In Louisville I learned an old fashioned recipe called the "sweater weather Old Fashioned". 2 oz bourbon/rye, .5 oz maple syrup, half bar spoon of vanilla bean paste (think...dime size), ango bitters. Stir, pour over a rock, garnish/stir with cinnamon stick. It's incredible.
Do you know how one can tell someone has truly "made it" and is a highly successful "TH-camr"? When they show how relaxed and comfortable they are in their own skin when creating content. I have been a fan of yours the entire time, watching all your videos, growing my amateur mixology hobby, all due to you. But for some reason in this episode, you really look relaxed, confident and comfortable. Bravo, and a great episode indeed. Four new ones to try! Well three - who hasn't made an Old Fashioned. Cheers and thanks!
That smoked maple old fashioned though. Daaamn!!! That’s how I make my house old fashion during the fall. But I’ve never tried to smoke it. That’s a must do. Thanks for the idea Anders.
Been planning for this exact thing since I stumbled on a cocktail smoking kit earlier in the year. It came with cherry, apple, and mesquite woods to start. But then my small torch quit, so now I need to replace it. I was inspired by a local cocktail creation called “The Smoking Gun”. Basically an old fashioned, with two major enhancements. The Bulleitt bourbon was washed with browned butter first. Second was that it was served in a mason jar, with the smoke piped in at the finish, then sealed in with a screw down lid. You then had the option to either simply remove the lid, making for a lighter smoke flavor in the drink, or by shaking it first, infusing a heavier smoke profile. Really fun, and delicious to boot!
Love smokey drinks. Came up with a the 'Intercontinental SMOKEY old fashioned': 1oz Tallisker 10yr, 1oz Woodford, 1 tsp raw sugar, 2 shakes whiskey barrel bitters and stir down over ice. Smoke rocks with dried thyme sprig in smoking chamber (can do 3 x drinks at a time in a large chamber). Strain over an Anders cube and garnish with Orange zested and cherry marinaded in Rye.With a Havana... but smoking is carcinogenic...disclaimer.
I'm not a black currant fan (plus I didn't want to go buy another bottle), so I tried the Bourbon Renewal with Creme de Mure instead and it was just okay. Because I have a bottle of Starlight bourbon finished in apricot brandy barrels, I then tried it with Apricot liqueur and used Orange bitters. A much better variation.
I will be trying these out soon. I got a cocktail smoking kit for Xmas last year that I need to play with. Something I would like to see is a video about cocktails for wheated bourbons. I have a daughter and some friends who don't like the rye-forward bourbons as much. I know that they are wrong , but would be interested in ideas that play off the different flavor notes of a Makers Mark 46 or Larceny.
Your smoked maple old fashioned reminds me of the old fashioned riff I like to make at home! 2 oz bourbon, 1/4 oz maple syrup, 1/4 oz falernum, 2 dashes of angostura, a dash of whatever other bitters I'm feeling, orange oil overtop (optional), and a dried lime wheel for garnish 😄
(I use a home-dried lime wheel, and if you sip this one slowly, the lime slowly rehydrates and seeps lime flavor into the drink over time, making the end of the drink have a much more tiki kinda vibe)
I love this one from Modern Tiki: Poison Apple 1 oz Zaya rum 1 oz Berentzen Apple Liqueur 1/2 oz lemon juice 1 tsp allspice dram 1/4 oz maple syrup cinnamon stick, for garnish
I make a modified Old Fashioned for the fall/winter months. I use a spiced semi-rich turbinado syrup infused with cinnamon, elderberry, and cardamom, and smoked bitters from a local whiskey distillery. Since I can’t smoke my cocktails just yet, the bitters help give that smokey flavor while balancing the sweetness. 👌 Edit: can’t wait to try some of these!
Awesome! Anxious to add these to my lineup of fall cocktails. I play around with various combinations of bourbon or rye, apple cider, maple simple, cinnamon simple, walnut bitters, and lemon juice - fall whiskey sours is what I call them.
Love bourbon; love whiskey; love Fall… I will be trying them all! If I like the rye drink, I’ll know how to use the rye that I keep on hand for when my dad visits… which is never. You guys are great!!
Love these. I really only make an old fashioned with maple syrup for the sweetener. However, haven't used walnut bitters before, so I'll need to grab a bottle.
Jack Rose for fall (and, well, whenever) I do like the Bourbon Revival--thanks for reminding me why I have a bottle in the fridge. Will try the others!
I tried making a fall concoction it was split base .75 Plantation OFTD, .75 Bulleit Rye, .5 Amaro Nonino, .5 Pierre Frand Curacao, dash of Peychaud's bitters. IT TASTED EXACTLY LIKE SWEET RAWHIDE Not sure if I liked it, but I couldn't put it down, it was fascinating lol
Not usually a flavored whisky fan, but you brought up apple cider. Toasted Caramel whisky in apple cider is one of the best things for fall. I usually use Black Velvet Toasted Caramel, but that’s because I’m too lazy to look for an alternative 😂 try it out
Thanks Anders! I have been watching you for a while now. Started back in 2020 when I started my new career “Stay at Home Bartender” 😊 Just mixed up the first whiskey drink (used bourbon 😬) it sounded sooo good! At first I was going to just mix the drink and leave out the smoke ingredient, because didn’t really know how I could do it with what was available to me. And because of your inspiration… figured it out. Used a pecan on an electric burner 😂😂 the drink is (was) excellent and am going to make another 😮 Signed, I’ll have another/ Where there’s a will there’s a way
At a favorite Brunch location, I always order a Breakfast Old Fashion which is quite similar to your Smoked Maple but without the smoke and it has a couple dashes of chocolate bitters also. Now I'm gonna have to smoke one. Thanks!

