Agreed, I was going to suggest the same thing. Some small braided rope is your friend when pulling cables and hoses, especially if you ever have worked on fiberglass boats and have to pull wires and cables to replace them.
I have an 06 XC70 with the EXACT same issue. Runs fine, accelerates fine, but has a cel with that code. Was never exactly sure what the issue was. I suspected fuel pump along with many other things. Now you just confirmed the very issue! Just wanted to say thankyou for the high quality and very helpful content you upload! Subbed!
@@oluwanifemiogundeko7132 Not that I'm aware of. The CEL comes on as soon as the pump runs at a higher duty cycle than normal. Meaning your pump is starting to get weak.
I had to do this same job on a Nissan Rogue a few weeks ago. Very similar setup. The service info for that thing said to tie a string to the wire and tube at the secondary sensor before yanking out the main fuel pump hanger so you could use the string to pull the tube and wire for the new one down and over to the second sensor. Glad I read the service info before I just started yanking stuff. No one in my area even stocks ni-copp brake line. It's special order ;-)
You must live in Florida. Everyone stocks ni cop in Pennsylvania. I've replaced brake lines on 6 year old vehicles. Ni cop will last for a long long time in the the rust belt.
Thank you for this video. I recently had the same P0089 code. With a 16 year old original pump and 125k miles, I finally decided to change the fuel pump. It was the last thing on my "to do" list for the S60 T5. What a difference! Very smooth with a faster acceleration and hopefully better MPG. Thank you again!
You had to use a smal rope on the Wire Bedford you pull them from one side to the other side, and replace the O-ring's, they are going to leak... in a while. Nice video, Nice Volvo!
As others have mentioned... When I saw you start to pull the old sending unit out, I thought, "Uh, he needs to have tied on some kind of string and pulled it through so he can *_then_* use the string to pull back the harness/hose of the replacement." Yep... Such is the way it goes. You'll know for the next time, for sure.
I owned an S60 T5. When the factory warranty was coming to an end, the service advisor told me, "Buy the extended warranty, it will pay for itself." It did.
Smart move replacing the filter Ivan. Why go through all that work and have a dirty fuel filter ruin all your hard work. The old one may have been good but it doesn’t take much dirt to ruin or affect a new pump or transfer pump. Makes ya feel good when all your efforts pay off in the end. Nice work Ivan
Great job on your diagnosis! This is actually not a common failure for Volvo. Usually around 200k miles is when fuel pumps fail on those cars. The pwm design helps with longevity.
Good job Ivan ! As you started pulling the old pump out, I was saying to myself, tie a string to the end so you can retie it to the new pump. Then pull back on the string and the new parts come back.
Almost every European car you work on, Ivan, you describe as being too 'fancy'. And yet, you almost always seem to find something to admire about them too, as in the dual pump layout on the Volvo being able to pump fuel from one tank to another as being 'awesome'. Rather like an aircraft in fact. Deffo a love-hate relationship going on there! ;-)

A big fat guess on the two pumps and all the complications. Low fuel tank and high speed cornering might cause fuel starvation. This system might be to mitigate that possibility.
About the bonus part: Yes there are two fuel level sensors, computer calculates how much there is fuel left from two sensors and turns the fuel gauge needle to the right position. I once ran out of fuel with my V70, when the fuel gauge was showing half tank. One of the sensors was stuck to full and I ran both tanks totally empty, because the gauge was showing 1/2 tank, but in reality both tank sides were empty. The needle was not stuck, it just moved a half speed down from full and I did not realize that. So even with a new car - reset you tripmeter when topping up the tank. Fuel level sender froze in freezing weather due a few drops of water in the gas i filled from an underground tank.
Some cars use 2 pumps because of the shape of the tank to make sure the fuel is taken from one side of the tank to the other and then pump to front of car. More parts more failures more landfill!
Lots of sedans have those "Saddle" fuel tanks. The fuel level sending unit is typical on one side and the fuel pump module is on the other. Easy to get to, no removing the tank. Just have to be careful and always have some of those "pigmatts" on hand to catch any spillage. I am amazed that these fuel pumps, which wear out way too soon, are still used by vehicle manufacturers. You'd think they would improve them to go a good 150,000 miles or more but they don't. I'm almost sure that just the fuel pump itself is sold separately which can save on cost quite a bunch depending on the labor charge to swap out the old one. Stay away from Airtex fuel pumps. Delphi is good.
Truly a superior effort Ivan. The Volvo. Not so much. I could understand the the other company, SAAB, with a complex fuel management system. SAAB makes jet fighters. Volvo has sunk to new lows. They used to be the "buy it and forget it" company.
