      Sportomatic was available from 1967-1980. It was an automatic clutch and manual shifter. Best of both worlds.

    • @MagicAyrtonforever
      @MagicAyrtonforever 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Joey Baby Emissions is the only reason for water cooling.. and led to quite a bit more weight.. !!! So actually water cooling is a step backward from a performance point. Singer Porsches are making over 350bhp with air cooling, and to me they sound better.

    Even with double-clutch gearboxes, an automatic in a 911 is just wrong. I never drove a 964 but I did get to drive the tiptronic in both a 996 and a 997.1 and it pretty much ruins the character of the car, IMO. The 997.2's PDK was a lot better, but I would still pick a manual every day of the week and twice on sundays. The 911's tiptronic felt like a (slightly faster) traditional box - because it is one. In my humble view, unless you're disabled, you should never get a 911 with an auto. Or, perhaps, if this is the sort of transmission you absolutely want or need, perhaps you shouldn't be driving a 911.
    Don't get me wrong: Automatics are fine in certain types of cars, but in a sports-car? We're pretty far removed from the task of driving these days as it is, thanks to things like electric power-steering, noise insulation, etc ... Which is fine in an S-class, but I wouldn't want to "give away" the level of control and involvement a manual offers in anything with sporting ambitions. Heck, I never even considered VW's DSG when I ordered both my Mk V and Mk VI Golf GTIs - and back then, those new boxes were all the rage.

  • @billschlafly4107
    @billschlafly4107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    30 years later you could buy a Porsche 718 base model for about the same price, $60k. While it doesn't have the iconic badge of the 911, the 718 2.0 liter turbo outperforms it's ancestor by a wide margin.

    • @Ferraridude13
      @Ferraridude13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol and you don't even consider inflation? $60k in 1990 is $130k in todays money. Actually today's 911 with inflation accounted for is considerably cheaper

    Beautiful car this Carrera 2. However, the automatic transmission seems like more of luxury car option than sports car option. The 911 used to be sports car. But then it has leather interior option and optional floor mats, so maybe it's a luxury car, too. I don't know.

      Well let me say this: A 911 to me must have a stick, even the new ones. That having been said I now have my first slushbox ever, in 27 cars, mostly BMWs and VW and SAABS. And frankly, I love it. That's because Seattle traffic is just so much bullshit so I have a 9-3 Convertible SAAB with a Stage One hop up and it's a lot of fun in sport mode, it gets things done. And leaves my right hand to roam all over my GF LOL I know distracted driving tho.

    Thank goodness I don't make any of the laws in this country because if I did, earning a driver's license would be impossible without demonstrating proof that the driver seeking to earn a license can properly drive as stick and work a clutch smoothly. It pains me to see just how slack and scared the majority of people are in the US. It's no wonder why some of the coolest cars were never historically offered in this country. Sigh... Pathetic.
