My wife has a serious dislike of whiskey. However, I have gotten her to like whiskey, specifically blended scotch, through a Sir William Smash, using lemon juice, blackberry, and mint. Good stuff.
As you were explaining this drink, I thought"All I have is bourbon and not regular whisky😢." Then you pulled out the exact bourbon that I have and I busted out laughing. Well I guess I'm making this drink today after all. Thank you. 😁
Just a quick fyi, bourbon is "regular" whiskey. Bourbon is just one subcategory of whiskey. Simply spreading the message on behalf of all magnificent bastards: the best whiskey is the whiskey you like, the way you like to enjoy it. Cheers!
There is no TH-cam video I’m more excited for. Anders, your the man. And Oz always makes the video better. I trust you Anders, but Oz gives a refreshingly honest take on any cocktail she taste. Top notch!!
I'm so glad you got the history right. Just so you know, when they mean "small plane", it means that it's served in an old fashioned glass. Juleps were originally served in pint glasses, or "large bar glasses".
Agree! Also the word “smash” probably meant “heavy”, this can be either two concepts; (i. They whiskey was less distilled or not filtered that well -or- (ii. It contained more whiskey than any other normal drink). It’s probably the first but I could be wrong. -anyway, love the drink and review ❤
A very slept-on cocktail. I'd love videos exploring different categories of drink! You mention "julep" as a category, "smash"; there are "bucks" and "sours"-a video on each category you would think important seems like a great idea!
Basil gin smash was an extremely pleasant experience. I prefer the basil over mint, irrespective of the spirit used. I could enjoy it with whiskey or rum as well.
What a coincidence! I just made my first whiskey smash a few nights ago. I was skeptical because I'm not a big fan of a Julep, but the lemon completely changes the drink. It's one of my favorites.
Fabulous Anders,,,yesterday i made for my sweet wife a Tequila( negro zafiro Tequila - extreme smooth spirit, incredible ) mint smash with a pinch of vanilla syrup,..and i got a gin lemon smash,.with a hint of mint syrup,..my gin was a marrakesh-gin with orange blossom water,.fresh taste....
I am in Knoxville and Ole Smokey is just up the road… SO, Ole Smokey peach Moonshine with smashed peaches, rich simple, and a little lemon, garnish with mint and a peach slice… BOOM, the Moonshine Peach Smash!! You’re WELCOME!!
One of the greatest joys of fridays is a new upload from You and the Wonderful Kevin Kos. Thank you Anders and Az for this incredible channel, and ty for kickstarting my growing obsession with cocktails. Your Old Fashioned video was the first cocktail video I ever watched. Since then I´ve now gotten a job at a bar, and im continuing to experiment and make cocktails af home on a weekly basis.
This is a great drink I make this all the time exactly the way you do it. Another whiskey Smash that I love is 2 oz of bourbon 1\2 oz honey syrup 2 slices of lemon Small sprig of rosemary. This cocktail is made exactly as the way you did in the video except I metal the rosemary and lemon together. It's an awesome drink
I love a whiskey smash. I was first introduced to them about 12 years ago at a local bar and fell in love. They are a summer staple at my house bar. To lighten it up and make it more refreshing in the summer, a little club soda brightens it up. A little ginger beer too makes a great spin on it.
Loved that you threw this one up on the channel. This became my wife's favorite cocktail last year. She ended up drinking more bourbon than me last summer...I was on a gin kick. It is an amazing cocktail.
only just started getting into making cocktails this past year, really wishing I'd found this channel sooner though lol. knowing how to make what I like at home definitely changes how I order when I do find myself at a bar!
Tried to make a twist on this cocktail yesterday and it was delicious! Bourbon 50ml, Apple liqueur 20ml, same amount as in video of lemon and mint, apple juice 20ml, bergamot syrup 10ml/elderflower 10ml. Fresh, sour, a bit grassy, oaky and flowery. Great video as always!
I just had a whiskey smash after a server recommended it, and I looked up to see if you had made a video on it yet so I could make it at home. Great coincidence!
Excited?!? Heck yeah! I’ve got a nice bed of mint that’s starting to pop and I made some simple syrup yesterday- it’s going to be a good afternoon 😃 thanks for the great videos!
Hey Anders! I added a few drops of Ango bitters in the second cocktail I made. Just added this little taste I missed in this lemon flavored cocktail. Very nice! Thanks for the inspiration 🙏. Whisky smash is here to stay ❤
It's so interesting the subtle differences in how people prepare this drink. Four summers ago this was my drink of choice. Then I made it with Rye whiskey and sometimes I'd muddle other fruit in, my favorite being raspberry (followed by watermelon). I like this better than the mint julep and this is my favorite cocktail of all time. I bought ingredients to make some this weekend. Going to use regular bourbon. Interesting how you took out the seeds; I never thought of that before.
one of my all time favorites, used to make it the exact same way, except with the bar's house bourbon Buffalo Trace, absolutely delectable on a warm spring evening.
I decided to make three different styles of these over the past day since I had most of the ingrediets at hand from my garden. First: buffalo trace bourbon, lime, lemon balm/mint. Second: Botanist gin, strawberry, and lemon balm. Third: Banhez Mezcal, Lime, Oregano with salt rim. All of them were delicious but the mezcal one was definitely my favorite.
This is one of my favorite cocktails! Big fan. More gin cocktails for the summer! My wife loves gin, and pretty much only gin 😂 Need more things to make her. Loving your channel since 2020 ish 🙌🏻
Watching this channel is so educational and fun at the same time. I always come away with more knowledge than I came in with. And this drink sounds particularly tasty!!
@@AndersErickson Fingers Crossed for a SMASH VARIATIONS video for Summertime? Black Berry Mezcal (or Bourbon) Smash, Gin Basil Smash, Peach Bourbon Smash (w/ mint leaves) , Maybe a Mezcal Watermelon Smash with TAJIN rim (because Tajin + Watermelon = MAGICAL), Gin Grapefruit Smash (w/ Thyme & Rosemary)... I could go on, but in Anders I trust.
Tried this tonight. Wonderful. Citrus and bourbon make some of my favorite drinks. Excellent balance on this drink. Anders, if you wrote a book of your cocktails I loved it'd rival an encyclopedia.
Wow, love this! It’s like the love child of a julep and a mojito. Probably sacrilege, but you could almost add a bit of soda to make it a bit longer and it would literally be an American mojito. Superb!
I’ve made this drink about 4 times now… since watching the video. Even when I ran out of mint, I mixed the rest and loved it. Thank you for introducing us to so many great drinks in the perfect way. Continues to be my favorite TH-cam channel out there!!!
Bravo, Anders! Was wondering when you’d get around to doing smashes. These are a staple in our cocktail rotation. Especially in the summer. Our favorite version is blackberry-lemon bourbon smash, but we’ve done raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, and even orange. And while we typically use mint, we’ve also used basil. And I agree that Demerara is probably the best for smashes, we’ve also used ginger, cinnamon, and maple simple syrup. The combinations are endless!
The whiskey smash is a good summer drink I usually make them with Buffalo trace bourbon fresh lime juice and Demerara syrup and cherries for garnish and soda water
A surprisingly delicious drink. I usually avoid drinks with mint. In my case, I'm always going for a whiskey sour instead of the whiskey smash. But I tried the whiskey smash (with a rye whiskey) and it is good. I really like it.
Another great video as always! Keep up the good work you two. I love it when Oz tries the cocktail because she’s so honest. Also your chemistry adds so much to the wholesome crunch of the videos. Keep ‘em coming you two!
Love this, I recently got a bottle of Old Granddad 100 proof (its hard to find here!) because I wanted to try the Paper Plane your way, and now I have another application for it! My favorite smash is the Gin Basil Smash - so unusual, but amazing! Cheers Anders and Az, have a good weekend!
I found a recipe last summer that was a whiskey smash with some fresh peach muddled with the lemon. Can't remember what is was called, but it was fantastic. Gonna be picking up some peaches to recreate it. I love this drink when it's hot out - which is a LOT of the time in Tennessee!
I made it just as suggested but added blackberries, and since my mint isn't growing yet i used (1-2 drops) peppermint essential oil which was super potent. I made my simple syrup with maple/water. I will be doing this often to try variations.
I was introduced to a version of this last year at (wait for it) a whisky festival. I've made it a few times since. Quite refreshing and delicious. Just served them last weekend as an intro to an Irish whisky tasting night :)
I find this is delicious with a flavored whiskey (peach or blackberry Bird Dog is what I use) and cutting out the syrup and letting the sweetness of the flavored whiskey take over
Anders this channel makes my day. Every time..... It is just positive vibes and delicious drinks. Oz'z opinion ;) ( Hi from Australia! Oz..) is as refreshing as the content. Keep it up you two, love your work. :)
I'm getting excited for spring. Who's ready for some warm weather cocktails?
Now if only the Chicago weather would cooperate 🙃
@@metonymic896 exactly!
Its been raining for a month in So Cal and today is the first day of sunshine - perfect for this cocktail - thanks Anders and Az

