even today in 2018, with so many female pianists taking up top notch echelon, seeing her powerful forearm executing those octaves at jawdropping speed still holds one in awe. She just ruthlessly chops down those keyboards as if she has no nerve for pain, no limitation for speed or energy.
Martha Argerich transmits the vital energy and lyricism of Liszt's first concerto in a unique way. I had the great pleasure of listening one of her live performances of this great work when she visited Caracas for the first time. Thank you again, Martha!
Outstanding interpretation !!! Martha Argerich at the technical zenith, with one of her signature concerts. She beats her own ´68 recording with Abbado at lenghts. And our conductor is the grandchild of hungarian composer and pianist von Dohnanyi who composed in the tradition of Liszt.
this was my first time hearing the liszt piano concerto - through this perf on youtube. my jaw dropped at the end. insanely brilliant this woman!!! bravo!
Although i prefer Ms.Argerich in her "later" Phase - AGAIN She Confounds me! This is Astounding. She ranges over that Keyboard like A Tigress, with Liszt madly snapping at Her heels. Fast?? Fast??? FASTER!!!! Don't you GET it??? Can't you Hear what is happening here? She plays Exactly the correct tempo, disappears into the Piano, so what remains is Liszt! If you are listening for Speed, maybe it's YOU who's in a hurry. Certainly not Ms. Argerich, and Her smile at the end says She enjoyed it. Such a shame some of you didn't! YES! I Fully Admit it. I'm TOTALLY Besotted!!!
I am absolutely certain that Liszt himself would have admired this performance of Martha as well as the conductor, birds and celestial whispers are coming out of the keys and the flutes and the other instruments. It is true that speed has overwhelmed everything at the end, but it is intended to conclude with a climax. Dear mmoynan, thank you so much for posting this! The all too lucky people that attended this performance are very-very few compared to all the rest of us who did not!
One of my all-time favorite pieces of music. Such unbridled passion and ingenuity, fire and technique fused with such creativity...Martha, thank you for being you as well.
This performance of Liszt's Eb is Argerich's best. It may be the best performance of this concerto altogether, and the orchestra is as responsive as possible. Argerich's reaction at the end of the performance shows that she was quite happy happy with the whole thing.
PARADIGMATICA INTERPRETACION....gracias Martha!!!!!
I have had her 1968 recording with the LSO of this glorious concerto for years, to see her play it with the same style and panache on video is such a treat. My favourite pianist playing my favourite composer. Doesn't get any better.
Martha deals with Lizst like she deals with Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff; i.e. she conquers them and makes them better than they were before she sat down. They're all smilng in heaven. She doesn't just play the notes. And with all of them, she seems to bring out the best in the orchestras.
Wonderful work and amazing, brilliant performance (I did not expect anything else). Have you noticed the smile of satisfaction on Martha's face at the end of her part, just before the last orchestral chords? No wonder: when you are able to play this concerto (and to play it like that), you cannot but smile like that… The only higher happiness is to be able to compose it. Liszt enjoyed both. Thank you for sharing this beauty with all of us.
what makes you think Liszt would have played this as fast she did? The Liszt piano concert no1 is short enough, i think there is no reason to play it too fast. :)
Amazing Performance from Argerich. At the End of the Concerto her smile is so beautiful ! Its nice to see what Music can do for the Artist and of course the Audience. I would like to hear the Applause after the End of this Concert :)
Meravigliosa Martha Argerich.
this is all wonderful , thanks to you tube to give us ,classical music lovers the oportunity to enjoy these treasures . i wish they would the whole work instead of just part of it .
So dynamic, elegant and expressive a performance, with beautiful articulation of cadence, cadenza and melody: she takes the music away with her, a fury of passion, precision and power few can compete with, the complexity a challenge she relishes, and perhaps, one could say, is in love with, and rightly so, not least because she's up to it.
An inspired interpretation with so authentic a feel ( great conductor and orchestra in concert) : Martha extinguishes temptation to indulge in sentimentality , a hard drive in some senses, which in no way lessens sensitivity and lyrical beauty, rather the reverse, testament to her loyalty to Liszt.
i think the same can be said about most great pianists, and Martha is one of the them for sure. everyone has something different to offer. don't forget this is not a solo performance and Dohnanyi had his contributions as to how this performance was shaped.
I'm playing it now, I loved this my god!!!!!! Love Martha. This Liszt is amazing!!! Music like that should widely spread out through world instead of the chichi rock
Maria ...
I've read a bunch of comments about Argerich playing the E flat differently each time she plays it and that therefore she doesn't have a concrete vision of the piece. This kind of comment is about the most idiotic collection of words I can think of with reference to this piece particularly and great music generally. GOD IN HEAVEN HELP US if music EVER stayed the same!!!! Liszt NEVER played anything written by anyone the same way twice!!! Good god!!! - music of all the arts is of the moment. It
I believe her smile is due to the fact that she left the pedal floored down after the massive final chord (MA's usually does this in this piano concerto but Liszt did not write it like that) and she might have had a discussion with the director about it during the rehearsals (he probably disagreed to do it and she did it anyway). This just my own theory, but it's likely to be true!
0:10 its so astonishing, and the whole concert is so beautiful and on the other hand full of technical extasy, typical Liszt mmm) Argerich has the best interpretation)
I've heard of "Drop the mic" - but "Drop the piano?!" Damn... bravissima! But what's next? The Minute Waltz in 10 seconds? Or "The Flight of the Bumblebee" in 20.6 seconds?! Still, stellar interpretation and performance. Somewhere even Franz is going, "damn, girl!"

