The trick, the secret to Helmet, lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Paige Hamilton is a jazz level guitarist; it's not just the super-tight heavy guitar, it's the rests, the cadence, the rests and silence between the chords, it just sounds "chunka-chunka" at first listen, but it is actually advanced guitar songwriting and chord voicings, disguised as pedestrian heavy metal
Brilliantly written, friend. Yes that riff employs ingenious missed beat syncopations and resumes at times in between the beats. Positively, rhythmically kickass.
Legendary band! They're somehow criminally underrated but also massively influential. If Page Hamilton could get royalties from all the albums he influenced he would be a very rich man. The album this song comes from, Meantime is a banger from start to finish.

Helmet's album "Strap It On" Is the greatest-ever, the entire flippin' record, man. "Blacktop" is probably my favorite track from that record. That record came out before "Meantime" which is the album "Unsung" is on, or at least this version. I saw Helmet twice on the "Strap It On" tour around 1991, once with The Melvins and again when they were on their own. Tiny little club show, hot and sweaty. Thing about Helmet is that singer/guitarist Page Hamilton studied jazz guitar and moved to New York to get a graduate degree in jazz, he writes riffs with what he calls "swing". Helmet can hit a groove and really run with it. The other thing about Helmet is that they had a very clean-cut image. I remember bassist Henry Bogdoan looking like Dylan from the show "Beverly Hills 90210". Page Hamilton didn't look like a rocker, either. None of them did. But they were rippin'.

Garage sound at its finest. There were so many house bands in the nineties. If you showed up at a house party this is what it sounded like. I think Buddy Holly would have thumbs up this one
Helmet is a smash mouth, raw, and very raucous kick ass Metal favorite of mine. Have loved this band from the very first time I heard them "Meantime" is a must!
Helmet! They were alternative metal/nu metal, kind of punk in the '90s and '00s. When this song came out on radio back in the early '90s, I was a teen. Many of us thought it was Ozzie had joined a grunge band or some hardcore punk band like Anthrax. lol. This was back during the early '90s alternative rock explosion, when bands like this were hitting mainstream. Many great bands. Then we seen the video and heard they were Helmet, what? Short hair punks, instead of long haired metal band. They were influenced by Sabbath for sure. They helped influenced future bands like Chevelle, Mostodon, Deftones, Godsmack and others. Other good songs/videos to check out from Helmet are "Milquetoast", "Crashing Foreign Cars" (early 2000s) , "In The Meantime", "Wilma's Rainbow", "Just Another Victim" rap/metal collab with rappers with rappers House of Pain from mid '90s movie/soundtrack Judgement Night. Lots of good rap/metal/punk collabs on Judgement Night.

Glad y'all finally got around to checking out some Helmet. The next band from that era to check out would be Girls Against Boys. I recommend the song Raindrop as an intro to the sound or anything from the Cruise Yourself album.
Helmet were like Bizarro-Tool. Both emerged about the same time in the early 90s, both bringing a new sound to metal that hadn't existed prior. But where Tool's metal was infused with more elaborately orchestrated progressive elements, Helmet's brought a minimalist, more meat-and-potatoes, almost punky driving tone to their sound. Makes a certain sense when you consider Tool was a West Coast / L.A. band and Helmet came out of NYC.
Saw helmet open for Manson on the antichrist superstar tour. They are the loudest band I've seen in over a hundred shows. Awesome show and a great band.

still have this on my playlist, never gets old
Such a great band. Glad the two of you finally got to 'em 🤘
Love Helmet! Saw them with Sepultura and Ministry in 1992. LOUD show!
Lex, I’ve never heard Sabbath when I listened to Helmet, but you are exactly right. Great ear.
It's crazy to think I remember hearing this song on the radio 30 years ago when I was in high school that was the first thing that everyone that heard this song back then said the lead singer sounded like Black Sabbath Era Ozzy fun fact this song mainly the guitar de-tuning helped create the Nu-Metal sound the Korn made popular
I used to watch the video on Headbanger's Ball.
@@jack-of-all-trades1234 same here, I miss those days!
Glad y'all finally got around to checking out some Helmet. The next band from that era to check out would be Girls Against Boys. I recommend the song Raindrop as an intro to the sound or anything from the Cruise Yourself album.
Down to earth dudes. You'd see Page Hamilton skating at Burnside when they would be in Portland.
Nice! Same era: Clutch, Shogun Named Marcus. You might want to watch the video and have the lyrics handy. 🤟🍻🍻
Dude this was my jam for awhile back in the day!
I never noticed the Ozzy voice influence, but I hear a similarity for sure.
This is the hardest melodic punk you could ever hear!
Helmet always reminded me of a more radio friendly version of Unsane, Or maybe Unsane and the Foo Fighters had a baby lol
One of my favorite bands for about 30 years!! Check out anything from Betty, Aftertaste, Monochrome, Meantime, Size Matters, I can keep going
When this came out they said helmet would be the next Nirvana
Helmet to me is the perfect blend of grunge and nu. Metal
Helmet's Give It is dope af. Groovy, chunky riffs.
in the meantime , give it , Wiallmas rainbow
Hell yeah Brad!!! Eff the lyrics!!!
This is the most accessible song on the album. The rest of it will blow you away even more!
Singer guitarist Page Hamilton studied jazz guitar at the University of Manhattan in NYC
At last someone has reacted to the amazing Helmet. So funky. Brilliant drumming.. Try Iron Head
Thank u for a helmet reaction, loved these guys growing up
Another band along similar lines u may like is quicksand, they had some great tunes too
This song just plain rocks! Happy to see you guys find this deep cut!
Saw helmet open for Manson on the antichrist superstar tour. They are the loudest band I've seen in over a hundred shows. Awesome show and a great band.
