This is the song that changed my whole life! I'm Japanese and heard this song first when I was in high school. I got so interested in the lyrics of this song and started to study English. Now I'm over 60 and have been teaching how to speak English to Japanese for over 30 years. Thank you S&G. You are my eternal heroes!!!
I heard this first in high school also. My friend and I just looked at each other, and said “wow.” Many years later, my wife and went to this concert in Central Park, NYC.
When this song was at its height, my sister was 19 years old, dying from cancer. I was 17, and left school to spend a dreary winter with her in a Chicago hospital where they were doing experimental chemo. Late night, we'd order a pizza to be delivered to the ER in the basement, because nobody was allowed on the 8th floor cancer ward that late. We'd ride the elevator down and back, harmonizing this song together. She died too soon after that. I'm in my 70s now, but when I hear this song, I'm 17, in an elevator with great acoustics, holding a pizza, and singing my heart out with my best friend.
Your memories made me want to connect through this, I take it that your beloved sister has been gone for over 50 years now as you're in your 70's now. I lost my only brother two years ago, he was 57 and much older than your sister was, I'm still wondering how it will feel for me to be older than he was, is that something that you ticked off as the years went by, the things you expected to learn from your sister that could never be about getting older. I find that I'm still confused by it all and now I'm 57, the same age as my brother was. It's obvious that you still miss her and feel how you did with her at that time, I hope my feelings don't fade away and stay with me as yours have for your sister. Thanks for your posting.
@@mikeatcora Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about your loss. In answer, yes, it was very strange when I became "older" than my older sister. The hardest part was when I became a mother and later, a grandmother, and she wasn't there to be an aunt. She would have been a much loved aunt. But in those joyful minutes I've felt her there with me, and it felt good. My kids never got to have cousins, and I regret that, but now their kids DO have cousins, and I share that joy. I wish you those joyful moments of your brother's presence, and hope it eases the painful times.

Yep, me too. Its another timeless Simon&Garfunkel. Love it. You hear Paul's distinctive voice here. The voices of these two were made for each other. They harmonised perfectly.

LYRICS: Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light, I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls" And whispered in the sounds of silence. (This is for those who want to read the lyrics while watching this video)
very good until the last few lines where there are a few mistakes. 1. "And the sign flashed its warning" is correct - not flashed "out" 2. "And the sign said...", not "then" the sign said. 3. "and tenement halls" - not "in tenement halls." 4. "whispered in the sounds...", not whispered in the sound.
To me, Disturbed version feel like you are already at the bottom, and S&G give me feel like steadily going downhill eternally, there's some ups but overall it still going downhill
They didn't have autotune, fireworks, colorful shows or strange outfits. All they had and all they needed was their incredible voices and a guitar. So simple but still or so perfect, or maybe the simplicity of it is what made it so perfect.
Four decades ago , my dad was a college student in Taiwan, he bought this album for English learning. Twenty years ago, I was in junior high, he gave this tape to me , for English learning, too. A month ago, he passed away in the age of 62. Now, I marinate myself in the memory of my dad with this beautiful song.

@@petejones4931 A lot of people have heard their songs or cover versions of the songs they wrote and have no idea who they are. It’s usually the older people that are now sixty or older who are the biggest fans of Simon & Garfunkel. It all depends what music you were listening to when growing up, and the younger kids of today may not have been exposed to much of their music.

