"Realism" 😂 It's sad cuz any detail they added is washed out or colourless. Which makes it look way worse than the 2016 remaster. That game is so sharp! And the mirrors are still impressive today!

One thing you missed CrowB - They removed a lot of lines of Frank's dialogue, replacing them with nothing, which leaves some scenes with awkard dead air.
They apparently wanted it to be expressed by the new motion capture's facial animations instead but it just makes it look like its missing something in several scenes.
It gets even worse when you remember that the Wii was a suped up GameCube. Luigi's Mansion was a GC launch title, and _that_ game had functioning mirrors.
The original Dead Rising's graphics have obviously aged, but looking back, the devs did a lot with little; the attention to detail was outstanding. Excellent early showcase of the 360's hardware. Here it's like they did little with a lot. The AI textures are just ridiculous. Would it have killed them to hire a few artists to redraw the texture assets?

It's kind of shocking to me just how long it's been since we've had functional mirrors in video games. It's so rare anymore that it's noteworthy when they show up... The Wii could do it. The original Deus Ex had them. Modern computers though? No, just too difficult... too taxing.

Gaming isn't like the late 90s or early 2000s, it became too big either during or just after PS2 / Gamecube era, I personally blame PS2 being a really cheap DvD player at the time as every household had one or should I say no reason not to buy the game / DVD system over a regular DvD. Then came day one patches and purely digital platforms looking at Steam, probably the first large nail in the coffin alongside DLCs that weren't "expansion size", the thing is the average videogame player has no nostalgia, no discerning eye for detail, nor does he notice technical performance or stutter or lack of ambition, he just buys, plays for 1-15 hours, then do other stuff.

Going from 512 mb of ram to 16gb (32 times the ram!) for a game that: -Can no longer handle real time reflections. -1/5th the particle effects, from blood, prop debris, or even bullet shells coming out of guns. -Hastily thrown together ai generated textures that turn 50% of grocery products in a small midwestern town into assorted imports from a random Eastern European country. -Those same AI-textures also imply spell checking is illegal in-universe. -No longer functioning eyelids on seemingly anyone (Seriously what is up with their eyes?). -Makes everything look like a desaturated mess covered in a thin layer of vaseline. -Cuts up areas into smaller chunks because your computer can't handle these improvements. -Likely horribly unoptimized spaghetti code that is the primary culprit for several of these points (at least they managed to keep the download size under 100gb). -Much weaker physics engine, can't barricade yourself anymore, zombies can phase through solid objects don't you know? No writers had to be paid to create a narrative with characters, events, scenes. The music department also got shafted. The only people who really get any kind of employment out of this are the 3D artists who get the privilege of modeling from reference; that sounds soul-crushingly BORING for a creative type, and a MASSIVE waste of their talents. The coders are probably also bored out of their minds, too. These are problems I have with all remakes. They charge so much for the game, and all the profit goes to the C-Suite and shareholders. Talent is either neglected and left to perform mundane tasks, or forced into other industries from a lack of employment opportunity, lost to the gaming industry forever. A lot of people in the industry are extremely talented and we should be grateful to have them. Not just the Miyazakis and John Carmacks, but the people that are guided by those people's creative visions to, you know, create the game in the first place. They could all leave for a wide variety of industries that will happily integrate their skillsets for a much higher compensation. These people are here because they're passionate about video games; wring that passion dry and they'll become passionate about living in a nice condo within walking distance to work. I’d be really curious to see a direct comparison of the sound design - the audio mix in the remake definitely seems less detailed. I remember being impressed at the time at how much is communicated with sound in the original. It’s so important in a game with so many nooks and crannies, where you’ll miss really important stuff if you’re not listening for it. Getting the space the sounds live in right is a big part of that, and it doesn’t seem like they put much thought into that in the remake.

The details section really made me appreciate what the developers were able to achieve on the 360. The fact that the 2024 remaster doesn't even include reflections from the original when we have graphics cards and consoles capable of ray tracing is wild. Yeah Frank’s age actually felt really important in terms of his motive in the original. He was just old enough to be seasoned and have a little experience, but just young enough to be willing to risk everything for a big break. You got the sense that he was a hungry young professional who hadn’t yet reached the peak of his career, who is caught between helping people and seeing the situation he’s in as his ticket to something bigger. That’s central to some of the drama in the game especially regarding the time mechanic, where the situation becomes more than just a huge opportunity, and crosses over into something he’s personally invested in because he’s genuinely a decent guy. That’s literally a huge source of tension baked into the game design - do I spend my time saving people, or getting to the bottom of all this? It doesn’t work nearly as well when he looks ready for retirement.
Imagine adding censorship and making a family-friendly remaster of a fucking R-rated game Edit: The game is actually M-rated, but I hope you still get the point
Crowbcat videos are both somehow funny and depressing. They show how far the industry of video games has fallen just in terms of style, identity, charm, and overall polish. How to remake a game "for modern times": (1) Make it more serious, less over the top or goofy fun (2) Remove reflections, make the physics more stiff and rigid (3) Make the lighting darker so you can't make out the fine details (4) Make what is effectively the same game overall, but multiply the file size by thirty or more (5) Instead of making textures and compressing them, take compressed textures and AI upscale them (6) Make the environment less interactive as a whole - but keep or specifically make some things interactive to try and keep the illusion of being up to par in terms of interactive environments

