    This video was right on spot, everything I ran into was exactly like he said right down to the hub being frozen in. I tried the impact chisel but no go, soaked it good with liquid wrench and used a flat chisel and a 5 lb. hammer before it finally moved. Like he said, if you can buy the shield, do it! It took way too long to make it usable. It took me 2.5 hrs and I had all the tools. Thanks guys.

    Great video from a real mechanic on a truck that’s seen real conditions and wear. The Stoicism of New Englanders is the inspiration getting me through my same job. I have an insight: the dust shield is the entire problem. It’s like welding filler rod in there???

    Brings back painful memories of beating the hubs off my 2002. They failed within a year of each other. The 2nd one failed while I was driving with no warning signs. Felt like the wheel was going to fall off but I made it home.

    If no one has, it might be a good thing to mention using a six point wrench on the three bolts holding the bearing to the spindle as they can strip, like mine were, especially in New England or any other region that has lots of snow and subsequent salt.

    Knock out to 2 opposite side lug studs..
    Run bolts through toward spindle.
    Put nuts on the bolts.
    Tighten against flat spots of the spindle.
    It will drive the hub off even and easy.

    Great video. Whats the easiest way to diagnose which wheel is bad if you're not sure?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair
      @HomeOwnerRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can jack the truck up and grab the top of the tire and bottom of the tire to see if there is play in the wheel bearing. I recommend doing them in pairs because if on side is bad then the other side usually goes bad not long after. Hope this helps you out.

  • @josesantana561

    Do you think it’s a good idea using the power steering to press out the hub by pinning a piece of wood (or similar) between a loosened nut from the wheel hub and the frame of the vehicle?

      If your referring to the opening in the knuckle where the hub goes, you can use a little grease on it if you do not have never seize.

    My son is doing this right now. The bearing split in half from beating on it with a sledge hammer, the back of the bearing assembly is still in there. How many hours did it take from start to finish? I saw 2 hours. He has the cv joint removed, can he hit it from the back to knock it out?

    • @HomeOwnerRepair

      Hubs are a common wear item that is common to have to replace, especially if the truck has over 100,000 miles on it. If they are making noise you may want to replace them. Hope this helps you out.

      Yeah, jack it up. Put hands at 12 and 6 and shake tire, then 3 and 9 and shake again. Hopefully no wobbling. Go on you tube because I dont remember what the significance is and check around. I think 3 and 9 are ball joints. Looks like 12 and 6 is wheel bearings. Hopefully you dont have both! Good luck!
