Paul , very interesting interview. So glad the gentleman was a military veteran as I am, plus he looks around my age too. I am 58 years old. My desires and plans are to retire in the Philippines in about four (4) years. The two (2) narrowed places for me have been Manila area and Cebu area. Especially now hearing about the military veteran connection in Cebu. This is really great for me. Hard to believe it has been since 1991 when I was station at Clark Air Base, Philippines. Thanks for this interview. From US American Air Force Security Police Military Veteran.

I've been visiting Cebu City area and Mactan for nearly 25 years now so I know what it's like and the changes are nothing short of amazing.
Watching this as I'm sitting on my suburban US patio Sunday evening it's amazing the ambient background noise in your video. This is one issue with Philippines that can be distressing and very difficult to avoid.

Like you discussed, trade-offs between living in Duma and Cebu. I think the plan might be to island hop to at least 3-4 islands (Duma, Cebu, Luzon, Palawan) minimum and than live at each of them for at least 3-6 months before deciding on what place best suites me and maybe settled down? Sounds like each island will have its pros/con and there may not be one place that meets all needs, but may have to go with the one that checks off most of the boxes. I agree that a place with good health care will probably be on the top of my list.

Cebu is unique among all places in the Philippines that no other places in the Philippines can beat. Cebu has a big city feel with all those modern conveniences like huge malls, wide variety of entertainment and dining options, modern hospitals, a wide variety of both man-made and natural attractions for relaxation and enjoyment, both clean white sandy beaches and scenic mountains are just minutes drive away from the city, both south and north getaways are just few hours drive, etc. The most obvious and the biggest advantage of Cebu over others is the air and sea connection several times daily to virtually all islands and major cities and provinces in be Philippines. The international airport also connects you several times daily to most major regional destinations across Asia for a short hop like Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Qatar, Dubai and even Los Angeles. No other place in the Philippines has all these advantages.

I went to a restaurant in Cebu one night and looked around and I saw about dozen expats in there with pinays. I thought this was strange to see so many expats in one area. Very true, the hospital in Cebu that is JCI approved is Chong Hue. Currently only 3 hospitals in PHL have this accreditation the other 2 are in Manilla (Makati Medical and SLMC) if you’re a vet with a service related disability, the VA has made great progress in improving access to care with local physicians.
The reason for choosing to seek treatment with a JCI accredited hospital is that they have passed the same standards that USA 🇺🇸 hospitals need to pass to receive CMS ( Medicare) reimbursement. FYI, not all USA hospitals pass this accreditation (78%) some get certification from the State or other accreditation organizations but Joint Commission is the Worlds Gold Standard.

I have lived in Southern Cebu for over 3 years now and have to say that driving is the same here as most places in the Philippines with exceptions to a few places. I put a car cam in immediately per advice from my other expat friends with 15 plus years experience while living in or close by the same area . I added better lighting to my SUV to see further ahead at night just for those who dont have rear or front lights that work and for those who do but dont drive with them on until 10ft away then turn them on. They pull directly out in front of you even when they do look first and see you coming most dont look. Pedestrians use the road as a side walk which anybody with any experience here knows roads are just wide enough to fit your car on except for the city's. They are doing road widening . The fact you come up on a motor cycle going slow and right in the middle and they are texting and the motorcycle who ignores the fact you right blinker is on and your starting execute a right turn and he decides he still has time to pass you on the right side. I do a lot of horn blowing myself and thank God mine isnt the roadrunner sound horn. It even makes my wife upset who you think would be use to all the crazy bad driving. Just telling facts and I would rather drive my car most of the time instead of my big orange bike with a neon yellow helmet because I'm in invisible to the car drivers here. Oh one more I just love how they feel it's ok to stage up to pass and are 2 or more feet in your lane and no shoulder on either side or tail gate you in a 6 car line and pass you expecting you to give right away between you and the car in front of you while the guy that was behind him is now almost in your trunk. Just so everyone knows this is not just me bellyaching , this is usually common conversation on a daily basis between the many expats in the area I live. I deal with it but making sure everyone knows it's basically the same across the islands.

