You can hear the difference in excitement in Greg’s voice after finding out it was a mining rig when he got it to post. I agree that he should have disclosed that information. This guy clearly knew what he was doing, there’s a reason there wasn’t a CPU cooler in the rig and my guess is because he didn’t have an extra on hand. Not for that “I lost the screws” excuse.

Greg is such a good wholesome dude. I could tell he was visibly irritated by the viewer's failure to disclose vital information that would have definitely helped in Greg's troubleshooting process. Greg, the original board can't run the Ryzen 5500 without a BIOS update, and running it without a compatible bios would not post and it would show DRam LED. Have you considered obtaining a Ryzen 2600 or 1600 just to have a CPU "compatible with everything am4" for testing such cases? Also, since the board was dead, if the SSD was also connected to it with SATA data when testing the Antec PSU, it might trip a PSU protection if the PSU is sensitive it has a design that could be affected. I would try that PSU on s system, at least s trash system, just to check, and it could show you if your PSU tester is even more reliable than you now think. Or it could confirm your findings.
@@kacpermalinowski8215 boards usually dropped the old APU-s, not 1st gen Ryzen, and B550 outright doesn't support 1st gen; the thing is, even some B550 do not support the 5500 cause it's newer, and not to mention the X570 boards that were released with Ryzen 2nd generation (3000). Having a Ryzen 1st gen and a 2nd gen would cover all the boards and bioses, from A320 (oldest) to B550 (newest).
What an incredible Fix or Flop episode. On the other hand it is rather strange that the user wasn't being honest about the mining part. Hopefully he or she will learn from that in the future.

That dude knows what he was doing when he sent the rig. You pretty much nail it on the head. he didn't tell you that its mining rig simple for the reason he might not get a free upgrade.
If you are running a series for fixing gaming computers, that is what it should be. Terrible for a viewer to send that computer in. Kudos to you Greg for fixing it regardless.
He probably used a wrong cable (a cable from another PSU that looks same) shorting the component. PSU might be trying to protect the damage by shutting off immediately. This exactly happens when you do that. PSU itself will be fine and that's why you dont see an issue via psu tester. This further might have damaged other components as well! I once lost my LED strip and LED on CPU cooler due to this mistake. Other have reported SSD failures due to this.
Seems like the past couple weeks, Greg, Jay etc., have been posting videos on odd behavior from viewer systems, all ending up to be a modular PSU issue. Why not pick up some carbon conductive pads for testing, so you only have to repaste when you are ready for final assembly? Thermal Grizzly's Carbonaut is a good one, they are reusable. I bet if you dropped them a line, they'd even hook you up to help out with this series, seems up their alley. The stuff really is great for testing situations!
Mining with only one GPU and a tower with almost zero airflow, it's a recipe for disaster waiting to happen. That PC would blow up eventually and it did.
I'm wondering if there was actually a short in one or more of the PSU cables, just that when you repositioned the cable(s) to use the tester, the short was no longer happening. I've had this before (in a laptop charging cable that melted itself) :D

I have a big passion for IT since small and work in IT too, and many times have I encountered the issues you deal with in these series. I wonder if the Southbridge on the motherboard went out because I've had the problem where no display but it would seem like it posted but no video and it kind if seems like that was the problem but I don't completely know
I had this same problem on a partially modular PSU too and it ended up being one of the modular cables. The cable fit the socket perfect on the PSU but, when looking at the end of the plug, the active pinout was different (meaning the plug was the same but holes had a different active wire layout), causing the power issue. I never knew that modular PSU pinouts are different from brand/model to another.
Another great video Greg. So are we looking at a potential spike in power supply while mining? Could that have then damaged something on the motherboard? Probably goes to show, use higher end power supplies if leaving computer on for long periods of time.
yeah I have the same PSU Greg replaced it with (Corsair RM850X) I've had it for probably 5yrs and I use my pc for some pretty intense video editing and upscaling. I often leave my pc on all day and all night sometimes if i'm upscaling an especially long video with my rtx 2070 Super running overclocked at 99% the whole time and my psu takes it like a champ. i am waiting for the day my gpu craps out on me though, that's gonna be a sad day, and hopefully I have some money to buy a new one lol.

