Eh, you can google up some theories. I think the development team got busted or relocated, then probably came the disaster of steam boxes. Then everyone gave up, the materials were leaked, there was nothing to make the game for.
Then Half Life Alyx was made just to keep the brand awareness and test new hardware.
He doesn't think it would hold up today. The game market has changed multiple times over. It's a boring reason, but it's the reason.
Additionally, he lost all motivation for it. Gabe sent a gnome to space as a joke, if he wanted to finish half life he could, but he doesn't.

Ayadi A. It hasn't been cancelled. It was confirmed in his AMA when somebody asked a question about the half-life/portal universe and he confirmed a sequel. I can guarantee you the portal trilogy is over, so half-life 3 confirmed xd.
Chef Excellence yeah but Valve always claims they work on stuff that is in the interest of the customers. I see more people asking for Half Life 3 than I do VR or Steam Machines and Valve doesnt give 2 shits.
I think the point is that Valve's policy on making games focuses more on their own selfishness than the fans. "Yeah we are not feeling like making it." i understand but there is a fucking line you have to draw until it becomes just cruel and injust. Ep2 ended on a cliffhanger for crying out loud and every other company makes games on their announced dates, only sometimes prolonging them but still usually delivering. Valve just does what they want, hoping that gives better creative results.
They've set the bar so low that fans including myself are ready to settle for anything at this point. Even if it looks exactly like the Source engine HL2 it always did and has no new mechanics. We just want the story to end.

I remember how Yahtzee said that Valve wants the main Half-Life games to represent huge steps forward for the industry as a whole. The first one did that through being a continuous series of areas without any cutscenes or menus in between. The second one did that through the Source engine’s physics. Alyx did that through pushing VR to its absolute limit. Maybe 3 will come out in a few centuries and show the benefits time travel or teleportation can bring to video games idk

@@blackPeopleAreGarbag basically valve’s model is for ppl to work on the projects they want, & HL3 development would always start, but eventually fizzle out just because there wasn’t enough interest. (there’s leaked alpha footage on TH-cam somewhere if you’re curious) However, Valve wanted to show off their new Source 2 engine, what they could do with VR, & bring a AAA game to VR for the first time. And what better way to innovate than a game in the Half-Life series? Unlike HL3, this had everyone’s interest. Also, devs felt more pressured with HL3 b/c they felt like it had to be the “perfect game”, but felt comfortable with Alyx b/c it was a prequel game. But yea that’s basically it.

It's weird because you can see exactly where the decision to stop working on EP3 happened. In the first couple of years after The Orange Box released, Gabe was very forthcoming in explaining how Episode 3 is gonna blow everybody's pants off. He was more than happy to discuss it and at least say "yep, we've been hard at work, it's gonna be great." And then sometime later that all changes. He's no longer happy to even mention it, he just outright tells people "I'm not talking about that", with no explanation other than "it'll be ready when it's ready." I don't think even Gabe was willing to admit they weren't working on it anymore.
Given the fact that Marc Laidlaw "leaked" the plot for Episode 3 years later, it wouldn't surprise me if some internal conflicts at Valve played a role in shelving the entire development cycle for the game. Something happened at Valve that made Gabe reach the decision to mothball it, and I don't think it's because they've been "too busy" printing money with Steam. The whole point of the Steam market is it's very hands-off. Nobody at Valve has to touch anything to make money from it. It's almost entirely passive income with the exception of occasional maintenance and upkeep. It requires nowhere near the same amount of man power to maintain, unlike developing a video game. I think something happened at Valve. Maybe some important people quit, or possibly even died. I think that's why the sudden shift occurred in Gabe's demeanor on mentioning the game over the years. It'd be one thing if it had been 5 or 6 years and he just got sick of getting the same question, but he became VERY disinterested in even hearing about it after just 2 or 3 years. All very suspicious, IMO.

The problem with all this anticipation is that Half-Life 3 *MUST* be excellent. It cannot be simply good, decent or below. The bar has been set too high. It's big risk, big reward for Valve.

All jokes and lies aside, it's actually kind of wholesome when you realize how many young kids Gabe is interviewing with. I don't claim to know much about him, but It's interesting to see how many "small time" interviewers he's willing to talk too. Good on him.
I think he was one of the first people who gave Geoff Keighley a chance. Keighley talks about being with the team as they were about to publish HL, which was revolutionary for the industry. It seems like that experience made Keighley's career.

Darth Bane You have either never played half life or it's just not you're kind of game/world because for me and many others it is an amazing game with an immense story. Being a fps game should not label it as a bland game, not all games have to be open world fps in order to have good story and immersion.

Gareth Douglas the story of half life 1 was a bare bones Doom clone with only the ending conversation with Gman doing anything to flesh out the story, and Half-Life 2 has not aged nearly as well as people would have you believe. Half the characters are generic npcs from HL1 that they slapped names on and never get fleshed out cause they treat them like we're supposed to know who they are already. Because the characters know Gordon and talk to him like he already knows everything even though the player has no idea what happened between 1 and 2 or how any of these people are significant. Gordon Freeman doesn't work as a protagonist cause he's too established in the lore for the player to project themselves into but doesn't do anything to build the story since he never speaks. I mean Dr. Breen literally came out of thin air to be the antagonist and you barely see him before he dies. Episodes 1 & 2 are fantastic and still hold up really well but base HL2 is super below average shooter with some trash level design aside from Ravenholm. HL1 holds up better in terms of atmosphere and gameplay tbh.

I’m not mad that it was canceled, I’m mad at their lack of communication. I just don’t understand why they didn’t keep the community in the know.
Valve doesn't communicate because they can't really keep promises and schedules the same way other game companies do, because they aren't tied to investors or publishers and therefore can just do whatever they want, whenever they want. Their income doesn't come from making games, but selling other people's games. So they have far less incentive to actually keep making games. They are better off being silent than making promises they most likely can't keep. Everything is just so convoluted and uncertain with what they do.
