When driving behind a Testarossa you notice how wide and seemingly flat the car looks. When my brother, a friend and I were on a trip to Palm Springs California we came up next to a burgundy metallic Testarossa which was one of most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen.
This is the configuration that sparks the terminology war between 180º-V and Boxer and Flat. It's definitely not a Boxer because opposing sets of pistons have to move in opposite directions on independent crank journals to be a Boxer, as its predecessor, the 512 Berlinetta Boxer was misnamed. This engine has opposing con rods on the same journal on the crank, hence the 180º V name. But people don't like calling a wide open V a V. I don't mind calling a 180º V a Flat engine though.
Having driven one for over 1,000 miles, I can honestly say it was, and IS one of the most comfortable cars to drive long-distance. I drove one from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, and loved every mile. Comparing this car (from 1988) to today's performance is really ignorant. Ever heard of progress? Technology advances. Discoveries are made. You have to appreciate the car from the time it was in being built with the techniques that were known. Like the Mona Lisa. In today's world, using photoshop, you could "hand paint" the same thing digitally, but it wouldn't be "better". Because cars are just utility to most people in the world, it's easy to overlook the art form of engineering and passion that the Ferraris of old (and today) exhibit.
Then compare it to what was around at the time, like the Buick GNX, and you'd still be unimpressed with the Testarossa for the price you would have paid.
Yes far more boring is what has happened since the 80:s! Nothing today feel or look as cool as this car. Interesting that a 94 Chevy Caprice cop car with the LT1 engine beats this (except the final speed), comes with 4 wheel ABS, and a trunk space to haul tons of police equipment (or two uncooperative suspects), and it costs 25K. Plus, it drives through center dividers.

In today's dollars a Testarossa would be $250K. The equivalent would be the F12berlinetta costing 320K. So it became more expensive but with better performance figures.

Ikr?
Had to stop the vid when he said it failed the test of having any bumpers...like wtf dude, just look at it. XD
The XJ220 had unassisted anti lock brakes.
6:30 “Silk italian suits from the land of pink flamingos” 😂😂
Willie B. Hardigan Bwaaaaaaaaahahahahahah
I've always loved the low boxy back end and the veins on the side.
gills!, not veins.
strakes, not gills
0:40 Oh how those engines sounded when new...
like these old reviews....watched this and lotus esprit.....reminds me that our faster car performance like my wrx is much cheaper to be had than it once was.......
This car is the 80s on wheels
6mos later they tested the 4cyl lotus esprit se and I was a full second faster in the 1/4 mile... I was 13 when I watched that.. I knew them I would own one.. and today I own 3 😂😂 all from the ass kicking it gave this car on this channel 😂😂
Glad to hear proper pronunciation.
This is and cnet on cars are the only car shows to watch
diver362 no need for fake accents . Sounds pretty dumb
And then it became one of the most iconic cars ever and still extremely desirable
In 1988, the price of gas is $.065/gallon. 10mpg, who care.
Nguyen lmao
6.5 cents? I think you meant $0.65/gal...
I remember 85 cents per gallon, in California.
There is a scene in the 1986 thriller “52 Pickup” where you see both the price of gas and the price of cigarettes.
Yoshiaki Ishida = ah...my lovely car.....
i like how you gave it an accent when saying testrossa....lol!
Lol a Spanish pronunciation of an Italian car by some random white guy
Sounds like Ricardo Montabon... I wonder if it has fine Corinthian leather?
He gave it the proper pronunciation. Spanish and Italian sound similar sometimes.
That almost made this unwatchable for me. It was as bas as a new cast suddenly going all mega spanish when the say Puerto Rico. Abd than instantly switch back to middle america white bread generic English
Brilliant! I love these vintage reviews.
When I was a kid the local Recycler had one for 18k, I tried so hard to get my Dad and Cousin to buy it. Neither listened to me.
I love these retro vids ,
Keep them coming
Always loved gingers :).
I'm still waiting on my Ferrari Testarossa I ordered
Apparently you have make payment before delivery
04:15 This guy's asleep at the wheel..
I think anyone would rather have the Ferrari.
But the 2018 Mustang GT has 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque for 35,000.
To this day this very model is the supreme "midlife crisis" car.
well said. I want 2.
In today's dollars a Testarossa would be $250K. The equivalent would be the F12berlinetta costing 320K. So it became more expensive but with better performance figures.
Oct 2019
Yes...
May 1951
eleventy-TWELVE
My stock Camaro w/ a $34,000 selling price blows the doors off this thing. Crazy how far power, ride, handling, and equipment have come since I was a kid in the 80s. I wonder if Sir Mix-A-Lot ever got any checks from Ferrari for advertising this model.
About the same performance as my 2004 forester xt. Amazing how times change
Forester is junk
Very nice how the journalist pronounces Testarossa first in US style, later in Italian :) Dope car!
Boy was he wrong at 6:20.. Saying the Lamborghini Countach lacked the Testarossa's resale potential... WAAAYYY wrong.. You can get a Testarossa these days for 50, 60 grand.. A Countach?? Cheapest one I could find was $315,000!!!!
bliglum You won't buy a Testa Rossa for 60 grand anywhere !!!
I've seen one or two that cheap where I live (southeast U.S.) But yes, for a GOOD one, it would be closer to 100K. : )Jacque Noir
bliglum No way !
There's a clean looking black one for sale right now in the Dupont registry NY for just 89K. Admittedly, the ones I saw for 50 or 60K probably needed some of that famously expensive Ferrari maintenance!Jacque Noir
bliglum
Its crazy how much the countach has gone up in value. I remember in 2011 seeing several for only a little over $100k.
Ever since I was in one with straight pipes, nothing else could measure up to that experience. It totally ruined me:(
Where is Sonny and Croket ?
Testarossa it means
“RED HEAD”
it means ginger
You mean Crockett and Tubbs
amazing how our take on what is fast has changed, a properly equipped full size pickup could keep up with this thing in a straight line, but what a pretty car, the styling still looks modern to this day
Merkur xr4ti please
oooh yes please
pbfloyd13 will do. I'll be crazy busy this week but I'm hoping to get some time.

+MotorWeek Do you have any archives of reviews of the Volvo 240/740 or 940? Those would be super cool to see!
That wide rear end still looks awesome...
