    My wife has a serious dislike of whiskey. However, I have gotten her to like whiskey, specifically blended scotch, through a Sir William Smash, using lemon juice, blackberry, and mint. Good stuff.

      Agree! Also the word “smash” probably meant “heavy”, this can be either two concepts; (i. They whiskey was less distilled or not filtered that well -or- (ii. It contained more whiskey than any other normal drink). It’s probably the first but I could be wrong. -anyway, love the drink and review ❤

    A very slept-on cocktail. I'd love videos exploring different categories of drink! You mention "julep" as a category, "smash"; there are "bucks" and "sours"-a video on each category you would think important seems like a great idea!

    Bravo, Anders! Was wondering when you’d get around to doing smashes. These are a staple in our cocktail rotation. Especially in the summer. Our favorite version is blackberry-lemon bourbon smash, but we’ve done raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, and even orange. And while we typically use mint, we’ve also used basil. And I agree that Demerara is probably the best for smashes, we’ve also used ginger, cinnamon, and maple simple syrup. The combinations are endless!

  • @Nasosdag
    @Nasosdag ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought the smash was an augmentation of a sour... (base spirit, lemon juice, sweetener) + (muddled herb). But as recorded history shows us, it is indeed a sub-category of a julep.

  • @Kevin-to2bt
    @Kevin-to2bt ปีที่แล้ว

    Fan of leaving out the lemon, but adding more mint. Is this just a quicker version of the julep, but without the straw or a large amount of ice that causes dilution in the Julep. Is it still a smash? Have I created a monster? 2.5 oz. bond whiskey; 10-12 mint leaves; 0.25 to 0.5 oz. demerara sugar (2:1); add ice to shaker; shake; double-strain to a chilled glass with ice, or without.

    Nice ... also really like the chemistry between you and your wife. Very positive, upbeat and happy. My first time seeing your clips. Do you or have you made a bramble? I have a Bombay bramble that I like, but someone critiqued it and pointed out the artificial quality of the flavour ... now I can REALLY taste that. So do you have a recipe that you have video'd? It is I think , from limited research a very old recipe. er gin, blackberry and raspberry.

    Ah yes, we are getting oh so close to the Triple Crown Season. The Mint Julep, The Black Eyed Susan and of course the Belmont Jewel. The Derby is May 6th, The Preakness is May 20 and The Belmont is June 10.
    I have had many arguments over the years about which is better, the Smash or the Julep. Many have said there is little difference, while most would say it is either the ice or the particular glassware. I have broken up fights over what type of sweetener; blood has been shed over berry sugar, powdered sugar or syrup.
    Hey, did Az raid your closet ?
    Anyways, these are tasty sippers to drink on weekends and are easily scaled to suit the crowd.

    I love whiskey smashes, but as somebody who likes the measure my ingredients, I'm always a bit wary of the fact that "half a lemon" is quite a fuzzy measurement. I get that the point is to muddle the lemons to get the oils as well, but couldn't you specify a measure of lemon juice (1/2 oz) and then add some lemon twists into the shaker for the oils? Of course, there wouldn't be any smashing if anything anymore, but it would be more repeatable. Or is this recipe really that forgiving wrt lemon juice vs. syrup?

    • @AndersErickson
      @AndersErickson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point - though you'd be taking the "smash" out of the Smash, the end result would most likely be more consistent and refined. I'm happy with that drink evolution. Cheers!
