The rhapsodic, almost improvisational nature of this most excellent concerto suit Ms Argerich just fine. This, along with her extraordinary performance (also on TH-cam) of the Shostakovich No 1 concerto for piano (and trumpet) are as entertaining to watch as they are to listen. Though not technically quite as pristine as she can be, she captures the youthful exhuberance of this piece. The "2nd movement"..of sorts...is, IMO one of the composers loveliest, and most evocative scores. The harmonies border on jazz before the 10 minute mark, and that almost "spooky" section at 10:30 has been imitated by several film composers, as much of this entire concerto has. It might be odd to say, but I enjoy this concerto every bit as much as the No 3. In some ways, it is No 3's companion, as is Shostakovitch's kindler and gentler No 2 piano concerto (written for his infant son Maxim) is to the composer's first Piano concerto. This is also a VERY fine video, with audio that, through my recording studio Monitors is demonstration worthy in it's balance and musicality.

I have said for years that Martha Argerich is the greatest concerto pianist of the last 60 years, and this video just backs that up. I'm blown away by the fact that at times she was playing while not even looking at the keyboard.
Sergei Prokofiev set about composing his Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat major, Op. 10 in 1911 and finished it in 1912. A one-movement concerto, it is the shortest of his five complete piano concertos, lasting only around a quarter of an hour. Allegro brioso (7-8 min) Andante assai (4-5 min) Allegro scherzando (4-5 min) WIKIPEDIA
What a fascinating and unsettling piece of music. It sounds like what an alien who really wanted to sound like Tchaikovsky would compose. Even at this young age and musically inspired by a known master, Prokofiev just couldn't hide the fact that he was a true and original creative genius.
Non il n'y a aucun mystère justement, vous avez raison, c'est toujours pareil, c'est brillant, confondant de virtuosité, mais ça reste à la surface, c'est creux. En bref c'est de l'esbroufe.
Did the applause start to die before Mme. Argerich even left the stage the second time?? Impossible. Not after this electrifying performance. How could an audience be so ignorant. Must have been a fade-out.
What an incredible performance...how much I could here her live/ alas I live far out west in Utah, but I did personally me Jean Yves Thibaudet (sp) introduced by Keith Lockhart our conductor of Utah Symphony. I here that Prokofief and Coco Channel were an item??? Possibly??
I listen to this repeatedly because of the remarkable microphonics which crisply capture elements of wit in both her performance and those of the distinct members of the orchestra that I've not heard in other very good recordings of this piece. Refrained motifs resonate from specific instruments with a clarity as startling as M A's gossamer, richly discordant undulations and sparks.
@mmoynan I know, I love this version, the sound is great, despite the light buzz in the background. You have not only made my day but also my whole month with Prokofiev
Fantastic. Argerich makes it all look so easy even as her hands - to borrow a phrase from Steven Leacock - "gallop off in all directions". Phenomenal technique, but never JUST technique, always musical, spontaneous, passionate. Who is playing now to even compare? I have grown to love the effervescent, youthful exuberance of this piece - which I find every bit as approachable as the 3rd. Check out that cascade of Russian bells that the piano starts at around 14:40, continuing right through the coda / final statement of the opening theme! I can't imagine how anyone could not enjoy this concerto's lyricism, frantic energy and playful antics - but this audience! It feels like everyone is sitting with their arms folded, saying, "what the hell is this?" Maybe someone forgot to tell them that it's OK to enjoy a concert and not be so solemn... I mean, Prokofiev, never exactly shy and retiring, basically wrote this piece to give the middle finger to his teachers at the Conservatory - it's kind of like a musical "go f--k yourselves"!
@@rozayoder3178 I'm a real fan of Trifonov as a multi-dimensional player, but even with his great tech accomplishments (and a huge industry marketing machine behind him also to be honest) - for me I don't believe he's quite in the same class yet. That's how unique Martha is.
Ms. Argerich is a genius at the keyboard. She plays with great feeling and emotion. She has her critics, but believe me as a striving pianist in my youth, it takes a great deal of physical work to perform and make beautiful music. I rate her above Artur Rubenstein, who I heard live in the Hollywood Bowl in my youth, then at Redlands University where I was a piano major. If only it had been Argerich. Cheath
Of all music written bearing the modern sound is there anything that compares to the piano concertos of Prokofiev ? What could be better than that played by the greatest pianist ever recorded ?