I'm 65 now and I have listened the Great Geniuses of Simon & Garfunkel since I was 12 years old. Their albums were some of the ones I listened to every night on my record player. The way their music touches your soul is magnificent & beautiful that even a 12 year old could recognize the beauty in their soothing songs. ❤👩🦳
I'm pretty young but i like the music from the 60-80's. do you have any tips of great music from that era. I really love this, if i could listen to a song a last time then it would be this one.
@@sherminator1617 oh my goodness, there's just too many to choose from. Three decades of music is a lot of music. I love all kinds of music so that even adds tons more choices. There's only two kinds of music I have never been able to like and that's Heavy Metal because all I hear are screeching guitars and screaming voices. And the old fashioned twangy country music. I like the more modern country music. I love the 1960's & 1970's music. Just Google each year 1961 and onward and ask to list the top 40 for that year. Pick a song and give it a listen. One suggestion, try not to judge a band by just one of their songs. If you think you might enjoy a band give them a chance and listen to at least a couple songs. I can say during this pandemic I still listen to one of my favorite bands at night with my headphones on because their music is calming to me and helps me sleep. That band is called BREAD and I've been listening to the album entitled The Best of Bread. Depending what mood you're in there are other great music & bands like America, Christopher Cross, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doobie Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, The Grass Roots they were 1960's & 70's, so was Dr Hook & The Medicine Show but they're a required taste. If you like instrumental music especially Brass give Herb Albert & The Tiuana Brass band a try start with the song Rise. Jim Croce is also another great singer. Mama's & The Papa's, The Monkees, The Sweet but make sure you listen to the original The Sweet from the 1970's because after the band split up in early 1980's three of the members started their own Sweet band. The Sweet have several great songs and if you can find their songs also on a video then listen and watch them perform, it's great. Another great band from the 1970's to find on Video is named Pilot, I love that band too. Of course everyone loved the brother & sister duo back in the 70's called The Carpenters. Well, that's a start, should keep you busy for a few months. 👍
The song my late husband wanted played at his funeral service. Been 16 years and still ache to feel the comfort of being held in his arms....one day....one day.🌹
That hit me like a ton of bricks.. my greatest fear is to leave my wife alone, but if I do I pray she knows it was not my choice and that I await her on the other side…
I'm fifteen years old and a few weeks ago, I started listening to Simon and Garfunkel. My mom said that it was some of her favorite music, so I gave it a shot. Now I'm OBSESSED. I've listened to all of their albums on loop and now I'm just finishing watching this concert. I'm simply blown away. Paul's songwriting, his guitar, his voice, Art's voice, the way the two blend seamlessly together; it makes me want to cry. It's literal perfection. Perfection isn't easy to come by in this world, but when you find it it, it means everything. I'm so so angry that current music is so crappy, what would I give to be born a few generations earlier... I just want to say that I love S&G with my whole heart; it's given me so much.
Music from the 60’s and 70’s will be played forever because people from future generations, like yourself, continue to recognize its timeless greatness.
Be happy that you discovered the joys of Simon & Garfunkel now. Their songs will always be hip, groovy, and perfect, regardless of whatever crapola is being released these days. Great music lives forever! 💙
Charlotte, another brilliant song with just a man and his guitar is the live version of Don McLean’s 1971 tribute to Van Gogh called “Vincent”. Check it out if you aren’t familiar with it.
I grew up in the 60's. Beatles, etc. and Simon & Garfunkel. I was a hippie and loved all the 'relevant ' music. Kinda wish I could go back to that 'innocent' time. Today's 'music' is just a lot of noise.
It depends upon which "music" you're listening to. Look at Within Temptation, Delain, Nightwish, Disturbed, Hinder, The Calling. All of them have done great music. Tbh, Disturbed is what brought me here. I loved their cover of this song, so I wanted to hear the original.
its sick how much great music that was dropped in the 60's. I was born 1992 and all i can say is this music that are topping the lists today is trash compared to what was dropped in the 60's. That folk-rock music mixed with the culture back then must've been a sweet time for you .
Music made simple, as simple as that, from two friends , the best duet singers of all time. Just have a close look at the two, no earrings on their nose and ears, that's what how we were brought up in the 50,60,70s. The best of all times. Although there was nothing much to show on their stagework, people enjoy just listening to their silky voices.
None of the fans of this song even understand what its about. If they did, we would have a very different world today. Sound of silence is louder than ever
Certain songs, cross generations, race and religions...this is such a song. While listening we can all forget the world's troubles, and concentrate on only the good. Simon & Garfunkel we salute you 👏 👏 👏