I recently started watching ur fix or flop series, and to say I enjoy it is an understatement, I LOVE IT. If not cuz of schoolwork and midterm I would have binged the entire two seasons and the third by now. However, I dont really have a pc issue, but more of a monitor issue that I want to ask. One night, I heard a pop on my monitor and it shut off on me completely, no rgb light , nothing. Usually, whenever I turn on power, I see rgb light on my monitor but there was absolutely zero response. That night when my monitor shut off on me, I could still hear the video playing so I knew instantly it wasnt my pc. I tried replugging power supply and basically simply fixes and of course nothing. Both me and my dad thought its the power supply, but then its just so rare for a power supply on a monitor to be fried all of the sudden. I needed my pc for school so, I already got a new monitor, and didnt really bother testing it, but just wanna ask what u think since u know much more about tech than any of us.
The same thing was happening to a system I built recently. The sata cable I had the ssd powered with was actually from a different psu entirely so when I powered the system on it lit up for literally a split second and then shut off. It took me a while to figure out the problem. I replaced the sata cable with the correct one for the psu. the system powered on and booted fine but I was never able to get the system to recognize the ssd afterward. So got a replacement and all is well. I’m still not sure if the original ssd is cooked or not but it was strange seeing the sata cable cause the whole system to short out like that. Great videos as always Greg!
Love the show dude, it's helped we go through the steps and trouble shoot friends and families problems. Just so ya know though I mine...and if you're using hive os you're not just a casual miner. That takes a lot more time to set up then just a one card rig on your personal pc
Freaking epic battle here Greg! I'm a medic and nothing frustrates me more than folk concealing details when you're trying to sort them out. Couldn't care less whether you take drugs or not, but it makes you easier to diagnose and treat if you're up front with it! Thanks for for the kick-ass content as always.

Always look forward to another installment in Fix or Flop. And sometimes like you, I'm surprised. Like this one? I suspected the modular SATA cable was from a different supply and maybe the pinouts were wrong (for why it wouldn't power on but seemed to be okay without the SATA cable connected to the device). But when the motherboard wouldn't post (and obviously as it turned out the SATA device was OK) I went "nope!" lol - always the same and always different (that's what makes it fresh). Keep up the good work!
Had the exact same problem with my Seasonic PSU a while back. Worked fine, then system just went off & refused to power on again, every time I tried to boot it, I heard a click from the power supply and it shut itself down immediately. Ended up returning the unit back to the store & getting a new one via warranty.
Always a new scenario in these Fix or Flop videos appreciate ur work always nd how hard u try now to get frustrated with rigs...anyways, could there be a needed BIOS update with that B550 board u tried nd not wrked nd continously showed DRAM debug LED as we have seen in past that necessary BIOS update do show these kind of debug LEDs...just curious
That's what gets me about this series. Should always get the bios up to date too the latest non-beta. That would be one problem area that could be taken off the possible issue list.
Just wondering if your psu tester actually "loads" the power rails when it measures the voltages? This might explain why the psu appeared to fail with the ssd connected. It could be the protections circuits in the psu were not working properly and when any current is drawn the faulty circuitry shuts down the psu. I would have connected a different external drive to eliminate a problem with the ssd.

