  • In this video we show the process involved in replacing the front wheel bearing hub assembly on a 2005 Chevy Tahoe 1500 4X4. This procedure is similar to many Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile vehicles with the 1500 chassis and modular hub bearing assemblies on the front end.
    This video is for informational and entertainment purposes only. Consult the manufacturers repair manual for proper repair procedures and torque. The Car doctor Channel is not responsible for injury, death or worse due to improper use of this information.

    For rusted on hubs, try backing out the mount bolts approximately 1/2” and alternatively hit them with a heavy hammer. As the hub works it’s way out, back the bolts out and repeat. Liberal use of your favorite penetrating oil will help.

    Did the exact same job here in Wisconsin. Both hubs, one solid week to free everything up. Heating, cooling, penetrating oil, hammering, air chisel, slide hammer , sledge hammer and finally bolts through the rotor to knuckle to remove the bearing hub. The aluminum knuckles corrode to the steel hubs and seems like they will never break free, but eventually they come apart. Going back together is cake. As you guessed I am a backyard mechanic but the road salt makes every job difficult. If you are an evil person God sends you to live in Wisconsin Hell.

    Chevys hub bearings sometimes get like that and never vibrate or make noise and when you get ready to remove the wheel you wonder how bad it needs to get. I used to wonder how customers never felt it until I raised my '06 Sliverado SS with 22" rims and the left wheel laid over. It never made a noise, no clunking, and no vibration...scary part was I had just run @35 miles at @85 mph (maybe more) and I was just doing a normal tire rotation...surprise! I've been using Moog for over 40 yrs and never had a comeback. Nice repair Tim!

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know you are probably right. I just tend to doubt it when the customer claims they never heard a noise since so many times I test drive a vehicle and turn around aborting the test drive because I feel unsafe. Only to be told they never noticed a problem and just want their oil changed. Haha.

    • @haywardsautomotive6156
      @haywardsautomotive6156 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now mind you I probably caught it right after it failed b/c I know it would have clunked and made noise just freaked me out a little that it was so smooth running that fast but it was straight highway and no hard turns...sometimes they do things you just can't believe or explain.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just test drove with a guy who has a newer Silverado and I think its just beginning to make a slight noise. Hes coming back tomorrow so I can get it on the lift. I cant wait to see what this one looks like. It only has 55K miles on it. Might be something else too I don't know.

    • @haywardsautomotive6156
      @haywardsautomotive6156 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Car Doctor Curious to see what you find. 99% of the time they make a noise or have some form of vibration but the one I had violated all laws of what we know...LOL When I lifted my truck and seen the wheel move slightly I said I'm working too many hours b/c I thought I saw the wheel move and then when I grabbed it I thought obviously you haven't been working enough b/c now you have to replace the hub & bearing on your own truck...luckily we both have a sense of humor!

    How were the brake pads, and caliper mounting bracket? Seems like 90% of the hubs I replace I always end up doing the brake pads, the affected rotor and a caliper mounting bracket. Takes out the inner pad, and the rotor digs into the bracket and destroys it. A good practice I have got into when doing the hubs, regarding the little clip that breaks that holds the abs wire to the control arm, I always reuse the old one, and keep the new clip, that way when I replace a control arm, and that clip breaks I have a new one to use, cause I hate zip tying the abs wire to the control arm. I have tried sourcing those clips, at the dealer and aftermarket, nobody has them, and they only come with new hubs w/ and abs sensor. If you buy a new abs sensor only you don't get the clips.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case the pads and caliper mount was ok. I should keep those used clips too. Good idea.

    hey Tim, how is there no rust on 10+ year old vehicles rust up there in Alaska? Aren't you near the ocean with that salt water air and salt on the roads? Over here in Massachusetts, all we see is rust.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are near the ocean but as long as vehicles stay out of the salt water it seems like they do ok. I own several trucks that get driven in the salt water and they about rust in half after just a few years. But no road salt is the key reason we don't have excessive rust here I believe. Ya its a bitch without impact. In mpls mn Salt rust is destroying cars.
    Also ive never torked anything because...never mind.
    I even salvage old struts by refilling them with lube oil. Take wheel off and drill into strut one inch from top. but then I let the car down and brace under the axel or disk to allow the strut to be at normal pressure. fill with a heavy lube. Hose clamp the hole with any piece of rubber on it.

    wow, 140 f-lbs sounds excessive for aluminum wheels.

      Seems like a lot too but that's the spec. I guess they don't want the wheel falling off...ever!