Interesting that as worn out as that OE pump seemed to be, that it never set a lean code. I would've been curious to see where fuel trims were, just for giggles. Oh what fun replacing that looked to be !
I was going to suggest it but quite a few others already have, about fastening a string to the old transfer tube before pulling it out. It works great. I did that trick when I was replacing the wiring harness on my boat trailer and it works like a champ. Just curious Ivan, what is the ball park cost of that pump? Three hours is justifiable for this repair with diagnosis and replacement time.

S60, V70 etc have a "Saddle tank", because AWD models have a rear driveshaft running through the lower part of the tank. Without the transfer pump, you would only get a half tank gas out from the tank (V70). Simpler solution would have been putting a hose at the bottom of the tank from one side to other, BUT if that hose would be damaged in a accident, it would leak out the whole tank of gas and cause a serious fire hazard at the accident site. Like you burning in your car. When you use electric pumps for transfer and and delivery, you can stop the pumps when accident happens and all the hoses outside the plastic fuel tank are not pressurised and do not spew out gas if ripper or damaged. The plastic tank has been designed to sustain a lot of damage before puncturing.
You should of tied something to the old end , then when you pull it through , you then have something to pull the new on into place with. Solid diagnosis. Is it 4x4 saddle tank

If the information was more clear on this code , what you really needed to know was what duty cycle it should be at to what fuel pressure. With the info you have given us it turns an hours long diagnostic into just minutes. Thank you
So I just did this job on an xc90. Very similar setup, the range was not as bad as yours of high duty cycle. On this one the duty cycle was only at 43 percent at idle and still set the code. After a new pump it went down to 35 percent. So it only takes a slightly worn pump to give that code.
One thing to note on these models P80 cars, the ECM pins can get out of alignment and can caused weird problems, I had one that was calling for throttle body and alter on for the air meter. Realign the pins and it went away, too many pot hole hits.

Yes, sometimes mechanical fault can cause EFI fault codes, very large long term fuel trims, etc because a faulty fuel pressure regulator caused a 25% long term fuel trims,a P0171 & a P0174 lean code as the fuel pressure was at 51 PSI instead of 58 PSI where it's supposed to be in my car !
As a complete novice I'd like to ask why your 1st step wasn't changing the fuel filter? surely you would have shown the same readings had the fuel filter been dirty? Thx
Pretty sure that secondary pump is just a transfer pump. Since these are 4 wd, the tank has a channel through it to accommodate the rear drive axle. The pump will move the fuel from the opposite side of the tank to the pump side. So i don’t think it has anything to do with the pressure , unless you were about out of fuel.
As you pulled the cross-tank wire out without a return wire to pull it back already connected, I thought out loud "that's a mistake." And it was! It's really cool that volvo figured out a way to detect fuel pump imminent failure before leaving the owner stranded. Complexity but great benefit.
Hi from the UK. Can you please say what is the scan tool you use for scanning the Volvo you worked on. Does it need to be run in conjunction with a VIDA connector? I have had no success trying to install a Chinese clone VIDA on my laptop, perhaps I lack the tech ability, so I am looking for an "out of the box" solution. Thanks in advance for any help.
Be very careful if you ever do that in the future. One time I stupidly lifted a fuel pump out of the tank like that. I don’t think the car was running but the key was on. I was doing power n ground checks. Something found a ground when I lifted the pump up n kaboom!!! The fumes lit up inside the car! It was not any of the test leads either. I only had a test light back there. Just be careful doing that. I would recommend not ever lifting a pump out of the tank with the car running or key on. I no I never will again!!!! Nice work Ivan. That was a great find! Is that scanner the same as your smaller Launch?
May faulty fuel pump cause DTC codes "fuel pressure signal missing" and "fuel pressure signal too high"? That's what I get, I haven't checked with auxilary pressure gauge, but once the engine is running it reads correct pressure values(nominal pressure equals actual pressure). The car has to be started 7 or 8 times before the fuel pump starts at temperatures 25-45 C, if it's hotter or colder- no problem.
What was god awful was that??? That was overly complicated pump job!!! Damn ivan, i would run away lol!! You made it look easy lol. Great job! Awesome video!!
Once aspect to keep in mind when dealing with any pumps. Pressure does NOT equal Volume. In general when you have a two pump system like this you replace both pumps.
The between-tank pump wasn't throwing a code and clearly Volvo is monitoring all the pump efficiencies. If the other mechanism was hard to get to, I'd probably agree with you, but in this vehicle, it looked fairly simple so no expense needed at this time.