The explanation as to why the power supply wasn't working was simple I was literally screaming lol. The power supply was fine until it was put under a small load which was the issue.
i have a feeling this person took you. He mined on it fried the PSU and it took some parts with it and he submitted it knowing he would get new parts. I more then likely knew that mining fried his rig and knew what was wrong.
My pc is only turning on when i touch skrew driver into motherboard but after when i press power it turns off means power button is okay please help me 😢😢
I’ve been binge watching all these videos! It’s such a good series. I’m about to upgrade my ram and I have so much anxiety lol. The first set I got wasn’t on the dvl list so I couldn’t get the system to post. Now I made sure I got 2 sticks that were on the list. Running Asus PRIME b560 / i5 10400f / Rtx 3060 / and upgrading from 16 to 64 gb ddr4 ram. Chrome will have plenty of ram now lol. Love the videos! Can’t wait for the next one. Might upgrade the cpu if I work up the courage.
First thing that came to mind when it would not boot was did the person mount the board right. You showed it was mounted correctly. I did have a customer mount the board to the case without using the mounting post and it did the same as this one was doing. Also in all my years I never had a power switch be bad until last week. New case bad power switch took me over and hour to locate the problem.
Greg you should try seeing if that Antec PSU will boot another system, I think the fact it was connected by the SATA cable to the broken motherboard and was plugged into the SSD while trying to test was screwing up the tester.
So I'm wondering if during the mining session, that there was a overvoltage from the SSD to the PSU and anytime that the SSD would try to do anything it would pull more voltage causing the PSU to trip. Potentially that's why it was fine sending power through to the tester? Just a theory.
Is there any chance that the Antec PS could work on the rig with the newer Mobo? Just a thought I had as it seems to me the Mobo being bad could have put an excess load on the PS and cause the problem with it? Just asking.
That tester, does it check all the grounds? I would break out the multi-meter and check the pins indvidually. It could also have been a little short in that SATA power plug that fell out as you worked on the system.
Hey Greg it would be interesting to see what Asus says on the Motherboard. Also depending on when the board was purchased wouldn't you need a BIOS update to support Ryzen 5000?
I recentky had to RMA two MB's. The 3rd was an MSI Meg and it worked just fine. Is quality control just not what it used to be? It seems that a lot of MB's and CPUs are bricks of late.
Hmm... I think I have a good idea what happens. I have issue with SSD lockup, which I believe it's the case. There's nothing wrong with all the system, and the SSD is not faulty at all. The reason behind this is when the SSD controller reads the journal and somehow comes up with an error. The controller then hanged because it didn't know what to do and kept sending a busy signal to your motherboard, which make it couldn't post. I don't know if this case is similar to yours but that's my experience. I just power off the system, do a deep cleaning (removing every component, dusting and whatever) then reassemble the PC and the PC boots up. Of course, I sent back the system to its owner but the owner return back to me cited the same problem after a few weeks, and he did mention that his system sometimes doesn't want to post at all. I'll change the SSD if I were you, because that's a tell-tale sign that the controller of the SSD might have degraded and became unstable.
The problem is probably the SATA cable itself. It might have been a found cable that was from another power supply, with a different wiring to the pins. Seen that damage components too, which may have caused the failure or other components

2600 or 1600af (as it's zen+) is a good idea, but some boards can't support both 1st and 5th gen ryzen in 1 bios revision though.

The PSU tester was reading the correct voltage from the SATA cable, which is why I didn't immediately conclude that it was the wrong cable.

Why not pick up some carbon conductive pads for testing, so you only have to repaste when you are ready for final assembly? Thermal Grizzly's Carbonaut is a good one, they are reusable. I bet if you dropped them a line, they'd even hook you up to help out with this series, seems up their alley. The stuff really is great for testing situations!

Mining with only one GPU and a tower with almost zero airflow, it's a recipe for disaster waiting to happen. That PC would blow up eventually and it did.
I'm wondering if there was actually a short in one or more of the PSU cables, just that when you repositioned the cable(s) to use the tester, the short was no longer happening.
I've had this before (in a laptop charging cable that melted itself) :D

I wonder if the Southbridge on the motherboard went out because I've had the problem where no display but it would seem like it posted but no video and it kind if seems like that was the problem but I don't completely know
I had this same problem on a partially modular PSU too and it ended up being one of the modular cables. The cable fit the socket perfect on the PSU but, when looking at the end of the plug, the active pinout was different (meaning the plug was the same but holes had a different active wire layout), causing the power issue. I never knew that modular PSU pinouts are different from brand/model to another.