I am from Germany, married to a Filipina. I retire in 6 to 7 years and I plan to move to the Philippines. Health care is the most important thing to think about. Me and my family will stay in our German health insurance. What my health insurance needs are doctor or hospital bills that they can read and put under their system of payment. Our first choice is Cebu. Nice that Cebu seems to have good medical service. Did you rent or buy a house there? My pension will be around 2500 $. We are also thinking about my wife having a small business there, maybe a coffee shop. Your video is very informative.

    • @lionhearted1969
      @lionhearted1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Gated subdivisions are more common in Mactan Island and they outnumber condo residences, for now. Condos are quieter for sure than economic subdivisions. If you want quiet living in a gated subdivision, choose those designed for middle-income and higher-income residents because they have stricter rules. There's already the anti-noise pollution law put in place just last year that criminalizes all forms of loud noise or sound pollution especially in residential areas. Now, I no longer hear karaoke and other noise pollution in my subdivision.

The Condos and apartments can be very noisy and it is the subdivisions that are quiet. I am happy to hear that there are new laws aimed at keeping the neighborhoods peaceful. I'll look at the middle income an higher-income subdivisions when I plan my trip. Thanks.

HI,,,i lived in IT Park for 3 years,,,I just moved back to USA to get my covid shots. I lived at Avida Towers and Asia Premier, Asia Premier has the nicest rooms. They just built a mall i IT park, it is a medium size mall. You have many places to eat in IT park within walking distance, and a few nice bars to eat and drink. If you are a light sleeper then just be careful, the walls are thin in most of the condos. Cockroaches also is a small problem, they come up through the plumbing in the bathroom. I always put covers on my shower drain, and kept my sink closed . More mosquitos at Asia Premier in the lobby and outside, i had no problems with mosquitos at Avida Towers. The prices have dropped for most condos in cebu, the covid virus made many foreigners leave. So you can get a nice price now, i bought and used wireless headphones for the noise. Goodluck

Cebu City is nasty. Overcrowded, dirty, polluted and the traffic is worse. My family still owned a 10 acre farm just outside the city and I'm not planning on retiring in Cebu. Maybe you you should go downtown Cebu in Colon and compare it Dumaguete then you have a fair comparison. From where you are sitting you cannot compare because you are pretty much in a resort. When you visited Pasil, Duljo and Ermita then you can tell us how clean really Cebu is? In my last 2 visit to Cebu City I didn't even bother to stop by at our house in the City. I stayed all the time in the hotel. Didn't want to deal with the traffic.

But let me add. I love it here, the beaches, the people, the country side. It's just very disappointing that trash isn't collected very well, and people just discard their refuse along the roads and in the fields.

There are at least 2 kinds of expats. As far as I can tell most expats want to live the same as in the west so they stick to tourist type places with lots of other expats. They seem to make the most videos. There are some expats who like to live like Filipinos and be away from other expats. So the concept of "perfect place" can only be from a limited understanding of the world. A conservative mind.

C'mon guys, let's be brutally honest, the only two reasons why so many foreigners want to live in the Philippines, are ...
    1. The english language
    2. The beautiful women
... and that's all. If the girls would not look so beautiful and if the folk would not speak english, then no foreigner would want to live in the Philippines.

I agree with you coming from a Western man. Western expats really don't have other purpose coming to a developing country other than exploit the young and often poorly or less educated local women who are often looking for a sugar Daddy. :-)

The healthcare and the infrastructure, and the internet has to get better and you have to have patience, and if you're not used to noise, I suggest buying a condo because everything is slow, and that includes the government don't complain about the government to Filipinos because it may not end well keep things to yourself, and if you want to live your Western lifestyle it's going to cost you got to be careful of the water you have to be careful the food and the Filipino people are litterbugs and they see you as a rich foreigner there's a local price and then there's the former price now you figure out which one you going to get 😂 take care and God bless

David right now its quite, however one of the commentars made a very good point,, once these condos fill up it will get noisy. Once of the problems here is the poor building standards standard, as an example there is NO sound insulations either in the side walls or the floors.
