I got into Helmet in unususal order and I suspect it has something to do with which albums I love the most. "Born annoying" and "Aftertaste", but Helmet did no wrong in previous century.
Helmet will send you on a rabbit hole as the improvements with each album is greatly noticeable. You mentioned the Idles, have you discovered Soft Play yet? They released an album a few months back and if the Idles are your cup of tea the Soft play is a must (and very much a modern take on early Idles). Also, Grade 2 are worthy of a listen if you fancy some current UK no nonsense punk. Lastly, a must listen is the Irish band, And So I Watch You From Afar. They dropped an album last month called Megafauna and it is something to behold, they are very much a Math rock band with little to no lyrics (if they do sing then they prefer harmonious sounds as they want everybody to join in, no matter their native tongue). They truly create music with euphoria and the live performances are magical! Just a few picks for your list. Always enjoy the hang when you release a new video, keep 'em coming :)
Thanks for the shoutout at the beginning! Helmet is just fantastic, so glad you're getting into their music as well. Their drummer John Stanier is incredible, he always brings amazing energy to his playing, and I love the jazz influence as well that they have. Strap It On is a great start for them but they really come into form on Meantime, their next album. It is a must listen in my opinion, a 10/10 album! I also just listened to their third record Betty which introduces some really atmospheric elements into their music, a bit less of the punk style. Anyway, glad you've also fallen down the Helmet rabbit hole and I look forward to seeing what you'll think of their next two albums.
@@snuffcore9686 Actually, the reverse is true. Jawbox has cited Helmet as an influence. Helmet pre-dates Jawbox by a substantial period of time. (...jus' sayin'....)

Hey Kira! Absolutely thrilled you're checking out Helmet. They're probably my favorite band of the 90s. Their second album Meantime is absolutely perfect. One of the few albums I always listen to from start to finish every time. I hope you do a full album reaction to it. Cheers
The term 'alt' metal for a band like Helmet actually encompasses many genres that the band covers, whether it's groovy, post-hc, grunge, noise rock, something jazzy... really great albums (at least the early ones). My favorite is Betty. I hope you get to react to it someday 😌
I think PRONG is the band you'd probably want to listen to next. They base a lot of their style on very similar genres to Helmet. The 'Cleansing' or 'Beg to Differ' albums would be the two I'd recommend. Listen to the song 'Beg to differ' and you'll see the similarities.
I got into Helmet in 94 after Page Hamilton guested on a track for Irish indie rockers Therapy? and the Judgement Night soundtrack, their album Betty, is still on my phone today. IIRC, they were the first band to give Nirvana a support slot on a national tour.

@@kirawasareactor Betty is probably one of their more “experimental” albums (at least, at the time it came out), but their sound developed SO well on it. I think you’ll love the album as a whole :)
If you like Helmet, you should check out the band Snapcase, a great example of what hardcore turned into in the 90’s and a great example of Helmet’s influence. I would recommend the Steps EP.
Such a classic album...def tough one to start on as it was raw as jell...next album Meantime streamlined the sound, but such an influential album and band. Def put The Jesus Lizard, Prong, Killing Joke and Godflesh on your radar too.
I'm quite sure that Helmet is one of the main influences of Tool, you can definitely hear that. All these weird rhythms, the interesting breaks and the dominant bass parts plus the fact that the music covers multiple genres.
Great reaction Kira! Helmet has been in my top 5 favorite bands since I was first turned onto them in 1993. They never blew up commercially, but have influenced many bands. I would suggest checking out the band Quicksand as well. Their first album, "Slip" is great.
strap it on, meantime, betty... absolutely the helmet trifecta! personally i dig albums 4 and 5 (aftertaste and size matters), but after that i only enjoy a smattering of tracks from paige hamiltons next 4 albums.
I didnt even need to watch the video to subscribe to your channel. Ive never seen a Helmet reaction. They are one of the greatest. Thank you and thanks algorithm
Deftones did a cover of Sinatra btw!!! Definitely worth listening to, sounds a bit more polished and aggressive. Also just speaks volumes of how much Helmet inspired Deftones.
"Slightly reminds me of Gang of Four". Now that's an attentive listener! There were probably countless bands inspired by them but that reminded me of Don Caballero, a less aggressive (earlier stuff is heavier, later is less so and more experimental), more mathy, jazzy (in terms of drumming) band from the same posthardcore era. Their drummer was heavily into Gang of Four, though at first it's not an obvious influence. And also if you want to take it into a less aggressive but still adventurous direction - Polvo, Slint, Lowercase, Faraquet - not too many reactions to those bands.