How about a Gin Basil Smash?
You know it's extra delicious when Az goes for multiple sips!

The editing on this channel really is fantastic. Doesn't get said enough. Awesome content.
Have to give Az all the credit there. Thanks for your comment, David - Cheers
Agreed
Really on par with James Hoffman I find, which I mean as a very high compliment.

A while ago I made a blueberry gin smash and it was genuinely one of the best drinks I've ever made. So simple yet so packed with flavors!
Blueberry.. flavoured gin? Or with literal blueberries, substituted in for lemons, done in the same way as in this video?
Basil gin smash was an extremely pleasant experience. I prefer the basil over mint, irrespective of the spirit used.
I could enjoy it with whiskey or rum as well.
I’ll have to try basil! Not a fan of mint in my drinks
Basil and Mint closely related botanically speaking.
Try Thai basil with whiskey. The anise notes work well.
I'm in love with a cucumber basil smash! Thank you for the great videos, keep 'em coming!

Thanks for the best whisky smash recipe. I tried it two times … first one too sour and the second too sweet. Third times’ a charm. Thanks! 😊

Love it when Oz comes and enjoys the libations.
Sorry, Az
Love me a smash. I swapped the bourbon for botanist gin and used just a rich white sugar syrup and it was outstanding.
My first ever smash was a brandy basil smash. Very adaptable cocktail
This was a delightful cocktail. Made one with rye and one with straight bourbon, and both were great.
