    The Mavic Mini is such an impressive little piece of tech. I got nervous flying one for the first time because it was so lightweight and tiny, I didn't want anything to happen to the little guy! But apparently it can handle a lot!

    I won't say how far I had my mini go, but it was a lot further, one thing I will say Ken coming from P4 and Mavics to the Mini which as you know is 249g you have to be careful , the slightest bit of headwind on the return journey, it can really lag you down and finish off your battery. I've seen loads blaming the Mini for falling out of the sky, it's down to pilot error, not allowing enough time to get back through a headwind which a P4 or Mavic would generally tear through...

    I always select a manual channel with the Mini. Usually Ch.153 is clear. Remember that the European Minis also operate on 5.8GHz CE power as well as 2.4GHz, and not just on 2.4GHz FCC like they do in the US. That way, we get less interference from home wifi routers that predominantly pump out 2.4GHz signals.
    Took mine for a range test (I don't do them as a rule and always fly VLOS) out in the middle of nowhere and got out to 2.57 miles with those exact parabolic extenders on.

    • @El_Smeghead
      @El_Smeghead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Ishere Yes. Had ideal conditions. Low KP, zero wind, zero WiFi/radio interference, and direct radio LOS. The trick is to start low and gradually rise up as the signal starts to break up, keeping the “extenders” angled straight at the drone, and keeping the drone pointing away from you. When I returned I mistakenly yawwed a 180 to return and immediately lost connection so pointed it back away from me and flew backwards to maintain a connection. I have to admit to being quite shocked myself as I was only expecting it to get to 8-10,000ft, if that! Maybe DJI mistakenly sent me an FCC model (?) but it does say CE on the controller label.

      @jeffkodysz4309 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeKinney8675 Notice I said "responsibly". There's no possible way you had VLOS on a Mavic Mini at 2.3 miles unless you had a spotter or two along the way. We've got to be more responsible than this or the FAA is just going to keep slapping more regulations on us.

  • @MrPlaneTalk
    @MrPlaneTalk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Ken...I have the Mini and those boosters.
    You’re right; the Mini does great in WIDE OPEN areas, and will go well beyond VLOS. BUT (and this is a big BUTT) if you are around buildings (such as a downtown) the signal reliability drops WAY down and the MINI will drop in and out of connection...(VERY scary).
    I flew downtown, around buildings, and monitored the connection signal-strength icon on the controller and it was “red” a lot. I then used the antenna “boosters” on the same flight path, and I did have stronger signal with fewer “lost connections” so it seems to help.
    Caution: One risk is that the boosters FOCUS more signal directionally, so one has to be more diligent in POINTING the antennas AT THE DRONE. If the boosters are pointed straight ahead and the mini is above, beside or behind you... signal drops way off and often lost.

Go back in the opposite direction 3,700? and have a visual observer with a microphone at the location you are at in this video and you have the “ spotter “ follow the drone in this same flight path possibly that same 3700? feet if not more until your spotter can no longer see the drone from the end of that 3700? feet from his new location . On the return flight the spotter could also retrieve the drone to you after you land it ...

    Was really great to see Dana again! Even though that was a long flight I would have still liked to have seen the distance with the range extenders just to see if there was any difference at all. Hope you and Dana and your familys stay safe during all this crazyness. God bless, thanks for sharing !

    I’ve had negative results using similar parabolic reflectors with my Mavic Air. If I recall correctly it could only fly about 2/3 the distance with the reflectors in a suburban environment.

    Had my Spark out 4000 ft in the middle of nowhere. Then I blinked and couldn't see it, so I hit RTH. I knew where it was and could see there was nothing around it, but all I needed was for video to drop out or ATTI mode to engage. Yea, keep it where you can see it.

    How can you see so far. The mini is really small. Even at 50 meters (200ft) away, I lost sight of Mini and had to depend on visual on the screen....

    • @aizanx
      @aizanx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I managed to get the Mini up to 639 meters, without losing sight, but once I took my eyes off to see the controller (due to signal loss notice), i lost it visually. Really gotta look hard... forgot that in RTH it will fly higher, so i was looking at the same spot looking for a spec in a white cloud spot. CE version in a big city, lots of interference here.

Also I'm sold on the Mini when all this blows over before I buy anymore FPV stuff I'm getting back in the DJI game as well! Have big plans for the mix of footage I'll be able to achieve with both worlds! CHEERS!

    If you take binoculars with you and can see the drone through them, wouldn't that still be considered line of sight?

    • @KenHeron
      @KenHeron  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You cannot use binoculars to maintain line of sight. However, you can use them briefly for situational awareness. This according to the FAA.
