build a library of (longer) samples? (bits of vinyl -- a bit like the library you use in your video to start with. I would like to build a library of parts of songs (from my vinyls), that later on I can upload into projects to chop/play with. The problem is that I don't know where to start. For example, how do I save these (bits of songs; say, between 10 and 30 seconds, perhaps even longer) so that they belong to a general sample library and not a single project? I know how to record them, but I just don't understand where they end up being saved and how to re-access them. Help super welcomed!
Thoughts on chop-based sampler hardware/software? I tried but could not get into the MPC1000 workflow (even with jjos). MC-707 seems nice, but pricey. Ableton is always an option (but sometimes gives you too many options). I've actually been intrigued a lot by the Serato Studio dealie because it strips so much away to focus on beatmaking and makes arrangement quick.
Gotta say that my favorite workflow for sampling is on the machine. Own both the machine, mc707 and push 2, and I still always end up on the maschine when I wanna play around with samples. You could however get really wild and creative with some LFOs on Ableton sampler/simpler
If your into sample chopping check out the MPC one, you can chop samples on the fly as the sample plays by hitting the pads when you want the next chop to start. Mind blowing and easy.
Is there an easy way to manually set slice points while playing back the sample? I think im picking one up. I just cant shake the feeling the mpc one is a ‘better value’, just the focus on the screen on that is a big turn-off.
I actually have a question: you said that when slicing you should look for chord changes. Do you mean chord changes within the slice, or one slice would be one chord, and another slice would be a different chord? I realize this might be a dumb question, but i'm going to brave it since i'm sure this won't be on the internet forever.
curious to where you got your break beat drum samples? would love to chop those same breaks up if you could link me. haven't found a good source for breaks yet
Oh damn i didnt even know this machine existed its like an mpc but has synths etc too right ? looks like a pretty easy unit to use as well for sampling/chopping and sequencing. Any major downsides to this unit compared to say an mpc ?
This somehow passed me by too but I ended up getting one and am loving it. It's a hybrid of MPC and Electribe workflow, also works great to sequence external gear. They've added a few great features that were missing when it was released.
@@RedMeansRecording I've tested one a while ago and your right. The Hydra is a DREAM for Sound-designing! But I want to keep my setup small:Just One Synthesizer , Groovebox , Sampler and Drummachine , thats enough.and my beloved xd looks kinda angry , while I'm writing to you
Heard you mention you got layed off. Sorry to hear it man...was it due to the covid? Are you doing ok? Is the TH-cam bringing you a stable income or are you actively looking for more work?
I feel like this was an hour long video that got weirdly chopped itself because there are jumps that happen that seem like are missing information. Like how did you suddenly get from the “there are too many vocal chops” near the end of the video to the kick drum pattern that happens next. Bizarre.
Basically it means the sounds won't bleed into eachother, once a second pad/note/sound is played it stops the first. Not sure how well I've explained it but hopefully it helps 😊
On my DAW it would be called poly as in polyphony, you set to 1 and then 2 can't play simultaneously. Except that would include the whole instrument or sample group, here he seemed to apply it to every one which seems a bit long winded. I know this question is a year old but that's my 2 cents lol
your videos are like when you just wake up on a weekend and you're all warm and cozy in your blanket and you just lay there and enjoy the feeling

A nice man said a bunch of things I didn't really understand, then he made awesome sounds that made my brain happy.

Love how you show what’s possible. I’m not a musician but I love your easy to comprehend explanations of how you work. Best on YT
chops for days! thanks for introducing me to this fine machine
dope.. I was just missing my old SP-404, then thanks to your video I realised the 707 right in front of my face can chop just grandly. Well done!
the melody from 9:23.. wow, the harmony at the end of the melody. excellent chopping
This might just be what I needed. Always kinda discarded it as a hiphop only thing, but this video convinced me I could start to like this..
I just got one last week so keep these tips coming Jeremy!
This is a truly amazing machine
Great video man ❤️
Quick tip...
To add gain to a track use EQ input gain 👌
I was literally just looking for a quality tutorial you are insanse
Mine arrived this weekend.
This is great. I thought I knew the 707 pretty damn well, and now I have a whole new way to approach my next live set. Well done, nice chops, I really enjoyed these.
Big MC707 fan ✌️ Dope chopping 🔪

Thank you! Very useful tips
You make it look so easy, lol. Thanks.

Or one could go the way of resampling, but that might eat up valuable sample memory if you don't clear the original sample from the project
@RGTD i was thinking the same

Had to like as soon as that beat dropped
Thanks for the video. I’ve been neglecting the sampler feature on my MC-707
This was really helpful, Jeremy, looking forward to part II!
This was definitely the big piece missing for me messing with the MC for the last few days! Thanks for the video Jeremy! Wild to see those same folders on here haha
So good as usual, and just what I needed as I was wanting to do more with the MC-707. Thanks so much!
love the guitar samples =) Sounds like brazil
Awesome video Red! 👊🏻☕️ I haven’t started messing around with my 707 yet, but I’m really excited. Soon!

Ah maybe!
Perfect timing, thanks!
Wonderful inspirational stuff as always
Ugh my MC707 is also arriving today 🥳🥰🤓
wow please do more!!!
Awesome tutorial!
Seems like the MC707 can basically be used as a sampler. Kind of cool.
very very good demo , thanks
I wonder if the clips are quieter than previews because of velocity mapping?
Bro I never knew the 707 choppin was that intuitive….man I was about to buy an mpc🤦🏿♂️
Hi! Great video! Do you have your pads setup at a fixed velocity (if so, at what volume?).
So just to clarify, you CAN manually adjust the start and end points of each chop (like on MPC)?
Have you understood how the "scene chains" function works? I did not understand whether it is possible to save a scene as a set of clips and then call them in a chain without specifying the next clip number inside the clip.
Can you lazy chop like in the Akai MPC and Force ?
4:16
Question: any way to chop up audio coming in from the external input? I'd love to just plug in a phone and youtube dig on the fly
Where do you stand on copyright when chopping?
Ask for forgiveness, not permission
@@RedMeansRecording LOL!
I had this question too!

Is that the only way to fix the quiet factor of this thing? Even all the factory presets are super quite on mine.
can you extratct stems from a sample on either this or another sampler?
Woo!

BTW, with the Maschine+ coming out now you will see alot of cheap maschine mk3's on the market, so might look into that :)
Can it do good stutters?
Great.

Jeremy, did you try using wavetables? Does that work on this? Is there variable envelope/sample points? If that makes sense....
Can I connect my Laptop to the Mc 707 via USB midi hub so I can send music to make chopps
When I have to choose. Deluge or mc707?
Your voice sounds exactly like that Seth guy in House of Cards
I actually have a question: you said that when slicing you should look for chord changes. Do you mean chord changes within the slice, or one slice would be one chord, and another slice would be a different chord? I realize this might be a dumb question, but i'm going to brave it since i'm sure this won't be on the internet forever.
it depends on how you want to play them back and the structure of the thing you're chopping! try both!
Wouldn't it be a creativity hub it having stem separation from recording nowadays?
curious to where you got your break beat drum samples? would love to chop those same breaks up if you could link me. haven't found a good source for breaks yet
Search for "all the beaks samples" on googs

can we get sofa cat more in frame from next time pleeease

Dope beat!
can you use that in mashine daw? also does it have midi output.
yes it has midi output
There's no time stretching on the 707?
Yes there is!
can 707 record through audio input?
Yes

A chop is how college kids in California justify a nicotine addiction by pairing it with their weed habits ;)
Didn’t really understand the mute group concept.