Nothing to scare you or make you wonder "wow that must have been awful". No respect for the imagery or messaging is left.
The original was made by actual game developers. People that studied things like programming, logic, narrative, and gameplay mechanics. I'm pretty sure the people that made the demake didn't study any of that.
I think it's more that demakes are made like an assemly line item. Each bit is made as a separate bit and then shoved together. When the originals were being made they were made like something handcrafted.
Actually it's the exact opposite. Having a deadass sign saying “this way” just makes me angry. It leads to carlito and no where else so it’s not like people can excuse this with “a survivor put it there”. There’s no safe place in that food court, it doesn’t say “food this way”, and the rafters where Carlito is doesn’t have anything for survivors to use. There’s no logical reason to put that there besides the new devs saying “we think you’re stupid and didn’t pay attention to Brad audibly saying ‘go that way’ “
My biggest takeaway from this montage is that the original Dead Rising really was an incredibly densely detailed zombie survival world, and as graphic fidelity has improved, many elements have not been retained.

And it costs as much as the original did adjusted for inflation.
It aaaaalllllllllllllll went to the C-suite/Shareholders/CEO. There were no concept artists they had to pay for Frank's design.

Frank's from demake = 55 years old!

The AI reconstruction of sticker text on minor props is just unforgivably vile
It's upscaling, not reconstruction. They tried to make blurry images hi-def with a simple click of a button, like how photoshop tries to do the same and even try to fill in some blanks.
Like, even if they remade all the sticker and product designs just to have higher res assets it'd be fine. No need to perfectly copy the originals (even though it'd be better, but not necessary). How to remake a game "for modern times":
(1) Make it more serious, less over the top or goofy fun
(2) Remove reflections, make the physics more stiff and rigid
(3) Make the lighting darker so you can't make out the fine details
(4) Make what is effectively the same game overall, but multiply the file size by thirty or more
(5) Instead of making textures and compressing them, take compressed textures and AI upscale them
(6) Make the environment less interactive as a whole - but keep or specifically make some things interactive to try and keep the illusion of being up to par in terms of interactive environments
As well as censor basically anything someone can be offended by
7. Censor anything not approproiate for censorship commis.. I mean "modern audiences"
(7) Censor _everything,_ unless it appeals to queer people or degenerates that is; in that case, _over-sexualize_ it.
@@mightyfineincredible2252 I count that under the umbrella of point 1, as it tends to be that any form of fun even in an overtly exaggerated manner can be divisive or controversial - so instead the aim becomes to be a sort of "minimum viable fun" video game.

The golden age of gaming (up until the mid '00s) was characterised by people who were hobbyists/bedroom coders/frustrated writers/frustrated directors/frustrated muscians who joined or fell into the industry and ended up doing the job out of love. I would know, been playing games since 1985.
During the era of the PS3 and 360 formal videogame degrees etc. came to the forefront. Not saying that this is the problem per say, it's more that once the HD era started and games got really, really expensive to make on this type of scale the hobby was cooked (it's where we got the first DLCs like horse armour etc.).

Given the myriad interviews available online and in print I've seen and watched over the years (gamer since 1985) I truly think that most designers aren't "lazy" or trying to make games that most people dislike. The issue, as with film and music, is that video games can now be billion dollar moneyspinners so the beancounters have moved in with their shareholders and trust me, they only care about getting a "product" out ASAP as cheaply as possible and so will do everything to monetise/nickel and dime in order to appealto what they think is the mass market.

I genuinely enjoyed it. I've been playing dead rising since it dropped, I gotta have at least 50 playthroughs of the first one. I think people just care about things that literally do not matter. Sure, these little things can add up and break your immersion, but, crazy, I played through the game and the only big difference was the difficulty cause I wasn't staring at cans or trying to take pictures of cans etc. Didn't try shooting into the parking lot cause I was saving every survivor trying to get every achievement in one run I can. Probably because I set my bias aside for the first one beforehand and didnt carry insane expectations. it is fascinating to me that games had mirrors and proper reflections without any issues. and the minute raytracing was announced by Nvidia, suddenly all developers decided that "reflections are hard to run without a 4090 with DLSS 3"
Because older devs had experience with optimization and working within confines, and were passionate.
Yeah... planar reflections, cube maps, and other clever tricks like mgs2 reflections on ship for example, have been replaced with dog shit screen space reflections and ray tracing to sell graphics cards
