  • Valve president and co-founder Gabe Newell talks to us about the Steam Deck, including its origins, the other name Valve considered for it, its goals, and how Valve sees it as a whole new product category.
    The Steam Deck, is a handheld gaming PC with a form-factor similar to that of a Nintendo Switch. No hard release date has been given, but the Steam Deck has a launch planned for Holiday 2021. The price starts at $399, with models that have more storage at $529 and $649 as well

    Interviewer - "How do you know this will be profitable."
    Gabe - "We're basically flush with cash so it doesn't matter. We're just going to go by user response instead of some profitability KPI."
    Gabe gets it.

      It's basically a handheld console for steam and they got their storefront cut for profit. Is the deck is a success it's going to increase sales for them.

    Valve and Gabe have such a reasonable outlook for their business and PC gaming and always try to think from the gamer's perspective. Not all their endeavors worked great but they are constantly evolving and learning. Imagine a company like Epic making a hardware and allowing Steam on it... in no universe this happens.

    • @romain3877
      @romain3877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      That's the great thing about Valve. Where Epic is using money from U-E and Fornite to create exclusives to "force" people onto their platform, Valve is using that money to create something useful for the player to come by themselves. The end is the same but the path is very different.
