With the Mandalorian season finale dropping yesterday, we finally got a good look at the season’s big bad.
Working from the shadows in typical Star Wars fashion, Moff Gideon has been behind the entire arc of the season, secretly hunting Baby Yoda and using his puppet The Client to get the creature in order to achieve his goals.
But who is the character and how does he have one of the most valuable weapons in the entire Galaxy?
Well throughout this, we’re gonna be breaking down everything that you need to know about Moff Gideon. We’ll be discussing his backstory, role before he was promoted to being a Moff and giving our theories on how he came to possess the Darksaber.
There will be heavy spoilers here so if you haven’t had a chance to watch episode eight yet and don’t want to know what happens then I highly suggest that you turn off now.
Moff Gideon’s First Appearance
We actually got our first glimpse of Moff Gideon way back at the end of Episode 5 of The Mandalorian. This episode revolved around Mando tracking down a dangerous bounty with a fresh faced mercenary named Toro played by Jake Cannavale. This put them on the warpath with a dangerous rogue imperial soldier named Fennec Shand.
Though the two managed to take her down the episode ended with a mysterious character approaching her body and from this little glimpse, many were convinced that this was Boba Fett making a return.
The Imperial Security Bereau
We also learn that before being promoted to the rank of Moff, Gideon was a member of the Imperial Security Bureau or ISB for short. This was a law enforcement branch and intelligence agency of the Empire that pretty much worked as an Internal Affairs Agency. They were in charge of State Security and Gideon was tasked with weeding out those who may be disloyal to the cause before they defected to the Rebellion.
In order to achieve a position in the ISB, Imperial Officers have to show staples of Loyalty towards the Empire and thus only the most dedicated are picked to join their ranks.
The Darksaber History
That brings us to our next question. How is it that Moff Gideon was able to obtain the Darksaber?
Well, we do discover in Episode 8 that during his time in the ISB, Gideon was tasked with making sure that Mandalore and it’s people remain loyal to the Empire and that he took part in a massacre of the planet’s population that was called ‘The Night Of A Thousand Tears.’ This Great Purge pretty much wiped out the majority pf the planet and sent those who survived into hiding.
Gideon was so instrumental in this Genocide that Mando even knows of Gideon based purely off reputation and his actions during this purge.
Moff Gideon Explained
When it comes to the ranking of Moff, this is a high position within the Empire that actually grants the officer with the position a sector of space that they have to Govern.
Though Gideon is not a Grand Moff as we’ve seen in film’s like A New Hope with Grand Moff Tarkin, he still possesses a wealth of control and though it’s never explicitly stated, it is likely that Gideon rules over the sector of space that Navarro exists in.
This is likely why he was behind The Mandalorian extinction. We know that they were laying low on the Planet and as it’s in his sector he probably dealt with their downfall personally.

Moff Guideon is much closer to the OG trilogy's approach to the empire. Calm, methodical, and cold. Not the screaming emotional leaders portrayed now. I prefer this.

I love how competent the Moff is. He comes off as intelligent, levelheaded, ruthless, and just downright dangerous. This is a man who will not crack under pressure, nor will he relent in pursuing whatever he wants. The man was only in two episodes and he already created a commanding presence. I believe that is all that needs to be said on him right now.

@@Lewis5020 I don't know if you ever played Shadows of the Empire for N64 or read the book but you actually get to square off with IG-88 in the game.
I did, and that part of the game was hard, but I don't particularly remember how IG-88 moved, tbh. It's glorious on TM eps in which IG-11 fought. I can't express enough admiration for Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and the other writers.

I thought Mando was going to be the One to go ham. IG-11 five minutes in successfully demonstrated to everyone in the Outer Rim how to remove imps with no mercy. Literally stole the show for me.

Giancarlo plays bad guys very well. He was great on the TV series, Revolution.

Disney should pay very close attention to this show. I love the character development, cinematography and general pace. Doesn't seem that a super high chimp is in control of editing.

Mon Mothma is the reason the First Order was able to grow. She refused to hunt down all imperial remnants and she disarmed almost immediately after the Galactic Civil War.
@Alex I feel like the shows and games are meant the things that happened that ended up causing the creation of the first order and a lot of other things, but people tend to not listen and get all angry it's quite obvious that these shows are going to get connections with the movies just like the rebels TV show had connection to the creation of the rebel alliance.
I swear I'm getting tired of that hate, in the end of the day there's books and showy that explains everything, unless they want a 10 hour movies of Rey trying to find out why the first order was created and etc.

I love Giancarlo Esposito ever since I was kid seeing him in Do The Right Thing but damn is he a phenomenal actor or what? .every time I see his name I go Oooohhh..I'm on Episode 7 of the Mandalorian right now so I haven't seen him in this yet but I just got finished watching season 1 of Godfather Of Harlem and he mos. Def deserves a Emmy for that .I'm sure he'll be amazing in this as well..I'd be shocked to see otherwise

Moff Gideon is the best Star Wars villain I’ve seen in quite some time, excited to see what becomes of him. I wonder if he would make any movie crossover appearances.
He probably would have some connections in the creation of the first order, the show is good because it explains a lot of things that the movie couldn't explain and I like that it makes everything get connected and makes things a lot more enjoyable.

