My Highlander 2 pitch:
The film begins in New Jersey 1985. The Kurgan fights and beheads Osta Vazilk. We then transition back in time and place to the land that would eventually become Russia. We meet Vitor and get to know him as a young man who is not initially evil. He has shades of grey. He has hopes and dreams as all men have. He discovers his immortality and we, the audience, follow his journey through the centuries intercutting with events in modern day NY 1985 and pre-existing footage already shot for the original movie, the difference being we are seeing things from the Kurgan’s perspective.
Clancy Brown, Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery Roxanne Heart, and Beattie Edney would all return. We get to see the Yung Dol Kim fight.
As the film progresses we gradually see the events and situations that change and shape Vitor until he becomes the evil character we know from the original movie.
It's interesting hearing about Joe's ideas about a Highlander 3 set on Zeist because there were vague plans for something like that at one point. I don't think plans got too far but apparently it would have dealt with MacLeod return to Zeist to overthrow the corrupt government and was tentatively titled "Highlander III: The Reckoning". Of course after the awful reception of H2 in the US this idea was totally abandoned. I've always wondered how far they got developing the idea.
Who cares?...were just glad the further stupidity, shitting on Queen's Emotional songs, wasn't furthered even more.
If that's the route you're going, then a Watcher story sounds like what you're looking for. Now that Connor is mortal with total telepathic awareness, he would sense the people watching him and "introduce" himself.
We can get all of the origin flashbacks, including the fights between Ramirez and the Kurgan, and a present day story of how the Watchers want Connor dead. "Too much power"
If you want to go the Highlander 3 route, I've got a whole rewrite for ya Lol
I know that Highlander 2 is the one we don't talk about but I can't help but feel drawn to it due to it's ideas. I mean come on reincarnation as a different way of Immortality,cyberpunk, Connor Macleod having to fight corporate greed in order to save mankind and redeem himself it's stuff that should have made an amazing sequel but alas.
The ideal sequel for me would be this a new protagonist has visions and tries to figure out who the person in his visions is and why are people after him. Eventually we learn that Connor died but he is reincarnated in this new protagonist and has to find a man who has been using ancient tech in order to find the champion of the Prize.We find out that The Game is ongoing and has been won and reset throughout the eons and said man uses this ancient tech to find whoever wins the Prize to obtain their Quickening and keep himself Immortal while also controlling the world by using the Prize and is able through the Quickening he has his own abilities. The new protagonist has to find a way to accept Connor and use his skills and abilities to stop the bad guy and hopefully save the world and end the Game once and for all
This feels a tad Disney Star Wars-esque, but if you have a new generation of immortals, you could have a story where either they seek Connor out, or he seeks them out to become a bit of a Ramirez mentor figure to them. Maybe one betrays the others, and you have a conflict to build something new forward with. You wouldn't necessarily need to off Connor, but it could be a strong instigating point for the conflict.
I struggle with the concept that a group of talented writers sat down and bounced ideas about for a while and they disregarded all the ideas apart from the let's make them aliens from a planet called Zeist idea.........
Highlander 2 was the only continuation of the story that didn't retcon/rewrite the end of the first movie🤔
I have a better What If...? for you: What If we actually got The Extended Zeist Cut of H2 released in 1991? What If the franchise continued forward after H2 without disregarding it?(which, if you notice in "The Gathering" episode of The Series, they were attempting to hedge their bets on that with Connor's line "Enough power to rule this planet forever"😮) What If you use The Source as a continuity solidifying tie-in to The Animated Series?🤷
I actually wrote an 80 page script treatment back in 1995 titled "Highlander: The Prize"
I personnally love Highlander 2, it's the real sequel to me, the other are soft reboots.
I haven't seen the "Extended Zeist Cut" but I can imagine what it is, having seen all the different cuts of the movie. I'm interested in your script :)
I have also heard about "Highlander The Reckoning", the original Highlander 3, set on Zeist, which was unfortunately never made.
The laziest thing in the world is taking out Zeist.
