      Some ribbon cables have misaligned copper wires internally and they short to neighbor cables. I'd check continuity at the end and split all pairs just to check if it solves the problem. Maybe an improvised twitter video could help solve the mystery

    • @joeclifford183
      @joeclifford183 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry I need an elaboration on this. I understand the point made but wouldn’t probing the solder joints on the board also be the same as probing the cable ends as they’re continuous all the way down? Just a noob to computer and other tech fixes but an electrician by trade trying to diversify my knowledge.

    • @sacerdor7467
      @sacerdor7467 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joeclifford183 Well if the issue is between the two points, like if the cable contains the issue, then you can identify the problem like that, but not when checking at the soldering points.

    Since you're doing so much diagnostic work, I'd suggest you pull the power button from an old case and keep it handy, then after you've disconnected the front I/O (or you're booting outside of a case) you can stick that switch onto the motherboard and use it to turn it on and off rather than poking at it with a screw driver.

    The reset switch is pretty much a redundant feature in cases these days. Which is why a lot of case manufacturers have repurposed it for LED control. I did see what appeared to be a dedicated LED button on the case so who knows for sure. Personally I would have just called the person, detailed the problem, and asked them if it would be ok to keep the reset switch unplugged. That way they get to keep the case they paid for, and the problem gets repaired for free. Another option would have been to see if you can find a replacement board for the front IO. Even then it would have been pennies on the dollar to fix.
    Great job, Greg! This one was an interesting niche problem.

    I recently built a system in a Fractal Meshify-C case and every time I inserted a usb stick or a microphone/headphone connector into the front panel ports the system would shut down. I contacted Fractal and they immediately sent me a now front panel board. After installing the new board the same problem occurred. I finally determined the front panel itself flexes when performing the aforementioned actions and caused the power button to be depressed. I disabled the power button for shutdown within Windows settings and that solved my problem. Fractal might consider a less sensitive power button arrangement on the front panel. Just relaying this in case you or your viewers encounter the same issue. Cheers. 😀

    So, “interesting” that this video involved replacing a case and the new case is the Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow. Unfortunately, do to some rather horrible events two days ago, the computer I built one of my sons back in November needed a case replacement - the tempered glass was shattered. It was the Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow. Well, yesterday I went to BestBuy as I knew they had that exact case in stock and bought a new one. THANKFULLY, all of the internal components still worked.
    I was able to transfer everything from the broken case to the replacement. While there is not much room for cable management, I really have loved building in that case. Thanks to your videos, when I transferred everything to the replacement case, I paid extra attention to cable management.
    When I originally built it, due to fan cord length, I put the upHere fan controller right in front of the motherboard. So you saw the ends of all of the fans come out from different holes into the fan controller. It was atrocious. This time, I was able to successfully hide it behind the power supply since it was too thick to stick to the back of the motherboard tray and close the lid.
    The cords behind the motherboard tray are all neatly zip tied in three groups. Now, it did take me about four hours to carefully disassemble the computer from the broken case and put it in the new one. Glass got in the PSU, in the grate of the CPU cooler, in some fans… But now it’s tidier and I am much happier.

    I've been working in computer service for 29 years and I've seen that issue very often. Usually either stuck reset or power button. It was quite common issue with cheaper cases. Also if you connect them to the mainboard always try to plug in those connectors with open tiny metal parts facing away from each other so that does not cause a short.

    Regarding the Front I/O board troubleshooting: it's not just continuity across each switch that's important, but also continuity to other power or ground planes on the board/cable. I suspect while the switches do correctly switch on and off when pressed, one of the circuits is shorted to a source of power either in the I/O board or its cable.
    ATX power supplies are always generating DC power when plugged into the wall. The always on low power (standy by) side of the PSU sends 5 volts to the 5VSB circuit in the 24 pin connector, as well as the "PS_ON" pin. When the motherboard connects that pin to ground ("pulling low"), then the high power side of the PSU activates and energizes the other power pins (+/- 12V, 3.3V, etc.) to turn the PC on. Once the connection from 5V to ground on the PS_ON pin goes away, the PSU shuts off the high power side. That interruption can happen from software so you get ATX soft power off, or it can happen from hardware with the reset switch.
    What Greg could do to further investigate is find the pins on the I/O board (and its cable) that provide USB and LED power, and check for continuity to the reset switch. The reset switch should be isolated, with no errant power from any other circuits. For that matter, it shouldn't be shorted to any other ground pins either. Then a simple workaround could be to snip the offending circuit or the reset switch, giving the user back a mostly working case for free.

    Hi Greg, i really like your videos, there is always something new to learn from your fixes, there is however a small detail i noticed, and that's the 3 remaining fans for the top and back since it was missing in the end of the video, did you eventually placed them in off camera?

    It's pretty cool how this series isn't getting a whole lot of the same issues with the majority of the systems. It lets us see a bunch of different issues that can happen. Really cool

    I ALWAYS have an exhaust fan in the back to pull warm air out of the case. Just helps with the airflow thru the system. But that was a really interesting diagnostic video.

    Greg tested the continuity of the traces on the board and everything worked out fine but I believe if he tested the continuity at the connectors it might tell him if the wires are touching something that they shouldn't be touching or one wire might be touching a neighboring wire that's always getting power causing it to short.

      Why not just order a new switch instead of swapping the whole case.

    • @22booradley
      @22booradley ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@craigdowler5051 it's hard buy just a switch. The fastest and easiest way to get a new switch board is to buy a new but same case, swap the board and cables, then return it as DEAD ON ARRIVAL

    Back in the early days of SATA cables I built a new PC and it would not post. So I did what you do and disconnect everything and slowly introduce one item at a time. For me the culprit was a new SATA cable that came with the motherboard. Replaced it and everything ran perfectly. I will admit to some very anxious moments of frustration and anger but I learnt lots from this experience.

    You should measure for continuity at the mobo connector cable end because it's more likely a pinched wire looping the connection than the switch itself or bare portion grounding it.

    I have seen a case reset switch cause a similar problem one time and one time only. That is one for the books and a very well done job of diagnosis Greg! And look at the additional bright side, you did not have to clean out the original case!

    • @jeffparks25
      @jeffparks25 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregg you could have just ordered a new front panel Io from the case manufacturer if it still in warranty or it's a just a few dollars or buy one switch in Amazon $5.00 and not have to take everything out of the case and put in the new case I had to di that I got big Corsair 1000d case only have a power reset no power and 175r have no hdd leds wires?

    I've had several instances of those mini tactile switches causing issues. The best way to test them is with the ohm setting on your meter. If they measure a meg ohm or less in the open position, that switch is bad. Using contact cleaner can sometimes get you going with out replacing the switch for a short while but most of the time the problem will return.
    You might even have to measure switch with it installed. They way front panels are made, it could be pressing on the switch just enough for the symptom to show up but not enough to actuate the switch.

    Glad you figured it out, Greg. As to your comment about it being weird for the SSD/drive to not allow the PC to post, one time I added an external Wester Digital 2TB hard drive to my PC. All worked great for a few months and one day, my PC wouldn't work. It turned out, disconnecting that external drive allowed my PC to work again. Why this happened, especially when it originally worked, I'll never know. LOL!

    If you want to fix that front IO board, try reflowing the solder of the pins on the switches, and check continuity on the wiring for the harness, too. You may have a broken switch pin, or wire in teh harness, as well. Those would be some simple things to try. Usually this kind of thing just turns out to be a cold solder joint.
