Every time I think, "Yikes, the young man never be able to sustain that tempo," he DOES. It doesn't hurt that he and the conductor seem to have quite an enviable rapport. Nor does it hurt that the orchestra is in its top form, every detail neat and communicative. Ah, the good old days when orchestras could actually play to full houses, go on tours, etc.

I have never studied music or learned to play a musical instrument, but I have discovered that listening and watching Alexander play the piano with or without orchestration has filled a hole in my heart. When I watch his hands move across the keyboard and the expression on his face as well as his body move with the music I imagine that he is expressing something from his soul. It may be my need to believe in the supernatural, but I believe that this young man is a gift from the higher power, to be enjoyed and rejoiced. It is my prayer that he is able to continue this as his “love and profession” and that he continues to find his joy in this endeavor as he continues to bring joy to those of us who take the time to listen.

Alexander is a gift of diligence, love of music, hours of practice and an attempt to express himself in the music of the Russian Masters. He is gifted young fellow. Blame his parents, not the supernatural. There are others like him, the rare, the exceptions. Few show such humility and often child-like ebullience.

I love Prokofiev with all my heart. Have since I was 4 years old. I have never before heard this concerto given forth with such clarity, genuine emotion and a connection and intent so thorough and soul deep among all the musicians on that stage. Alexander Malofeev's greatest gift is to bring out the best, not only with his own performance, but of those performing with him. What a gift he is to everyone who plays when he plays with them! Brilliant art created by pianist, conductor and orchestra.

This was his performance at the China Competition of 2019. Correct? I'm still confused why he placed second. His was certainly the best for the entire competition. Well, I acquired an even greater admiration and respect for Alexander Malofeev because of the manner with which he walked away from that with his head up high and continued on with his studies and performances everywhere. He's a true hero in my book...a TRUE hero!

An utterly astounding performance! Alexander has excelled himself. The rhythmic passages have an intoxicating intensity and evoke the feeling of a maniacal dervish-like dance. Even the slower passages sometimes have a certain sinister seance-like feeling making one hold one's breath and ask 'What's round the corner?' But there is also mischievous humour and fun and Alexander misses not a single nuance. He has the unequalled pianistic skills to achieve the startlingly sudden changes in mood from mysterious mutterings to sweeping melodic lines - and his finger-work is impossibly accurate and controlled. I too will go out on a limb and affirm that this is a performance without equal - partly due, and in no small measure, to the superb orchestral contribution.

I cannot help thinking that this must have been like seeing a young Mozart perform. And aside from that to have the appearance to make Adonis envious is beyond amazing. Already his repertoire leaves one slack-jawed and awed. His renditions of pieces like Prokofiev concerti from memory are beyond belief. Not a single false note reminds me of Benedetti Michelangeli. Guess I'm insufficiently cultured, but I still dislike Prokofiev's compositions--have ever since i heard his score for the ballet, Romeo and Juliet--. Absolutely dreadful-- to my ear at least. Mygawd, Tshaikovsky is the master of music for the ballet--tops in my opinion. To me, Prokofiev's music sounds discordant in many places throughout his compositions. However, I must admit to having no music training whatever, so perhaps I just don't know how to listen to his to his music. But dear Alexander--nay no pianist however great has as yet caused me to enjoy Prokofiev's music.

The interpretation of Malofeev is unobjectable from a strictly technical perspective, it also has a certain rythmic swing and a truly Russian understanding of the global structure of the piece. Malofeev reminds me of the young Kissin. However, Kissin never really reached that top level mentioned here (exemplified by, among others, Sofronitsky, Gilels and especially Richter). Kissin, and I suspect Malofeev too, is an outstanding talent but emotionally 'blocked' and that is reflected in the way he plays. Perhaps human suffering will melt the ice, who knows. That did not happen with Kissin yet. I see ice also in this young guy, a lot of beautifully sparkling ice.

He plays fantastically emotionally fine, detailled and correct -
mind-blowingly wonderful - so - what should he do differently here?
He is blocked? To say that when it is an symphonious work - the conductor and the Orchestra rely on him - he has to be conform, and nevertheless he answers to his own feelings and reflections continually - so the whole performance is sparkling (it is difficult to find a sparkling object that is not cold - diamond, ice ) - just wonderfully bright!
