Hey Everyone! If you are having any trouble getting the Sheet Music and Tux Guitar files (most people don't), please email me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and I will send it to you directly!!
I love how simple you have made this. I tried to learn from someone that wanted me to play Barry Manalo music back in the late 70's. It was not my style so I quit after a few months. Now I want to learn along with my granddaughter. You have just made this possible without needing to take lessons from multiple teachers since I live in Ohio and Florida. Thank you for your help.
Hey Rick, great to hear from you and thank you for taking the lesson here. Yes, this is as simple as I could make it without disturbing the song (actually it's even a little bit more musical than standard stock chords). Amazing how the choices and the simplicity can open up with fingerpicking. Most of the students here are our age and up so expect more songs from this era (simple of course). If you need any help or just want to let me know how it's going, please don't hesitate. I'll answer and help in Ohio and Florida. Wishing you a happy guitar weekend!! bob
Hi Edd Ted, many thanks again and glad you found my channel! Yes Yes Yes... that is the goal here. Most if not all the lessons on TH-cam when teaching a particular song will only show the way it goes by the artist who played it. That's fine but it leaves so many people out that are not as advanced yet. I just want people to play their guitar- like right now. Hope you have fun with this song- big THANKS to you Edd!! bob
Hi Catalina, I'm so happy that you watch my videos- I wish I could make them quicker and put out more but I work as a musician full time and the teaching is a hobby (but I love it). God Bless you too and hope your teaching is going well. Happy weekend!! bob

From Australia , loved your lesson from a 68 year old chord strummer, love learning new things that hopefully I can attempt to play without to much trouble such a great instrument , thank you from down under.
Hey George, great to see you here and thank you for taking the lesson with me! I know you can do this, slow and steady wins the race. I like to take things in small sections and then piece it all together. Happy to have you here and if you need any help, please let me know.. Happy pickin' !! bob
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen for a beginner. Very well explained, not too fast, didn’t leave me wondering about anything. Just gotta grab my guitar and give it a try. Thank you
Hi Alagie Saine , wow, you are very nice- thank you for the kind words.. !! And I hope you are able to play some (or all of this!) Happy guitar weekend and wishing you the best!! bob
Great song! I always appreciate your efforts to simplify things for newer players like myself. The lessons really have made a big difference for me. Thanks Bob.
Hi Pam, great to hear from you and hope all is well. I think I just got lucky- most cover songs don't work out as well as this one did.. Wishing you a happy weekend!!!
I am so hooked on watching your videos and learning. Now I got my grandson watching you and he doesn't play guitar. He came over and picked up my guitar and started practicing it. Thank you He is 13 and I am trying to get him to get into music instead of always playing video games.
Wow, Yudi, so nice of you to comment here again! I'm glad the videos are helping you.. that is my #1 goal! It would be so great to have your Grandson playing- he's certainly not too young and it's a lot better than playing video games. I'm here if either of you need any coaching.. many thanks again!! bob
If you have been playing for a few months (or even a while) and want to learn how to fingerpick the Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, you might have been taken back at the complexity of this song and decided to give up. Firstly- most if not all the lessons on TH-cam require full chords (even the beginner hostile F barre chord) along with multiple picking patterns that are as confusing as Chinese Algebra. But in this lesson and arrangement, I have taken out all the difficult chords, as all that's needed at most are a few 2 fingered chords, along with a couple of 1 fingered chords and even a 0 (zero) finger chord (that's right, no pressing anything on the fretboard). And if that wasn't simple enough, only 2 fingers are needed on the right hand. But the right hand gets even easier as two of the strings we pluck for every chord doesn't change throughout the entire song (only the bass note strings change). All this easily makes this fingerstyle arrangement of The Sound of Silence simply the easiest on the internet. Now I know you are probably thinking.... "this is probably going to sound like" a kindergarten nursery rhyme, right?" Well, that's a big NO, as these chords actually introduce some more melodic sophistication to Sound of Silence that is totally in the spirit and tonal center of the song. Please try this easy version, not only because it sounds good but now people who are not as advanced (yet!) on the guitar can play this song. Do get the free sheet music and tux guitar files here: acousticguitarvideos.com/8402/sound-of-silence-easiest-fingerpicking-for-beginners/

One of my all time favorite songs!! So looking forward to sitting down with my guitar later tonight to get deep into learning! You truly are the best Bob!

Recently begun playing my guitar again after a long break due to chronic health problems, one which was causing a lot of pain in my hands, so I'm very rusty! This is a great way to ease back in without the frustration & embarrassment!
Hey Stevie-Ray, great to hear from you and glad you are feeling better and back on the guitar. Yea, this is a good song to "ease in" with for sure. Wishing you more guitar and smooth sailing! bob

This is superb my friend. I've been looking for a simple version of the intro and the melody for some considerable time. You've nailed the lot and your tutorial style is extremely engaging. 💥👊👍
Hey Tune a Mayo (love that name!) , great to hear from you and thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad to hear that this song was a good intro for you to play fingerstyle- it just so happens that this was all laid out and easier to play with just a few mods. I'm hoping you will keep going with the fingerstyle and if you e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com, I will send you my foundational lessons to fingerstyle which are currently free to everyone in my guitar group. Left the Guitasr for the Uke as I just could not get my fingers to do the chords - love the Uke and was learning this song for the Uke when I saw your video for the Guitar - dusted off the Guitar and now loving my guitar all over again :- ) Thank you
Hey Nick, thank you for taking the lesson here and glad you found my channel! Yes, the Uke is easier, but what you will find is the time spent on the Uke feeds right into the guitar as well. For just one example, the G chord position on the Uke is the same position as the D chord on guitar. One other cool thing is with fingerpicking, we don't have to always form full chords to play songs-this is the approach we start with (ease into the chords). I think it's too cool to be able to play multiple instruments!!!! If you need any help or direction, please let me know. I'm hands on here with everyone. Happy guitar and uke pickin' !! bob
Hey RampartFive, ha ha... I figured instead of saying what I wanted to say in the intro I would sing it... This was as easy as I could make it- I'm so glad you will give this a try. Let me know if you need any help okay... Happy pickin' weekend!!