Helmet stay true to form throughout their discography; there is a commonality among tone and rythymic patterns from album to album. Meantime and Betty progress through production quality and structure refinement. Based on how you appear to appreciate these tracks, I can't imagine you disliking their later stuff. I'm partial to Betty, myself. My observations of your reactions to other bands--many of which I too am fond of--lead me to believe you would also thoroughly enjoy several bands I want to recommend that you may likewise be missing in your life up untill now. I'll leave the following seeds here for you to sow at your leisure: Prong, Filter, Hum, Deftones, and Fugazi each share a variety of qualities with Helmet--but mostly on the mellower more digestible side of this list. Whereas the bands, Coalesce, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Botch--my favorite--lean more into hardcore loudness, fast mathmatical rythyms, and complex odd time changes. Botch's We Are the Romans album is particularly exciting and uniquely dynamic. The tracks "To Our Friends in the Great White North", "Saint Matthews Returns to the Womb", and "Frequency Ass Bandit" are my top picks. "Do what thou wilt..." Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights, and for reading this far.
YES! This album is sooooo good. Nothing like it before or since. Stanier's drumming is highest level. That SNARE! The album after this is a little more "mainstream?" But they've never made a made album IMO.
This band so incredible, so real! This album very instrumental as a youngster learning to play guitar and getting in alt rock. it's an extension of their previous Born Annoying cuz Meantime onwards they became a lot more streamlined, less noisy (apart from In The Meantime and Milquetoast) and more heavy groove oriented. Very influential band to later huge alt metal bands such as Deftones and such.. Helmet very much the epitomy of noise rock to a larger audience eventually..Meantime went platinum in the US crazy enough due relentless touring and MTV videos exposure.. still boggles my mind Page being academically trained jazz guitar player going for this total left field kinda band approach, love it!! Love your genuine reaction on this!! Too many fakers on TH-cam these days.. instant like and sub!! 😍😍😍👍🏻👍🏻🙂🙂
I did not know that you also like jazz. I love jazz! Since also also like punk, here's a wild suggestion for you: "Midori (ミドリ)" Japanese jazz-punk/post hardcore fusion band, defunct for a decade or more now. Really interesting stuff, and their lead singer/guitarist Mariko Goto was crazy on stage.
You seriously need to check out Life Of Agony. One of the best and most underrated rock bands of the 90's and another great alternative metal band. There debut album River Runs Red is very Helmet-esque, tons of great slow heavy riffs, great change ups with plenty of groove and aggressive vocals. Rollins Band and Danzig are also other great alt metal bands worth checking out.

Sorry if this is spammy but just a clarification, I brought up post hardcore because you mentioned liking post punk but I don't want to mess with expectations!! This album is still primarily an early take on noisy alt metal by a trained jazz/blues mucisian and the like. Theres a wide range of influences. Post hardcore ties are secondary. Page did mention being a fan of big black which is phc style noise rock. Steve albini of that band produced their second album. And they signed to amphetamine reptile, which was known for that sound. As well as had splits with post-hardcore/noise rock/punk style bands. The bassist and drummer came from a hardcore background, he heard the drummer play frantically like in hc and thought hey thats just what I need. In their later era a new york hardcore rooting member joined for guitar/bass for a bit. Theyd also associate with some other phc bands like mark of cain and orange 9mm. Buut thre were also members unrelated to the genre. It then influenced a whole buncha alt metal, groove metal, post-hardcore, nu metal, etc. Its a unique sound you couldn't find in many places. I didn't expect to see post-hardcore here but I guess it makes sense considering it has alt metal in it too! Considering you liked 80s hardcore and love post-punk, theres probably a good bit of post-hardcore you'll love. Try something like Shellacs first album (earlier they had r*peman and big black)or the Jesus Lizard (earlier they had Scratch Acid which sounds closer to post punk). They're noise rock style post-hardcore like this but without the alt metal. Or if you wan the vocals more intense theres stuff like Dazzling Killmen, Craw and Big'N. Edit: random examples of more metal/hard rock influenced post-hardcore includes stuff like Unsane, The Cutthroats 9 (related to insane), Quicksand, Refused, Mark of Cain, Jawbreaker, to some extent early deftones, Orange 9MM, Will Haven, Ken Mode, the Catalyst (swallow your teeth), Akimbo, Rollins Band, and Snapcase. Edit2: oha and if you really like post punk..can't go wrong with NoMeansNos Wrong! They're from the early hc scene so this term is applied kinda retroactively. They have collaborated with Jello from the Dead Kennedys as they were on his lable.
