I imagine Yoda's species, "Yonam" let's call it, comes from a planet with higher gravity than Earth to explain their small yet strong stature. Generally hot, wet, and boggy surface with plentiful food sources to explain their amphibious features, big ears, green skin, and generally docile character. And less of an axis tilt producing less seasonality thereby producing less dynamism and competition, more balance, in the ecosystem. From that they evolved a more Buddhist spiritually centered around the peace, harmony, and balance which The Force, acting through life, can achieve.
Also to explain the slow aging process and big eyes I'm thinking their home world orbits close to a Red Giant which emits lots of radiation but has low luminosity. So their DNA must encode lots of error correction mechanisms thereby slowing their mitosis drastically. This would also mean they are slow to heal from injury which would feed back to their generally reserved temperament.

I always assumed that Yoda’s species is a byproduct of the force itself. Like it spontaneously generates a Yoda in response to threats of a considerable scale.
Literally in Clone wars we see Yoda wrestle with his dark side self.
It wasn't his species that kept him in the light, it was just his own will.

I think Yoda's species is the direct antithesis of the Sith species. Where the Sith are usually super exceptional in the dark side, Yoda's is super exceptional in the light. I think the force created them to one day face off as the heralds of their respective sides.

I would actually prefer Yoda's species to remain a mystical, magic, and unknown race like Lucas has said before. Though that is unlikely now, but we will see.
Lucas was involved in the 1st season of mandolorian, so I’m assuming if he still wants them to be unknown they’ll remain as such but he’s not directly in charge anymore so you never know 😂

I think the best way to handle it is to offer clues that raise more questions than answers. Yoda in a nutshell.
An explanation would be treated dismissively and become trading card fodder, but a mystery captures the heart and mind and endures forever.
Anyone ever think that, just like there is a Sith species for which the practitioners of the Dark Side are named, Yoda's species might be the Je'daii? (I know that is the name of an ancient order of force sensitives who sought balance, but perhaps it was named after Yoda's Species, just as the Sith were named after a race of dark side force senisitives).

They wouldnt necessarily be Jedi per say. More like an ancient race of force sensitives who worship the light side. For instance I doubt they would use lightsabers or anything like that. More like a planet of little green monks.

the jedi were always a multi-species thing. the sith species, aka the red sith, started off as sorcerers and alchemists, that got hella-advanced after some dark jedi got to their planet. the jedi werent always exclusively a light side order.

He may have become a master not as an adult. Like a prodigy child. I can see him growing into adulthood by year 175-200. Now him being 1 at 50 and then finding a growth spurt might need to be looked into.

You should read some of the books. One of my favorite books that gives some of Yoda's past is dark rendezvous. They tell you about his eating habits that tell you about how he almost went dark side.
Would be cool of Yoda's species is the opposite of the Sith species, like a ying yang scenario. Each side of the force has it's protectors.

I get wanting to keep his species name and home world a secret to have a little bit of mystery in the Galaxy Far Far Away but still I would like to know more about where Yoda comes from, who was his Jedi Master and how he became a Jedi Master. Even if we don’t get his homeworld and Species Name I’d still like a little more backstory than him just popping up in Episode 1 as a Grand Master.
