You can adjust the start setting on this esc. Alternatively an inexpensive hobbywing esc and program card will solve the cogging issue virtually completely.
Nice to see wltoys beginning to introduce brushless versions into a successful lineup.. can't wait for them to figure out the issues and really dominate the lower price end of the market, I hope they succeed, really I do... big name brands are good, if you have the $$$
Just buy it as of now it's not way pricier than brushed. And swap the motor/esc for sensored. Almost every sensorless have cogging on start, some more some less, some let you adjust timings. Idk if this esc are programmable.
We have the 124019 and 144001. The 124 is seriously more durable as the 144 has lost a wheel, broken a shock tower and suffered lots of little breaks, so it's now loaded up with aluminum replacement parts. The 124's only issue is (as Amber noted) the wing in back. It is currently taped back together, but I have a full replacement body for it. If the 124 came in two colors, I would have gotten two, one for my daughter and one for her twin brother, but I thought the 144 would be the same build quality. It is not.
Just bought the purple one 2nd rc car car in two weeks pretty addictive but This purple one is awesome! Even people who are more experienced are telling me it’s great!
Don't sleep on the 124018 either, basically the same rig just a sand rail type body. I love mine, and the extra roll cage on the top is just extra protection for when I go off my ramp, Jet Li.
Got a 124019 currently, and a 124017 on its way to me as i type. The 19 is great fun, but its so fun and fast out of the box. For the price wtf get them both!
I agree with you both.. I did upgrade my 19 with brushless system. Have not tested the speed yet but mashing the throttle it pirouettes on one rear wheel lol I use the 18 for bashing.
The diffs are dry on arrival, take the covers off and add some grease and the cogging issues go away. The body is high on one side because the motor wiring pushes against it, simply cut the zip ties and reroute the motor wires beneath the body shell so that it sits flat on the chassis.
My boy has the 124019 and loves it. I've ordered the brushless one a few weeks ago, not recieved it yet so was great to see your side by side review. 1St one I've seen. With the brushless version, would upgrading to a 3650 size motor (same kv & pinion) fix the cogging? Also how were you able to run both cars at the same time? Usually one transmitter controls two cars.
im bout to buy the 124017 and a 3s battery and i found that the 124017 esc is adjustable and u can set the start delay so i will probably buy that with a iron gearing pack and full metal upgrade kit
Do the instructions mention if the ESC is programmable? I wonder if some settings are maybe set too soft and could be altered to increase grunt/torque off the line? If not, would a higher spec replacement ESC make any difference? Would be easier now you don't have to change all the other electronic parts at the same time.

This is the greatest car on the market currently. Low price, huge speed, HUGE sand climber and can fit all 1/10 parts. I haven't yet broken a single part personally, but it is very easy to break, so if you don't know your repairs or suck at driving, that's your loss because with a price of only 100 bucks from China, this model is an absolute steal.
The best way to fit your body is to us velcro Put the velcro along the edge of the chassis and on the inside of the body to where they meet together That's the way we did it back in my racing days No more having to keep up with body pins lol and its much easier to manage the body ✌️

I think the battery is slightly underpowered they're a very low c rating I think they're 25c so there's not enough kick to overcome the gearing and the resistance from the grass.

I've ZD 9021v2 and love it, but just ordered the brushed her of the WLtoys buggy to thrash around with without worries of the cost of any brakages and it's smaller. I'll probably get larger wheels though.
Disclaimer: I know virtually nothing about RC cars. I love RC anything, can’t afford to get in to it though. I’m just making an uneducated observation… Would the lag in the brushless one (if it was put in there on purpose) be like a kind of traction/launch control because of any extra torque it has over the brushed one? I might be overthinking. Second video of yours that I’ve watched and won’t be the last. Great stuff!
I thinking about getting a couple of these for my son and I to race around. I however in the UK have an easier time getting spares for Tamiya models can you recommend any Tamiya models that are similar to these cars? I assume you have to order these WlT cars from China?

If you are going to upgrade everything go straight to lc racing or tacon version.. better quality, more gearing options and will be cheaper in long run. Only do wl if not upgrading. I went upgrade route and wish someone gave me this advice

LATE TO THE GAME. But i must mention, THE 017 IS CRAZY FAST. QC was good out of e box, had to throttle down 50%, just to be able to handle better at a REALLY short shorttrack. Many tumbles, 15 batts later, and all i got was a bent dogbone. 5min bending repair, and its back to e track! Best fun iv had on a 1/12 scale. Love/hate e tyres. Gonna keep them on e dirttrack, as it will just wear down too fast on tarmac. VERY REASONABLE PRICE and great transmitter too. Steering trim and speed expo is all that i need. By e way, range is good. it goes far enough till i cant see it. A good 100m easy. Well worth e price. May even swap e RX over to other cheaper cars for e range that this tx/rx offers. YOUR FIRST HOBBY-GRADE RC BUGGY 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽

The problem for both of these buggies actually is that while these are at 120 and 140€ respectively, the 144001 is down to 85€ which at that price is just unbeatable, i.e. I don't see how the price can be worth is - just my 2 cents.
Almost every sensorless brushless do cogging. It's not an wltoys issue, it's the principle that the esc has to have the motor turning to know in what windings to put the current/frequency. The only way to have non-cogging is to get sensored motor/ESC wich led to way better start and control. But, for the price... And the fact that cogging will only occur when getting of a complete stop...

From this week on the 017 has been upgraded with a smaller pinion and more powerful motor. Cogging should be solved but seeing is believing. I've got one on the way. I would love to see the kiwi's do another review for the 017.
Brushed motor's have the tourq, brushless has the horsepower...in the end its all in what you want from this car...plus the 124017 has some minor upgrades. Just look how they used bolts on the rear bulkhead it holds the rear together better 🤟😆
Good comparsion! The brushless version for some reason uses the same huge pinion as the brushed version and is definatly way over geared. I use a small 2845 racestar combo in my conversion but with the 17 tooth pinion from a Wltoys A959 and a modified motor mount. Runs beautifully, no cogging and loads of grunt!
@@neilaldridge9261 I got the pinion from banggood. Its from a wltoys a959. The motor mount has pre drilled holes and cut out for a smaller motor, but you still have to elongate one of the holes. Check out the channel "RC Mod Squad". Thats where I got the info from..
Well it depends on the kv of the motor, you can have lower kv and bigger pinion and higher kv with smaller pinion. Usually the latter gives less cogging due to less start torque needed.

Purple one looks better IMO. Brushless one definitely jumps better, but I think I'd still go with the brushed one.

That's exactly why the "lag" acceleration when throttle. The brushless motor, and the esc its working with really high ratio gear.

brushless motors suffer less from wear and it is more efficient than brushed, so longer drive time. U just forgot to mention

I got the 124019 and the spur gear is plastic. It broke in 2 months. I upgraded it metal spur gear. Runs like a beast.

I bumped a curb at half throttle with the 019 and the wheel broke off along with a couple other components. Not as durable as it seems.

I wish it was that easy, but the motor mount is fixed.... so not as easy as just dropping a tooth or two

I got the purple brushed one including delivery for £75 the equivalent to about €87 I couldn’t be happier it’s tough and pretty quick.
