    I envy you guys being able to travel around there. I visited many new places and islands on my last trip, and had lots of new ones planned for my next trip. CDO, lligan , then over to Ormoc and Tacloban and Southern Leyte etc . All put on hold for now. Enjoy your road trip, wherever you go, make the most of the less busy roads.

    I love Lapu-Lapu, and Cebu overall. I haven't been since Dec 2019 due to COVID but I'll be back as soon as travel there is doable. But........ Cebu traffic is absolutely awful. From the Shangri-La to IT Center was a 45-50 min drive, and that wasn't rush hour. It used to take 30mins +/- to get through the traffic light over the bridge out of Lapu-Lapu. Since you both talked about traffic lights let's say that they take 3 minutes or is it 2:30 to change (yes they have a countdown timer folks) and that just makes things worse as the traffic backs up so badly.

    Another reason for Cebu City over most other places is Grab cars. Plus Food Panda, plenty of taxis and rental cars galore.

    Glad that you two are having a good experience. I was there a couple of years ago and the traffic and pollution were very bad, but not as bad as Manila, of course. They are building new condos everywhere, but not any improved transportation so it will only get worse, I suppose.

    The honest truth is it is extremely difficult to travel in the Philippines. If you live in a larger city, it can take you hours to travel a couple of miles. The ferry's to the islands are reasonably efficient and comfortable, but the booking-in process is stressful, confusing, and a rip-off. Once you arrive at the terminal if it is a busy day, the scene will resemble the movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. I am not joking...
    Fortunately, when you arrive at your destination, things will improve, and you will see the brighter side of the Philippines. The Philippines is a magical place, and I love it. But, living their long-term requires a 'Zen-like attitude and an acceptance of incongruities beyond meaningful belief.. I would recommend occasionally returning to your home country for a 'refresher'.

    In the past heard that a negative of living in Mactan was traffic congestion on the bridge between Cebu...seems like either thats improved or the effect of no tourists at the moment

    • @knarlisrocks
      @knarlisrocks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you hit the nail on the head with the traffic. When I stayed in Mactan the traffic to Cebu was terrible. There is only two bridges and they frequently close one which restricts movement more. Once the airport opens back up traffic will be awful again.

    • @GiointhePhilippines

      Very congested but a new bridge being completed this year will alleviate some of that traffic!

    I much preferred living in Mandaue (I used to walk to Park mall etc). Didn't always feel safe going to some parts of Cebu City itself. Pollution in Mandaue was pretty dreadful too unfortunately and the black smoke belching out from jeepneys. 🤣

    Great interview! I was strongly considering Mactan Island, (Lapu-Lapu City) but after seeing this interview and some of your other videos on Newtown Beach and Mandaue City, (close to Lapu-Lapu City) I'm set on making it my area to live when I finally end up moving out there, once things open back up.

    Thank you for a great interview. I was looking at Dumaguete also, but decided on Cebu City because of the same reasons he stated. I am very jealous -- you guys are THERE! I've been trying to get into the country since December 2020., and now the Government says NO FOREIGNERS up to at least April 19th. I was in Manila in March of 2020 just when the Pandemic hit and got stuck there for awhile, but finally got a flight out.

    I’ve been thinking about going to the Philippines to live. Cebu city looked like a good place to live but a lot of expats seem to prefer the smaller areas like Dumaguete and they’re really happy with a low cost of living. I’m a city dweller now and I like the quiet and comfort of living in my condo. I could afford $2.5K+ per month, do you think that budget would allow me to live in a nice, furnished apartment and have nice food, ac etc? I’m retired and older but in pretty good shape and health, I’d also like the idea of finding a girl friend which is not simple or easy in the states, specially if you’re older… I’ve dated much younger women here but long term relationships with the age difference is just not workable in the USA. I’m meeting a Philippine friend tomorrow to pick his brain, and maybe get some local contacts when I get there. I’d like to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    Be prepared. I live on the Sunshine Coast of northeast Australia. I am used to the humidity, as it is a sub-tropic region. But, the humidity in the Philippines will kick your ass if you are not prepared. Don't arrive from Fargo, and head off to the provinces in anticipation of tropical bliss and a suntan. Stay nearby to AC and limit your activities until you acclimatize. If you plan to stay more than a couple of weeks in a resort, the Philippines is the wrong place for those in poor health, as the ambulance may never arrive, and the medical system is 'pay as you play'.

    Drivers, Oh yes, in areas on Siargao Island, some (not all) drivers do not have a license, and those that do, often have never read the driver's handbook and not taken the test, they just slip an extra 2,000 PHP to the official and get their driver's license right away, knowing nothing about the official rules of the road - FACT!