Argerich does things that seems technically impossible and makes them beautiful and effortless. She is a gift to the world.

Wow! The piano's on fire! Absolutely jaw-dropping! I haven't seen anybody who plays this concerto like this. What an amazing feat!
The absolutely mental octave in the first few seconds always sends chills of epicness down my spine. A staggering performance once more.
God bless you, Lady argerich. I never heard such a woderfull performance of this Listz concerto.
Listen to Cziffra.
I don't say it's better or worse, but is worth listening :)
Amazing virtuosity. Liszt would be proud of her!
Google
Magnificent! Astonishing! One of my favorite pieces of Mr. Liszt
An angel with just the right amount of the devil in her to play the daylights out of Liszt. Nothing could be more perfect. Go Martha go!
This is a total wow! What joy to have it on You Tube.

she is as brilliant and passionate as Liszt himself!!!
One of the most AMAZING renditions of this concerto! Martha Argerich in my favourite period of hers: early 80s.

BRUCE MCINTOSH wonderful review. Love it. Thanks

Brilliantly said; thank you!
great remarkable performance by Argerich --nothing more to say
The wonderful thing about Argerich is her ability to reinvent a piece every time she plays it. No performance of the same piece sounds the same.
The best performance of this piece that i've ever heard.
The octaves at 11:05 - 11:19 deserves much more attention than the introduction in my opinion. Absolutely jaw-dropping and demonic.
yeah, thanks for pointing that out.....I remembering thinking that when I saw that part, but it's kind of buried in the middle.
That’s just awesome. Just superhuman
What about at 16:34?
I am absolutely certain that Liszt himself would have admired this performance of Martha as well as the conductor, birds and celestial whispers are coming out of the keys and the flutes and the other instruments. Marvelous performance ! Martha Argerich !
Great Performance !!!!! Congratulations .
Great! This is one of my favorite music.
7:34 It's like watching Tchaikovsk playing the violin.
What do you mean?

I've never heard the opening being taken at such a tempo. Bravissimo!!!
I heard her around late 1970s in Liszt No 1 and I cannot describe the visceral thrill of her playing .....
Absolutely incredible!
Performance fenomenal. É para ser ouvido várias vezes
wooow ! she´s absolutely on fire !!!! wooooowwww
Very beautiful and brilliant (Y)

quite true !!!
Only thing I don't like about her playing and maybe her interpretation, is that she speed up some parts of the piece, mainly in concertos 😕
Wonderful work and amazing, brilliant performance (I did not expect anything else). What a great performance! Wish I was there.
That last chord of Argerich sounds almost more powerful than the entire orchestra!
she was completely possessed!!! freaking amazing!
Martha is LITERALLY the modern embodiment of Liszt. That opening piano flourish is probably at the speed that Liszt would have played it.
what makes you think Liszt would have played this as fast she did? The Liszt piano concert no1 is short enough, i think there is no reason to play it too fast. :)
awesome ! wonderful ! marvelous ! fantastic !

Argerich is from another planet. plain and simple.
Thank you the joy of this worth gift in a special day for me.
Argerich's unmistakable smile at the end of the performance (17:05 until the end) says it all.
We were all smiling too, Martha! :-)
virtuosa extraordinaria Martha , admiro su tecnica su claridad y perfeccion .

it'snot a world powerful enough to praise Martha and her talent to me she is the greatest pianist of the 20th century
more intense than any heavy metal concert
this is all wonderful , thanks to you tube to give us ,classical music lovers the oportunity to enjoy these treasures . i wish they would the whole work instead of just part of it .

Fabulous as always!!!
Perfect!
History will show that Martha Argerich is the best female pianist of all time bar none.
Bravissimo

Am I such a Martha Argerich fan? Everything she does is so amazing and felt so natural.