Probably goes to show, use higher end power supplies if leaving computer on for long periods of time.
yeah I have the same PSU Greg replaced it with (Corsair RM850X) I've had it for probably 5yrs and I use my pc for some pretty intense video editing and upscaling. I often leave my pc on all day and all night sometimes if i'm upscaling an especially long video with my rtx 2070 Super running overclocked at 99% the whole time and my psu takes it like a champ. i am waiting for the day my gpu craps out on me though, that's gonna be a sad day, and hopefully I have some money to buy a new one lol.
@@NonLegitNation2 I put. Corsair 750 in my nephews first build. Told him the last thing he is gonna need to worry about is the PSU. 😃

I recently started watching ur fix or flop series, and to say I enjoy it is an understatement, I LOVE IT. If not cuz of schoolwork and midterm I would have binged the entire two seasons and the third by now. However, I dont really have a pc issue, but more of a monitor issue that I want to ask. One night, I heard a pop on my monitor and it shut off on me completely, no rgb light , nothing. Usually, whenever I turn on power, I see rgb light on my monitor but there was absolutely zero response. That night when my monitor shut off on me, I could still hear the video playing so I knew instantly it wasnt my pc. I tried replugging power supply and basically simply fixes and of course nothing. Both me and my dad thought its the power supply, but then its just so rare for a power supply on a monitor to be fried all of the sudden. I needed my pc for school so, I already got a new monitor, and didnt really bother testing it, but just wanna ask what u think since u know much more about tech than any of us.
Michigan here. Enjoyed seeing a fix or flop with multiple issues... reminded me of my first few builds from many years ago.
The same thing was happening to a system I built recently. The sata cable I had the ssd powered with was actually from a different psu entirely so when I powered the system on it lit up for literally a split second and then shut off. It took me a while to figure out the problem. I replaced the sata cable with the correct one for the psu. the system powered on and booted fine but I was never able to get the system to recognize the ssd afterward. So got a replacement and all is well. I’m still not sure if the original ssd is cooked or not but it was strange seeing the sata cable cause the whole system to short out like that. Love the show dude, it's helped we go through the steps and trouble shoot friends and families problems. Just so ya know though I mine...and if you're using hive os you're not just a casual miner. That takes a lot more time to set up then just a one card rig on your personal pc
Nice video, i had the same problem in the past, passmark actually did a great job the problem manifests only when the power supply is under load.
Freaking epic battle here Greg! I'm a medic and nothing frustrates me more than folk concealing details when you're trying to sort them out. Couldn't care less whether you take drugs or not, but it makes you easier to diagnose and treat if you're up front with it! Thanks for for the kick-ass content as always.
I use your trouble shooting checklist (that I've sort of deduced from watching tons of your videos) on my own computers. Awesome video idea would be an official rundown of the things you check when trying to figure out what's causing issues in a PC. Keep making great videos and thank you for all the help.
I've heard that some unscrupulous miners have created a worm that forces others' machines to mine for them. Perhaps that's what happened here?

Always look forward to another installment in Fix or Flop. And sometimes like you, I'm surprised. Like this one? I suspected the modular SATA cable was from a different supply and maybe the pinouts were wrong (for why it wouldn't power on but seemed to be okay without the SATA cable connected to the device). But when the motherboard wouldn't post (and obviously as it turned out the SATA device was OK) I went "nope!" lol - always the same and always different (that's what makes it fresh). Keep up the good work!

Had the exact same problem with my Seasonic PSU a while back. Worked fine, then system just went off & refused to power on again, every time I tried to boot it, I heard a click from the power supply and it shut itself down immediately. Ended up returning the unit back to the store & getting a new one via warranty.

