    In this guitar lesson, we look at how to play 'Sound of Silence' by Simon and Garfunkel. This is a beautiful song, and the only tricky chord is the F chord really.
    The main focus here is to be able to follow a chord sheet that doesn't have barre lines on it by follow the words of the song, using the prompts on screen to help.
    We then look at the full fingerstyle intro, which play throughout all of verse 1. Get more help with learning fingerstyle here ▶ www.andyguitar.co.uk/courses/...

    There's an interesting story to this song, and it's not what most people think. Paul wrote this in the family bathroom as it had amazing acoustics and the reference to darkness my old friend is because it was windowless.... He talked about it in an interview.

      That's kind of disappointing tbh. Sometimes a song's background and meaning is best left to imagination.

    Why do the bars sometimes accelerate? I would have expect there to always be the same number of beat per bar, and maybe have multiples chords when the changes are fast. Like a 4:15 :
    | F (super fast) | C |
    why not instead
    | F C |

    • @andycrowley
      @andycrowley  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of the bars in this song are 2:4, two beats to the bar. Google the guotar Pro tab for it (or maybe it's linked in the description?) That's what I'm following 👍

      Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately I can't do that at this time. My signature beginner acoustic is a limited run, there's 200 left, they're in the UK only and when they're sold out, there won't be any more made. You can buy one here and we will deliver it to India and most other countries in the world shop.andyguitar.co.uk/products/andys-signature-acoustic-guitar-brunswick-agf200

  • @navyjax2
    @navyjax2 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Saying what finger to use over the hole doesn’t help, because I struggle with what fingers go with which strings, because there’s 6 strings and you only have 5 fingers.
    Then those chord pattern diagrams don’t help that much because they ought to be turned on their side, so we can orient our fingers against the strings appropriately. I have no idea if the left side is the top or bottom of the fret board. And then, again, which finger is supposed to be on which string?
    Then, strumming pattern: supposedly it’s down, down, up, but this is false because you can’t go down twice in a row. You are actually just going down & back up & then down again & back up. But then when you shift to using fingers on the strings over the hole, the whole strumming thing goes completely out the window: you’re saying to use specific fingers on specific strings in specific patterns (“index, ring, index, ring”, “thumb, index, middle, 4”) but, again, finger usage doesn’t say which strings to pluck. And people like to number them-that doesn’t help me. How about top, next to top, middle-top, middle-bottom, next to bottom, bottom? Would be a hell of a lot easier.
    When doing that F, what does that line across all of the strings mean? It’s not to hold them all down, because I didn’t see you doing that! You do F and Am like a pyramid, and that’s not at all how it shows on the diagram.
    Inside-out? The name doesn’t say anything about what it’s actually about… So lost…

    • @andycrowley
      @andycrowley  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To answer your questions;
      1. Thumb generally plays strings 4 5 and 6, index plays string 3, middle string 2 and ring finger string 1 - This is called The Orthodox style, though this rule can be broken anytime to play whatever the song requires.
      2. Chord diagrams are written vertically, so left and right-handed players can read them equally well without preference to either. It's easy once you know what you're looking at.
      3. The line across the chord diagram on the F shows a barre with the first finger, which holds down the strings at in this case fret 1.
      Hope that helps, all the best. Keep playing, and I promise you'll achieve all your music goals if you just keep playing and moving forward! 🙌
