Capcom seriously tried to trojan horse us with that shit. They were upfront about Larry's redesign and the removal of erotica, but they hoped we wouldn't notice all the other little differences.
It’s really bad. I’m all for being mindful, respectful, and considerate of others but this is a bit much. Some of the charm of the original was how campy and crude it was. Sure it was juvenile and low brow but that added a certain level of atmosphere to the game.

How to remake a game "for modern times": (1) Make it more serious, less over the top or goofy fun (2) Remove reflections, make the physics more stiff and rigid (3) Make the lighting darker so you can't make out the fine details (4) Make what is effectively the same game overall, but multiply the file size by thirty or more (5) Instead of making textures and compressing them, take compressed textures and AI upscale them (6) Make the environment less interactive as a whole - but keep or specifically make some things interactive to try and keep the illusion of being up to par in terms of interactive environments
@@mightyfineincredible2252 I count that under the umbrella of point 1, as it tends to be that any form of fun even in an overtly exaggerated manner can be divisive or controversial - so instead the aim becomes to be a sort of "minimum viable fun" video game.
(3) and (4) especially annoy me so much. (3) in RE2 Remake where everything was so dark you couldn't see sh*t, which is a shame given how beautiful the RPD is designed. In the remaster, it literally sounds like you’re just listening to the raw unedited audio file that was recorded in the booth. The vocals sound extremely isolated because of it.
it is fascinating to me that games had mirrors and proper reflections without any issues. and the minute raytracing was announced by Nvidia, suddenly all developers decided that "reflections are hard to run without a 4090 with DLSS 3"
Yeah... planar reflections, cube maps, and other clever tricks like mgs2 reflections on ship for example, have been replaced with dog shit screen space reflections and ray tracing to sell graphics cards
Translation: We are lazy and just want money, so no reflections. Buy our skins. PS2/3 and XBOX (360) were the golden times of gaming, where it was a passion project for the devs. Now its just about $$$
It beggars belief that they turned a tragic villain, Clint, who was supposed to be a Vietnam soldier with PTSD and turned him into a cartoon villain who hates moles. The characters aren't even meant to be older is the crazy thing, the hair textures are just really pale so everyone looks like they're greying, along with very detailed skin textures making people look wrinkly. Also I swear they just straight up reused models in some cases with just minor edits, like the sniper family, one of the sons looks identical to the dad despite he's meant to be like 18, it's like they cloned the dad's model and just edited it rather than making a new model for the son.
The rest is more than enough reason to be put off entirely, but AI upscaling is always the factor that results in a hard no for me. Just like Tomb Raider. Just like GTA.
13:36 The blatant misspelling of “New Releases” because the AI they used to upscale the texture fucked up speaks volumes about how much they cared for anything that wasn’t graphics and censorship to appeal to as many audiences as possible. Also I love the fact that when it came to censorship, they highlighted two points that most people probably wouldn’t care about (Larry’s redesign and the removal of the Erotica category) but then proceeded to butcher the dialogue and character of one of the most emotional and tragic psychopaths in the series (because I guess they didn’t want to offend communists?)
Although I agree, I do feel like in that very specific example, it could’ve genuinely just been a typo considering how drastically different the textures are, and the font isn’t even the same. (But yes honestly the old one is still so much better, and pops way more visually) But yeah everyone else is absolutely AI slop
When I heard about AI taking over I assumed it would be when it was indistinguishable from manmade content. Nope. Just make things look as cheap and automated as possible who cares. why should i listen to an ad or okay a video with a grating fake voice and nonsense phrasing. Why would anyone pay for it?

I feel that Resi 4 wasn't as bad as this. Like yeah, they changed up dialogue a bit but I feel it was more warranted there with it being more of a reimagining. Here it's just take shit out to take it out. Thought they learned from Resi 3 remake.
For anyone who is going to ask why do you care that they changed such small details, I would ask the exact same thing back to the devs. Why did they care to change these things in the first place?

These newfangled fancy pieces of software with tons of reflections and dynamic shadows feel less of themselves than their original counterparts two decades later. Whole legacies and memories just.... waxxed over and desaturated. There is no other word for something like this than "Demake"
im ONLY going to argue that actually real Demakes are pretty cool, unlike this crap. like, you can find a Demake of FF7 for the NES thats pretty awesome. uh but yea, this remake sucks ass.
I hope crowbcat keeps it up, it sucks that he got harassed because he dared to criticize RE4MAKE 😢
I laugh and say wtf at these all the time it right
I didn’t realize the censorship was that heavy
Capcom seriously tried to trojan horse us with that shit. They were upfront about Larry's redesign and the removal of erotica, but they hoped we wouldn't notice all the other little differences.
It’s really bad.
I’m all for being mindful, respectful, and considerate of others but this is a bit much.
Some of the charm of the original was how campy and crude it was.
Sure it was juvenile and low brow but that added a certain level of atmosphere to the game.
@@tylertheguy3160 Larry's redesign was because of China
@@steverogers7601 I mean i feel the point of the "erotica" ratings is to criticize the voyeuristic nature of photojournalism. The more tantalizing, the more attractive. If you're a moron you think it's glorifying it, if you have a brain you see it as an indictment on the profession and how some (like Frank) go about it. The humour softens the blow while still making the point clear.
For ESG scores, censorship is everything.
Capcom replacing Frank with a doppelganger is definitely the most horrifying thing to me. Also everyone's new voice sounds like we're in the booth with them and not in a large mall
I love Crowbcat, wish he'd post more since he is far better than other game critique channels and he doesn't even talk .
I prefer his style over youtubers that ramble for 30 minutes saying things we already know. Crowbcat does it in a very special and good way, exposing the true reality of a game with hard evidence.

