  • Valve is responsible for some of the most iconic games in gaming history. So where’s Half-Life 3? It doesn’t make sense. But when you take a look at Valve’s history, it all becomes clear. And there’s still hope we might get the game we’ve been waiting a decade for.

I believe Valve's jump from games to hardware was absolutely necessary because it brought fourth a new era of handheld gaming. The Steam Deck was a HUGE push to make other companies pop up and develop handhelds besides just Nintendo and I think that technology wouldn't have advanced as fast without it.

I do agree with valve advancing to hardware. For a company as rich as them it does seem nessecary to stay in the loop
      BUT
Left Team fortress 2 to die to update drought and a bot crisis, now they shove tacky slop into it every 3-5 months.
Left half life sitting on a platter for 13 years and when they finally did something it was a VR exclusive(Still a good game but a kick to the many half life fans who don’t own headsets).
Left 4 Dead 2’s last major update was 3 years ago which was community made. They also scrapped L4D3 completely.
Portals last(Major title) installment was 12 years ago.
I’m fine with valve focusing on hardware but Jesus Christ they really need to pay SOME attention to their properties that are played by millions if not BILLIONS each year.
The only two games they remotely keep up are Dota and Counter strike because of how massive they are. If valve were to suddenly stop caring people would start an even bigger outcry.

    1. Valve co-developed Left 4 Dead with Turtle Rock Studios, they committed roughly 100 staff members to its development and were involved throughout its life cycle. To say it was made by Turtle Rock is inaccurate.

I think the scarcity is part of what makes Valve's games so good.
They're not being forced to develop a game they don't want to produce.
The fact that they can produce it on their own time, especially when they get to flex their latest innovations in games technology, seems to be what gives Valve games their polish and loved jank.

I think the main things that makes valve so good is that they just know their customers better than anyone else, they are willing to do things just for the sake of making things better for the consumer and they try to add or improve things that you didn't even know you needed. For example, a relatively recent update added some new features in the steam overlay such as being able to take notes while playing or pinning windows to show in game, this is something I think most people wouldn't think they would need until it's there and they realise how convenient it is, but this directly doesn't make them any money. They do what they can to improve their service as much as possible because they know by providing the best service with the best features for their consumers they will end up making more money.

Valve is focusing on making Windows Compatibility Tools for Unix and Unix-like systems since 2012. They're the ones who made gaming on Unix systems as good (sometimes even better, for example; Dying Light on Laptops) than gaming on Windows because theyve made Proton and contribute money and code to the Wine project. Windows Compatiblilty Tools help devs and unix gamers, so, I assume when they perfect that in a couple of years (hoping that microsoft doesnt make a big change in their NT Kernel), well most likely be seeing Half Life 3.

we won't see HL3 from that. That is not the type of technology they show off in their games. It's not really visible and doesn't really change gameplay other than the fact that it can be played on Linux. HL1 showed off their GoldSrc engine, with scripted sequences, more advanced animations, and unprecedented levels of interactivity. HL2 showed off their Source engine, with incredible (at the time) graphics and a real time physics engine. HLA showed off their Source 2 engine and how well they've made it work with VR, with incredible graphics (given that it runs well in VR) and a new physics engine built by them. HL3's new technology being "it runs on Linux despite being developed for Windows" doesn't sound very impressive, even if it is.
We'll see HL3 once they really have something new to show. And once they are confident enough to continue the story...

I think the part where Valve let the community do it for them is a little misleading, they really work and create the titles, sometimes changing almost everything in the project (this is the case of Portal, the only thing from the original project is you go through a portal and exit another). One good example is that Turtle rock studio claims they are the creators of Left 4 Dead, but if you count how much employees Valve had in Left 4 Dead, you could easily say its a Valve game, loved by players and commercial success. When you compare to what games Turtle Rock did alone after they split with Valve, only commercial failures (Evolve and Back 4 Blood).
I think the best way to put it that Valve sees the potential in other developers work, hire them and work together to bring something amazing.

This is the comment I was hoping to see. Valve developed L4D in cooperation with Turtle Rock, they committed somewhere around 100 employees to the project and were involved throughout its life cycle. They didn't just show up at the end to slap their logo on it, it's very much a Valve game. Like you said, this is obvious enough when you just look at Turtle Rock's subsequent attempts to make a game without Valve's co-development.

Valve moved to VR before EGS was a thing, and Blizzard alwas had their own launcher...
Same for the SteamDeck, it can be traced back to the Steam Machines, way, way before EGS or any serious threat to Steam's dominant position (I'd argue that, currently, there still is no threat) .
Not only that, in their move to hardware they kickstarted their competition too. Oculus was basically kickstarted by Valve, HTC VR division was kickstarted by Valve, and Microsoft VR efforts lived only thanks to Valve supporting them, to the point of having the Reverb G2 basically borrow half the design from the Valve Index. Even other companies like Sony prototype their own VR systems using Valve's lighthouses tracking for their prototypes.
Same for the Steamdeck, as open as it can be, no secret sauce, they even ported the handheld interface to windows to replace Big Picture, allowing competitors to use it for their Windows based handhelds.
PS Even in the digital storefront market Valve helped competitors by giving free keys to devs to sell on other, competing, stores. I've bought more games for my Steam library on the Humble Bundle store than I did on Steam.