My coworkers had replaced one of these pumps and the car ran again, but the customer was not happy. The fuel trims seemed reasonable but the customer was describing a lean fuel condition under load. I put a mechanical fuel guage on it and the needle started dancing after running a few minutes. Another replacement pump was ordered an upon replacement for the second time I noticed the feed tube for the fuel bucket had gotten knocked off on the first installation. Which was the causd of the complaint.

Aftermarket wiring diagrams, like parts, vary widely in quality. That's why I prefer to use OE wiring diagrams over the aftermarket. OE diagrams aren't always perfect, but 99% of the time they're accurate. Would a current ramp test (with the scope) on the pump have revealed any valuable information on the failed pump in this case?
Nice job on that diagnosis. At least you didn't have to drop the tank to get it out. Overly complicated system. Now you know that if you power the pump directly from the battery a good pump will get you very high pressure and a soon to die one will not get to the 70psi the computer needs. Great Job.👍👍👍
If the fix was easy you wouldn't be doing it..I don't know how you figure out some of these problems in stuff you fix ..you are a ...masters.. tech......
Fuel pump has been done on my 04 V70 so has the pressure sensor, no fuel filter since the gas tank is the metal one so what could be causing my P0089 code?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Is that the pump electronic module? Aka PEM? Because from what I understand the fuel pressure regulator is built onto the fuel pump and that's been replaced less than a year ago. Only problems I'm noticing are lack of acceleration
Ford flex has saddle tanks . Our 09 runs out of fuel with just under 1/4 gauge reading. 85 DTE on display. 4 tanks of no n ethanol .made it better for a couple of months. Assume level sensor corrosion.
Prevents slushing of the fuel during fast cornering, increasing the stability of the car. Apparently this car also tries to balance the weight, so if there is only a driver, it pumps extra fuel to the right side of the car, to restore balance.
It's not really s "split" tank. It is a saddle tank with the two parts straddling the driveshaft. It provides a large tank capacity while controlling vehicle dynamics and balance. It's a great design but a PITA when the pump needs work (which isn't very often- 200kkm+ ).
Darn. Now you know why boat riggers know there chit. I did one like that very similar on a BMW after that I installed to remember to always tie a line to the pipe you're pulling out therefore you can pull the line back through without hassle. I believe that some type of a Venturi transfer system transfer fuel from left to right. And it would be a good thing for you to have check the pulse width modulation and pressure with a new one for your own records

Was this an AWD model, by any chance? That would explain the tank being split because the drive shaft is in between.
Wow Bill that must have been SCARY! Scanner software is the same as the little Diagun 👍
On the bright side at least I didn't have to drop the tank or deal with any rust 😅
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics oh very true!! You're lucky on that one.
Nice video Ivan! What's your thoughts on that scan tool? I use the same one.
So far I like it 👍
What is the name of the scanner you're using, and does it work on any cars including BMW?
My coworkers had replaced one of these pumps and the car ran again, but the customer was not happy. The fuel trims seemed reasonable but the customer was describing a lean fuel condition under load. I put a mechanical fuel guage on it and the needle started dancing after running a few minutes.
Another replacement pump was ordered an upon replacement for the second time I noticed the feed tube for the fuel bucket had gotten knocked off on the first installation. Which was the causd of the complaint.
I just love firing the Volvo parts cannon. Parts guy 35 years!
Ivan, I have the same scanner, but the memory of the tablet is already full and sometimes it doesn't want to update. It happens to you?
Not yet...
Hi Jose, after reading ur concern with the LUNCH scanner as i have the X431V+ and it is my go to scanner i had the same problem the memory was full and had problem to update so after some research and reading online i had to go and buy an external 120 GB card and installing it all my problem is gone and works perfectly and far way faster than before so to do that it is very easy just take the cover around the tablet and install the external 120 GB card and clean ur lunch tablet from every thing all the soft wear and then go to lunch web side and start down loading again for ur information i even down loaded the Chinese one too hope this information help you. cheeeeeeers
@@jgeorges3061, Ok Thanks.
The different readings between gauge pressure and fuel pressure PID might be due to intake manifold vacuum at idle, similar to some Fords?
Exactly right 😁
Aftermarket wiring diagrams, like parts, vary widely in quality. That's why I prefer to use OE wiring diagrams over the aftermarket. OE diagrams aren't always perfect, but 99% of the time they're accurate.
Would a current ramp test (with the scope) on the pump have revealed any valuable information on the failed pump in this case?
Don't think an amp trace would have shown anything interesting...
Good job Iven
Nice job on that diagnosis. At least you didn't have to drop the tank to get it out. Overly complicated system. Now you know that if you power the pump directly from the battery a good pump will get you very high pressure and a soon to die one will not get to the 70psi the computer needs. Great Job.👍👍👍
Pulling out that pump assembly was like birthing a baby! Holy Moly!