Always a new scenario in these Fix or Flop videos appreciate ur work always nd how hard u try now to get frustrated with rigs...anyways, could there be a needed BIOS update with that B550 board u tried nd not wrked nd continously showed DRAM debug LED as we have seen in past that necessary BIOS update do show these kind of debug LEDs...just curious
That's what gets me about this series. Should always get the bios up to date too the latest non-beta. That would be one problem area that could be taken off the possible issue list.

Just wondering if your psu tester actually "loads" the power rails when it measures the voltages? This might explain why the psu appeared to fail with the ssd connected. It could be the protections circuits in the psu were not working properly and when any current is drawn the faulty circuitry shuts down the psu. I would have connected a different external drive to eliminate a problem with the ssd.

The explanation as to why the power supply wasn't working was simple I was literally screaming lol. The power supply was fine until it was put under a small load which was the issue.
i have a feeling this person took you. He mined on it fried the PSU and it took some parts with it and he submitted it knowing he would get new parts. I more then likely knew that mining fried his rig and knew what was wrong.

My pc is only turning on when i touch skrew driver into motherboard but after when i press power it turns off means power button is okay please help me 😢😢
I’ve been binge watching all these videos! It’s such a good series. I’m about to upgrade my ram and I have so much anxiety lol. The first set I got wasn’t on the dvl list so I couldn’t get the system to post. Now I made sure I got 2 sticks that were on the list. Running Asus PRIME b560 / i5 10400f / Rtx 3060 / and upgrading from 16 to 64 gb ddr4 ram. Chrome will have plenty of ram now lol. Love the videos! Can’t wait for the next one. Might upgrade the cpu if I work up the courage.
First thing that came to mind when it would not boot was did the person mount the board right. You showed it was mounted correctly. I did have a customer mount the board to the case without using the mounting post and it did the same as this one was doing. Also in all my years I never had a power switch be bad until last week. New case bad power switch took me over and hour to locate the problem.
Love the work you doing, great troubleshooting. As you said little bit of honesty would save you a bit of time.

Greg you should try seeing if that Antec PSU will boot another system, I think the fact it was connected by the SATA cable to the broken motherboard and was plugged into the SSD while trying to test was screwing up the tester.
So I'm wondering if during the mining session, that there was a overvoltage from the SSD to the PSU and anytime that the SSD would try to do anything it would pull more voltage causing the PSU to trip. Potentially that's why it was fine sending power through to the tester? Just a theory.
Is there any chance that the Antec PS could work on the rig with the newer Mobo? Just a thought I had as it seems to me the Mobo being bad could have put an excess load on the PS and cause the problem with it? Just asking.
That tester, does it check all the grounds?
I would break out the multi-meter and check the pins indvidually.
It could also have been a little short in that SATA power plug that fell out as you worked on the system.

Totally a great PSU replacement. My friend bought the same unit recently and I told him that it's gonna last for years to come.
I recentky had to RMA two MB's. The 3rd was an MSI Meg and it worked just fine. Is quality control just not what it used to be? It seems that a lot of MB's and CPUs are bricks of late.

Hmm... I think I have a good idea what happens. I have issue with SSD lockup, which I believe it's the case. There's nothing wrong with all the system, and the SSD is not faulty at all. The reason behind this is when the SSD controller reads the journal and somehow comes up with an error. The controller then hanged because it didn't know what to do and kept sending a busy signal to your motherboard, which make it couldn't post. I don't know if this case is similar to yours but that's my experience. I just power off the system, do a deep cleaning (removing every component, dusting and whatever) then reassemble the PC and the PC boots up. Of course, I sent back the system to its owner but the owner return back to me cited the same problem after a few weeks, and he did mention that his system sometimes doesn't want to post at all. I'll change the SSD if I were you, because that's a tell-tale sign that the controller of the SSD might have degraded and became unstable.
The problem is probably the SATA cable itself. It might have been a found cable that was from another power supply, with a different wiring to the pins. Seen that damage components too, which may have caused the failure or other components

One thing to think of or consider is the sata cable OEM to the PSU? Is it from a different PSU brand? Cross matching cables can be fatal to systems.