Hey Johnnie, great to hear from you and thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you are working on this song- it's a good one. Have a great guitar week and thanks again! bob
Hello Bob Nice choice, it's a real challenge to play this song. You did a masterpiece of simplification and facilitation. However, I had a big problem with the TG files: no sound was coming out. I uninstalled and reinstalled TG 1.3.2 and even 1.5.5. Nothing to do. After a few hours, I found a trick: "Go to Tools -> Settings . A new window with TexGuitar settings opens. Find the Sound section and change the MIDI port to Gervill: Close the Settings window and check that everything works fine." It worked. This may be useful for others perhaps...😊
Hi Lishavi, you are a genius!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...!!! 3 other people had this problem as well and I just sent them out your info! One reported that it worked AND I am waiting back from the others (but confident!). What confounds me is I had other people that wrote in and said they are working with the tux guitar program and just said "thank you" ..? So it seems to be an isolated preference issue that I have no control over. I did send the files out as Gervill so somehow it got changed in the delivery (maybe google drive did that, I don't know..). In any regard, I can't thank you enough for your help!!! One more thing... THANK YOU!!! (ha ha).. bob

Hey Charles, really great to meet you here and wishing you all the best with the picking. When I first heard this song (guessing about 1967 (wow, that's such a long time ago LOL) I thought that guitar playing was impossible (remember trying it and didn't have a clue). But it didn't help that I didn't know what a capo was (makes this all possible in that original key). Thanks again and wishing you lots of good music on your guitar!!

Hey again Jewel, it's great to have you here and it sounds to me that you got the guitar fever (which is actually healthy for you!). Glad you are checking out the videos here!!! bob
Slowly getting this one down Bob. I'm a rock solid beginner so here goes with a beginners tip. First one is if it all seems a bit hard, take a break and come back to it. I promise each break you take it'll be easier the next time. Next, and seems especially so with this song, is if you're searching for the next "gear change," let"s say a G6 to a Asus for example, simply keep playing the G6 and pause the singing until you find the Asus. With practice you won't need to pause the Vocals. Does that make sense?
Hey Rog, you must be reading out of my playbook! In the last video I did (8 tips to changing chords), taking a break was #1 on the list... so now you are confirming it. I know that the brain has to digest things and many times pushing on is counter productive. You're also taking things in sections which is the right thing to do. It's like making a cake- it's one ingredient at a time kind of thing which makes perfect sense to me! Keep on doing what you are doing... you are really making so much headway- you are amazing!!
Hey TS, thank you ... very nice of you to say..!! However, if we met, I'd probably want to be more like you... Wishing both or us a great guitar weekend (thanks again,, hope the lesson was easy enough)!! bob
Hey Camp Land , thank you for taking the lesson here and glad you got a laugh out of the opening. We could always use some laughs these days. Good luck with this song and happy pickin' !! bob

Hi Maria, yes yes, the capo. You can still play this song without a capo but it may be too low for you to sing.. Capos are cheap and the easy way of changing keys without having to relearn the song with different chords. Many thanks Maria and hope you have a great Sunday!! bob
Thanks for your reply Bob. I am seventy years old, took up guitar three years ago and just love it.
"this is probably going to sound like" a kindergarten nursery rhyme, right?"
Well, that's a big NO, as these chords actually introduce some more melodic sophistication to Sound of Silence that is totally in the spirit and tonal center of the song.
Please try this easy version, not only because it sounds good but now people who are not as advanced (yet!) on the guitar can play this song.

Hey Tune a Mayo (love that name!) , great to hear from you and thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad to hear that this song was a good intro for you to play fingerstyle- it just so happens that this was all laid out and easier to play with just a few mods. Hi Patrice, thank you and great to hear from you- glad we are still here (and my Taylor guitar)
Happy guitar weekend to you!!!

Thank you Bob! Even my ol concrete block fingers might be able to play this... we'll see. You make it all look easy. Love the intro by the way.

Hello Bob
Nice choice, it's a real challenge to play this song. You did a masterpiece of simplification and facilitation.
However, I had a big problem with the TG files: no sound was coming out. I uninstalled and reinstalled TG 1.3.2 and even 1.5.5. Nothing to do.
After a few hours, I found a trick:
"Go to Tools -> Settings . A new window with TexGuitar settings opens. Find the Sound section and change the MIDI port to Gervill: Close the Settings window and check that everything works fine."
It worked.
(ha ha)..
bob

What a great lesson! Thank you very much. 👍👍👍
Hey Seamus, so glad the lesson helped!!!
Wishing you a great guitar weekend!!
Hi Bob thanks so much for this. I love Paul Simons songs. This will keep me busy for a while

Hi again Angela, I heard about that "rockumentary" but have never seen it. This was the first song that really drew me into Paul Simon. I'll have to check out Starz (I think we get that)... Hoping you will give this one a try, but if you aren't up to speed yet, stay on the Fingerpicking For Beginners Series for a while (13 lessons there).. Happy pickin' !! bob
This was heart-warming... ❤️
Hey Tomy, great to hear from you and glad you liked the lesson. Wishing you well on this!!