2000 - This song is a Masterpiece 2010 - This song is a Masterpiece 2020 - This song is a Masterpiece ............... 2200 - This song is a Masterpiece
This song is one of the few masterpieces and will touch the heart and soul of those of us who care about this WORLD FOREVER. I say bring it back. Make it number 1.
I love and appreciate this music more every time I hear it. Where did good music go. Where is this world going? We all need to stop and listen to the sounds of silence. People talking without listening. Brilliant. Let's keep this music going people.
Art Garfunkel...lots of people consider him to be one of the most under-rated singers of all time. Not me. Just listen to that voice. Give a THUMBS UP if you agree. Thanks for posting.
Well it is a good song, but only one among millions of others. Stop being such a America intro-guy. Open your mind, hear, appreciate, understand other cultures and music, stop being such a self-centered American. Many, many other songs are better and a lot more thoughtful such as the german "Die Gedanken sind frei". A lot more deeper and brighter than the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkel and others.
*Tika* ...i think we call that, a "manner of speaking"? It is like this: when we say things like "forever", or most uses of absolutes like "always", "never" etc. These are not meant to be taken literally. They are used in hyperbole. Similarly, if Art Garfunkel is considered "One of the most under-rated singers of all time" it is not a literal statement. Not only is it hyperbolic, but it is really a reflection of one person's necessarily limited range of experience, exposure, and assimilation of those things. For example, i often state "Fats Waller! Greatest entertainer ever!" Do i literally mean that? Well, i only said it because within my range of musical "likes" this is true. It is a personal truth. It is a sentimental expression though. Do i really think Fats Waller any better than Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, or Count Basie? The answer: it doesn't matter because i love them all, and the question which is greatest depends upon the mood i am in at the moment. I am not much of a Simon & Garfunkle fan. That has nothing to do with their song writing and singing -both of which i deem excellent. Do i literally agree with the original post? No! Of course not! But it is not intended to be understood that way. But i also think i understand what he was trying to communicate, and his statement is something i can both agree and disagree with at the same time -because statements like this are intended to be understood in terms of nuance -layers -generalization -proximity. I think the bigger question here, is why you have to pour hate down on some one for making a sentimental expression like this, which is obviously going to be boxed within the confines of his personal artistic tastes? You are demanding an awful lot from a human being if you are expecting one to make declarations of divine authority and holy truth when they express their opinion. If that is what you really want some one else to perform for you when they speak (or write), then what you are really asking for is a God-King, here on earth. In America, we are good with God -because he is intangible, so we can't crucify him again. But we don't much care for kings, and we have a long tradition of feeling that way about them, and persons who would make themselves kings.
I’ve been listening to this song since I was 13 years old and it’s beauty and profundity are as exquisite at 69 as they were when I was 13. Indeed, If anything, I feel it more deeply with each passing year. We should all be grateful for artists such as these.
At 69, as well and listening to this song again and now dealing with COVIS19-induced anxiety and depression , to me 'hello darkness my old friend' speaks to the darkness, that you experience with the tougher days of mental illness ... "old friend" eventually you will be gone :-) But "America" is so uplifting :-)
Let this be a reminder to all of you that music is the most important thing in this universe, don't let them tell you otherwise. This is reality and truth and heart and soul and everything else is just atoms and matter
To arouse us from our lethargy that leads us into the great flashes of light that will delight...the nightly sky, as thunder roars, and children cry as their mothers abhor; as night replaced day, for we forgot our way, until Paul Simon came along, and did play, this song; but the deaf not hear, and the blind did not see, as the many sounds of silence, came from out of an eerie...melee of fear.
Ticks me off like nothing else. Applauds of excitement at the start and in appreciation at the end is all good, but be immersed in the music while it's playing ffs (at least don't ruin other people's immersion). Depending on song and setting, dancing/jumping is acceptable. It's just an expression of what emotions the music gives you and gives something back to the artist.
@@DekkarJr yeah, perhaps I went a bit overboard with that comment xD I just get annoyed when the audience makes a lot of noise during an emotional performance.
This should be included in the 20 TOP best songs (both for the lyrics and the harmony) of all time...Every time I hear it, I *REALLY LISTEN TO IT* , and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes...😍💔😍 Thank you Simon and Garfunkel for this MASTERPEACE! but also for so many others... They say you can't go home again. You can't go back. But here I am, watching this in 2021 (tearing up watching this, as I was there in Central Park in 1981) and what I'd give right now to go back to the 60's, 70's and (some of the) 80's.
I am. Listening to these incredible men makes everything alright, no matter what life throws at me. God bless them. Paul's music/lyrics and Art's voice, a perfect sublime combination. Thank you.
No autotune, just natural voices and a guitar, this song touches the soul! Their voices gives so much comfort and takes me down some of my best memory lane
Everything of this song is perfect. The lonely but beautiful melody of the guitar, the counterpoint of two different voices singing together in harmony, the poetry of the lyrics... one of the best songs ever written.
One of my dad's favourite songs. I miss him dearly. He was my hero, a war veteran, who sadly died of pancreatic cancer. He never got to meet his second grandson, as I was 4 months pregnant with him when my dad died. I named my son after my dad.
I never tire of hearing this. I’m a 60 yr old veteran and it has pushed me through some of the toughest moments in my life, both in theatre and at home, after losing brothers in arms and cherished family members. When my time is finally over this is my goodbye to the world and all that means anything to me.
That line, "Writing songs that voices never shared", when I was a tiny child I remember not really understanding. But as I grew older, I did. Our society is filled with stuff and crap that last about ten minutes. Then a year later no-one remembers it. Same with music. But THIS music will still be played in 100 years time.
These men will forever be one of the best musicians of our time. Some of my best memories of my childhood are watching Simon & Garfunkel on the BBC and PBS with my family. Love their harmonies. Never stop singing in my soul.
I was a young man when I first heard Simon and Garfunkel sing this and other tunes. Now I am old and this music still effects me.Thank you for this video!
its crazy how the low/high dynamic of the harmony in this song switches from one being flat, and the other being expressive, back and forth so seamlessly is incredible