How in the heck were they able to make this almost 20 year old game feel more dated in this demake. It's almost impressive.
11:30 is what pisses me off the most , how can these modern games require so much processing power yet have less detail then most 360 games
The processing power is dedicated to all the extra polygons in the 3D models and nothing else.
Because technology doesn't replace art.
But do they contain less detail than most 360 games, really? Like when you think about it, do modern games look worse than 360 games?
@@thomasvlund I don't think they're talking about graphic fidelity. They probably mean all the missing details like reflections, animations, particle effects etc.
@@thomasvlundyes, absolutely. Call of duty is the best example. The 360 era games all had visually clear sight lines, which let you actually use your iron sights without issue. The modern CoDs all have issues with visuall clutter. ESPECIALLY with the vignetting and shaders they use.
Oh wow that change to the cultists is really egregious. People need to remember that little changes like these compound and compound upon each other where the sum of it's whole is the problem, rather than hyper focusing on one or two problems and asking "Why does this in paticular bother you?"
Yep, they are no different than zombies now.
Its more question, "do they see itself in this?"
THEY RUINED THE GARAGE FULL OF ZOMBIES
The original just feels so much more visceral and real. Like some of the characters actually creeped me out, and I was way more immersed. I felt the sense of urgency and panic. But the demake feels like everything is gonna be fine, and hollow and empty.
The thing is, erotica and gore is PART OF THE FUCKING ATMOSPHERE AND GENRE THE GAME WAS RIFFING ON.
Pretty much how it always is now. New games often look and feel similar, could also be because everything uses UE nowadays.
@@USSMariner was meant to be critical of the way media will sensationalise everything which ironically makes the original feel more relevant in today's social media hellscape. This remaster doesn't get it.
The psychopaths also look piss easy from gameplay Ive seen, to the point it ruins the experience
something DRDR messes up is the clean aspect of the first games mall, one of the reasons why the game was so uneasy and creepier was how completely clean the mall was mixed with the zombies rotting corpses and moans. the fact they made it dirtier by placing trash everywhere ruined not only that feeling but ALSO ruins the whole point of steven cause the store was completely clean cause he was taking care of it, it doesnt make sense to be trash there
How to remake a game "for modern times":
(1) Make it more serious, less over the top or goofy fun
(2) Remove reflections, make the physics more stiff and rigid
(3) Make the lighting darker so you can't make out the fine details
(4) Make what is effectively the same game overall, but multiply the file size by thirty or more
(5) Instead of making textures and compressing them, take compressed textures and AI upscale them
(6) Make the environment less interactive as a whole - but keep or specifically make some things interactive to try and keep the illusion of being up to par in terms of interactive environments
As well as censor basically anything someone can be offended by
7. Censor anything not approproiate for censorship commis.. I mean "modern audiences"
(7) Censor _everything,_ unless it appeals to queer people or degenerates that is; in that case, _over-sexualize_ it.
I love me some neat architecture in my video games. Always prefer OG RPD because of this. (4) is what leads to every modern game eating up half of your External Hard Drive storage.
"Today players will experience the same shock players felt when original game was released" Well, it's true somehow. In both cases first thought was "unbelievable how they could create something like this" but with completely different context. Also ending is heartbreaking.
29:01 There’s a huge mixing quality difference between the original and remaster. You hear a lot more reverb and bass in the original’s voices. In the remaster, it literally sounds like you’re just listening to the raw unedited audio file that was recorded in the booth. The vocals sound extremely isolated because of it.

This must have been a huge amount of work. Thank you for doing this!
it is fascinating to me that games had mirrors and proper reflections without any issues. and the minute raytracing was announced by Nvidia, suddenly all developers decided that "reflections are hard to run without a 4090 with DLSS 3"
Because older devs had experience with optimization and working within confines, and were passionate.
Yeah... planar reflections, cube maps, and other clever tricks like mgs2 reflections on ship for example, have been replaced with dog shit screen space reflections and ray tracing to sell graphics cards
Translation: We are lazy and just want money, so no reflections. Buy our skins. PS2/3 and XBOX (360) were the golden times of gaming, where it was a passion project for the devs. Now its just about $$$
Classic move. Removing features to sell them again later.
And it works.
It beggars belief that they turned a tragic villain, Clint, who was supposed to be a Vietnam soldier with PTSD and turned him into a cartoon villain who hates moles. The "war is bad" messaging is gone. Crawling through the vents is no longer the scary foxhole/spiderhole tactics common in Vietnam but a bugs bunny style burrowing. Nothing to scare you or make you wonder "wow that must have been awful". No respect for the imagery or messaging is left.

The blatant misspelling of “New Releases” because the AI they used to upscale the texture fucked up speaks volumes about how much they cared for anything that wasn’t graphics and censorship to appeal to as many audiences as possible.

Although I agree, I do feel like in that very specific example, it could’ve genuinely just been a typo considering how drastically different the textures are, and the font isn’t even the same. (But yes honestly the old one is still so much better, and pops way more visually)