@@kirawasareactor I love seeing your enthausiasm for metal/rock/punk and I know a lot about posthc/punk so I'm always willing to help people fine bands! While there is ZERO "competing with" John Stanier (and none of the players, ever, ATTEMPTED to do that! -Wisely!);
the band has created BEAUTIFULLY VISCERAL (and groove-oriented!) material even further into their career/their "reboot career" (since the early '00s (aughts)). [i e.: After they lost Stanier/Stanier departed because the band was broken-up (or on "unannounced hiatus," at the vey keast!)]
-Albums such as: Size Matters [likely my, overall, favorite 🤘🤘];
Seeing Eye Dog;
Left (their most recent outing):
Dead To The World;
even: Monochrome
...all have, unique, voices and indelibly powerful impact!👊👊👊👊🔥
Hamilton, alao, worked with: [Essentially, the unintentional founder of "noise rock"], tge ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY:
GLENN BRANCA,
as well.
Glenn Branca trained and played with: numerous guitarists who would come to define or represent the New York scene, in the late '89s and '90s-'00s.
...Most importantly, perhaps:
Lee Ranaldo
and
Thurston Moore
who would go on to form:
Sonic Youth
, with: the indelible
Kim Gordon
and
Steve Shelley!
🤘🤘
I have never heard any of Paige Hamilton's work with Mr. Branca
...I have no idea how much, if any, was ever recorded, eben!🤷🤷🤦
...but: if it exists?? it would be worth finding and hearing!
🤘🤘
KIRA LISTENING TO HELMET? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
hiiii fernando hope you're well!!
@@kirawasareactor igualmente voos!!
Betty is one of my favs albums 🤓australiana
wow everyone keeps mentioning Betty in the comments!!
@@kirawasareactor hype hype hype!!! 😁

i highly recommend the band Mudshark. If you like Helmet with a tiny bit of Grunge melodies they might very well be up your alley
At this point you should react to Willpower by Today is The Day. Pure aggression
They have collaborated with Jello from the Dead Kennedys as they were on his lable.
thank you for the recs!!!
@@kirawasareactor I love seeing your enthausiasm for metal/rock/punk and I know a lot about posthc/punk so I'm always willing to help people fine bands! I added some metallic stuff in the comments if you needed a bridge of sorts as the regular styles are quite different. Helmet was revolutionary for a reason. Nu metal really went with those bounce riffs.
Second that. Would add Killdozer, Cherubs and Unsane to that list. Also maybe into the other more "accessible" direction - Jawbox and Quicksand.
@oblomoff-reich Those are good additions! I had already added a metal influenced post hc section and added unsane there (it leans more phc compared to helmet but still).
Yep, UNSANE
"Scattered, Smothered & Covered".......picks - 'Scrape'
JUST ANOTHER VICTIM off the JUDGEMENT NIGHT soundtrack w/HOUSE OF PAIN and their cover of BJORK ARMY OF ME both kill it (actually the entire JUDGEMENT NIGHT soundtrack kills it)
you have to listen to betty…their best album. so freaking catchy and aggresive.
You should listen to Grimes, is electronic music and produced only by her, shes so talented, i reccomend you HALFAXA and VISIONS of course her best albums of all time but her debut could be a little introduction to her etereal world
All of their stuff is at least pretty good. Strap It On, Meantime, Betty and Aftertaste are great. After that, there was a 7 year hiatus and the band lineup had changed. Page was going to make it a solo project, but ultimately decided to stick with the name.
FUCK YES, please do MEANTIME and then BETTY, they get better and better trust me
Like dropped. Will have to watch later. 😊
Don't litter the page.
@@JimmyRJump Jimmy nice to see you in my comment section!! Hope you're doing well? :)
If you get a chance you need to listen to Ghost - Meliora go in to it blind!
Meshuggah broken cog next(there’s a video to it too)
Can you please review The Ramones album Too Tough To Die?
The Mark of Cain.
Just wait till you listen to Meantime.
Meantime, their sophmore set, is much more listenable imo. They are far more interested in chaotic arythmic sound with this album. I feel like they became a bit to smooth by Betty, but they are still pretty great even than...
kira you’ll like “doggystyle” by snoop dogg its the follow up from dre’s “the chronic”
Hey Kira, can you react to The Contortionist - Clairvoyant album? i think youd like it
Oh Deftones do a great cover of Sinatra
Sleeping on blacktop ? Wake up
I would call this noise rock, post-hardcore, post-punk, not metal. page is a big Wire fan.
If you want to listen to some really messed up jazz, try out John Zorn's bands Naked City or Painkiller, they'll make you think, lol.
Please!!!
React to "Ratos de Porão - Brasil".