Not True!! More colorful beautiful piano sound than Argerich=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Artur Rubinstein Radu Lupu Vladimir Ashkenazy! More powerful louder than Argerich=Mikhail Pletnev! The second loudest was Lazar Berman! More genius than Argerich=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini Alexei Lubimov Stanislav Igolinski! Argerich not the best genius! Argerich not had the best piano sound! Argerich not the most Powerful! Argerich can not be the greatest!!
This is nothing, if you haven't heard Prokofiev's 2nd concerto, it is even more fiendishly difficult. Argerich herself won't touch it, I've heard. Prokofiev was a genius, he wrote this while still a student at the Conservatoire and he won the piano competition playing this - his own concerto. It was a case of "mud in your eye!" to most of the teachers who couldn't understand his modernist compositions.
@@slowpainful Check out Yuja Wang's performance of the Prokofiev 2nd. It will put you up into another world! Especially her playing of the 1st movement cadenza.
Spectacular performance by an absolute amazing piamist, fantastic composition by a very young Prokofiev. A must see.

Martha is phenomenal!!
Martha is one of the wonders of this world.
The second movement is so beautiful.
Extraordinary pianism from the great Argerich. This work is tailor made for her.
*Impériale* -- comme toujours !
Did the applause start to die before Mme. Argerich even left the stage the second time?? Impossible. Not after this electrifying performance. How could an audience be so ignorant. Must have been a fade-out.
What incredibly beautiful hands...that yield both power and tenderness. Terrific performance by all. Maybe my 10th visit.
Absolutely fabulous performance
What an incredible performance...how much I could here her live/ alas I live far out west in Utah, but I did personally me Jean Yves Thibaudet (sp) introduced by Keith Lockhart our conductor of Utah Symphony. I here that Prokofief and Coco Channel were an item??? Possibly??
Époustouflant ! Interprétation de Martha absolument renversante.Œuvre de "jeunesse" ! Quelle fantastique expérience.
That's good to hear. I suppose it's all about mic choice and placement---but I wonder if that remarkably focused shell had something to do with it ?
@mmoynan I know, I love this version, the sound is great, despite the light buzz in the background. You have not only made my day but also my whole month with Prokofiev
I like the cicada background, as well!
Extraordinaria¡¡ MARAVILLOSA¡¡Te deseo FELICIDADES A MONTONES¡¡
Cuanto placer, cuanto deleite cuanto gozo que nos brindas¡¡ GRACIAS¡¡
The opening minute of this concerto was used as the theme to NBC's ill-fated early 1980s newsmagazine program "Monitor".
La maravillosa Martha Argerich, una de las más importantes artistas existentes.
Bravo !!!
:-)
Daniil Trifonov
@@rozayoder3178 I'm a real fan of Trifonov as a multi-dimensional player, but even with his great tech accomplishments (and a huge industry marketing machine behind him also to be honest) - for me I don't believe he's quite in the same class yet. That's how unique Martha is.
Wow! Just wow. From the return of the magnificent opening theme to the tumultuous ending has my hairs standing on end.
OMG. This and Prokofiev's Piano #3 send me as close to heaven as you can get while still on earth! ♥️
Amazing performance ❤
Cheath
This left me in tears of joy
Of all music written bearing the modern sound is there anything that compares to the piano concertos of Prokofiev ?
What could be better than that played by the greatest pianist ever recorded ?
Agree on both accounts!
She born to play something like Tchaikovsky,Prokofiev.,Rachmaninov. Once in a life wanna hear her live performance.
Это гениально...... Хочется плакать от счастья....
i feel this music is composed by a mad genius. the level of dexterity demanded by this piece is unreal.
00:29 Allegro Brioso
07:18 Andante Assai
11:34 Allegro Scherzando
She always had a spectacular finger staccato technique.
Amazing! Thank you for posting this!
She is amazing. Prokofiev, brilliant.
Génie et bonheur communicatif... A la mn 12.01, le violoncelliste est tellement heureux ! Nous aussi ! Merci Martha pour ce moment de bonheur !