You can experiment with the schnapps stuff on that basis.
I generally use maple syrup in my Old Fashions. The syrup, 3 dashes of angostura bitters, double shot of 100 proof rye, orange peel, and smoke. Will have to try walnut bitters.

Just made the Fall Back, remembered it as another cocktail with applejack after seeing your applejack cocktail video the other day. I’ll get to those later! I subbed Bokamaro from North Shore Distillery here in Chicagoland for the Amaro Nonino. It’s a little lighter, they distill it from bok choy, you should give it a try Anders! The cocktail turned out great. Love the channel!
Yay for fall, cause I do loves me my whiskey cocktails, and they do oh so fit in the fall. Thank you for some new ones Anders! You've never done me wrong (almost. You sneak in the absinthe from time to time, and that is the liquid anti-Dusty)
The Junior sounds very interesting, especially after you placed it, taste-wise, between two of my favorites, the Lion's Tail and the Monte Cassino! It will be made! Cheers!
OK, let's see. I think the recipes are good and tasty, but it is very difficult to have all those rare ingredients in home like the Bénédictine D.O.M. or the Jules Theuriet Crème de Cassis de Dijon or the Amaro Nonino and the Peychaud’s Bitters. So i will love you to prepare cocktails with more "realistic" ingredients so we can prepare them at home... No todos tenemos una barra tan amplia y con tantos licores diferentes. EN fin, soy un gran fan de tu canal y he aprendido mucho. Thanks Anders.
"... alternative to throwing whiskey in your apple cider." *me mid-sip of whiskey in apple cider* I don't have the Nonino stuff, but I do have half a bottle of SNAP that is herby and woody and might do the trick in a pinch. The Fall Back is the one I'm going to try out on my next evening. Though, the bourbon and cassis is calling my name pretty loudly and I do have both of those, as well as fresh lemons on hand.... Both? Both is good.
The Fallback looks nice. I was thinking of trying to play around with an applejack this fall. My initial thoughts were actually trying Rye, Applejack, and Benedictine.
Excellent as always - I think you've inspired me to make my first smoked cocktail. Also recently bought a bottle of bonded Laird's and some calvados to prepare for the season, so keep 'em coming.
About 45 years ago, one of my best friends, and who's still a friend today, and a Scotch drinker, then and now, was listening to Steely Dan's "Deacon Blues" for the first time, and heard them sing, "Drink Scotch whisky all night long....". He exclaimed, "Scotch isn't whisky!" So, I said, "Sit down, my son...." And I didn't even drink the stuff.
Absolutely love the bourbon renewal, thank you for introducing it to me on your original video. I have modified my personal recipe a little by subbing cinnamon simple, which I feel gives a little more fall vibes. Great video as always!
Hey Anders! Would you ever consider including alternatives to liqueurs in your videos/descriptions, if you’re using a bottle that not everyone might have? I’d love to make the Fallback but I don’t have any Applejack and wonder if there’s a liqueur I’d have in my simple home bar that would do!
Since I don’t have a bourbon stave to marinate my glass with smoke, if the cocktail calls for rocks, I’ll put the ice in the glass then smoke it. The smoke sticks to the ice and wet glass.
Have you thought about putting it a cocktail recipe book. One with your original recipes as well as traditional cocktails that have been tweeked to your liking. I haven't found a recipe you've changed the ratios too that I haven't liked and would enjoy a recipe book full of them. Cheers.
I will definitely try a fall back because fall is here and I was just craving a Jack Rose. Please do more Fall Cocktail videos by base spirit before we get into the rich and sugary holiday vids! Cheers.
Hi Anders….I’m loving this “fall” vibe👌👌👌 and not 1, but 4 cocktails-you’re a rockstar!🤗🤗….I love whiskey based drinks-I think I would choose “the junior”…..Have a great weekend and as always “CHEERS!”🍷😁😁❤️❤️

Cheers.
My preferred method of smoking a whiskey cocktail is to use a half ounce nice smokey Scotch, with an ounce and a half of bourbon, or rye.

1:19 - the theater of making the Old Fashioned would have me order it immediately!
Thanks Anders! We are enjoying our Juniors as we watch TH-cam. ❤
A fantastic quartet of drinks. Will try them all!
Happy weekend
Great video! Personally I love a Lion’s Tail as a fall drink.
The bigger issue is when people think Southern Comfort is whiskey! I tell people that brown doesn’t mean whiskey!!!
I make a maple old fashioned year-round, but I don't know how to smoke drinks. Guess it's time to learn!
It's easy to smoke a whiskey cocktail, just sub in ½ once of smokey Scotch for ½ ounce of whatever whiskey you're using.
LOVE your happy, entertaining, and educational videos! Would it be terrible to make the Smoked Maple Old-Fashioned a "plain" Maple Old-Fashioned?
Hi Anders….I’m loving this “fall” vibe👌👌👌 and not 1, but 4 cocktails-you’re a rockstar!🤗🤗….I love whiskey based drinks-I think I would choose “the junior”…..Have a great weekend and as always “CHEERS!”🍷😁😁❤️❤️
Definitely give the Junior a try - mighty tasty. You enjoy your weekend as well!
What’s a good alternative to those of us with nut allergies but want something different than orange or angostura bitters
I'd still like to hear your take on a "Fall Back" cocktail! You can call it Anders' Autumn
EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED, I LOVE FALL COCKTAILS
Could you conceivable use liquid smoke for the Smokey flavor?
Just discovered your channel. Great content!!! Love your recipes!!
Its a gloomy fall day outside - I think I want some whiskey, cheers!🥃
This is what the people want.
You make me laugh every time I watch your videos