The reason that I believe Cara Dunn is Moff Gideon Daughter
:SPOILER ALERT:
Their is something that's not making sense to me. When Mando was hired to find Baby Yoda he didnt know he was looking for a baby but someone who was 50 years old. Now he was told to kill the target and that order was also giving to the other Bounty Hunter Guild Members "IG-11,etc" who were sent out to find him too. Now Mando was the only Bounty Hunter that was giving a "bring back alive choice", and this was only do to the fact that Doctor Pershing walked in unannounced and from the look of the reaction from the Stormtroopers and the Client he was uninvited. When the Doctor walks in he speaks that killing the accet wasn't part of the deal, this lets us know Mando was the only one giving that option only because the Doctor walked in and the Client wanted him to believe that he gave the same choice to the others to bring the accet back alive, but we know this not to be true.
Now let's skip forward to the last Episode. If the Empire wanted Baby Yoda dead in the first place why did they try to negotiate with Mando and his friends? Why didnt they just blow the building up? They had the fire power? and this would of achieved the same effect that they asked for from the get go. Moff Gideo gives us the line "You have something I want. You may think you have some idea of what you are in possession of, but you do not. In a few moments, it will be mine. It means more to me than you will ever know" this line is planted to make us think he's talking about Baby Yoda but I think he's talking about someone else, I think he's talking about Cara Dunn, who I believe is his Daughter and she's the only reason Moff Gideon hasn't blown up the Tavern that they are hiding in.
Moff Gideon main objective was to kill Baby Yoda, it always has been and any orders he may have giving to his troops reflected the same desire "terminate on the spot". When the Client is speaking to Moff Gideon through the Hologram he informs him that the baby is sleeping, which could be a inside term for "dead" but then Moff Gideon tells him to check again and then lays waste to the Tavern. Now why would Moff Gideon kill a high ranking and loyal Imperial Member and his men? It's simple, because the Client betrayed and lied to Moff Gideon. You see the Client captured Baby Yoda alive and this was not to be the way, he was ordered to kill him. I think he lied to Moff Gideon and Gideon found out after learning that Mando delivered the accet alive only to recapture or "Rescued" Baby Yoda and then Fleed the planet.
Moff Gideon realized that his loyal Officer has just messed up an important order. Moff Gideon ordered him to recapture the accet but this time alive if possible so he himself may verify that the target is dead, but when the Client tells Moff Gideon that the target is sleeping Moff Gideon orders his troops to lay waste to the building and the shootout at the Tavern begins...only to have it abruptly stop? Moff Gideon shows up asking for their surrender... surrender? why? Blow it up now? Whats stopping him? Even if they have to later dig through the rubble to find the targets crushed body It would still mean it is dead so why stop? I think it was the mentioning of the name Cara Dunn that stopped the raid, she may be his Daughter, this would explain why she was so scared at learning that Moff Gideon was outside, not scared because she was a ex-Rebel but scared at being re-captured by the Empire and her Father which was the reason she ran away to start with. Now it could be possible that she is a Imperial Agent or Double Agent, it seems that Moff Gideon knew a lot of inside information that only a inside spy could have leaked to him about our Merry Band of Baby Y👶da protectors, but either way I believe she is far more important to this story and Moff Gideon then we are led to believe.
This is a great theory! It makes sense the way you explain it, and it would be awesome to see this come to life!

This is false. Sabine Ren gave the saber to Bo Catan at the end of Rebels. Gave. They didn't fight over it, she put it in her hand.

Moff "take the afternoon to think about-it" Gideon. He has a small army surrounding them and then gifts them a huge chunk of time to engineer a work-around. I practically fell out of my chair when Esposito dropped that ridiculous line along with all that fancy dialogue. The writers went "Broadway" with Moff's loquacious ultimatum...blah. If one lone droid can mess-up the Storm Troopers so badly, it renders the entire human-side of the Imperial Army pointless. All they did was get shot and fall-down. Warmed my heart though when Mando warmed up to the Nursemaid Robot, who then sacrificed himself....a real touching moment 🤧. I love my toaster too.
Watched the last episode with a group of my cousins. When the Dark Saber showed up I "HOLY FUCK" 'ed really loud. Then I realized I was the only one in the room that knew the whole backstory to the Dark Saber and then I had to give a 5-10 min history lesson. Overall, the last episode was amazing and educational! lol

What about the spurs, the person at the end of episode 5 had spurs but Moff Gideon didn’t have the spurs in episode 7. Please explain.

I played Star Wars for years as a Mandalorian and now I want to play again! Maybe some hut ball with my flying hit man.
just checked imdb and moff is only listed in episode 7 and 8.
My son and I simultaneously shouted WOAH... He shouldn't have THAT! Which left my mother-in-law and my wife looking at us quizzically. So we had to pause, catch our breaths and explain. (And back it up to see it again!)
Am I the only one to think that Moff Gideon is a former mandalorian foundling him self, but was stripped from his helmet? I think it would add up pretty well if you think about it. I mean his armor, the dark saber (how/why keep it for so long with Vader and Palpatine around), his connections with the death troopers who are likely trained as mandalorian warriors, the hunt for baby Yoda. I think it makes a lot of sense. Also it is classic moviemaking to make similar protagonist/antagonist duos.

That wasn't Gideon in ep 5 ending. It's Cobb Vanth in Boba's Armor or Boba himself.
I'm excited to move forward with Gideon as the main antagonist. And I love the choice to cast Esposito in this role. Cool, emotionless villains are the best.
I wonder if Moff Gideon has aspirations to become like Vader. Not saying he's going to become a Sith Lord but maybe he sees Vader as a sort of Role Model. His breast plate looked similar to Vader's. His TIE fighter too. Just a thought.