I think either of those things will 100% come with a HL3 and most likely in the next 2-3 years. I personally don't think the need for technology innovations will be necessary for them to make new games forever, and I don't think they've lost interest in being games developers entirely. What I do think is that Valve is at a little bit of an awkward spot in their growth as a company. The direction they seem to be moving in is to carve out their own place in the industry. They don't just want to be making games, they want to be making the hardware those games are played on. They want to be more like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but on an even bigger scale. Valve seems to be moving in the direction of not just existing on the PC games market, but being the hardware manufacturer for the PC's themselves. That's what the Steam Deck basically is; a portable handheld gaming PC.
Once Valve has comfortably reached the point where they have reached their place in the hardware market, my speculation is that we will start to see a bit more of a trickle of games coming out again. Not a sudden surge like the floodgates opening or anything like that, but something of an end to the drought nonetheless, and all of these games will be made with Valve's own hardware in mind.

    1. Steam Deck (portable high-end graphics) - DONE
    2. Wireless VR Headset akin to Apple Pro quality (light weight, processing streamed from the steam deck)
    3. Orange Cube (Half Life 3 VR, Team Fortress 3 VR, Portal 3 VR)

Every Company that sees the first billion dollars is gonna get "lazy". Valve is no exception. If they were true and honest "Gamers" actually caring about games, whether they work on other projects or not, they could atleast give "their" games an Update/Fix or something for a breath of fresh air. Best example: TF2's current situation. Bots, cheaters, a few bugs here and there, weapon balancing. Same with CSGO's cheater problem. VAC isn't up to date anymore. I hope they go back to the roots and approach these issues on the games which made them famous in the first place... Even if Steam makes them billions every year...

Valve also give out quite a bit of money to Linux developers from Kernel development to the KDE Desktop. I have a feeling they are going to release more Linux devices, probably have another go at a console like PC, it would make a lot of sense a lot of people are put off with PC due to having to deal with the OS. An added benefit is much of the stuff just runs better under Linux, it's getting to be a joke now compatibility layers run games with less stutter than actual Windows which is insane.
    Thanks Valve.

Valve doesnt make a new game mostly a half life game until they know that said game will push the limits on gaming.
Half life 1 pushed fps games as a whole.
Half life 2 showed off game physics possibilities.
And most recently half life alyx which showed that vr games have potential to be just as good as flatscreen.
I hate to say it as i loved the half life games but half life is kinda a glorified tech demo. Pushing/showing game advancements

I think half life 3 will be VR related and they will probably want a glove type control piece and maybe some for the feet. They want to leap forward not baby stems seeing as steam is them. I really believe they have gone as far as they can go with first person shooters.
I think steam really wants to do something like "ready player one". Something like a full body suit that's like the movie industry that could track the complete body. That way character creation could be a huge part of the game maybe something like cyberpunk could benefit from that.
I imagine a game where you're able to do near limitless motion in a space to control the game. I think the ultimate goal is a body tracking system for all VR games and could be the next valve half life game.

artifact from a gameplay standpoint i would argue is not a miss. in fact it was fantastic. but the problem with it is the target audience for it does not care. they were marketing it as a "DOTA 2 card game" but DOTA players don't give a shit about some card game. they just want to play some more dota. and the fact that it's paid also limits the potential player base. i mean hearthstone is free why not try that? and all of this is coming from a 5k hour dota player. i'm not saying it's not valve's fault that it failed, but the game is doomed from the start. if IRCC they dint even advertised it.

You actually debunk your own point. Hearthstone got card game players to play it despite being based on RTS games and WoW. Which they would not give a shit about that universe but that didn't stop them from playing it. Artifact was flawed as hell and everyone could see it.

  • @derram0k

I honestly consider Half-life 3 to be a worthy sacrifice for the massive improvements Valve has made to PC gaming as a whole.
Remote Play Together adds online play to games that never supported online multiplayer. As long as the game has two players, you can play it online because of Steam.
Steam Input brings gamepad support to every game on Steam, and makes them customizable to a degree that gives even cheap controllers premium features.
Because of the Deck, Big Picture Mode is now essentially a fully fledged console OS. You can set up a living room gaming machine and the only thing you have to do to have a fully functional front-end is install Steam.
Proton has made it so I don't even check compatibility for games before I buy them anymore, I honestly just forget that I'm using Linux and these games are made for Windows.
We might have lost 12-15 hours of an interesting game and the conclusion of a story, but what we've gained is priceless. And also less price since they're all free features, most of which console players have to pay a subscription for.

  • @flaagan
    @flaagan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Speaking as someone who spent time in the game industry both as a studio and indie dev, considering all the turmoil as of late with studio shutdowns and IPs being canned, Valve should put some of their money into making a "Steam for game devs", a way for small / indie studios to be able to fund their projects. It would create an even bigger market of games for Valve to sell on Steam, and would help ensure the industry doesn't create miserable living conditions for the people actually working on the games.
