- Valve president and co-founder Gabe Newell talks to us about the Steam Deck, including its origins, the other name Valve considered for it, its goals, and how Valve sees it as a whole new product category.
The Steam Deck, is a handheld gaming PC with a form-factor similar to that of a Nintendo Switch. No hard release date has been given, but the Steam Deck has a launch planned for Holiday 2021. The price starts at $399, with models that have more storage at $529 and $649 as well

this is why valve should never go public, them being a private company makes them uniquely free to work towards projects that might be unprofitable, but are healthy for the ecosystem in the long term

The fact he even mentioned the Epic Games Store being installed on his own device, when you know _for a fact_ that Tim & China would squeeze and squeal for exclusivity if they ever had the juice to come out with an Epic handheld (only EGS, only Unreal Engine games, wrapped up in a poor customer experience), shows that Gabe and Valve truly are the saviours of PC gaming.
So refreshing to see innovation placed above pure monetary gains.
Literally the most consumer friendly product I’ve ever seen in the electronics industry, and it’s so refreshing.

Very Pro consumer... The fact that they open it up for competitor stores to also be on it is pretty awesome, rather than keeping it just Steam.

Gabe Newell will always be to me one of the greatest gaming pioneers most people born after the 90s will know nothing about. He single-handedly masterminded groundbreaking physics in games as well as new innovative game mechanics never seen before. Steam has singlehandedly revolutionized PC gaming. Above all else, he makes money, but he is still honest, intelligent and generous.
He ported the original doom to windows and is largely credited for making modern PC's a gaming platform to begin with

Me neither, and I've never bought a console with 10,000 new releases per year. Marketing this against the Switch should be a piece of cake. More power, vastly more games, better prices, return games you don't like, the list goes on and on. It's a marketer's dream.
This is also the most excited I've ever been for something like this.

Considering the success of the Nintendo Switch, I'm surprised it took this long for Valve to tap into the mobile gaming market. Perhaps they were waiting for the right hardware and technology to be developed in order to replicate the hardware-intensive demands of PC gaming?
Yup that's right. They wanted it to be a handheld PC, not a low spec mobile console. They were limited by the current hardware so they had to wait a while.

I've used steam for 12 years now. The steam deck has essentially become my main console these days for playing indie games on the couch hanging out with my family. It was a smash hit in my opinion.

He wants to make money, just like any business owner.
The difference is that Valve is privately owned and aren't beholden to shareholders, so they don't need to keep chasing bigger numbers.
As long as they're consistently profitable they can keep doing what they're doing, and if something doesn't do as well as they hoped, they can simply move on to new ideas.

It's going to be amazing to bring non-PC gamers into the PC space with this, being basically a nintendo switch, but a PC. It's exciting!
Gabe is so amazing more CEOs need his mindset, makes steam deck open for any software to use or upgrades.
You know. The difference is. Valve is a private company. And is still printing money. Even though Gabe loaded himself up well over the years together with his co founders. These risky endeavors would never be possible if Valve was not what it is now. This right here is the ultimate investment risk you can take as a game company. The development if this thing must have cost quite a bit.
You speak the truth. But what does that not explain is why other companies like Microsoft, Apple or others are not experimenting like Valve. Unlike them, they just make more money printers and refuse to innovate.

exactly. only valve drones would think this will be nintendo handheld tier sales. the truth is, PC gaming is too complex for the average gamer and very mouse & keyboard dependent which the average gamer dislikes. They flock to Nintendo for handhelds. Also exclusives - PC hasnt had great exclusives for over 20 years. Noone but hardcore valve fans will buy this. No serious PC gamer will buy a 650$ PC with 2013 specs in 2022.

Valve pushing for evolution not many companies do especially in the gaming industry so really great job by them on this product so far!
Steam was practically a monopoly and they have as fanatic and loyal a fanbase as something like Bethesda but they don't really exploit their position and they seem to genuinely want to contribute back, like for any negatives they have compared to other massive platforms and companies on par with this they are absolute saints. Like think of the wealth, the reach, the shear power of Valve can you think of a nicer company that wields as much power as them?

If valve are going the direction with Half-Life that people have theorized that they're going in (with Alyx centred games being VR and Gordon games being traditional), then this handheld could be a great thing for those Gordon games to be built for.

@@e14ee "fail like all steam product" lol, let's put steam's products aside and just remind you that steam is right now (and has been for a couple years, even a decade and a couple years if i'm not wrong) the biggest PC Game store and client/launcher.
Valve and Gabe have such a reasonable outlook for their business and PC gaming and always try to think from the gamer's perspective. Not all their endeavors worked great but they are constantly evolving and learning. Imagine a company like Epic making a hardware and allowing Steam on it... in no universe this happens.
That's the great thing about Valve. Where Epic is using money from U-E and Fornite to create exclusives to "force" people onto their platform, Valve is using that money to create something useful for the player to come by themselves. The end is the same but the path is very different.

Despite expectations not all CEOs are quite so on top of things at a company, Gabe really sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Which sounds like it should be obvious for a man in his position, but isn't always the case with some of these massive companies.
Valve is still not some giant corporation. It is privately owned company of several hundred people.
Well most CEOs are there to make money, burn the company down, and go to the next one.