ME TO
This song came out in the mid 60's.
LYRICS:
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence.
(This is for those who want to read the lyrics while watching this video)
very good until the last few lines where there are a few mistakes. 1. "And the sign flashed its warning" is correct - not flashed "out"
2. "And the sign said...", not "then" the sign said. 3. "and tenement halls" - not "in tenement halls." 4. "whispered in the sounds...", not whispered in the sound.
Wow. Thanks. I remember when it come out. It is still an awesome song.
Thanks
O Som do Silêncio
Olá, escuridão, minha velha amiga
Vim conversar com você outra vez
Porque uma visão surgiu mansamente
Deixou suas sementes enquanto eu dormia
E a visão que foi plantada em meu cérebro
Ainda permanece
Dentro do som do silêncio
Em sonhos atormentados, eu caminhei sozinho
Ruas estreitas de paralelepípedos
Sob a luz de um poste de rua
Levantei minha gola contra o frio e a umidade
Quando meus olhos foram apunhalados pelo brilho de uma luz de neon
Que partiu a noite
E tocou o som do silêncio
E na luz nua eu vi
Dez mil pessoas, talvez mais
Pessoas falando sem dizer
Pessoas ouvindo sem escutar
Pessoas escrevendo canções que vozes jamais compartilharam
E ninguém ousava
Perturbar o som do silêncio
E a placa dizia
As palavras dos profetas estão escritas nas paredes do metrô
E nos corredores dos cortiços
E são sussurradas ao som do silêncio
Thank you for the words, much appreciated.
This is one of the greatest songs ever written and sung by S&G, no one can sing it like they did.
From one of the great albums of all time
Disturbed's is crazily better
Disturbed do an amazing version of it
The Version of Disturbed is beautiful, too 👌🏻
To me, Disturbed version feel like you are already at the bottom, and S&G give me feel like steadily going downhill eternally, there's some ups but overall it still going downhill
Silence is gold,to speak is silver.
They didn't have autotune, fireworks, colorful shows or strange outfits. All they had and all they needed was their incredible voices and a guitar. So simple but still or so perfect, or maybe the simplicity of it is what made it so perfect.
Because they have real talent and skill
They actually had something to say, this is all
They and others like them in their time are the pioneers of music. It is because of these guys that music has reached such popularity
They were my very first concert in New Brunswick, NJ at Rutgers University.
That is TRUE music!
Only two voices and one guitar. Magic
Durante siglos el hombre buscaba la inmortavilidad ,este tipo de música perdurará en el tiempo .
It's amazing that it's only 2 guys harmonizing with a simple acoustic guitar, but it's timelessly beautiful.
So beautiful. Words are idyllic.
Two world class talents working together.... A rare event my friend.
Classic! The way great music was created
Yeah really beautiful
That is because they are really talented. Regards and have a nice day
I was so glad I saw these two in Melbourne Australia. I was in second row directly in front of them. Amazing

Decade
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

The way their music touches your soul is magnificent & beautiful that even a 12 year old could recognize the beauty in their soothing songs. ❤👩🦳
@doug phil thanks

Robert I agree he was indeed a great singer. Regards and have a nice day.
Robert D In Tulsa I am listening to it now. Suzette South Africa

At 69, as well and listening to this song again and now dealing with COVIS19-induced anxiety and depression , to me 'hello darkness my old friend' speaks to the darkness, that you experience with the tougher days of mental illness ... People talking without speaking.. people hearing without listening..
How true!
its crazy how the low/high dynamic of the harmony in this song switches from one being flat, and the other being expressive, back and forth so seamlessly is incredible
Chyba najcudowniejszy utwór jaki słyszałem. Teraz już nikogo nie stać by wywołać takie emocje podczas słuchania piosenki,.
Dokładnie 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Pure and real natural talent, no make up and fancy clothes and background special effect. Just pure talent!
Yiling Huang totally agreed
Well, there can be talent also with makeup, fancy clothes, and background special effects

Tout simplement génial et intemporel.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I´m not a great fan of the remixed version, the one that was more successful in 60´s and later (as far as I know), this, THIS is true masterpiece for me, perfect lyrics, perfect guitar, perfect voices, it all matched together so well. Give me goosebumps everytime I hear it, and it´s one of my favourites. This song is litteraly whole story, a legacy, a prophecy, a message. Love it.
This song is still well positioned in my list of Top Ten Songs ever. And I am a 67 year old male in the twilight of my life. The greatest lyrics are, "and the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls." Those words are are still true today, as they were some 50 years ago.
because this song brings us to the pain and hope in our liv es
@@anthonyletschat259 Agreed. When I first heard those words sung all those years ago, I was saddened, but had hope for the future. Today, the words still ring true and sadly, nothing has changed.

I am a Colorado Western Slope resident from a small town where all is peaceful. I came back to Toledo Ohio to take care of my aging parents. My father, decided to murder my mother and then commit suicide. This song eases my pain. I just wish I could contact Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel to let them know what a precious gift this song is in my life.
@@bennettbond I am sorry for your loss. I am also glad to read that this song helps you manage your pain. I used to have the following saying on my computer screen saver, when there was such a thing, "Go quietly amongst the noise and haste, be gentle with yourself... for you are a child of the universe." I wish you peace and happiness.