With an EXTRA LONG umbilical cord. :D
Don't say that to your wife!
If the fix was easy you wouldn't be doing it..I don't know how you figure out some of these problems in stuff you fix ..you are a ...masters.. tech......
Nice job, had a feeling you have to fish piping through, seems a little complicated for a fuel pump but it's a Volvo
And I had P0089 plus P0087 and after exchange of fuelpressure sensor the DTC left the building..
it is a good that volvo put a engin light on for a gas pump that is going to fail
Hi, I changed both Unite and the one on the left is leaking changed the O-ring and still leaking what did I do wrong?
Ivan, which euro make have you had the fewest repair issues? Also, which euro make would you choose to work on if you had to make a choice?
I like Volvos and earlier Saabs :)
Cool! We got volvos! Heading into weird Swedish territory now
Ah crap! My V50 t5 gets the same code. I was hoping it is the fuel pump module. I've already ordered it so if it's not that, then it's the fuel pump.
How did you get the wiring diagram for do it yourself ers
Where did you find the oem diagram. Please and thank you.
Your on your way to becoming a European vehicle technician! They certainly do things different than Domestic U.S. and Asian!
Fuel pump has been done on my 04 V70 so has the pressure sensor, no fuel filter since the gas tank is the metal one so what could be causing my P0089 code?
@@nwsights6301 fuel pump module
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Is that the pump electronic module? Aka PEM? Because from what I understand the fuel pressure regulator is built onto the fuel pump and that's been replaced less than a year ago. Only problems I'm noticing are lack of acceleration
Ford flex has saddle tanks . Our 09 runs out of fuel with just under 1/4 gauge reading. 85 DTE on display. 4 tanks of no n ethanol .made it better for a couple of months. Assume level sensor corrosion.
would love to know how much that pump was?
About 200$ for the bosch unit airtex was almost 500$
Why the split tank and a transfer pump?
Prevents slushing of the fuel during fast cornering, increasing the stability of the car. Apparently this car also tries to balance the weight, so if there is only a driver, it pumps extra fuel to the right side of the car, to restore balance.
It's not really s "split" tank. It is a saddle tank with the two parts straddling the driveshaft. It provides a large tank capacity while controlling vehicle dynamics and balance. It's a great design but a PITA when the pump needs work (which isn't very often- 200kkm+ ).
How much was the parts, very expensive being a Volvo?, David from the UK
Google 😁
Nice vid...complicated concept...
Nice job and video
Thank you for the kind words Donnie!
Info on the scan tool please!
Yep, definitely a walbro in there. Probably £150 fix.... how much was the OE assembly.
Under $200 lol
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics ha ok. 🙈
I did with the scanner 👍
Volvo's tech info problems? I'm happy I found the Chilton for my XXSSTT2020 flying saucer wich left me almost stranded betwen Mars and Saturn. Happy Halloween!
Should have answered my comment in last video and I would have told you to tie a return wire on the old pump so you had a way to pull in the new one
How did you access OEM diagram?
ALLDATA has both
Nice! Another video so soon?
You would benefit from spending a bit of time on the volvo forums.
the first pump is to transfer over the saddle in the tank.
"Volvo doesn't give good info" wrong, and that includes pretty much all manufacturers. The after sales companies like alldata and Michell ect... don't buy that info, because they are cheap asses. One of my issues with after market info suppliers. Great info ivan! As always.
Do any of u guys know what scan tool Ivan is using here?
launch diagun
Thank you DH.
Launch X431V Pro. Link in the description!
Thank u Ivan! I am thinking of getting either this scanner or the Zurich ZR-Pro. If you ever get your hands on one of those I would love to see you do a review. Enjoy your videos very much!
Good content , good job man
Rob mobile man
Hi! Here i'm again. Sorry but mi laptop signaled loudly that my beer level in blood was extremely low, and also time was due to scracht my a#$..keep trucking yo..
This guy sounds exactly like Chris fix !!
Double the pumps...double the failure!
If it was a true double pump system it would be HALF THE FAILURE.
an price
that would be the case on usa cars.
Saturn Vue Opel engine has a split tank.
Two sided tank why?
Probably the same as for AWD models
Tying a string to the umbilical would have been an option. Hindsight is 20/20
👍👍
I see petrol pumps wear out quickly but diesel pumps normally will last the life of the car. Petrol is not a kind substance for moving parts.
Wow that is so complicated fuel pump. My lexus ls430 fuel pump is one unit. You replace pump and the unit go in. Done in 20 minutes.
