      Hi Ian, very helpful video mate..
      It's a shame, I truly believe dji made a mistake with this drone and has used undersized and powered motors, and I don't think it will turn out to be a big seller like the air and pro. Even though the spark is around only 60g heavier is handles wind so much better then the mavic mini due to the much more powerful motors, its a shame I think the mavic mini is z great drone but it being under powered is stopping me buying one, I'd rather keep my spark for sure..
      Have a good weekend Ian, and happy flying all 👍

    Very good info, my son thought that he lost his mini over a very large lake. He was out about 1.5 miles checking out a couple small islands and he was getting a couple strong wind advisers when out of no where he lost everything. We both sure he had lost it forever when after about ten minute that little drone found its way home. Very scary indeed.

    Excellent advices! Short and clear. I have the same app indicating the wind maximum speed at different altitudes. It indicates very clearly "You can fly" or "don't fly" in big. It's often a bit pessimistic, which is good and safer in fact. I had 2 forced landings in the recent past. The option "find my drone" on my DJI Mini SE worked very well.

    Excellent advice. My first drone years ago was a cheap Syma X5C. For those not familiar with that, it's a small light weight drone with a low quality camera, no GPS or any other type of position hold assistance and very little power. I quickly learned not to fly it with anything more than a barely detectable breeze and more importantly to pay attention to the conditions at higher altitude. Believe it or not that little drone still works and I fly it occasionally. The first thing I do is fly it as straight up as I can above tree level and see if it's getting blown around. With a transmitter range of about 100 yards at best and 5 to 6 minutes of flight time it doesn't take much wind at all to result in a crash. Fortunately for the drone it's so light it's never taken any damage aside from one broken propeller because it wouldn't be worth repairing. I also have a five year old Syma X8C which is bigger and more powerful but with similar flight time and range. It's pretty fun to switch back to one of those from time to time and be reminded of how much nicer it is to fly other drones with a little technology lol.

    I took my mini out today for the first time, was getting impatient of flying it indoors waiting for ideal conditions. UAV Forecast was suggesting 14kmph winds so I decided to just go for it. Headed out up to some moorland and had the drone up in the air for about 5 mins. Once I gained an altitude of about 20 meters I could see she was fighting to hold position. To make things worse, I hadn't checked my phone battery (I know) and the thing just died on me with the mini about 50 meters away and about 20 meters alt. To say I panicked is an understatement, RTH button was pressed which began to increase altitude (I had RTH alt. set to 50mtrs) so I took control, dropped it to about 3 meters and she limped back to me. Funny thing was, she didn't want to descend to the ground to land so I had to grab her out of the air from about 5 feet. This was a close call and I am worried now that I should only fly her in ideal conditions which is a shame as the forecast looks poor up here in yorkshire for the next few weeks at least. Thanks for the video, I will be paying much more attention in the future! You live and learn I guess.

    Had a Phantom 4 (which got stolen) so I recently bought a Mavic Mini. You are absolutely correct when you say you have to take the high wind speed warnings on the Mini seriously! Just about lost my brand new Mini up in northern Nevada a few weeks ago. Downdraft from the side of a nearby mountain started to carry it away. It didn't have enough power to fight it! I struggled for ten minutes to try to get it to come back. It eventually went into forced auto-land mode and I was VERY lucky to retrieve it after hiking around in mud and snow and sagebrush and cowshit for 20 minutes.
    One thing I would suggest: keep a sharp eye on your horizontal speed indicator! If your drone is supposed to be stationary, and your horizontal speed indicator shows that it's moving, especially AWAY from you, get it the hell down and out of the wind ASAP! I almost paid a high price to learn that.
    (A little funny...the Mini was recording video as it was executing the forced landing, with the camera pointing straight down...the video totally reminded me of some space probe touching down on Mars.)

      While tilted flying forward the rear propellors get wash from from the front propellors. Fly backwards and all four propellors will see cleaner air. Also don't fly outdoors using the guards as they add a lot of drag.
      I wonder if Mavic could be convinced to change the RTH algorithm to return home flying backwards if ground speed drops below a threshold.

    Airline pilot here based in Texas; I can vouch for how quickly the wind can change over a very small altitude change. On approaches to Houston I've often had the airport report very light or even calm winds on the ground yet during the approach I've had the wind readout on our instruments indicate sometimes 20 or 30 knots (23-34 mph) down to around 300 feet and 15 knots at 100 feet then dropping rapidly to near calm near the ground. So Ian's advice definitely holds true--if you're starting to get a wind warning, get it down low and bring it back before you get out too far.

    If you lose signal when the drone is going down. Just go in the direction the drone landing and try to reconect to the drone. This has helped me many times. Not to recomend but it works.

    I have had multiple instances where a fly away was possible, but getting it down low has seemed to be the best best, especillay if there are trees or a wind break you can get behind to help you get closer to home.

    I have had this happen in a Diamond da-20 light plane while in a training area and strong winds, we were at 6000ft descending quickly and at as fast an airspeed that was safe (Va) AND WE WERE STILL GOING BACKWARDS! We finally gained ground at circuit height and made it back with less than a quarter tank. Fun times in the maritimes!

    Great Video Ian, and really helpful tips for a novice drone flier

  • @booklailert
    @booklailert 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The mini’s tilt angle isn’t exactly limited my its size rather it’s limited my its motor strength. As the drone tilts forwards, more power is needed to keep it at the same altitude as the force from the motor is pushing at an angle instead of directly downwards so the vertical component of the force from the motor is decreased. So it has to compensate by running the motor higher, the larger drones don’t have any problems with this as their motor is plenty strong enough. However this is not the case with the Mini (as you can see by the warnings “Not enough force” or “Maximum Motor Speed Reached”. This explains why descending speeds it up because though the motor is running at the same max speed, it can tilt further into the wind(which increase the horizontal component of force and decrease the vertical component). Also what you can try to do when you run out of altitude is climb back up then descend back down again(though the drone might get blown back a little while climbing it will make it all back when coming down). However, this is only recommended when you still have some battery left.
